SPOILER WARNING!!! I am watching all Star Wars in Chronological order; I have seen the Original Trilogy but nothing else beyond the Kenobi so please be careful of spoilers in the comments.
By the time of the Battle of Endor, the B-Wings are complete in their own squadron present during the space battle, along with silver and grey paint jobs.
It’s no coincidence that the B-wing's engineer is Mon Calamari. Firstly, it's worth noting that this species specializes in shipbuilding. Their ships aren’t made with Mandalorian precision and perfectionism, which is even evident here, but that’s part of their strategy. They don’t need to be flawless if there are many of them. Case in point: during the Battle of Endor, nearly the entire Rebel fleet consisted of Mon Calamari ships. The second reason is the fact that Mon Cala was the first to openly rebel against the Empire. In short, the entire rebellion on this planet was the result of intrigue by a Padawan who survived Order 66. He had a vision, which he shared with the king (the same one from The Clone Wars), that Mon Cala’s rebellion would lead to the fall of the Empire. The king believed this, and it led to rebellion. The Empire's response was swift-Vader and the Inquisitors arrived. By the time the king realized he’d been manipulated, it was too late. The Padawan’s entire plan was that this planet was meant to lose but also to inspire and serve as a model for others in the emerging Rebel Alliance. (So it's a natural ally) As for Ezra in Episode 2, he was really only there to ask questions about Sabine-to plant seeds and emphasize their importance. Once he fulfilled his role, he was immediately out of the episode. :) Regarding Sabine, they’ve shown the bare minimum, gradually revealing hints and raising new questions. One key question relates to her age and bounty hunting. In Season 1, Sabine is 16. Here we’re talking about a close relationship with another bounty hunter and knowing each other’s strategies. How old was she when she started? 14? 15? Another question quickly follows: why? The obvious answer is survival, but come on, she’s a Mandalorian. That doesn’t mean she’s destined to be a bounty hunter just because she knows weapons well. And let’s be honest, does Sabine strike you as the Boba Fett type? The answer is clear-Sabine is a creative mind and an artist, not a ruthless killer. The fact that she give up after the betrayal and found her place aboard the Ghost sums it up. So again, why did she choose to become a bounty hunter in the first place? Another essential question: why did she decide to flee from the Imperial Academy? And here’s an interesting tidbit-one of the directors said Sabine was deliberately written to be the least likable at the start. Even Filoni told everyone that Sabine would be as disliked as Ahsoka.
I find it so interesting that an aquatic species is manufacturing ships, it's truly the greatest contrast for an underwater species to want to be in the skies. Ah I remember this! Still awesome that the same prince/king would go on to spark the rebellion! Honestly loved Ezra's role here 😂 It's perfect as it gets questions out there for Sabine while also keeping the attention and focus completely on her, plus Ezra doesn't know anything about what happened so it's strictly between Sabine and the audience. Love how they're slowly revealing bits of information on Sabine, feels like her story's going to be huge in the end with how open they've been with all the other characters, the only reason to keep her so secretive is that they're planning something big! Was thinking the same thing about how young she must have been when bounty hunting, but I guess it's not too bad since Boba was a kid when he started and there are child senators after all, but it's clear that Sabine's childhood is certainly rough! it's incredible how this episode opens up so many questions about Sabine and gets the audience so intrigued about her past, I can't stop thinking about all the things she might have gone through to get to her current place and I cannot wait till I get all the answers!! This really surprises me, I didn't get a feeling of dislike of Sabine at all from the start of the show and it was definitely nothing like Ashoka who came off as rather bratty and disrespectful. From the get-go, Sabine's been far more mature and a team player, the only thing she's lacking is focus in the story, but this does make me very hopeful for her story as if she's meant to be like Ahsoka's development-wise, there must be a huge shift coming up soon!
Hera's piloting of the Blade Wing fighter will go down as her most iconic moment when I think back to her. The spinning notion of the fighter isn't Jedi, it's Mandalorian. Mandalorian fighters have their wings rotating around the cockpit. Love the new icon too.
