Explanation for the part at 8:59 - Muhammad Ali did a few bug spray commercials, starred in a Broadway play, and did a publicity thing where he fought a Japanese wrestler. Not sure about the other 2 events but the Broadway play was during a period of time when he'd been stripped of his title and banned from fighting because he refused to go to Vietnam when he was drafted.
thanks for the info!
(and Ali was close to MLK and the pacifist movement, hence his objection to the war)
Also in the 1980s early 90s Jordon, Bird, Johnson and others done McDs commercials where they would try and make ridiculous shots. And it was in this style. Here is one: ua-cam.com/video/_oACRt-Qp-s/v-deo.html
I am super grateful for your short intros. We don't need a 5 min update before every 4 minute video like some reactors. Keep it up and thanks!
glad you enjoyed it!
Liston was the opponent he'd knocked down in the iconic photo turned into a poster with the pose he makes as he says that line. Jordan's like about bug spray etc was in reference to endorsements Ali took (Deet, iirc), and the line about the japanese dude was in reference to an exhibition match Ali took for money in Japan. Seem to recall Ali mandated no kicking unless on the ground so the guy just basically took a knee and kept kicking Ali's legs till he went down and ended up basically sitting on him.
Love your reactions :). Muhammad Ali made a roach commercial in 1979. Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki, a Japanese professional wrestler had a fight at the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo, Japan, June 26, 1976
thank you and thanks for the info!
Multiple commercials.
You are the first reactor (and I've watched a whole slew of them) who got the Fresh Prince line, thank you!
So for the Liston one. It is in reference to another boxer Sonny Liston. If you ever google Muhammad Ali, the very 1st thing you will see of him besides some head shots, is a photo of him standing over a boxer laying on the canvas, with Ali standing over top of him, his arm crossed in front of his body looking down at him. The guy on the ground is Liston, and it is 1 of the most famous photos in sports history.... and if you notice in the rap, Ali makes the arm motion at the same time as making the comment.
I've said it once, I'll say it again. This whole battle comes down to how you feel about how good is space jam.
I mean the film itself is not good but it's one of those things that are so bad it's good?
It’s a good movie
"You stay at the Ritz 'cause you sold out to crackers" is such an underappreciated line, though.
There was a famous exhibition match to see if boxers (stand-up game) or wrestlers (ground game) were better. The fight was against Antonio Inoki in the 70s. Seems like it would have been one of, if not the first attempt at a MMA style fight.
Due to Ali registering as a conscientious objector to the war in Vietnam, and refusal to accept his draft notice ("I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong"), he was stripped of his Boxing title as well as license, so he was effectively unable to work for a couple of years. To make money, he ended up writing a book, doing college speaking tours, and I believe had to do ads/commercials to survive.
Just to add to what other people had said regarding Michael Jordan's last lines, this is also an call back to a commercial he did for McDonald's where he and Larry Bird would compete on getting a basket, hitting nothing but net. Like, through the window, over the rafters hit nothing but net. Then you see it happen. Those commercials were funny back in the day.
Cassius Clay (before taking the name Ali) shocked the boxing world by beating Sonny Liston, considered ‘unbeatable’ leading into the fight. The famous pic of Ali standing over a fighter post-knockdown is against Liston
The ugly sneaker bar is reference to Jordan's tradition of wearing his favorite pair of beaten up sneakers to important games.
As for liston, just Google liston and ali and the first images should be a picture of ali standing over liston who's laying on his ass after being knocked out
Ali's refusals to be drafted into the Vietnam War is one of the biggest historical events that changed the course of the support of that war. He gave up his title, millions of $ on his principles. If he did go he wouldn't have been on the frontlines. He would have been more like an ambassador. He refused. It was bold, brave and a major part of his legacy.
Brave?
No, he was just an agent of subversion for the USSR. That's why he even had a boxing career (a rigged one) to begin with. He was just living propaganda, a mediocre fighter, and a traitor of course.
@@ruthmcfadden744 A lot of people says brave because just about everyone disliked the Vietnam War. And Ali loathed White People, and hates the U.S. Government. But I think after time he calmed down after awhile
thanks for the info! I did not know that!
@@ruthmcfadden744 The man stood by his convictions, and paid the price for doing so. He gave up money, his title, was barred from his sport during the prime of his athletic years, and faced the scorn of the public, all to do as his conscience dictated.
He had the sheer guts to tell the American public "Ain't no Vietnamese ever called me [the N-word.]"
This is one of my favorites as the huge sports fan that I am, I loved it. Plus they got Key & Peele oh I it was comedic gold.
