This is where it all started, I went back to see how things have changed and how much this channel has grown. Hands down one of the best foraging/ fishing/ adventuring/ catch and cook up channels around. I wish you the best of luck!
My Okinawan Grandfather would collect them at low tide and my Grandmother would crack them open, rinse in saltwater and feed us on shore. So sweet, so delish... the best memories!
Going all the way back to the first episode. Love seeing how this channel has grown, but also how its stuck so close to its roots. I cant wait to see what another 3 years has in store
The best way to eat those sea urchins is raw, straight from the sea. Here in New Zealand us Māori love eating those! My favourite seafood, your ones looked delicious!
“Knife is Life” This is the video that got me hooked. I remember after watching this I took the family to the tide pools in San Pedro (SoCal) and we found some Uni and mussels! Now we are always going! Thanks for the inspiration man!
Thankful that I stumbled onto your channel(subscribed). Going through a rough patch in my life and vowed that I am going to start going out again and camping. I live in So Cal so never really visited Nor Cal except for the one time trip to San Fran and the Sierras. I love your videos and now Mendocino is on my list. Very interesting this camping on the beach. So beautiful.
Used to go on these big camping trips with some friends up there. We'd dive for abalone (back when there was still enough of them and kelp beds were healthy), spearfish and harvest shellfish and urchins. Best camping cookouts. Thanks for the vids, takes me back!
That looked delicious! Would be worth a vacation just to camp there and stuff myself on fresh uni. Funny, I was almost turned off of them, the first time I tried them they weren't so fresh. But then a sushi chef I befriended had me try some fresh ones... well, that's the kind of taste that makes your eyes roll in the back of your head. Cool vid.
To me, the reason for backpacking, is to enjoy myself. I always took what I needed, to enjoy myself. But, I usually went on 10 - 14 day trips; ranging from ocean to desert; but usually in the mountains of the High Sierra. On a long, 17 trip; in the Sierras, with a group; I carried up to 4 lbs of medical gear; I was an advanced EMT, and worked every day, for years, in a busy E.R. I think I used every item in that kit, at least once. (I did a lot of suturing, and other advanced procedures.) And, of course, I "had" to have 3, or so, lbs.of fishing gear. My 3 or 4 lbs. of photo gear (pre- digital) provided 20 years of beautiful slides, which still brighten my evenings, now that I'm older. I carried "extra gear, on every trip. I found that those "extras" provided value, that was worth the extra weight. However, I was strong, healthy, and willing to carry the weight. I used this "system" to backpack, around a thousand miles, in the wildest parts of the High Sierra (check out Tehiite Valley and the Ionian Basin). Along with the "essentials", I carried 65 lbs. or so; except for a 17 day trip, into the highest, wildest areas, when I started with 96 lbs. I wasn't very fast; but, when that pack came off, I was happy to relax with all the things that made me safe, and comfortable. Don't be afraid to carry some comforts with you. Just, be aware that you'll be a little more tired, and won't cover as much ground. But, if you're not in a race, or weight-carrying-contest; don't be afraid to carry what will make you happy. THAT'S the real reason for backpacking! However, be aware of your companions' wants and needs. They matter, too.
Hey just saw your video. I had to subscribe. I used to live for a little bit in Oregon. Keep these videos coming. I am in Maryland and I have got to get back out there.
Nice video and what a great environment, those sea urchins are many times bigger than the our green "shore" urchins here in the UK,it would not be worth the effort to try and find the minimal amount of roe.I didn't know your urchins made a hole to live in. There must be many types food to forage at that location. Urchin roe is a great delicacy in Mediterranean countries. It was a shame your gas ran out, thanks for posting and well done, I've subscribed, kind regards Craig
Hi Craig, thank you for watching my video! Really appreciate it, since I’m a big fan of your videos!! Yeah those purple urchins literally burrow themselves into the rocks. I’ll be making more videos foraging different things in our environment. Thanks for subscribing!
Knife is life! Choosing this video because I think this is the first one I ever saw! Dont know exactly how I came across your channel but so glad I did! ✨✨
Loving your videos! Never tried Uni/sea urchin but I have to one day! Im not too much of a fan of shellfish, but I love fish! I wish my tastebuds didn't betray me lol. Even though you didn't get rice, you still had beer, uni and seaweed/nori!
I was watching a TV special on harvesting purple sea urchins off Santa Catalina Island. They pack up and sell the Uni to Japanese markets and are making a fortune doing it. I watched you open the Uni with you knife. The guy in the TV special had a really unique tool to crack op-en the Uni. It looked like a pair of pliers but instead of a vice point it had two flat plates that came together when squeezed. After you squeezed it you used it like a hammer and just busted into the Uni. Once in you released the handles and the spring blades split open the Uni. Using this tool he was able to get a nice clean cut into the Uni and split them open. No spikes in your fingers and the egg sacks were undamaged. Look into it. I do not know what the tool is called but it worked great. CB
Adam and Fisherman's Life (Matt?) both recommended you so here I am! Looking forward to your cooking adventures from start to finish. 1st, hope you made up yourself a cooking pouch with things like a cutting board, knife, spices, SALT and such things that you always have with you :)
"knife is life" Great informative videos, great content keep up the good work............... Ok I think that's all your videos I hope that's worth the hour of my life spent lol! I'm going to throw you a freebie t-shirt idea, I had a lot of time to think of one while I was commenting on every single one of your videos............. (Idea) "Sharp Knives Matter" that's a freebie!
“knife is life” I really wanna win a gyuto knife haha. But hey, I actually made it to your first vid! It’s crazy to see how far you’ve come! You’re channel is my favorite subscription and I can’t wait to see you hit 1MIL soon!!
Yeah Mendocino!, that’s my second home chef!, I go big on kayak fishing and mushroom foraging over there. I ab dive but not last year, do you hit up the mushrooms?, I can put you on some of you don’t?. Enjoy the videos!.
Awesome - you should come to Minnesota next summer to boundary waters with us for 3-4 days of canoe, fishing & outdoor wilderness cooking. We would love to host you! Will cover your expenses. LMK
Wow! nice video. I am wondering....how do you know what areas to look for Uni? I live in Korea, and coastal foraging is very common here. I would like to start doing it myself. But I have no idea exactly where to look. Is it usually just in a rocky area at low tide? Breakfast looked amazing too! Nice video, man. I am a new subscriber.
Hi there, new subscriber to your channel. Is there a certain time of year that the roe are biggest? I went out and harvested some myself and found almost no row in 15+ urchins. Could it be because most were just barely over the limit size?
How do you know that water is safe to drink, since you’re washing your food in it ?.Also do you ever get sick, it doesn’t seem very sanitary. Would like to try it but want to be safe lol
Amazing content! I love your videos because they’re very informational and not over-edited. May I ask where in Mendocino this was?? I’ve attempted to forage uni without having to dive or snorkel for them, but always fail. Where did you map yourself to on your phone?? -> where did you walk to from your campsite?? -> where was your campsite?? A reply would be much appreciated so I can help knock out these invasive species too 🤣 Thank you!! Subscribed 👍🏽
This was at van damme beach in mendocino. Anywhere in mendocino is really good. But at this spot, it has to be super low tide. around -1.0ft or lower. That's the only trick really, to go at the right time!
question: are all kinds of sea urchin edible? Or are there toxic ones? I never came across these. But harvesting looks like fun! Don't wanna risk it being a total dumb beginner tho :D
This is where it all started, I went back to see how things have changed and how much this channel has grown. Hands down one of the best foraging/ fishing/ adventuring/ catch and cook up channels around. I wish you the best of luck!
Here another year later! It’s amazing to see