Her piloting this thing was so insane and I love how the scene just makes it feel so powerful with her manoeuvring, truly one of the best pilots in all the galaxy! I thought there was a spinning Jedi ship from Clone Wars, might have been the mandalorians then but it's still cool that more ships are showing up with this mechanic. Glad you like it 😁
The B-Wing was first introduced way back an episode six against the second death star. The B stands for blade, because when the wings open up it looks like a dagger. This ship in this episode is a prototype. The composite laser, or as players of Star Wars squadrons like to call it, “the meme beam” Was too taxing on the fighter’s power systems and thus not used for the mass production version. The other big change from the prototype to the production model what is the removal of the gunner’s position. The B-Wing wing as seen in the battle against the second death star was only a single seat fighter. The weapons pod included a heavy cannon, proton torpedo launcher, and an ion cannon. To complement the rapid fire lasers mounted on the wings. The billing also had a doctor payload launchers minute it could be outfitted with just about any ordinance you can possibly imagine and it was barely affect the ships flight characteristics. And depending on what calendar you’re into or which video game you’re playing the B-Wing is either heaviest of heavy fighters or it’s a glass cannon. Offering a gigantic punch with a little survivability. Perhaps the fighter’s most distinct feature is the gyroscopic control system. You see, the ship’s fuselage rotates around the cockpit, completely changing the vector of attack. And during the movie a single squadron comprised entirely of B-Wings managed to completely eradicate an Imperial class star destroyer. You can actually see it blow up in one of the background shots of admiral Akbar. Speaking of, he’s the same species as Quarry whom is named after Ralph McQuarrie one of the men most recognized for the concept, art in oil paintings that made Star Wars possible in the first place.
Love that there's such a big history for the ship and that this episode basically serves as its origin, a shame they had to remove the big laser but at least it sounds like they still made it deadly.
Kanan's speech about finding a solution that nobody expects ties back to the beginning of the season, where he said the important matter of a fight is how one choses to fight.
Very happy with the consitency of Kanan's story, he's really trying to get this lesson into Ezra's head but it's clear that speeches aren't going to cut it.
2:35 this scene always gives me chills, that lineup of 3 Arquitens-Class light cruisers shivering the hell out of me. Also the ship called the "Blade Wing" is later called "B-Wing", im pretty sure it shows up in the movies (ROTJ etc).
The scenes with a ship blockade are always done flawlessly, it's so effective in making these things feel like an obstacle in the vastness of space. Also love that these ships are used in ROTJ, makes this episode have even more meaning with it being an origin story and a world-building episode for the Rebellion.
I love this Episode for starting a trend that makes every upcoming space battle more impactful: (technically the Tie in Season 1 was the start of the trend, but this one is for the larger Rebellion): In most space battles you have seen so far, the different fractions just have their ships and most of the time in such a high Quantity that loosing even a capital ship isn't that bad, since tere are more to replace them. For the Rebels, we know that the resources are limited, but alongside developing the characters, we now also get to see where most ships in the fleet come from, which gives us a deeper connection to the ships themselves, which therefore causes the stakes to be higher. This makes just getting another wide shot showing the current state of the fleet feel very impactful. I would even go as far as to say that the Rebel fleet is its own developing character in this show.
Absolutely agree, with an upcoming episode I love how it focuses on the growth of the Rebellion and the show just does such a good job at making it feel like its own character. This episode now is definitely both for Hera and the Rebellion as it builds up both of them and especially gives a deep insight into the Rebellion's resources and power level.
The Rebellion has a lot of ex-Imperials in it. A lot of them realized what the Empire was all about and couldn't do the evil things that they were doing. If you recall in Star Wars Episode 4, Luke told his uncle that he wanted to put his application to the academy, that's usually step one of trying to join the Rebellion. Sabine just gets more awesome as the show goes forward.
Hadn't realised that they were mostly ex-Empire, thought it would have been more difficult to leave but I love that already so many woke up to the reality of the evil and chose to fight it. Can't wait to see how Sabine will get even more awesome, it feels like this was all just crumbs compared to how much there's left to go into.
Hi Ben! Since you've already seen the OT, I'll point out that the B-wing was actually there in the attack on the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. The design isn't "new", but it's nice to see how it originated.
This makes this episode even better knowing it's also an origin for a ship from RofJ, it's really nice world-building that they went into this detail and we see that Hera had this ripple effect which allowed for this ship to be apart of the Second Death Star battle.
Getting into Hera and Sabine's backstories was really fun to get. They delve into their backstories even further during this and the next season and there's one Hera episode in particular that I'm looking forward to getting to again!
So happy with what these episodes did for these two, it was so good at scratching the surface of the stories and I'm so excited to see where they go from here!
10:38 that HAS to be my favorite of all your expressions while reacting 🤣 Edit 1: They were lucky the blockade was comprised only of Arquitens-class Light Cruisers and Gozanti-Class Cruisers, because anything bigger wouldn't have gone down with just the B-wing and their tiny fleet. Edit 2: I like the name they gave to Ketsu's ship, "Shadow Caster" I am pretry sure it is a nod to a piece of equipment from the game Knights if the Old Republic II, the "Exchange Shadow Caster" it was a stealth device used by the Exchange (a VERY old criminal organization from the times of the Old Republic).
😂😂 one of the best parts of the episode too! Cool to know that these things probably wouldn't be as effective against anything larger as it felt like these things could end the Empire. The name 'Shadow Caster' is so cool! Love that it's a node to the Old Republic Game and plus it's a name that's just too good to not be reused.
