Recently received my Tascam recorder and watched this video again to input my settings. This tutorial was really great to follow along with. Not too fast, and not too short. Very easy to understand, and even got some humor in there. Thanks again!
I remember watching this video when you just published it. I just bought two and am starting a UA-cam channel and shooting my first wedding in 2 weeks! Thanks for your helpful videos! Epic update: it went bad
i love the video ... just me personally, i would not have auto audio levels because it just sounds like your screaming all the time (the audio is exactly the same without ANY dynamics) .. i WOULD recommend using the limiter so that you don't clip if the speaker gets excited and starts talking loudly. Just put them headphones on, run a test yourself just speaking while the lav mic is on your to find the right level and you should be great. does that make sense ?
Hey Matt, all the settings I agree with, but I would caution videographers from using the Auto Level. If it's a speech with longer pauses, it will bring up the hiss and background noise quite a bit in between the talking. I leave it off and keep the mic gain at M. Also you have the second backup lower volume file to help in case you need it. Thanks again for the video, always enjoy watching them. One day maybe we can film a wedding together, that'd be awesome.
Yeah, I tend to agree with this. I didn't have the backup option before because I was running the old firmware, so knowing that I have that now solves all problems.
@@CliffFennell I personally like to tweek my audio in post. If you have a speaker with a beautiful low voice, it might take away a little of that, but I think its pretty safe. If you have a low rumble sound from an air conditioner in the background then it helps.
Just received my DR-10L. Read the manual and your video just saved me a "ton" of time trying to figure out the settings. Thanks. Brief, concise and well thought out.
Brilliant. I've had a couple of these for about 4 years, but I hadn't updated the firmware so I popped on here to confirm my settings were good and I picked up some tips too - cheers for that!
Using this for the first time in a wedding tomorrow! (Only my second solo shoot wedding) thanks for all the help! You’re actually the reason I purchased this 😄
Thank you! Just got one of these and looking forward to using it at a wedding at the end of this month! Your tips are simple to understand and very informative. You've changed my game going forward.
Hey man I just wanted you to know that i decided to buy the Tascam DR-10L and used your Amazon link! Dig supporting my UA-cam homies! Gonna use it for a simple full-proof way to vlog, do low budget interviews etc... Thanks again. Keep up the good work! wait... I meant GREAT work... (typo)
Been waiting for this ever since you convinced me to get the Tascam! I'll be using it first at MY OWN wedding this month! Thanks for the recommendation and awesome videos as always!
Super helpful and super appreciated. Just starting on learning these tips and tricks and wanted to get up and running ASAP. Thank you for the walkthrough!
Yo just wanted to let you know that you literally sold me from the interview and the settings for this video. Yeah this might be 2 years old, but yo, QUALITY YOU ARE SIR.
Thank you so much for this video. I just got mine in the night before a wedding after I have an h1n crash on me last wedding. I was not looking forward to having to figure out the new system, but you made it as easy as can be!
This was an outstanding video to help me get started. It explains what everything is and why you want particular settings. But I watched the video again and went back and changed some of the settings after using it for a while. For instance, I turned off the setting the splits up the recording into 15 minute increments. Based on what and how I record, I actually didn't like this feature. But I needed a refresher to find what setting that was. So, overall a great video.
Thank you for mentioning the software update! I was watching soooo many other videos and wondering why my setting didn't look the same (Especially the dual record option) You are the man!
Great video Matt. Very concise and descriptive of each function. I was able to program my device along with the video. Took only 7 minutes. Thank you .
Good video. I would definitely recommend checking the audio sample from your camera. My Sony video cameras (not still cameras with video) record at 44.1 khz. I like that the Tascam offers different sample rates.
Matt great video and review, I have gotten into wedding videography and one thing I have been lacking is audio. I will be picking this up tomorrow to use for my next wedding on Saturday! Can’t wait to add audio to my video.
Very well explained, I wish I was able to talk fast and to the point like you. People are getting sick and tired of my slow turtle speech in my videos lol
This is super helpful! Thanks for taking the time to make this overview. Just got one of these for work. It took me a little while to get over the fact that you can't monitor audio (a little nerve racking when filming high profile people) but it hasn't let me down yet!
Wesley Aguilar I mean yes, you can technically monitor your audio, but you have to plug in headphones to do that which wouldn’t be practical in most filming situations.
@@nathanfarris1578 oh, it seemed like you were saying you couldnt monitor the audio while recording. Technically that is. Yeah. Makes sense practically. Just hope for the best! Lol
Thanks Mike, I ordered my DR-10L based on your recommendation. Unfortunately I ordered this while at work. Sorry mate, I realise now I should have used your link for a bit of $$ into your account. Using it tomorrow for the first time I will be doing a hybrid shoot.
