i have never once seen a fandom all unanimously agree on one single thing and just deciding to run with it and insist upon it to the point where it just became canon lol
Right! I'm a part of plenty of other fandoms where canon is hotly debated so it's refreshing to see something used in loosely official material being embraced by the fans to the point that it's become the standard. I love that Ninten was drawn a few times in Pollyanna with the bandana
@@dingola_ in undertale there are a lot of popular headcanons which people often forget are headcanons like sans remembering resets and stuff, but never once did it get to the point where they were officially acknowledge, and in the cases you could argue they were you could also argue they were things that were already implied. here though ninten never had a bandana it wasn't implied it was just one random feature from a Japanese commercial
@@guyrocketram9698 how this ninten design was acknolage? It literaly comes from original material, even not being made to be 100% faithfull to the arteorks or game sprites, but is an oficial incarnation of the character nonetheless. People just mixed both to come up with a headcanon of a more distinct aperence, as the video said.
At least this one has some merit behind it, considering he wears a neckerchief in the commercial. They kinda make both designs canon, even having pictures on official sites of a kid wearing the entire commercial attire.
Personally, i like that Ninten's design is so similar do Ness's, because it makes so that fans can make their own versions of the design, i saw a sprite sheet made by a guy, his name was something like Starnox, he made ninten in the snes style, and made his own redesign of the character! I thought it looked very cool, it was very different than anything i had seen before, the eye colors, clothes and even the hair was different! And there are many other interesting redesigns around.
That's a great point, the character's in a pretty unique position with little official material differentiating him from his more popular counterpart! It's up to the fans, and I've seen lots of other neat redesigns like you mentioned besides just the bandana (I remember a cool Smash render someone made a long time ago where they gave him a hat that wasn't a ball cap).
@@ThaneGaming Ah yes, I think I remember that one, if I'm not mistaken it's a sailor's hat, his clothes as a whole in that design seem to resemble those of old timey sailors.
3:36 That black and blue striped shirt with black pants works really well! That's how his original famicom sprite looks anyway, so personally, I would make that part of his modern redesign, if I was in charge of it. The neckerchief and golden badge also stand out well against the darker clothes. These colors would be different enough from Ness's duds to really sell that he's a different person. Of course, there's even more you could do with it, but at a certain point he still needs to represent his sprite.
I've always considered Ninten's canon design to be like Ness's but with the red bandana/neckerchief instead of a backpack. I also appreciate how Ninten has different eyes compared to Ness, along with looking more like a "badass 90s kid" who tried to be cool. Ness meanwhile brings more of a chill vibe and isn't as wild as Ninten is design wise. I always headcanoned Ninten to have an arrogant, cocky personality but has an empathic side to him. He always wants to be the coolest member of the gang and holds his ego and pride high; meanwhile, he knows when to get serious and change mood when needed. Ness to me is a more modest guy who's very empathetic (more than Ninten for sure). He knows he isn't perfect and tries to improve himself every chance he gets. He lets the journey take its course, rather than rush through it. Makes sense on why he doesn't have the run ability (even if the localization of MOTHER 1 added it when it wasn't originally there). Ness also tends to hold himself to a high standard and can be hard on himself, but he knows when to let things go. That's how I always viewed them at least. Lastly wanted to add that I recently headcanoned Lucas to see Ness as another old brother and a role model, mainly because of subspace and how Ness's personality can match with Lucas's. It's crazy that I got back into the series last year because man I haven't brought up these headcanons in a LONG time. P.S: FELLOW TEDDY STAN AYO?!? He's the best character in MOTHER 1, change my mind. We need more of him pleb.
As a fan artist, I personally don't give Ninten a neckerchief unless its art specifically about the commercial. I'm a purist when it comes to character designs, so I try to stay as true to the canon design as possible (in this case, the clay model).
this is so intresting, its like the fandom gaslit me lol. when I was a kid on my chrome book my wallpaper was of Ness Lucas and Ninten all together in smash style 3d renders and I found the inclusion of NInten's bandana so weird but after a while it just became accepted as Ninten's thing to me. even though it never showed up in any clay renders or in game anywhere I just considered it canon without question. knowing it came from a mother commercial is so odd to me. even in projects where the distinction between ness and ninten isn't necessary like for instance Mother Encore they do it. the mother fandom really did gaslight me into thinking that was completely canon that's so weird lol.
