I've been slowly moving towards getting a Leica M. The one that I think strikes the right balance for me right now is the M9, in terms of look (love the CCD colors), resolution (18mp is sufficient for basically everything I do), and price. I love that there will be cameras like this one to move to eventually once I've invested in the lens system. In the mean time, my X100V can get mistaken for a Leica when properly social distancing. 😉

Glad I took a break to watch this. I woke up this morning knowing that the release was coming. I expected to have that familiar "gotta have it" anxiety. But I didn't. And that in itself was satisfying. As someone trying to make up for years - and years - of not being a photographer, I was on this mad rush to own everything I could. Gear = Better Photographer, right? Ok, I grew up a bit to match my age. I'd never apologize for owning Leicas. How I spend my money is my business. But after shedding pounds from my bag, I'm content. About that red dot. It seems that my choices have been to forego it on both of my cameras. That's ok too. (Oh wait...the dot is on the CL I still keep in the bag. Hey, remember when you had a CL? Back then...). Seriously, thanks for the compact review hitting the important points. Keep on keeping on, my friend!

I think this. If you subscribe yourself to the notion that having a better camera will make you a better photographer then you must also accept the tricky paradox implied by such.
We all know that to make a photograph requires many skills least of which is the camera itself, so therefore the camera you choose is almost a non essential thought. However as photographers we know this simply isn't true. as surely whilst any camera will do; there are particular cameras, or lenses such as those from Leica, Hasselblad, Alpa, Phase One XT which make you 'feel' differently about your photography, and this is an important part of the art often forgotten.
I wonder how Alberto Korda felt when he took one of the world's most iconic and arguably the most reproduced image from a seemingly random candid frame of 35mm film taken on a Leica M3?
The image of course being that of a young Che Guevara which has graced the walls and T-shirts of teenagers across the Globe (probably not North Korea or China). for decades Years later Hasselblad gave him a 6x6500cm and most of his work was subsequently taken on that, but his Leica fetched a vast sum, at auction due to the legacy. but I was lucky enough to be able to purchase his Hasselblad kit for just 4K last year from his nephew complete with authentication papers and Kordas name scratched into the bottom of all the pieces in the collection. I have it, but don't use it much, but I don't care because of the way it makes me 'feel' about photography. And I think thats the point.
I use a Hasselblad H5D50c everyday. Every single day, and it is a gorgeous thing but in the back of my mind is the camera in a drawer, Just because of its very being it makes me feel as though I am a better photographer and that I too am capable of doing something extraordinary just like Korda, and many others have done. Korda captured a single candid frame which went onto captivate not just a nation but a an entire world and the image stood for many things including freedom. You cannot get more expressive than this as a photographer. I covet Leica, not just because it is thing of outstanding simplicity, or the special magic conveyed through it's numerous coatings, or its quirky range of MF lenses and the 'think twice before you shoot' attitude, or indeed whether it harks back to cameras of an era gone by, but also because of what it represents to me and other photographers too. And that is quite simply to be inspired. And for that, there can be no value, or indeed cost.

I find the pricing interesting in the US. In Germany we pay:
M10: 6850
M10 P/D : 7500
M10 R: 7990
M10 M: 8200 €
so the Monochrom is far the most expensive and the R is (logicly) more expensive then all 24MP versions.
I would like to see a comparison between this one and M10-P,
I'm fine with 24 Mpx, but the longer exposure times of the new R are very tempting.
Great video as always. I agree about the Visoflex.... Not sure what the hold up is, as it would dramatically improve the experience with longer glass. Still, my plans for an M10M may have just changed since I can’t have both.

