- Guitarist @JulianLageofficial first visited the KNKX studios in 2011, just after the release of his second album, Gladwell. Eleven years and twelve albums later, Lage returned for a solo session performance that showcased his prodigious talent and a mature artist at the top of his game.
The last three albums from Lage and his trio with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, span the time just before the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent return to concerts without masks. Love Hurts showed a trio getting to know each other, Squint found a trio struggling to create through health restrictions. The brand-new album View with a Room, their sophomore effort for Blue Note Records, comes from a well-honed unit. It also adds a very special guest.

That’s with every great artist. Pat Martino , Wes Montgomery etc… all of them are truly one of a kind.
The casual 'hmm what incredible thing shall i do next' chin-scratch at 1:57 made me laugh. Such mastery over the instrument.
The most incredible thing about Julian is that on the contrary of other guitarists, we can see that he's not focused on the technical aspect of his playing but he's focus on how joyful it is for him to play! And that's maybe why he's so damn good at playing music :)
Like Gene Krupa. And not like Buddy Rich.
I think that's just how it looks... his tone dynamic and feel are technically superb

@@100sky3 You nailed it. He mastered not only technique at an early age, but also theory. So much so that's it's completely organic to him. His solos are not demonstrations of technique, they're spontaneous compositions.

I like his playing immensely more solo. It’s beautiful without the distraction of other instruments. I wish more people would explore how beautiful the electric guitar can be.
His note control and use of dynamics is masterful. Incredible playing as always.

I'm in awe everytime I see him play, love his sound and timing. My fav jazz guitarist. I sometimes wish I had listened more jazz guitarists because I find it such an interesting genre, but I always struggled to stick with others and found it hard to fully get into jazz guitar music. I only enjoyed short burst of jazz. Finding, Julian was a revelation, a lucky find, I can listen to him play and listen again and love it each time, usually more than the last time! Thank you Julian 😊
aaaaa the dynamics, julian has like 10.000 different volume levels, is absurd. So good
It's an otherworldly experience hearing Julian play solo... Here is this generation's Wes Montgomery or Django Reinhardt or Charlie Christian...
ok, he has already become my favorite guitarist ever, it has been a brutal duel this last years, but i just have to accept it. He is the friking Goat in my list because apart from the insane ability i just enjoy his music, i enjoy listening to his albums immensely.
And with all that said, I will say that I miss the tele.

I was trying to timstamp a beautiful area of this, but I didn't, because it didn't make sense to timestamp it, because I couldn't find where the beautiful moment started, nor ended
Everything Julian does is amazing, obviously, but god damn his solo performances are just extra mesmerizing and special.
He's probably my favorite musician these days. His music and playing always takes me on a journey of delight and wonder. Every time I hear him play, there is always something I've not heard before. What an incredible talent. Thanks for blessing us with your music, Julian. Much love.

Julian is one of those rare people who seems completely at ease with everything he does, and one of those rare artists who so completely embodies and embraces his being as a musician that the music becomes him. Literally this just Julian and his guitar letting us in on one hell of a conversation, while still remaining completely accessible to even non- hardcore jazz heads. (Of this generation only Jon Batiste comes to mind as having this gift.)

Dear god, how many thousands of hours he must've put to achieve such a level of proficiency with his guitar.. He is literally ONE with his instrument. Great music. Jazz men are the equivalent of Rally drivers.. So much going on with those fingers -_-
I believe he once said in an interview that between six and twelve years old he practiced six to eight hours a day. And he took lessons for years from accomplished jazz player Randy Vincent and classical lessons from the San Francisco Conservatory. He was a kid who had extraordinary talent, a work habit to match, and very high quality instruction.
@@jeffs7482…..and yet it still brings him the greatest joy just to play. It’s a privilege to be able to watch him. He has redefined guitar for me.

There’s something about Julian’s playing that both makes me want to grab my guitar and start playing immediately and at the same time never play again in my life because it’s pointless. I gasped like 5 times with this version of Auditorium.
When you see greatness and you are not inspired, reframe your mind
@@BorisBidjanSaberi11 Agree. I used to feel like giving up seeing greats like Julian Lage. Now, I just want to practise more. In fact, he really inspires me to apply classical stuff in jazz and I am happy with my progress so far.
@@geogi_bodies I think Julian uses a lot of classical technique in his playing. He certainly uses his thumb over the top from time to time, but he also plays riffs off of bars and half bars a lot. Not to mention his flawless fretting technique.
The beginning reminds me of Jimmy Page playing White Summer at the Royal Albert Hall
