    Helpful, I have bought the M10 Monochrom as my first Leica - and am now planning on the M10R.
    Normally I am using PhaseOne cameras or my zone plate. Your approach and authenticity is much more accessible than the more technical reviews. Thanks 🙏🏻

    First time I shot an M was in 63...does that count? Learned with 120 roll film, then the M for a few years before Nikon seduced us all with the F. Now, after letting your words roll over and through memory I am drawn to the image of an arc. Maybe my own peculiar arc is leading me back to an M, if only because I could relive through your words all those wondrous joys you just experienced - and now I know I miss those feelings. Taking time to truly enjoy the act of focusing, because that one simple act takes you deep inside the act of image creation, I dare say much more so than pressing halfway down on the shutter and letting a stream of algorithms take over the creative process. Anyway, I hope your journey takes you down as many interesting paths as my cameras took me. Happy trails.

    Another aspect of the new sensor and its ISO performance (as in the M10 Monochrom) is that you can use higher ISO values to allow faster shutter speeds and thus avoid camera shake. Regarding focus, in addition to using the rangefinder, you can utilize zone focusing or hyperfocal focusing along with a higher aperture value in order to facilitate shooting on the street. Virtually everything in the range indicated on the lens barrel will be in focus.

    I don't know if you will now see this (2022) and respond, but it has been my experience that gains in perceived sharpness with higher megapixels are offset by gains in blur due to hand movement when shooting handheld. It is not that more megapixels causes more hand movement, of course, but, rather, that blur caused by hand movement becomes for evident or visible with more megapixels, just as details become more evident. I have seen the difference in this regard between my 24mp and my
    my 36pm cameras. The effects of hand shake on perceived sharpness are clearly more evident in the 36mp files than in the 24pm files. Using a tripod, however, eliminates hand shake and its consequences, and the 36mp file are noticeably sharper than the 24mp files. For hand held, on the fly shooting, 24mp is much better than 36mp and even more so for higher mp sensors. If you shoot using a tripod, definitely go for the higher megapixels; if not, 24mp seems to be a sweet spot. But, of course, it will depend on the extent of your hand movement.

    I owned both an SL and a 1st generation Monochrom. I’ll come back to that. I couldn’t help notice you were using the 35mm Summilux. I only had one lens with my Monochrom, the Summilux. Yes it’s very expensive (more than my Monochrom) but it was worth EVERY penny. I made some incredible portraits of friends and my daughter, even in low light. And, as a street photography camera, that combination of body and lens was the best combo for street photography. If I just wanted to point and shoot, I would set the lens to f16 and go. That lens was astonishing in its capture of detail for point and shoot. If I were to go back to Leica, I know it would be an M body (probably M10 Monochrom) and the 35mm Summilux. Btw, the b&w photos I got were head and shoulders above the color photos I took with the SL and then turned to b&w in post. I would say they were very close to some of my medium format b&w.

    I would love to have a M10 but I think I would prefer the Q2 because it has autofocus (when you need it) and it also got optical image stabilization.

    • @DriveCancelDC
      @DriveCancelDC 3 роки тому

      The Q2 is the most practical Leica camera to date, minus the Leica (More like Panasonic) SL series. The M line is just an attempt at clinging to what made Leicas great in the film days, but frankly, it just doesn't work as well for digital and at high megapixel counts a rangefinder is not accurate enough. Also most of Leica's lenses aren't good enough for the price on high megapixel cameras, Voigtlander and *gasp* Sony are putting out superior lenses at 1/4 the price. I'm going to put a 35 f/1.4 Nokton on my M7.

  • @sjones1017
    @sjones1017 4 роки тому +2

    Before considering a Leica M, first consider if a rangefinder in general is for you. Rangefinders are simply not for most photographers. Also, if interested, learn about zone focusing and using the lens's depth of field indicator, which can sometimes be more advantageous than the fastest autofocus setup. I have an M2, and for me, and as the Snapchick consistently underscores when reviewing Leica, it's the tactility and the process that are key draws. No spec sheet can account for these subjective preferences, so you just have to pick up any of the one Leica variants and see for yourself.