Interesting review of the M10-R. I started on a Spotmatic with a 50mm f/1.8 and always wanted a Leica. I was able to procure one, an M4-2 with a 66mm Elcan F/2 in 1976. Unfortunately, I was having problems with setup and couldn't find any dealer to help. I wrote a letter to Leitz in New Jersey in 1977 and the FBI was at my door a couple days later. Seems that I procured a stolen Navy Intelligence camera body similar to the one with the 66m Elcan Lens for sale today for $155,000 on Ebay. It wasn't until ten years ago I could afford another Leica. I purchased an M6 which I really like and a good rangefinder replacement for my Spotmatic and Olympus XA (Poor Man's Leica in the 1980s). I struggle with spending money on a M-series digitals but the M10-R seems to be a worthy investment. I have a used M9 which creates great images but the ISO is limited as well as other functionality. Somehow I still feel much more comfortable investing in lenses and film bodies but $8k is a real stretch.
Also, although I abhor cropping images, the flexibility of having 40megapixals and having fewer lenses is a real plus. The latest 28mm Elmarit takes wonderful images and with the M10-R would open up a lot of possibilities, but would change the way I approach composition.

hear hear on the visoflex. I understand that at least part of it has to be plastic for GPS reception (and keeping the GPS is an absolute must). But surely the base could be narrowed so that it doesn't cover the shutter speed dial, and the resolution could be increased.
Hugh's getting a new camera... And leave it to Leica to have a Bond villain at their unveiling. Those guys are pure class. But more to the point, I'd cheerfully dump all my Canon stuff at this stage in life to simply futz around with this body and two primes. My only real concern? The Monochrom still looks incredible to me.

I love rangefinder cameras - probably because my first camera was my dads old Minolta AL-F, and I have been looking for a new rangefinder to add to my collection. If I win the lottery, I'll get myself an M10-R, but for now I'll have to settle for a second hand film camera - if I can find one, I like...
More expensive than the M10, same as the M10M, LESS than the M10-P and D? Pricing in the USA is curious... Here in Germany the prices are M10 < M10P/D < M10R < M10M

My only question is why didn’t Leica just include the 50mp q2 sensor?
Plus one on the visoflex upgrade. If I were being a piggy, I’d ask for a hybrid viewfinder so that you can switch between the rangefinder and a built in EVF, but I’m not sure whether that will ever happen. The R is definitely calling me for all the reasons you mentioned, but the sucker in me is waiting for M10-RP (or whatever it maybe) so you know I can pay an extra grand to not have the red dot there.....
Very, very nice video. Thank you. Personally, given my finances and eyeglasses, a Fujifilm X-Pro3 beat out a used Type 240 on the basis of a better (vastly) viewfinder. To be considered, especially if eye relief is as big a thing as it is with me. But if indeed the M10-R does more resolution AND better high ISO performance than the M10 (which is in turn a tad better at high ISO than the Fuji), I will henceforth lust after it unabashedly. And, oh yeah. These things are tools and what they look like doesn't/ isn't supposed to matter. But truly the Leica is beautiful IMHO and the Fuji is kinda ugly. Just sayin'

It is interesting, after just having watched the Leica video on lens design and history, I question if we have reached the point where the M lenses are not good enough to handle the increased resolution of the M10M and the M10R. The MTF curves that they show, clearly (to me), indicate that 24MP is the sweet spot for most M glass. Would be interested in your thoughts on this?
Great question! I assumed the same thing. Bad assumption. When adapted to my SL2, images from the Elmar 24, Summicron 50 and Elmarit 90 just look better than they do coming from the M10-P I happen to have in-house. This is not to say these are at the same level of resolution, contrast and correction of, say, my SummicronSL 35 - but for the first time I can SEE how beautiful they do render. Every one of them is a keeper.
@@3BMEP Having now finally bit the bullet and bought the SL2 AND upgraded my M240 to M10R (its a long story) it seems to me that even the "best" M lenses, in my case the M0.8 set does not seem to have the resolving power to be the "ideal" on either camera. I agree with you High that they look very good, and better than on 24MP but with smaller pixels comes the need for a smaller circle of confusion. I experienced this same phenomenon with the Cine cameras transitioning from 1920-HD to 4K-UHD and now higher. Yes, old lenses have great vintage looks and imperfections but the modern ones (especially ARRI Signature and what we're hearing about the Leitz Cine Primes) are (as DT so often evokes as to make meaningless) like nothing anyone's seen before! Further proof is that I now have my first SL Cron the 35, I can attest that it is everything that everyone has been saying. The higher resolution is paramount, but mostly the higher contrast, in this case "micro contrast" is what's palpable., and as and old geezer the auto focus is fun. Bottom line, I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that Leica will over time replace the current M lens line top to bottom. Stand by

