Cameras like Fujifilm are known for producing beautiful images and we decided to compare the Leica to Fuji and Sony to see what the differences were

    Thanks Usman, another good and interesting video. I have heard or read of anyone else reporting softness in their images. Would an APO lens be sharper I wonder? Could it have been slightly out of focus? Did you try focusing with a. Visoflex? I know you checked with Leica and I trust you tried everything it the image softness just seems a bit odd.

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  3 роки тому +1

      Yes absolutely.
      The SG doesn’t create the same kind of profiles though, instead you produce ICC profiles. They’re a heck of a lot better than standard color checker profiles you produce in lightroom.

    • @vernonsza
      @vernonsza 3 роки тому +1

      @@Sondercreative That's good to know. I switched from Lightroom to Capture One anyway. I guess that would mean for more practical uses, I would have to create a dozen profiles for different lighting situations (sunny, cloudy, tungsten, etc). I get why a studio photographer would use it for each session but general stuff like street and documentary photography means having it in every scene just isn't practical.

    Good review + brought back fond memories of working and going out in Leeds. I’ve just shifted to Leica after some enjoyable years shooting Fuji Xpro1 and more recently Xpro2. I picked up a SL for the same price as a new Fuji Xpro3 and so far so good. The principal advantage is the viewfinder for focusing manual lenses, particularly some cheap but good vintage lenses which are less suitable for use on a crop sensor. For me the SL presents a nice middle way + the JPEGs and RAW files have a very nice look to them when compared with the Fuji, especially in Photoshop (Capture One was just frustrating for me). There is one thing I’ve found though, the Leica is less forgiving, where as the Fuji produces consistently good shots with less effort, so for quick paid work the Fuji is still great, but for enjoyment of the craft, Leica is special. So I think a second test is in order, see if Dale Photographic will lend you an SL, but be warned, you won’t want to give it back.

    Keep it up! Anyone worried about the relative sharpness need not. Haven’t we all observed the trend of digital photographers clawing for vintage lenses suddenly because seeing a model’s soul in LR isn’t so appealing? Film photographers like me have because the competition is boosting prices 😂. Sharpness isn’t everything. Leica is not in my price range but holding a M3 for a few minutes was quite the experience. If renting film bodies were an option, I would do a short project with a M2 and 35mm lens. Alas, I will hang on to my trusty Nikon FM and 50mm Ais. She has never failed me.

    Interesting review - as for the discomfort holding the Leica, I can say that if I carried mine around without a strap for a while it would probably get a bit uncomfortable!
    But anyway, I've never liked Sony colors either. Fuji colors are very nice - I really like Fuji for things other than people (city and landscapes, for example). Their color film is the same way. I do really like the M10 color for everything. The Leica Q color always needed a boost in LR but I think Leica really got it right in the newer M cameras.

    I have too much time on my hands if I’m commenting on these videos, but comparing the photos of the model’s upper body and face, the Sony, and especially the Fuji, look immeasurably better than the Leica. There are unsightly flare lines across the model’s face in both Leica photos that do not appear in either the Sony or Fuji photos. And I have to agree with others who have said the focusing with the Leica seems off. I have the Leica Q (and the Fuji X-H1) and, properly focused, the Leica is much sharper than the photos in this comparison.

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  3 роки тому

      The lens on the Leica Q is very different from the 35mm asph. You can’t assume the quality of one lens based on the performance of another, that doesn’t make any sense.
      Having said that what do you think about the colours and not just the flare?

    • @richarddelasota1812
      @richarddelasota1812 3 роки тому +2

      Sonder Creative They might be different lenses, but the 40 megapixel sensor on the M10-R ought to be at least as sharp as the 24mp lens on the Q if properly focused. The photo we are talking about is a mushy mess marred by a flare line across the model’s face. I guess I just can’t see how any objective viewer could judge the Leica photo better in any sense, color or otherwise, as superior to the photo to which it was being compared. I have the Fuji X-H1 and have shot with several Fuji bodies and lenses. I also have the Q, the M8 and the M240. I love both systems, but if I had shot that photo with either, I would have said, “Ugh,” and deleted it immediately.

    I have the 35 summicron-M and it is quiet sharp. Using it on a SL2 (47Mpx) and M10M (40 Mpx, no bayer filter). Not as sharp as the APO Summicron SL 35, but this lense is in a league of its own ! Anyway, the 35 summicron-M is far sharper than what I can see in your pictures. Challenged by manual focusing by any chance, especially at f2 ?