    Thank you for a really positive review... it’s nice to see how your reviews do not waste time on negativity whilst not flossing over limitations. I love small light camera systems such as the Olympus om4ti and the Leica M system and as such it is very interesting to see the M10R and hear about it.
    It will sell of course but it is far less radical than the monochrome version which really has no competitors.. if you want a digital camera to get closer the experience of film photography but with the advantages of a digital sensor then the monochrome gives a file that is essentially a digital monochrome negative with the focus of intent and technical advantages of that. This is entirely different to using a colour sensor both in execution (for example using colour filters as per film) and in the final raw file which is uncannily similar to a drum scan from a medium format film negative. This cannot be emulated by any colour sensor camera.
    The M10R on the other hand seems very nice but it is competing directly with many extraordinary cameras such as the z7 or the a7Riv (and numerous others) and as such is a less compelling purchase. I note this as a largely mono photographer but I think it is none the less true.

    I’m glad Leica does what it does, even though I don’t need a Leica, and can’t afford one in any case. But, to see a company take their efforts to the Nth degree in following their philosophy of quality and durability is sort of inspiring. My Panasonic Leica gear and Minolta CLE kit let me share in the Leica mystique, without going homeless. Thanks for your insights. 🙂

    A comparison between the M10R and the X1D 2.0 would be fun. Similar resolution in the sensors and the 35 'Lux is about the same as the 45 on the X1D when factoring in the X1Ds crop factor. Enjoy the M10R. I've been an M shooter for the past 10 years. The simplicity of the M experience justifies the price for me.

    I have seen this review twice, like it 😀. I'm an M shooter. Digital -- Typ240 -- and I have enough lenses from Leica, Zeiss and Voigtländer. I have been shooting Nikon since 1969 but went to Leica when going Digital.
    My only problems with M is telephoto & macro. Live view, electronic viewfinder and adapters makes those genres possible but my focussing my 400mm is like flipping a coin. The M10 viewfinder is much better, but I might switch to M10, and this body is tempting.

    I use an A7R3, but with a bunch of old manual Minolta lenses that my mother used to use. I do not understand the seeming modern phobia for manual focus - is it that our smart phones have made us dumb? I don't know. But I'm trying to teach my own kids to start shooting with manual-everything because that way they have the foundational skills to know how to tame the automatic features when they inevitably fail to quite deliver. Don't have the budget for Leica, but appreciate what they're doing here.

    • @villemononen5303
      @villemononen5303 4 роки тому

      To me, big point of "smart" phones / "social" media seems to be disconnection, and conscious dumbing down the masses. Don't have to think so much anymore, just let google do the thinking for me and soon the AI. Problem with that is, then soon there's no original opinions anymore. But, it's the times and trends of now. There's plenty of good there aswell, but with the current levels of mass addiction, the phone seems the master, the human the host. How much different to any other substance abuse, i wonder? It should be the other way around, the toy should be just a tool... And people, individuals empower themselves from within. Time to rise above the games of society.
      I love using vintage lenses too! Digital body + vintage lens is a nice combo indeed. Even though modern lenses are nice too, mainly for quick action and kids, manual lenses have the feel that modern lenses lack. They make you slow down, and really fall in love with the lenses, the pictures, the feel you get from them. And often, they are not such investment either = very little material nor financial burden. Also, manual lenses have more character of their own, and little quirks here and there. Many of the modern lenses seem digital and sterile in their output, talks something about these times...

    Great video. Great images. Thank you! But honestly I just don’t get it. I learned on an old all manual SLR and shot B&W film. So I love the experience. The “work” one needs to do, at least in taking the image. The ability to look around the frame (if one uses 50mm lenses). The quality of the Leica glass. The compactness. And yes the M10R is possibly the first Leica M that can come a little closer to justifying its price (if one buys it used). But compare and contrast to say a Fuji GFX50R. Better sensor. Better images. Better dynamic range. Much better immediate output from the camera and no need to purposefully underexpose to avoid highlights being blown out. Far cheaper. And far more versatile. All within a similar style system (yes I know it’s an EVF and not an OVF but the viewfinder and composition experience is not dissimilar and I actually prefer to see what I will actually shoot which one does not with the Leica due to the parallax issues and lens blocking some of the OVF). It just feels more precise. One’s hit ratio is better. And one needs to spend a lost of time in post with the Leica. I don’t enjoy this and feel this takes something away from the art. Just a personal view.

