great video man! I was thinking for a second when you were talking about letting the bride put it in by herself what if it came unplugged or loosened somehow but then I remembered the Tascam has a laugh Mike that screws in! I am updating all my audio at the first of the year! Would you suggest going with the zoom h4n Pro or sticking with the regular one is it worth the money to switch?

Think about starting?! This blows my mind. I'm coming to wedding filmmaking from news media production and the idea of not mic-ing talent is absolutely insane. Figure it out. Finesse it how you must, but god; I didn't even consider not mic-ing them.
Pro Tip: Communicate and don't be awkward! It will only be awkward if you make it awkward. Ask one of the girls to help if need be. They are a reflection of you and the energy you bring.

This works like a charm and I've used this method pretty much since I first saw this video! But I had to come back to say that last Saturday, I shot a wedding where the bride's dress was so freakin' tight that there was absolutely no way to hide the cord.... But I've been doing this in tons of weddings and it's the first time it didn't work. Thanks for upping the quality of my videos so much with your fantastic advice, Matt!

Thanks for revealing that neat trick. Turns out I am still thinking far too complicated. In your review I was guessing things like hiding mics in the bride‘s hair (as they sometimes do in musicals) and stuff like that. But this actually makes perfect sense.

What size memory cards do you use for this to allow the recorder to record from the moment it’s put on until the end of the ceremony? How to ensure there is no wind noise? Do you keep the mic on the inside of their clothing? Ever use a tiny dead cat? So many questions! Your videos are fantastic.

Great information, thanks for the video Matt! I looked into mic-ing brides when I first started shooting weddings about 4 years ago now. I bought a similar thigh strap, but I had my wife test it by walking around the house and it slid right off. Have you run into any issues like that? The fear of the mic falling down as she's walking down the aisle was enough reason for me to abandon the idea, but I may have to revisit it before next season. The results speak for themselves. Thanks again!

One thing I'm concern about is the file size is going to be huge. That mic did save my butt once. I put a cheap wireless mic on the pastor which I found out later it was way too loud to use. Luckily I had stuck the Tascom in flowers of the arch behind them. It actually did decent, but of course not as good as what you have done here. As always thanks for the information.

Hey Matt, Question... What if the bride is getting dressed earlier than right before the ceremony? Recently I had a wedding with the first look at 1pm but the ceremony wasn't until 4. Would you turn it on & off during the mid time?
Do you use the sound straight from the Tascam 10l or do you have to process it somehow? I have the tascam but it didn't sound too crispy when I used it. Is there something you do with the audio?
I noticed that the mic quality still sounded pretty good from the groom's mic. what did you use on him? could be one mic on the groom may be a viable option for a small, budget based wedding.
when micing the bride and groom, are you using a dual channel lav set or does your camera allow for 2 different mics to be connected?

do you angle the mic pack towards the back, side, or front? i know it sometimes depends on the dress, but what is the majority do you think? thanks!
If you have to depend on bride maid, etc. to do it. you think it would be place the tascam inside the strap then have them put it on to make it easier for them to just hook up the mic? would give them one less thing to do for some who may not be tech savvy, lol. Also, my concern once they do it is if they did it right, how do you check, mmmmm?

Hi Matt. I've seen a UA-camr tape a DJI lav mic to a dynamic mic for the speeches. Won't this cause interference between the two?
Would this still wokr with the Rode wireless go 2..
When do you hit record? Do you hit record when you mount it and how long can you record? Or do you wait to hit record before the ceremony starts? Thanks for the great video!
Jared Lung as per his previous videos and a practice for other videographers, we hit record before the ceremony starts, you just need to have atleast 8 to 16gb of memory, and your recorder can last more than 8 hours
Hit record and lock it as soon as you put it on them. Don't depend on them to hit record. Audio files are small and you should be fine letting it record for a full day

That’s gonna be tough then! You may wanna look into something like the white instamic to clip onto the brides dress

I purchased the thigh strap to have it when I need it. But I have a wedding this Friday and the bride was totally against this. But I can see more brides being okay with this then not. In like you said Matt their bridesmaid can also go up under the dress, no biggie.

Does anyone also use the Rycote felt "over covers" pad on top of the mic capsule? I'm afraid of leaving that adhesive exposed and it sticking to the brides skin and the mic falling off.
I love this mic so much! I did have a scare once with the brides mic. She accidentally dropped it and it ended the recording. Luckily she told me before there ceremony and I was able to look it over and hit record again. Pheeeww! Close call! I will definitely be adding the thigh strap to my collection now to prevent that from happening again! Thanks Matt for always sharing your wisdom :)

Hey Matt, I've made some bad expiriences with those rycote stickies. I can really recommend "Joe's Sticky Stuff" especially in the summer and when you stick directly on skin. It is amazing stuff and really lasts longer than the rycote ones. What do you think?

very helpful video. sometimes the ceremony is a few hours after the prep and first look, do you just have to keep grabbing the recorder from the bride and keep turning it off and on numerous times throughout the day?
Austin Paz with a 32GB micro SD you can get around 10hours of WAV audio. So you should be good to go once you start! 👍

A question.. When a male installs the microphone you leave it in rec for the whole time, when is a female when do you start recording?
We usually start it 15 minutes before the ceremony
When the ceremony is in the same building as the preps. If the church is far away from the prep than I guess you click on REC just at the entrance of the church?
In this case, for me, it couldn't be a solution as I would look awkward while entering under her dress in front of the church.
I think in this case i'd need to click REC before she's leaving her house heading to the church. I will have more recording but these recorders can make it for up to 8 hours..
random question Matt, do you think I can use the rode mic smartlav+ the same way when it comes to placing it on the subject? I have a windscreen on the smartlav I need to replace but I just ordered 100 of the Rycote Stickies. Could I take the windscreen off of the smartlav + and put a Rycote Stickie on it inside the jacket pocket instead?

I sometimes don’t even use any covers or anything. The wondscreen blocks all the contact and movement audio most ofnthe time

I want to start adding videoography to my wedding packages and am starting from scratch. Do you mic the bride, groom and officiant?
mic the bride, mic the groom and officiant... buy three of these, also plug into the DJ audio board, you can buy an H6nzoom...also an XLR cable and XLR splitter so you can pull feed before the audio hits the dreaded audio board... having an XLR splitter into the DJ receiver will give you and the DJ both an XLR signal...most DJs are clueless and will just say use an RCA cable..PM me if you want massive detail on sound.
Are those stickie are really strong enough to hold the mic there for few hours with moving etc?
I have used them several times. They are worth every penny. I used to use gaff tape triangles. It works reasonably well, but Rycote is much better.
Does that mean you have to upload both the audio file with the video file in a video editor and match the visual with the audio accordingly? Is there anyway it can be connected directly to the phone/camera?
no...this audio will be an idependant audio file...and then youll sync this with your post production editing software.
Do you have any experience with tascams handy recorders like the dr-05? I am hopefully going to be filming my first wedding in the summer (free) and so am operating on a very limited budget but still want to do a good job. I'm trying to decide whether it would be best to use tascams handy recorders and cheaper lav mic's for the bride and groom or a single dr-10l for around the same price. What would you recommend?
I’d probably go with the dr-10L and put it on the groom.