😂😂! I just love your content and reactions make me smile and laugh every time i watch it
"Un-alive?" George Carlin would have a field day with your euphemisms...😂
I see a lot of youtubers say things like that. Are there some words that youtube bans? I'm not sure why I hear it so often on youtube if it's not banned unless it's just a generational thing younger people say now.
@@MrSurabane Sadly yes for some they do but they still let youtubers who act like never grown up bullies win a million or few. =)
lol
You caught a LOT of bars this time Britt.
haha i try
You should react to Michael Jordans under rated years as a Wizard
I will keep it in mind, thanks!
Never fails.
10% of reactors: "What a great battle these two had."
The other 90% "Space Jam did NOT suck!" It isn't a great movie, I'm sorry, but for us who grew up with the first one, it is wonderfully nostalgic.
The original space jam didn't do well in theaters, but not because it was bad. That year was stacked with competition at the box office and it just couldn't perform to expectations. Everyone I know bought it on VHS though.
Great reaction! Yeah we can’t have that Jordan, Kobe ,Lebron debate in here
The George Foreman grill is still on the market and still in demand. In fact, it has been through quite a few advancements since its conception. I had the original model 20 years ago.
We have to acknowledge Ali’s stand against the Vietnam draft. One of the first times an athlete stood against a social norm publicly to combat a government inequity. If you don’t know, learn about this contribution to the civil rights movement.
I will stand with Britt on that Foreman Grill step. Shit was essential, adaptive, and cheap. You got any imagination?!?!?! Then you can make dreams on a Foreman.
cassius refused to go to vietnam.
if memory serves me right he said something in the lines of "i'm not going over there to [verb that triggers goggle and would get this autodeleted, but you know from the context what verb this is] people who have not done anything to me". they took his boxing title and tried to make his life miserable, but he still didnt go.
also it has been mathematically demonstrated that jordan is the goat.
my hope is that eventually someone even better will show up....but whomever that player is, he still hasnt made it to the nba.
here's the video that concisely and irrefutably demonstrates it. numbers dont lie.
the video lasts half an hour, but it;s worth it:
ua-cam.com/video/tl3mR6eoEa8/v-deo.html
As someone who has home videotapes singing and dancing to I believe I can fly, I can say the memories are in my heart, but the movie isn't good, is just nostalgia.
Great reaction! & you look fabulous like always 🥰
I still have a Foreman grill in my house. Love grilled cheese sandwiches on it.
love that! i used to love mine!
@@brittreacts Actually I think my late cousin years before she passed. It’s definitely one of those things I could never part with.
It’s supposed to be mean that’s what a rap battle is.
She put Kobe up w Lebron and MJ. Cute! :)
I'm a 35yr old from Sweden and yes, Space Jam is a cult classic! It's so great that I don't even need the sequel, I'm pretending it doesn't exist.
I still use the biggest George Foreman grill alongside the air fryer
I Am Sure There Will Be People That Will Think Just Cause I Took a Class Doesn't Mean What I Learned In That Class About What Is Good Or Bad Film Making is Accurate. That Being Said Based On Everything I Learned In My Film Classes Space Jam is a Bad Movie Objectively as Much as I Love It, So I Had to Give it to Muhammad Ali For Some Very Specific Lines, But Especially For Ending On the Space Jam One. Sorry Other Space Jam Fans
Honestly I have to agree the line about Space Jam as a 90s kid I've watched it and I just don't understand why people like it so much
"Space Jam shaped the millennial generation." Well... now maybe we are getting to the root of what is wrong with millennials 🤭 Sonny Liston was who Cassius Clay beat to become champ and is considered one of the greatest moments in 20th century sports
I quite like Spacejam And it has a kickass Soundtrack. The colabs on it are really awesome imho.
Yes the grills are still sold I actually bought a new one last month as my old one packed in 😅
I had the George Foreman grill and it was awesome. We only stopped using it because it would have killed our birds if it overheated and it wouldn’t be worth it but we used it all the time prior
"His mama named him Clay, Im gonna call him Clay."
Cassius Clay became a Muslim, and declared himself a conscientious objector to Vietnam and refused to go.
thanks for the info! I did not know that!
One thing I don’t see acknowledged here about Sonny Liston is that the Ali KO made him heavyweight champion. The fight had generational conflict that fit the cultural shift from the conformist 50s to the revolutionary 60s.
Great reaction 👏👏
"That man's children's children's children's children"...you mean George Jr, Jr, Jr, Jr?
Sonny Liston was the boxing champion until Mohammed Ali took his title.