Their banter as they were crashing onto the planet was funny. 😆 Hera talking about her love for flying in this looked a lot like how she was talking about it in The Bad Batch. The rotating wings I thought was more Mandalorian-like, but I forgot the Jedi starships were like that. Man the B-wing ship really felt like it was a death star-type weapon when that was pointed it out, the converging lasers. They were in the OT too, but when they were in production, obvious the sheer firepower of one would be costly, let alone many more, so they took that out, but they were still strong. Chopper is nuts, snapping his droid arm to toss the parts to that weapon away and then laughing maniacally at that bounty hunter. 😂😂
The banter in this show is done phenomenally well, it captures the family vibes so perfectly! Loved this too, it's incredible how well they captured this love for flying here and then were able to replicate it for her in Bad Batch at a younger age. I just remember seeing a ship in Clone Wars that I think the Jedi used but I'm probably wrong 😂 Just remember that ship having a huge rotating thing. It's so cool that even though this weapon got cut, the ships were still used against the Empire, making this episode not only Hera's but also the B-wing's origin. Chopper finds joy in the most destructive things 😂😂 the amount of personality captured in this droid through his movements alone is absolutely insane!
@benspiller oh it's the Jedi starships I'm pretty sure, but when I saw someone else mention "mandalorian" I figured they must've had something like that too. I'll have to look it up.
About the B-Wing: The B-Wing actually first appeared in Return on the Jedi in the Background at the Battle of Endor. Most love for this fighter comes from the games, where the shown abilities were established. This Episode shows where the Rebels got this beast from and it makes sense to be manifactured by a Moncalamari, since those were excellent Engineers who built most Capital Rebel ships that are seen in the later Years of the Galactic Civil War, while in this show, most Capital ships we have seen so far are Correlian CR 90 Corvettes (with the 11 big engines in the Back). Those CR 90s are mostly used by the Alderaanian Navy, but somehow they have found their way into Rebel hands... I wonder why...
Loving how much history this ship has and how it was given an entire episode to establish its origin and importance for the Rebellion, almost feels like Hera shares the episode with this Ship now with how much is going on with it.
Well, your reaction was an absolute joy! I knew that when you reached a Sabine focused installment, it would be a great time. They were both terrific character-based episodes, which is something this series does incredibly well. You get a wonderful balance of Star Wars action with unfolding layers of characterization. This show just gets better and better.
I could not be happier with Sabine's episode!! 😁😁 After waiting so long it did not disappoint and as you said it does an amazing job at both telling a great Star Wars story with three parties fighting between a bounty and the characterization of Sabine herself, who has become such an interesting character with more layers added to her past but I love how we got more details on her while she stays secretive to the rest of the crew as no one else was there.
I have to admit that the first attempt to break the blockade was organized terribly. There is no sufficient firepower (just equip all A-wings with torpedoes and there's a chance), no specific breakout point, no proper cover for transport. No, seriously, how are you going to defend it? Fighters! How would I do it? Here is the first corvette. Behind him comes another corvette (with supplies). There are 4 A-wings nearby. This group attacks one of the cruisers in the center of the formation. When Kallus starts firing back The Ghost and the rest of the A-wings (equipped with torpedoes) should emerge from hyperspace on the flank of the Imperial formation and begin their attack. While Kallus chooses which of the two groups to focus fire on, the first corvette (with a minimum of crew or even with one man at the guns) accelerates and rams his flagship, punching a hole.
In Legends the B-Wing was designed by a race of insects and debuted much closer to its original appearance in ROTJ, but I'm not mad at this version being a crazy prototype much earlier.
In "Wings of the Master" in the scene where Hera explains to Quarrie her love for flying, you can hear Hera's theme playing in the background. In the score for Bad Batch S01E11 "Devil's Deal", the Kiners used Hera's theme again while young Hera is lying on the ground at the refinery watching her hand move across the sky. I think I remember you remarking that it sounded like Leia's theme, and it does, but it is different. "Wings of the Master" is another of those episodes with a particularly fine score.
It's so wonderful how expertly the score is utilized in these shows, it captures the feelings for the characters so perfectly so they can retrigger those thoughts and emotions whenever they need to for the character.
Thank yo for your reaction and analysis, the way they slowly fill in the back stories for each of the ghost crew is always well done. there is still much to learn. you will soon see :)
I'm so happy with how they introduced their back story here, it's quite minimal but it's enough to tie me over while also building these character's past.
I don't know how Sabine doesn't die from the door being blown open in SPACE, the vacuum of space would overpower her instantly, and her helmet would get sucked off, and her helmet isn't even creating an enclosed air pocket for her to breathe, you can SEE under it and her face....