My type 20 on the TL2 is far from being good enought to make à precise focus with the 90mm ELMARIT... Once I take this little jewel that I know you love so much (the M90 Elmarit) on my S1R, it's like if it's another Lens !

Good observation of the value to retain colour info when creating a b+w image in post. If the M10R offers the same resolution and ISO noise response, this would seem to nullify the M10 Monochrom?
The Monochrom has a different rendering than the R (so that's a completely subjective thing), but it also does offer at least one stop better high ISO performance.
Got me contemplating cancelling my c300 Mark iii preorder to get an m10r 🤔 😂
And yes about the cropping capacity. You can travel light when you have room for cropping!!!
I take my M 24mm f/3.8 and the 90mm APO SL SUMMICRON on my S1R and that’s it...
I just can imagine the power of this M10-R with a summilux M24 and the M90 Elmarit... well only can imagine, I can’t afford them! (Except the Elmarit ;) )

I'm sure it's a nice camera, but the price doesn't justify what the camera can do, it's a luxury item and Veblen goods. I'm happy with my Fuji X100V.
Since I would at best be able to afford one Leica lens, I would take the Q2.
I was foolishly hoping that they will have an inbuilt EVF to make focussing easier for all those megapixels.

How easy is it add color to/or colorize monochrome images ? I see a lot of information on converting color to black n white but very less information on colorizing bnw. Is that exercise worth it? Just a curious question ...
Great question, and the answer is the reason why I will not buy a monochrom: it is not worth trying to recreate the color of a scene from a monochrome capture: the color information is just not there.

It looks good, but I still see little to tempt me to upgrade my M240, and at least 2 things to stop me (reduced battery life & no video). Still, with about 400,000 images on the clock, my 240 has got a good few years left in it yet!

Great review for reading between the lines of the spoken words. Sounds like you weren't that impressed with the R then Hugh. I struggle to understand Leica's positioning of its models relative to one another, needs clarity. Leica could be the Porsche of the camera market and totally dominate the premium and super-premium market if its positioning was clearer and its entry point lower, they already have the brand cachet, a clear patent advantage in lens technology and superior product/build quality - its just increasingly difficult to see who each type of Leica camera is aimed at. When does a Sofort user become a V/D/C Lux user become a Q user become an X user become a CL user become an M user become a SL user? Way too complex! Also as you say, the Visoflex, as an essential addition for those with ageing eyes, is a joke as an accessory in its total lack of design integration and low performance. Still I guess the next model will be the M11 or M10R-P with 40 MP and built in EVF and will be $1000 more than the M10-P...

Yes. Especially if your eyes are better than mine and/or you intend to shoot wider than 28mm or longer than 50mm.
I'm not so sanguine about Leica's rep, not in digital, at least, after having to spend $850 or so to replace the bad shutter for my M8 after only 13000 exposures. Or after hearing of the M9 sensor issue. If they are going to charge so much they should, at minimum, make good on their screw-ups.
Leica is like the Porsche 911, every new model is better than the one it replaced! And, this one won't be any different, for now, she's beautiful: she's a Leica! Will it be manufactured in Germany or Portugal?
I do not know with certainty, but I assume some components are manufactured in Portugal; final assembly in Germany.

