      I disagree.
      (a) It's unlawful to deny litigants an opportunity to be present in proceedings unless their behaviou is extreme. Judges should first and foremost follow the law
      (b) the judge was the most out of control person in the courtroom, raising his voice, repeatedly demeaning the litigant with sarcasm. Nobody, not even a judge, should get to be that unprofessional in their workplace. If anyone needed a timeout it was the judge.

He owes the judge a HUGE thank you. Loved how the judge kicked him out of his courtroom. Welcome to adulthood where we pay rent and mortgages every month. These aren’t optional. You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. It’s not that he couldn’t pay the rent, he was choosing not to pay it and using the money on other things.

Yea no.. if the place you aren't renting isn't up to code, and the company or landlord refuses to fix it, you can definitely put your rent money into an escrow account until the problem is fixed. It's actually done quite often. This guy messed up though cause he was still spending the money

I don't know if I actually disagree with him that much. It's one thing if the problems developed during his lease, but so far the way he describes it, these were existing issues which the landlord didn't take the proper precaution to discover and/or rectify before placing it back on the market. It's easy to say if you don't have the rent money to not live there, but it's just as easy to say if you don't have a unit that holds up to municipal code to not offer it on the market.

So I'm never sure where people get the impression that judges just don't GAF and that there aren't other judges that do the same thing. @@jessimckenna2904 That's just sad. And then they got the shaft during covid on top of it all, what with the ban on evictions and such. As if landlords don't have bills of their own to pay or something!

@@wallyman292 we had a case with a squatter who moved into an empty house that was set to be repaired before applying for a certificate to be used as a rental, but the owners were cash strapped from COVID. This lady moved in, claimed she got scammed by someone with a fake lease (which happens quite a bit in Detroit- we have at least three cases like that right now), and promptly filed complaints with the city inspector, because she knew exactly what she was doing. She has a documented history of doing the same thing in Ohio. The eviction was started as soon as they lifted the stay, and the judge bought into everything. The owners were given ten days to come up with money to do $30k+ in immediate repairs (furnace, water heater, electrical), only to have that lady turn around and pull the new furnace and water heater out, presumably sell them, and had some broken down ones put on their place to tell the judge the repairs were never done. The case only settled about two months ago, and ended with the client having to pay the woman $4500 to move. They had to remortgage their own house to do over $50k in court ordered repairs, and their legal fees over the course of it were nearly $30k. They ended up selling the house for about $10k.
The lady lived there rent free for over two years, destroyed what she could that wasn't already in need of repair, and got paid to leave.
36th DC judges regularly ignore the statutes. A 10-day move out date on a judgment before a Writ can be issued? Nope, minimum 30 in their courtrooms. Defendants don't show up? Default judgment? Nope. They just adjourn the hearings.
When there are less landlords in Detroit, and rents triple, it will be because 36th DC judges drove out the landlords.

@@wallyman292I can't begin to _imagine_ the amount of rent that's owed from COVID rental lockdowns! I personally know people who owned homes & rented them out for their monthly income to live & COVID ruined them. They lost the properties & their own homes because they weren't getting paid. It was tragic. Homes that had been in their families for _generations!_ just lost because they refinanced it way before 2020 & that started a monthly payment to pay it back & once 2020 hit, the tenants decided they weren't paying them anymore so they couldn't afford to pay that mortgage payment on top of their personal bills & lost the houses..

As a former license 20-year realtor in the state of Georgia that specialized in saving property owners in distress from foreclosure, as well as saving tenants from illegal evictions I'm appalled at this couple.they are the renters from hell who sound like traveling gypsies. Where in the world can you live in a place of residence and not pay your rent? I'm just like judge take your tail, pack up your stuff and get out of Dodge. These moocher think that they can live somewhere for free and that's the bottom line. Since they're not paying rent they should have been able to have afforded an attorney to represent them. Obviously, they know that it would have been a waste of time and money because they would have lost. The best thing they could do in my opinion is go buy a tent and living the wilderness somewhere off the grid and see how that works out. Ugh! I'm just at the beginning of this scenario and irritated already but I'll keep watching and hoping that in the end the judge will give them a notice of eviction and to vacate the property. What nerves 😡😡😡