🫡 To be honest Hera may not be my favourite character but she is somebody I would trust especially to doing what’s right. The main reason she is in my favourite is because of rules because sometimes you have to bend or break them in order to do what’s right. We’re getting more and more in regards to Sabine impressive most impressive
Hera's such a warm and loving character so it makes sense that she's the type to not do what is necessary making her rather rigid which could be a flaw in war so I can totally see this. Can't wait to get even more on Sabine, this felt like it was only crumbs for her story so I know it must be building up to something huge!!
As dumb as the Blade Wing looks, one-shotting a Light Cruiser is WILD. I couldn't believe what I witnessed when I saw it on TV. Also Hera very much deserved her promotion to Phoenix Leader. And her talents and development only improve throughout the series from here. Glad Sabine gets another episode too. It would've been interesting to see her days as a Bounty Hunter. Probably one of the main reasons for her tough exterior. And she gets more, better episodes in the future 😊.
I love the power this ship possesses, it's such an upgrade for the Rebellion that actually makes Kallus seem a bit nervous, Hera so deserved this role and I'm so happy we got to see her earn it too, no one else could have done what she did here and it seems so fun to imagine her getting even better than she already is 😂 I couldn't be happier that Sabine finally got an episode!! I've been waiting so long for her to get some focus and it's just awesome to get details on her past, being a former bounty hunter is the perfect fit for her and I just know this is the start of her getting even more awesome episodes!
Sabine has the most impactful character arc of any of the characters, but you unfortunately have to wait awhile to really get into it as it doesn't properly start until season 3.
I can't wait to get to this! I keep hearing how amazing her story is and it feels like I'm being drip-fed information, the way it's building up really makes it feel like it's going to be huge in the end!
Dude, the reason why you can’t see their faces is the same reason why you can’t see the faces of the imperial officers it’s too goddamn expensive to rig all those different faces for these kinds of characters. In TCW it was easy we all have the same face but in this area you’re talking about animating over a dozen different character models rigging them and doing all the information on less than a quarter of the budget of TCW and you don’t have George Lucas money to just pay for any overages like he did back in TCW Disney just did not give the show the budget it required.
@@benspiller Well they did that for Bad Batch. A lot of face models for passers by and such. But in Rebels, neither imperial or rebel were animated with eyes. Just the ones with names.
i have no idea why i have to ask this but... are you getting younger? in the first 20 seconds you switch from about 25-27 to 17 or something like that edit: omg its the headphones... wow 0_o
Sabine is a Mandalorian. What do you remember from Clone Wars about Mandalore. I’m not spoiling but you should have some knowledge from the Clone Wars.

About the B-Wing:
The B-Wing actually first appeared in Return on the Jedi in the Background at the Battle of Endor.
Thanks Ben, enjoyed your reaction/discussion.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
B-wing was in return of the jedi in backgraund bud in difrent paint and moro of dem
This makes this episode much cooler, having a background ship from the movies get it's origins explained in such a cool way!
In Legends the B-Wing was designed by a race of insects and debuted much closer to its original appearance in ROTJ, but I'm not mad at this version being a crazy prototype much earlier.
Honestly, I love that so much thought was put into its creation that two whole species were considered for the inventor!
@@benspiller oh don't worry about that, this is only midway through season 2, there will be plenty of opportunities for storytelling XD Enjoy the ride
I love the power this ship possesses, it's such an upgrade for the Rebellion that actually makes Kallus seem a bit nervous, Hera so deserved this role and I'm so happy we got to see her earn it too, no one else could have done what she did here and it seems so fun to imagine her getting even better than she already is 😂
I couldn't be happier that Sabine finally got an episode!! I've been waiting so long for her to get some focus and it's just awesome to get details on her past, being a former bounty hunter is the perfect fit for her and I just know this is the start of her getting even more awesome episodes!
Yeah, don't expect to see that wacky ship again, if I recall it's just a once off lol.
Shame as this shing could really do some damage
@@benspiller Mhm
I know, it's also too expensive to design a whole character if they're only going to be ended after one scene.
@@benspiller Well they did that for Bad Batch. A lot of face models for passers by and such. But in Rebels, neither imperial or rebel were animated with eyes. Just the ones with names.
i have no idea why i have to ask this but... are you getting younger? in the first 20 seconds you switch from about 25-27 to 17 or something like that
edit: omg its the headphones... wow 0_o
Had no idea the headphones had this kind of effect! 😂😂
Sabine is a Mandalorian. What do you remember from Clone Wars about Mandalore. I’m not spoiling but you should have some knowledge from the Clone Wars.
Having recorded more episodes, I definitely forgot a few things and it hit me like a brick when it all came back 😂
Why did you change your profile picture ? I'm not against it just curious
Wasn't happy with the old one as it was based on an early name I had for the channel until I decided to just use my name 😂
@@benspiller well the is fine It will take me a while to get used to it but the profile picture is beautifully done