    • @Sondercreative
      @Sondercreative  2 роки тому

      Unlikely because even in a controlled test with flash and on a tripod the Leica Lens was noticeably softer. Performance was also confirmed to be accurate by Leica too. I received a bunch of messages about it so I referred back to Leica and that confirmed that the results were as expected.
      The new 35mm is said to be much sharper though.
      Thank you for watching :).

  • @TheLDunn1
    @TheLDunn1 3 роки тому +1

    Interesting comparison.
    Firstly, I was surprised that the Fuji looked significantly sharper.....makes me wonder if the standard lower res M10 would be sufficient, seeing the relative lack of sharpness in the M10R, it didn’t look like the lens was out resolving the sensor after all. Park that thought, because I’m in the ‘sharp enough’ camp, so the sharpness doesn’t overly bother me.
    The next thing I found odd, is that on one of the first images you showed, the Leica looked like it had more ‘film like’ hues, the other two looked digital in comparison.....but when I looked at the colour checker card at the end, the Leica colours looked like they had more colour ‘pop’ to me, stronger, bolder, vibrant shades....which kind of is the reverse of what I’d expect considering the ‘film like’ hues I witnessed earlier.
    The other thing I noticed, is the shot outside the white/cream front door, the black clothes looked gray on the Fuji, but black on the Leica.
    The other observation I’ll make though is that for me, shooting raw isn’t just about being able to adjust the white balance in post. It’s also about being able to tweak individual colours in packages like Capture One. So, this got me thinking, that (if I could be bothered), I could take a stills of your colour checker card from say the Leica & from the Sony or Fuji, and then for each colour square, create a custom profile that tweaks the Fuji/Sony closer to the Leica....if that was your strong preference, and you could set C1 up to apply that to your Sony/Fuji Raw’s to mimic the results of the Leica colours while still getting the other advantages.
    The other thing that I would have tried is getting an adapter to put the Leica lens on the Sony too, to see if it produced that pleasing bokeh on the Sony too.....that may have been an interesting experiment to remove any lens effects from the comparison, although, the Leica lens may render slightly differently on the Sony due to the Sony sensors filters.

    Like others, I thought there was something off about how much softer you reported the Leica 35mm/2 vs. the other two lenses. Fortunately, I can do a more controlled test, in that I have Fuji's M-mount adaptor, and the following lenses:
    Leica 24/2.8ASPH, 35/2 ASPH (first version) and 50/2.8 Elmarit-M. All three are turn of the Millenium designs, and all are at least 18 years old (I bought the 24 and 35 new back when they were affordable, the 50 I bought used). Your 35/2 is probably the current version, so should be sharper.
    Fuji 23/2, 35/1.4 and 50/2, all of which I bought new and I don't abuse or drop my lenses.
    I put my X-E3 on a tripod, with the legs at their shortest, and shot the same subject, all on manual focus, with a 2 second timer to eliminate camera shake. For the Fuji's, I used the "back-focus" AF-L button to lock on, for the Leicas, I used focus assist, with maximum magnification. I still zoomed in on focus assist of the Fujis to confirm, but the AF is really accurate, so I didn't fee l the need to adjust. I shot the Leicas all wide open, and the Fujis all wide open and again at 1 stop down to match the Leica lenses.
    I did not move the camera to change the angle of view to match subject magnification between shots, so I really can't compare all the lenses to see which is the absolute best.
    My Leica camera is an M6TTL (also bought long ago when they were more affordable), so there's no easy way to compare Leica camera vs. Fuji camera. I'll happily do the same test with an M10R, a 50/2 ASPH, and the rest of the latest Leica lenses, but first I need to win the lottery...
    Here are my results, comparing same focal lengths:
    23mm Fuji easily beats the 24mm Leica, at f/2 and 2.8, but "focus assist' on a shorter focal length is difficult. I may re-test. The Leica 24/2.8 lens was discontinued 10 years ago for the 24/3.4, so maybe it's just not that sharp of a design after all.
    35mm Fuji and Leica are about tied.
    50mm Fuji is a little bit better than the Leica (at f/2 and 2.8), but the Fuji isn't actually 50mm. I've also tested the Fuji 50/2 vs. two Canon FD lenses, and the Fuji is clearly a 45mm focal length (or thereabouts) lens. I wonder if the 50/1 is also "short"? The 50/2.8 Elmarit-M isn't the sharpest Leica 50mm made in the past 30 years by a long shot, but it's a very pleasing lens. I have a CV 50/1.5, but wanted to test only Leica vs. Fuji.
    I also looked at the 23mm Fuji vs. the 35mm Leica, but on the same sensor, so not the same angle of view. They're about equal, I don't see a huge advantage to either. If I zoom in the Fuji to match the Leica, it doesn't look as good, but that's not a fair comparison.
    Overall, the 3 Fuji's are pretty sharp, no one really stands out heads and shoulders above (or below) the others, and only the 24mm Leica isn't so sharp. I'll let people with more controlled testing environments determine the absolute sharpest of the lot, but none of the 6 lenses I tested would qualify as "soft." My Leica 90/2 from 1960 (which has seen a pretty hard life from its previous owners), now that's a soft lens! Downright "dreamy"!
    Did you use the rangefinder to focus the Leica on the color checker, or live view? Do you have access to a Visoflex to get the most accurate live view test? If you used the rangefinder, did you use a magnifier? Your rangefinder, even if the camera is brand new, might be out of alignment. If you wanted to re-test, see if your local Leica store can loan you an optical magnifier and/or a Visoflex for the M10R.