I read somewhere that the factory in Portugal manufactured +/- 80% of Leica's production, from binoculars, cameras and lenses and not just parts, was the whole article. The famous ones: "designed in Germany" and the factory in Germany: "made in Germany". Leica's Adventure in Portugal is really an adventure! If we imagine half a dozen Germans arriving in Portugal, in the "70", without knowing how to speak Portuguese and the Portuguese without knowing how to speak German, and in the meantime learn to manufacture binoculars, and for four years. And with an attempt to occupy that place by communists in the middle... But, the Portuguese quality was so good that they decided to manufacture cameras and lenses!

Please make a new M that is smaller. No bigger than the size of the Leica MP. Even though it has come a long way, compared to my MP, the M10 looks much bulkier.
For the price one would expect autofocus, IBIS and two card slots. But I love the fact that it doesn't offer video...

The SL35 arrived after the book. But it is magnificent. Then again, it’s also much bigger than a Summicron-M. I will have more to say about this over time, as I am still developing my feelings about the trade offs of each.

Understood. But this is not always the case, and we are committed to successfully preserving all of the elements of a photograph’s intent when we crop - or not crop at all. It is also the case that his iconic St. Lazare image was in fact cropped.

I think using M10-R is equivalent to killing M10 and M10-P.Personally, I use a high-pixel camera, so I know very well that this is very harmful. Leica should come up with the new M11.The real reason is that sales are currently stagnant.?

Hi, I am kind of disappointed with m10r. I expected more, but I also know that Leica is not a technology-leading company. These gentlemen also have to think about the ergonimics of their cameras. They at least can check the canon 5r ergonomics. What I appreciate about Leica is that their perception of the concept of photography is correct. They do not adulterate photography with the video thing. I expect a more dynamic range in black and white photography in the future, with hope. best.

As someone who actually owned M Camera and lenses - unlike the keyboard cowboys - the biggest problem is the Price Tag. Leica should have achieved this kind of improvement with a reduced price tag, not increased. They are becoming untouchable due to the crazy stupid pricing. I walked out of 5 Guys because they jacked up a single patty burger to over $9 with no fries and drink. I got the $7, number 1 at Chick Fillet with coke and fries. That's what Leica needs. Be accessible to more people. No one is expecting a $1,000 M and a $500 M lens, but a $5,000 M 10 with 35mm Summicron would save them from selling more shares to Hedge Funds. Leica buyers are disappearing like the Harley buyers. No Millennial will spend $8,000 for a Camera and another $5,000 for a decent M Lens. Under normal circumstances it goes a bit like this. We need a new camera. And after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing putting some shelves up, trip to the tip, walk the cat etc, I manage to demonstrably put forward a very convincing argument on exactly how this new thing, whatever it is, will increase our turnover massively, create huge profit margins which of course it never does, your Honour, but after a while I get the go ahead to purchase it anyway. And when I do this is more or less the precise moment guilt and regret fight it out with reason common sense and eventually the wrong one wins and it ends up on ebay for a tenth of its original value somewhere in the world where no doubt another argument will ensue because of it.
But this is different. This is in a whole new league of different, this is special because this is not a need at all.
This is a 'want'. A must have, a necessary addition for absolutely no reason at all. There is no business case to be put, no sanitised facts and figures to present no profit and loss charts, no lawns to be cut, trash to be taken out or cats to be washed.
We are in a new territory with no birthdays on the horizon and if I don't choose my next words carefully, it could well be no birthdays at all.

Like your video and your personal approach to the M. However Henri Cartier-Bresson, an M user if there is one, he was against cropping, as cropping is like if Picasso cuts into his canvas,! I’m old enough (56) to use film (M3) and digital (M-E 240) to be able to frame and get closer or further to compose when I take the moment. That for me is M. However, unlike HCB, other legends of photography had no problem with cropping…for example Elliott Erwitt or Josef Koudelka. And honestly, I like their work even a slight bit more than HCB
the price is rather offensive
You walk round in the dark with one of those cameras? Noting your post production where so much can be changed using a lot cheaper camera system why would anybody want to buy an overpriced system and then have to work on post production to get good images? At those prices you should not need post production the camera should do it all! Are the end images really any better than a Fuji or Nikon etc.?