Just got mine, this thing is amazing. Portable and very easy to use. I can see it for most of my common shoots, fits in my camera bag with no issues. I can also see it as a great back up for bigger shoots, how many times the wireless mics can cause issues. Good sound all around, g reat investment.
Really appreciate the setup Matt, so precise, informative and easy to follow along. Just starting the my creative filming journey and it's great to have these small but important things in place.
Thank you, just bought the DR-10L based on your recommendation and videos! Appreciate you taking the time to do these, they are excellent... Even a bone-head like me understood them. :)
Thanks heaps Matt!!! Mine just arrived this morning. Perfect timing! Always love your videos. Dont know how you find the time to make them inbetween shooting weddings. Haha!
Great video, Matt! I took your advice and bought one! Gonna use it for audio out on the ocean while I'm fishing! The GoPro mics weren't cutting. Ironically though, I always take my chest cam audio for some reason it's usually pretty good. Where I normally fish there are 16-knot winds on an average day. Thank you again for your intuitive video and for your recommendation!
All you do is go in premiere pro and select the video with its linked audio and the tascam audio track and right click to pull up the menu where you select synchronize.. Thats it.. Also you can zoom all the way into the audio files and line them up that way.. Basically how you do it is zoom all the way out and line up the two audio tracks based on the shapes of the waveform. Then zoom all the way in in line it up precisely if it's not already.. Then listen back at equal volume and determine if it's in sync..if it is then you can delete the camera audio and move the tascam audio to the spot where the camera audio was and then link it to the camera. I'm sure all of this can be done in Final Cut as well with a quick UA-cam search.
I've asked this question to Matt before and he has eloquently suggested Plural Eyes as the software add-on to help expedite this process. however, what Zach describes in his solution below is exactly what Plural Eyes does without the added cost, but more automatically. remember the big quality of this device is that it also records a second track at a chosen decibel rate below your original, giving you a whole other track to use and sync that is safety for those moments that got overly limited or peaked.... it really is not that difficult, but just another thing.... I am buying mine today through his links so he gets a boost for his gracious time and counsel. good dude!
Hey Matt. I left you a comment/question, continued watching your video and you answered my question. I then deleted the comment, but realized comments help your channel grow. SO I'm leaving this comment to replace that comment, so that you have a comment. Haha. Blessings.
Okay, I tried your settings, on an outdoor shoot, and the result was that the higher channel was a bit too high, and the lower-level channel was a bit faint. Live and learn, I guess. Do you know of any mixing tricks where I can blend these together into a single, more robust track? (I also used the lav mic that came with the Tascam, which can't be very good. But I'll probably set my upper recording to a lower level, and make the safety recording only 6db lower.)
I would be curious to hear test video comparing auto-level vs Mid-gain. I’ve always been taught never use auto anything...however...I’ve read a lot of people use auto-level with the Tascam DR-10L.
Hi Matt if you record each person with record on all the time how do you sync up the footage to the sound as there must be a huge amount of sound without picture to deal with. I do realise that syncing the sound to the picture can be done easily in FCPX or Premiere but what happens to the sections of sound with no picture.
Just bought a few and love them! Wondering if this could possibly take the place of my on camera mic if i just attached it to myself? may be a silly question but im a newb!
Hope this helps you guys setup your DR-10L! 😁 If you missed my review of this recorder, you can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/Usj4pVoZpH4/v-deo.html
I love that love that little light fixture in the background. Where can I find it?
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson man this was done so gooood
Just got my DR-10L and matched your settings, Thank You very much!!!
why mono and not poly file type? is poly (I assume this means stereo) not good on the 10l?

Epic update: it went bad
Oh no! What happened? Was it the wedding itself or something to do with the Tascam settings not producing great audio?
I thought knowing the technical stuff is sufficient, but I just learned that having experience tops that! Thanks for sharing this.
I just love your thumbnails! You always look like an overjoyed kid who just got everything he wanted on Christmas morning! Lol.

Can we film a wedding together? lol
Also also, using the limiter raises the noise floor. Best bet is to dual record with -12db and set your gain to M or lower.
What do you think about leaving on the LOW CUT?

Have you noticed a hiccup in between 15min increments while using Track Inc? Just loosing a second or so as it saves and starts again?
From my own experience, I have not noticed any a loss of audio. Putting the 2 tracks in premiere next to each other sounds like its 1 file!
I noticed this issue too, and is why I clicked on this video. It's a major problem and may have ruined the video I'm working on.
I have never noticed this. Been using multiple ones for over a year.