    Is a leica camera worth it?... It's purely a subjective choice, you'll either love it... or hate it especially the manual focusing models. I owned an M9 a while back but it's long since sold... Why? Well, I found it difficult to focus due to being a wearer of glasses as the focus screen (the small focus box) was too small to see clearly. Maybe if I'd persevered with it I’d still own it but I didn't... And I'm no stranger to manual focusing as I come from the days of film shooting with the OM1n and a 50mm Zuiko lens, which had a clear and bright focus screen.
    Now, if I had the means to buy a Leica I’d still do so but it wouldn’t be an M model, but I’d go for the Q2 as it fits my needs... a weatherproof fixed lens, large sensor, that can be cropped to my needs.
    If you have the means, and are tempted to buy an M model, I’d recommend renting one for a week or so and test it... it’ll save you thousands if you don’t like it, or can’t get used to the manual focusing the camera (I lost about 2 to 3 thousand pounds as a result of not testing the camera)... OUCH!
    PS one way around the manual focusing as mentioned above, that wasn’t available to an M9 user, is the EVF attachment that can be bought to work with the M10 cameras... purist will be spinning on the spot right now 😂

      Yeah, I started out with a RF for two years before I bought my first SLR & MF, (F2A & 500 C/M) over four decades ago. By then, I had learned RF is NOT well suited for left-eye dominant and eyeglass wearers. Even in the digital era, my Q EVF is a joke when compare with my older D3. Luckily, there are AF & LCD, that finally allowed me to add a Leica (as a walkabout camera) to my collection. 😂

    The M didn't need a huge sensor, but it may be advantageous to some people, if I personally wanted 40 megapixel then I would buy a more advanced all round camera (Sony a7r IV) I just don't think the M range is the type that needs or benefits from entering the megapixel race.

      Before owning the Q2, I would tend to agree. However, I think 40 megapixels really is very versatile for cropping. I do understand what you mean though given the primary use cases for this camera.

    Great cameras, but honestly, overpriced. Their lenses are even worse in this regard. However, if you want to get started in the Leica system, I'd suggest to anyone to try out an old Leica IIIf film camera and M39/LTM screw mount lenses. You won't pay a small fortune for one and they're fun to use. With the occasional CLA, they'll far outlast any modern camera (as will any fully manual film camera), where if the modern Leica's electronics goes, you end up with a very expensive paperweight. But, if you want the modern conveniences and have very deep pockets, then buy a Leica digital M series camera. You won't beat one for quality.

      I actually like the screwmount bodies more than the M bodies, if more for the experience of using one than anything. I’ve had a IIIf for over 20 years and it’s the first thing I reach for, especially when I need something light and pocketable or something I can carry just on my day-to-day activities

    sorry but maybe you push too much or maybe I don't like HDR kind of work at all... whatever the case are, color saturation and that image result it seem very poor to me.

    Most Leica cameras like this have absolutely no grip at all. So you need a neckstrap and to carry the camera like a 75 year old turist.

      It's a weird direction many camera facturers went for a long time, but now they're starting to add some grip and feel again. Since the Panasonic GM1 (great camera still) i've started to add extra grips with adhesive backing to many smaller cameras, and they make a world of difference. Prices for these generic (but often good) grips typically range between 10-20€. I've often used the Flipbac FBG3 from ebay. So, it's not such a biggie. I prefer grip, then wrist band, then neckstrap the last.

    The emperor wears no clothes: give me $1500 budget (half that for APS-C) and I can pair a modern mirrorless camera with a Sigma summilux-class lens, and produce the same and better images. But then I wouldnt be in the red-dot club. Oh well, I'll cry about that continuously on the vacation(s) I take my camera on with the saved money.

      Not so the monochrome versions ... although it’s of course arguable if they result in better images or are value, there is no disputing that they are technically unique on the marketplace today and as a film photographer they come by far closest to the experience of using film. The value of that is entirely different for each of us of course.

    My Sony a7iii with my Batis lens series beats the Leica m10-r to the punch when it comes to image quality and it’s a 24mp camera. This is why 40mp is just BS it’s about the hardware inside. I just think it’s embarrassing they are trying to fool ppl and buy this Leica camera. Just buy a Leica Q and save your money and buy a canon r5 or a Sony a7iii for a true experience. Leica is great but just not good anymore in today’s standards

    I don't like Leica's digital M cameras. People say they buy them for "the experience", but if you want a Leica experience, you're free to NOT use AF and can buy manual lenses (especially with adapters). Paying $8000 to 'remove" features is laughable. And digital is a very expendable format, I bought an M7 and it was expensive but will last a lifetime. My other issue is Leica's lenses are not as good as the Leica cult pretends they are. $6000 for a Leica 35 f/1.4 that is a blurry mess compared to lenses that cost under $500 (google the philip reeve review and read the comments, he tested that awful lens on an M10 and a Sony). The Leica experience makes more sense for film, I use a Zeiss Planar with my M7.
