Question? There are two holes on the arms. I noticed you attached to the bottom hole versus the one above? Does it make a difference? I put mine on the first hole because it was attached that way when I replaced the box but my cables aren’t engaging smoothly?
On my control assembly, the bottom of the arm has a peg that is used to attach. It seems to be lined up better than if they were attached higher up. Maybe swap yours and see if it helps?
@ I did and it was better! Another question? Did your throttle arm have cotter pins attaching it? I took the old cables off and pulled two cotter pins off the original throttle arm, one on top and one on the bottom. Now I’m trying to put the new one back in and I see the hole for the one on top but I don’t see the hole for one on the bottom. It’s possible I didn’t need to take the one off the bottom, but it didn’t seem to want to release until I did that.
@@Debidawg No this control box didn't have cotter pins - the cable ends attached to the arm with a bracket and a screw - you can see it at @10:50 of the video
FYI, I just installed the same throttle control and the trim stopped working for me too a day or 2 later. Thanks for sharing that part. Replacement relays did the job. Thank you! Anymore problems with the relays since then? I'll probably keep a couple extra on the boat just in case
Brilliant video I've got a brand new side mount unit but for some reason when I push forward after its selected gear the throttle arm dosnt move at all so not sure if something has come lose on mine
Is the cable itself not moving or the mechanism inside the control box? You should be able to take the side off like in the video and see which part isn't moving like it should.
Should the fire extinguisher be mounted at a different angle to prevent the powder from packing into a dense cake from all the bouncing up and down on waves, etc?
@@Everydayfishing True, but if it's compacted horizontally you have a better chance of shaking it all loose. It's probably a good idea to shake them once in awhile anyway. I would check with the Coast Guard or the Coast Guard Auxiliary to see what they recommend.
You done an excellent job on the boat. How does the controls work after a year are you satisfied with them? I'm getting ready to buy a set for my Mercury on my pontoon rebuild and wanted to make sure they are worth buying.
This Mercury outboard only had the one wire harness so there was nothing else to connect. The ignition was included in the wire harness you saw me connect

I found this on Amazon - just be sure to search for one that matches the brand of your outboard. Usually the product descriptions are pretty accurate. Don’t worry too much and give it a shot! Trust me it’s daunting at first but it gets easier once you dive in. I’ve been happy with this one - a.co/d/cgKeRa0
Great video. Any advice on how to keep a motor centered that won't be using a steering cable? Mounted it to my sailboat which has it's own steering wheel. Thanks
Each manufacturer has a specific type of connector so just be sure you buy controls made to be compatible with your outboard manufacturer and you should be good
Do I need a specific throttle cable for 1990 25 hp mercury? The shifter cable is doing exactly what it needs to do, but my throttle cable will only pull, when I need it to push. Do I need to do something to the throttle cable so that it will push?
They are identical! Doesn't matter which cable goes to where, as long as you connect the shifter control to the shifter, and throttle control to the throttle.
when you go and order the steering cable from the website it has various lengths, 13ft, 14ft, 15ft etc. is that the cable length measured from the motor, around the sides of the boat and in towards the console? what happens if it is too long
Yes you should take a string or flexible tape and measure the path your steering cable will take, then round up to the nearest measurement. They are pretty rigid, so too much extra would be tough to manage.
No it doesn’t make an alarm or buzzing sound when you turn the key. I’m honestly not sure if it’s supposed to but I’m assuming this model just doesn’t have that feature
Not sure if you know but does your boat have a rotary steering system or hydraulic. I have the old pulley cable type on my old Mirrocraft and i’m thinking next year when i get a 4storke of changing it
Yeah this boat is just mechanical steering - no hydraulics. It works fine for me, it’s not hard to turn or anything. But you might want hydraulic if you get a motor bigger than 40hp
Hi there! Did you need to replace anything on the outboard so that the throttle and shift cables would operate properly with the remote rather than the tiller control?
Unfortunately I don't have any experience with converting from tiller to remote controls. I'd recommend tracing the tiller throttle and shifter and seeing if those points match those in my video - go from there.
You skipped a part I was really trying to hope to see. How did you connect your throttle power cables to your battery but also have all the fuze box and what not off it. The battery must be loaded
So there’s only 2 wires connected on each of the battery terminals. One set goes to the outboard, the other goes to the fuse panel. All electrics are then powered by the fuse panel. The only wire for the throttle controls is that thick one that plugs into the wire harness from the outboard. No power directly needed from battery to controls.