Not sure how I got here, but glad I have arrived. What a great channel, can't wait to see what else you have in store! Thanks for sharing.
The best way to eat those sea urchins is raw, straight from the sea. Here in New Zealand us Māori love eating those! My favourite seafood, your ones looked delicious!
Definitely raw urchin is best! I hope to forage in New Zealand one day!! Are there any strict laws about harvesting sea life there?
There are limits to every shellfish and size limits on others. Just take enough for a feed and leave some for next time.
Weka Digital Media NZ sounds good, Thanks!
❤️ Māori!
Yessssssss
Man it's like being back home in NZ and being able to eat straight out of the ocean! So awesome thank you!!

Yeah Mendocino!, that’s my second home chef!, I go big on kayak fishing and mushroom foraging over there. I ab dive but not last year, do you hit up the mushrooms?, I can put you on some of you don’t?. Enjoy the videos!.
Do these qualify as California gold? Also, do you season the rice with traditional sushi vinegar/sugar?
Awesome - you should come to Minnesota next summer to boundary waters with us for 3-4 days of canoe, fishing & outdoor wilderness cooking. We would love to host you! Will cover your expenses. LMK
I would really like to harvest some uni, this looks like a great spot. Do you happen to remember the general area in mendocino where you were?
Hi! Where in Mendocino did you go? We are planning to go next week and would love to forage some! Thanks for the awesome video.
I know so little about the ocean. I really enjoy these videos. The beach just isn’t something I see quite like that here in Oklahoma
4:10 Anthony Bourdain would have loved getting in on that uni
Where along the Mendocino coast did you go to?
My siblings and I call uni 'sea butter'
Wow!
Yup! Rocky areas during low tide
Is that the little beach just N of Little River Inn? Those buses were there 2 yrs ago when I stayed there. I WILL be doing this soon!
grew up eating those, so good.
Where it all began
Hi there, new subscriber to your channel. Is there a certain time of year that the roe are biggest? I went out and harvested some myself and found almost no row in 15+ urchins. Could it be because most were just barely over the limit size?
Hahaha, its okay if there's no rice...you got some nori, makes a perfect compliment with the uni...yummmm
true that, man!
Knife for life, uni for days!! 😋🍣
9:15 would off been a cool thumbnail. Great vids though, keep up the good work.
I have liked all of your vids so far, ocean, shrooms, plants.......you need a microphone with a wind sock thanks
Happy dawg. Taku and Jocelyn before the campstove upgrades.

5:50

Then grunting sounds
"Ughh"

"Damnn"
"U want help? like can I get in there with the knife too?"
where did you get the small wooden spatula
How do you know that water is safe to drink, since you’re washing your food in it ?.Also do you ever get sick, it doesn’t seem very sanitary. Would like to try it but want to be safe lol
When Taku didn’t have his Lofi beat music...
