Correction at 0:52 - This official MOTHER 2 manga was translated into English by kenisu3000, with scans by Satsy (who is currently on a long hiatus). The manga has commonly been called "Ness's Great Adventure" likely because of an old Starmen forum post, but "Ness's Adventure Memoirs/Log" is a more correct translation of the title.
I like to imagine that Picky doesn't leave his room ever since that night because he was traumatized by the whole alien thing. His parents fucked off and didn't care if he joined them or not. So Ness' mom and sister would visit him frequently enough to make sure that he's cared for and he grows up to be a decent man because of them.
I really appreciate your more sympathetic angle towards Picky. I know a lot of people just assume he's a knob like his older brother, but like you said, there's a lot more depth to this kid that I think a lot of us trauma'd folk can relate to. I see kid me in Picky a heck of a lot. However, having a positive role model really helped me see who I could be if I started working on myself, so seeing Picky admire Ness and want to be like him, it makes me hopeful for the little dude! If he ever makes a cameo in a future game (as if they're ever gonna happen lol) It would be nice if he were to become a genuinely well-adjusted adult - I like to imagine he runs a little youth centre in Fourside so he can help any kids who are in a situation like his.
Picky’s a textbook glass child imo. Since Porky’s the problem child (bratty, lashes out, insecure, etc.,), Picky would internalize it by being “invisible”to his parents to feel safe. He doesn’t act out, he’s humble, and he’s a lot more responsible despite being a lot younger. I’d like to think that his design reflects this too. Compared to every other Minch, Picky’s very plain looking in comparison.
I am the target audience for this video. This was made for me and me specifically. I'm so glad that someone's out there talking about Picky because I think that he's a really interesting character and that his mere existence makes a good point about the effects of child abuse. Porky is snotty, rude, loud, uncaring, and by the end of it all, completely evil. Picky, on the other hand, is humble, respectful, and mature beyond his years despite being the younger brother. You could blame Porky and every bad thing he's ever done on his parents, and to an extent you'd be right, but the fact that Picky exists proves that no matter who you are or what your upbringing is, you can still choose to be a good person. They came from the same home and lived the same lifestyle, and Picky had every opportunity to attempt to sabotage Ness's mission the way Porky did, but never did. This isn't to say Picky is completely unaffected by the way his parents raised him, though. He's clearly reserved and not very confident, and is forced to act older than he really is to make up for his brother's slack. Picky is not a good person because of the way he was raised, he's a good person in spite of it. I've always seen Porky and Picky as the duality of the effects of dysfunctional parenting, though both are equally hurting. And I think that the fact that Porky gets so much more attention, both by the characters in game and by the narrative of the MOTHER series, despite being the worse brother of the two, is also good food for thought on this subject. I often wish that Picky had more relevance to the plot of the games, since I think he's so endearing, sympathetic and interesting, but sometimes I wonder if his lack of significance is sort of the point. Thanks for the lovely video!!! A whole month dedicated to Porky Minch is right up my alley, so I'll definitely stay tuned!!!
Here's my headcanon for Picky: After the event of Earthbound him and Tracy decided to go on a quest to find out what happened to Porky by revisiting every place that Ness went and also Bateau is a descendent of Picky and Tracy
I didn’t expect such a heartfelt message wrapped up in this video, but I’m not complaining about this nice surprise. It’s always so interesting to see which parts of stories unexpectedly hit a resonant chord. I like to think that Ness and his family are the good influences that Picky needs in his life. Maybe he even gets to hang out with the other three heroes. He could certainly learn a thing or two about different types of strengths from all four heroes.
tbh, even though the whole game is about 'being destined to be powerful' i could imagine the three heroes, mostly Ness and Paula, using their now less used psychic powers to try and train Picky and Tracey, to see if they could also gain psychic powers, mostly to try and make Picky feel better about himself
@@kaialone You are right, Leder mentions in his speech that the people who boarded the White Ship kept their names from the previous world. I always hoped Picky & Porky were nicknames, but with a mother named Lardna I wouldn't be surprised if they were real...
The one thread between all thrre games is that a main antagonist from one game carries into the next. So in the timeline a real Mother 4 existed, my guess is that the villain would be someone who was a major player in M3.
When you spoke of putting on a mask upon your high school years, that resonated quite a bit. Hell... some of your more personal anecdotes resonate more than they should.
My favourite thing abt picky is how depressing he is, porky in my eyes is js trying to matter in life he's trying to serve a purpose that wasn't handed out to him like Ness was so seeing a version of him which just doesn't really care is kinda sad
Really looking forward to watching this one because every time I've mostly not thought about Picky since my last playthrough about a year ago and found myself pretty worried about him.
looks like pork is back on the menu! but this was a nice surprise and a touching video. wonderful work as always and looking forward to the rest of the month :)
Always thought he was cool. He is a strangely rarely discusses character. Not much time spent with him but what is there gives a lot to chew on, as the video proves.
I personally dislike Porky, not as a villain (He's great at that) but as a character, (His cowardice, and ego the size of Jupiter, etc) although I think that's why he was created like that, made to me disliked in some areas. And am either neutral or kinda like Picky, sad he didn't have much screen time
5:33 keep plugiging away... im guessing mr prettyman is also in dept (or homeless) which is why he is "plugging away" when hes down on his luck probably with any woman that will have him
Oh my pork! What a wonderful video this was, on who was low-key one of the more underrated characters in EarthBound, no less. Picky actually seemed like a decent kid compared to his brother. Your anecdotes really hit close to home at times. I don't have a brother, but seeing a close friend or family member go their separate ways from you as life goes on is all part of the experience, personalities and destinies diverge, even amongst siblings. Life can be bittersweet. See you next Porky video.

I believe that the Cycle of Abuse ends with Picky.

Agreed with everything.
Nah, Picky will grow up to be a decent upstanding dude.
Dealing with OCD in middle school and high school is particularly rough. I'm glad you came through on the other side okay.
Picky is my goat, he'd NEVER be evil 🙏

ngl, if Picky was the final party member it would have been cool.
yeah
Answer: no. It's kind of an oddly pervasive assumption in society that good people can't come from bad families.

He's too chill to be evil.
I thought Picky became Bateau in Mother 3, since everyone who escaped on the White Ship took up new identities due to losing thier memories.
@@medicalpotion I talk about that at 12:09!
It's mentioned in the game that the folks in Tazmily kept their names, so unlikely
Unless "Picky" is just a nickname

i think pickys the only minch capable of having morals and standards
In my first ever play through of Earthbound way back in the 90s, Picky knocked out the starman jr.
Maybe next mother game (pfft like that’ll ever happen) picky comes back, and he’s mad his brother ditched him and stuff.
@@2_many_alts I came up with a piece of dialog that could fit, in parallel to Mother 1.
"The forgotten one lamenting his kin, bound to earth."

9:30 This whole section hits super hard, but instead of masking I self isolated.
It's been awhile, but i remember Picky being chill and a little stoic; Porky gets most of the bad parenting and Picky just is chill by avoiding that.
Hell yeah it’s pork month! Special boy month!

2:40 Wario & Waluigi are either roommates or step brothers.
I started suspecting during this video that his name was supposed to be Piggy.

I think Picky ends up as a burnout. He seems good natured, and doesn't act out like his brother, but has no support at home.

like they say "it always starts from home"
That was beautiful, but I can't take off this mask for anyone.
Maybe Lucas comes from Pickey's blood line?
Porky s backstory is very simular to that of Dio s in Jojo phantom blood
Porky is like if Dio was Jotaro's (Ness) childhood friend instead of Jonathan's stepbrother.