    I have not used 35 summicron, but the much cheaper Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 (M-mount) is sharper than Leica, even at f/2.8. Summilux 35 would be a better choice for those who love 35mm focal. As the first lens, Summicron 28 is best overall (& it goes perfectly with M10 Framelines), & 50 APO-summicron as the 2nd lens, though a 1.4x VF Magnifier is recommended, to be used with a 50mm lens. I can tell from personal experience of using my 50 summilux + M10P (white). APO-Summicron 90 would be the best as a 3rd lens. For a Press photog, 28-50-90 as a 3 lens set-up shall be ideal.
    I had ordered a 1.4 magnifier last month, and it will be arriving soon.

I've never understood that with reviewers. 99% of images are going to be worked on in post and if you answer you don't want to spend too much time in post then you should do something else other than photography. @@Sondercreative @Sonder Creative Fuji colors when raw post processed are hard to nail. I gave up a long time ago and worked out my colors the way I want them in camera. After that was really ironed out in my xt1 I sold off all of my Nikon equipment and then I just bought into the xpro 3 system. So far so good but I had to tweak the color profiles in camera because of the difference in sensor. I've used a digital Leica before and though I do appreciate the simplicity, I can't get on board with their colors. Perhaps with more time I would get them to edit to my liking but I really enjoy all of the time I save not at the computer these days lol. I'm all about the rangefinder experience and I enjoy their film bodies much more and their glass is excellent if not overpriced and largely unnecessarily good for 35mm film. The reason the Leica colours are more accurate compared to the Fuji is because you've chosen Astia, which a highly stylized color profile. In particular, Astia thens to skew varmer tones even more warm, sa faces and brow hair can skew towards orange. If you selected Provia, ProNeg Standard or ProNeg High you'd get far more natural results on the Fuji. So the comparison doesn't make that much sense
    I have to say I agree that the Leica looks really good though. I think I'd really like a rangefinder camera, but I even if I could afford something that expensive, I don't think I'd be comfortable walking around with something so expensive in my hand.

      I tried the other profiles before settling on Astia and the other profiles actually performed worse in comparison. Astia did the best job but it just wasn’t quite as good in comparison.

    I’ve owned both the 23mm f2 Fuji and the 35mm f2 summicron, and my impression on sharpness is the opposite. I think maybe the reason the Fuji seems sharper to you is that your comparing a 24mp sensor at 100% to a 40mp sensor at 100%. Maybe it would be more accurate to compare with the Leica at 50%.

      A 35mm summicron asph can beat the pants off a Fuji or Sony lens for sharpness. The rangefinder on your M-10R may be out of calibration and/or your technique may be lacking. (As stated previously, trying resting the camera on the palm of your hand for a start). Also bear in mind that 40MP will capture a lot more camera shake so you need take more care. Maybe re-test all three cameras on tripods before coming to conclusions about which lens is sharper. (And do consider sending the Leica M body back to Leica for re-calibration. All those comparisons show to me is that the Leica lenses show lens flare real bad.
    Leica colour here is more muted than the fuji as its got less colour depth, the point of the Sony and Fuji is primarily about capturing detail, colours can be adjusted later. Leica has spent a great deal of time getting their picture profiles just right whilst ignoring the massive gains in sensor technology.
    Basically, photoshopped images from modern cameras like the A7Riii/A9ii with Zeiss lens, will blow the Leica away every time as you have that better colour depth, ( a few bits higher), better ISO performance and so on.