I had a similar experience to yours! I first got into the MOTHER series about 10 years ago and I was confused as to why Ninten always wore a bandana in fan art only (this was before I had seen the commercial). I remember not exactly liking the bandana and various other small changes from Ness at first but it's since grown on me and makes all the sense in the world to differentiate the two more
I didn't really even notice this while editing because I have F.lux (blue light blocking app) on most of the time, which messes with color 😅 good catch!
tbh i actually rly like that Ninten & Ness look so similar. it kinda fits since Mother 2 is supposed to be a direct sequel to Mother 1 and yet it also feels like a strange reboot of it. the similarity in designs make the two feel like brothers from other mothers in a way
I’d love to see Ninten in Smash for representing the start of the series since without the first game you wouldn’t have the two sequels, also the Charlie Brown side of the series. In a perfect world where Sakurai did more with Echoes Ninten would obviously be a Ness Echo but with Buffing (like Shulk) and Debuffing PSI, he can even utilize his Boomerang and Slingshot in his attacks, and more Bat attacks than Ness, he’d have a Mewtwo-esque recovery in 4th-D Slip, I guess his Final Smash could be PK Beam but would basically be like Samus’ Final Smash, I’m aware of the Starman Assist Trophy also using PK Beam.
Hi pangake! It coming from just a promotional ad is pretty neat, I also think it's wild there's no trace of a bandana anywhere else but external material 😅 I hope they give him a bandana in game form some day!
Hmm, that's a good question! There's a lot of bandanas I'm the game that Duster & Salsa can wear (plus the "disguised" Mr. Saturn lol), so I'm sure one of them looks like Ninten's from the commercial. I'll have to check this out later--I know Mr. Saturn's is the same color at least!
Honestly, I have a weird and kind of hot take on it. To get things out of the way, for gameplay purposes and just to tell them apart, Ninten should have the red, white, & blue shirt, the bandana & Franklin badge, everything. However, personally, I don't really like it. It feels kind of overdesigned, if Ness isn't in the game, I think he should just have the same look as the clay models. I think it looks the best. At least the fan design *is* rooted in canon. Ninten should be a costume for Ness in Smash, and he should definitely have the commercial design so no one confuses him for Ness.
I think Ninten is gonna need more than just a bandanna for a smash bros redesign. Even if he were to be an echo fighter he would still need a more distinct silhouette.
That's true--I remember a fan Smash render from a while back where Ninten had a hat that wasn't a ball cap, but more akin to Mario's. I think that could work, and it'd give him a more distinct sillhouette. I also like the idea of Ninten having those PAC-MAN eyes like Paula's 3D design from Ultimate
Just wanted to let you know that I used UA-cam's built in editor to cut out that part, so now your comment won't make sense to new viewers 😅 thank you for letting me know early on so I could fix it, you've helped make this a better video! To anyone wondering, before the edit I initially said that Ninten's name was the same as the company's without the "o" (which is funny because that would be "Ninteno").
They should update his design with him wearing a blue shirt with black stripes and the red bandana around his neck. Have his hat face forward instead of cocked to the side like Ness and have the brim of the hat be black instead of blue.
Ninten headcannons I like! 1: His full name is Nintendo. 2: he’s cousins with Ness, not father and son. (That also makes more sense timeline wise) 3: His favorite game is Knuckles the Echninda in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (achieved by putting a Sonic 3 cartridge on a Sonic 2 cartridge) and overall a very big Sonic fanboy
probably wrong but isnt ninten some kind of actual ancestor to ness? Great Grandfather or even Grandfather? Psy powers most likely skipped his dad but they developped with Ness. This also happened in JoJo Jonathan had powers but not his son however his grandson Joseph is the coolest character in the series.
The thing is that not only is Ness the most popular, but he is basically a better version o Ninten's design, many aspects of of the original design are improved in Ness's, besides, we can't see much of his design in game because of the 8bit style, which makes his clay model design even more forgettable and the fact that this is Ness's design in smash bros, all of that just makes the fandom much more fond of this design as Ness's design, Ness simply owned the design and improved upon it, making Ninten have to be the one to look for a new thing for himself.