Yes,Cassius Clay AKA Muhammad Ali is from Louisville, Kentucky like me Richard Foster
that is so cool!
I still use the George Foreman grill haha
go back and watch the first space jam. It is one long commercial with a product placement like very 10 sec.
"idk anything about this battle or the people that made it but I like Michael Jordan and Space Jam!".. rough..
You don't need to make that debate with us Brit as last week a poll was done between players and Jordan came out on top as the GOAT.
😂😂 the space jam line is a great way to end it because it always triggers a reaction
The Bug Spray Commercial - ua-cam.com/video/P4tJo0K2l1Q/v-deo.html
Sonny LIston, the fighter.
I didnt grew up with space jam so there’s no noatalgia for me. And I ”tried” to watch it a few years ago when I was like 17-18, and it was soooo shit, but its meant for kids so cant complain to much. But I feel like the people who are super fans of space jam mostly like it because of nostalgia.
Walmart sells Gearge ForemaGrill they still sell pretty good
that is awesome!
Ali fought a Japanese wrestling star.
LOL. If you're looking for 'nice', ERB probably isn't the thing for you.
You should probably avoid their Bruce Lee vs Clint Eastwood. It's the most vicious one they ever did.
haha i will keep that in mind!
There was a 2nd Space Jam?
One man became a "hero" for fighting in a squared circle when: The Vietnam Conflict Extract Data File of the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) Extract Files contains records of 58,220 U.S. military fatal casualties of the Vietnam War. Didn't.......
I have no clue either about either of those men, I just needed something fun before bed...=) Not that daily negative news or other negative crap here on the WWW.
hope you enjoyed it!
The answer is simple, Larry Bird! And Ali beat Sonny Liston to gain the heavyweight crown and he beat him bad. He beat him like a red headed step child.
And yes , they still sell George Foreman grill...
haha
Ms Britt, these are all about the slagging and believe me in some of them it's a lot worse. I would suggest avoiding Ragnar versus Richard the third or Thor versus Zeus, because they not only get personal, they get nasty!
haha i will keep that in mind, thanks!
Got 2 forman grill's lol
love that lol!
the line against Space Jam never sat well with me, i love Space Jam and if i had kids, i'd have them watch it too, absolute low blow on a fictitious level.
Honestly I fight back on forth on who really wins, but all I know is Ali lost me on Space Jam and for that I have MJ
ESPN=Expert Sports People Not
I think Muhammad's entire final verse was sort of a throw, especially when compared to Jordan's. But it equals out cuz Muhammad was in the lead the entire fight imo.
1979 Muhammad Ali D- Con commercial. ua-cam.com/video/P4tJo0K2l1Q/v-deo.html
His name was Cassius Clay (also known as 'The Louisville Lip', yep he was from Kentucky) before converting to Islam and being granted the name Muhammed Ali. He was already anti-war and when he was taken before the draft board, they called the name Cassius Clay to be inducted into the Army. He obviously refused to be recognized by this name, and that along with his anti-war politics got him arrested and stripped of his boxing title. Finally the Supreme Court overturned his conviction for draft dodging, but it took away his prime years for his career. Ali's is a really fascinating story, and he was a man I admired tremendously. You should check out Will Smith's portrayal of him in the movie "Ali".
thanks for the info!
Well Mohammed Ali was pretty. That's fact
haha ur not wrong
Space Jam did suck tho 😂😂😂
Jordan beat Lebeon in the Space Jam battle
I’m glad Ali dissed Space Jam 😂
I hate that film
Big dumb goblin space jam reference
SpaceJam is only good cause of nostalgia, objectively. If you like it, great, glad you do. But it’s a disjointed mess. And why is it called SpaceJam when there’s no space relation. Don’t the bad guys come from inside the earth?
Anyone over the age of 14 when Space Jam come out will agree its a HORRIBLE Movie.
We as mellinials need to admit that though space jam was a nostalgic film for us, it was still terrible.
Is it still blackface if the actor that's doing it is black? 🤔
There is also a difference between a judicious use of makeup to enhance the physical resemblance of the actor to the person they are portraying and putting on a ton of makeup to become a characiture persona.
I think this video falls in the first category. Both actors are portraying real people, and attempting to do it fairly faithfully in a rap battle format. If one, or both, came out as a goofy parody, then the makeup used could be seen as part of the problem.
ERB wouldn't be so Epic if they didn't go the extra length with their costumes and makup.
I love space jam, but objectively it is really a bad movie.
Space Jam was terrible
Damn, never seen someone defend child sweatshops before.