    Comparing a Leica M to a Sony A7 or a Fuji XT makes no sens. It's like comparing a 70's luxury car with a Tesla. I had many Leica M and R, a Sony A850 and A7RIII and currently a Fuji XT2 and X-S10. And frankly speaking, the most enjoyable to shoot with was the Leica M ; and the worst was the Sony. Leica M is a more contemplative, more calming and zen way to shoot.
    A M camera is demanding, but in return, it is very generous. To the point that I'm looking for a used M10r !
    However, a M has to be earned. If you want a "fast-food photo experience", keep walking.

    For the color checker part , If you talk about vibrant color on Leica , It has no relation with “having better color than Fuji “ . I can find too many people saying that these colors on Leica are too vibrant or fake.
    Also Fujifilm film simulations selections affect a lot when it comes to reds ,greens and blues. You can use X Raw Studio and tweak your film simulation and get amazing film look results easily which you can not do it on any Leica camera. You can get 16 bit Tiff file in camera.
    I agree with you about models photos . I really liked the Leica colors on that. I prefer it over Fuji ones. However once you learn how to tweak Film Simulations in camera , it will give you advantage over any camera system.

    This is annoying--and it may not be Sonder's fault, it may be that I am frustrated that so many refuse to apply a Sony color profile to Sony work and then complain. Or worse, offer it for a like on like comparison. So I will launch with my opinion.
    It isn't news that Leica makes a phenomenal machine and part of that IS magic, nor is it news that Sony looks flat in Adobe products. Set up your own color profile for Sony or use Capture One Sony. The full C1 has Sony included. Leica has little on Sony in terms of color, they are simply different. I am not familiar enough with Fuji to make a statement.
    One does have to set up a color profile to work with Sony in Photoshop. Capture One has a profile included. This is a pro tip: stop trying to put goofy color profiles on Sony and claiming they represent Sony's color. Also, if a person likes Leica's color profile and doesn't have $15k to put into a body and lens, they can use Capture one with their camera and change the base characteristics to one of the many Leica color profiles.
    I know you are quite familiar with color profiles and my version of changing to the profile one prefers is the fast and dirty way. For the 10 people in the world who could tell the difference in the final products, the Leica could be worth the price. I would buy it for the lenses.
    I love Sony and Leica colors. Other than Phase One and Hasselblad (which of course, are medium format), they are my favorites.
    Fuji is nice as well. I am not a fan of Nikon's "bluer" look, but it has bazillions of fans. (I switched from Minolta/Sony to Nikon and back to Sony when the mirrorless hit. I just needed an excuse to move back.) Canon's warmer profile is great.

    Leica's need to be held like a camera - cradle with the left (let the camera body rest in your palm) and use your right hand for camera controls. The other two are held like gadgets - tv remotes etc by pinching them with your right hand. Once you 'get' how a leica M handles, they are ergonomic perfection. Some of the samples are back focussed (hair sharp, eyes soft). Shooting JPEG instead of raw probably explains a bit as well. €3800 for the 35mm F2 summicron and even Fujifilm is sharper. Hence why I changed my mind on buying Leica. Imagine dumping €5k on the summilux to get mush at 1.4. But the look but the look. Eh no thanks. Also i wouldn’t have to send my Fujifilm for rangefinder alignment and have to wait 3-6 months for Leica and their useless turnaround service

      Those are perfectly reasonable reasons to not want a Leica. I on the other hand, really want the Leica camera even though I really enjoy my Sony and Fuji systems.

    Fuji is the only "digital" brand that gets close to Leica. Sony has no chance in this regard. Image rendering and colours are catastrophic with Sony.

  • @brunopelvillain9700

    Yes, there's something very special about Leica: the ridiculous price. It is just a matter of "do you see me with this incredible expensive object?", not a matter of photography.

      @@Sondercreative I understand if you say the Leica brand itself is luxury. Every luxury brand offers something clear. It’s not just an empty price tag. But then when you say “there’s something about it” but can never objectively define it.. then it doesn’t even earn the luxury free pass. Sony and Fuji are using the cutting edge tech in sensors and autofocus. Eye auto focus isn’t “all that crap”. Pattern recognition and AI are results of years of research and hard work. I am pretty sure that Sony, Fuji, Canon and Nikon are years ahead in tech than Leica right now.

      I'm not saying Leica stuff is worth the money. But if you take good care of your stuff it will hold its value pretty good. My M9 and 50mm Noctilux are going up in price every year. My Canon and Sony gear depreciates like there's no tomorrow.

      I actually think it was helpful in a way as it it clearly shows the difficulty to get shots in focus when you are not used to a rangefinder. Summicrons suffer from flare, that a known issue. But still it looks soft, so maybe camera shake involved, too.
