eArcHu Maybe it is because with Sekonic always giving the light-meter so much attention that I start disliking all Sekonic videos. The moment the light-meter is mentioned, I get irritated and with most videos I cannot watch it till the end even though the information is really worth staying for. Sekonic videos are just too "simple aggressive" what maybe in the USA works but being more subtle goes for the rest of the world I guess.
eArcHu no kidding. I just subscribed ! this was SO thoroughly explained and SO useful for pro work (actually making money and being relative quality to others who have much more)
***** I get your dislike of forced product placement, but in this case a light meter really is a useful tool. It allows for consistent and measurable results, and definitely removes a lot of the trial and error associated with setting up a studio shot. Plus they funded the video, so ya know, seems reasonable to me.
+computerjantje This particular video hardly mentions about using a meter even though the part about using one softbox for a large group just by arranging them by light meter reading is genius! I already bought one of their light meters though so perhaps I'm less tuned into any product placement in their videos.
While I agree that light meters are less crucial now than they were in the days of film, I don't agree that they are "dumb" or "useless". They help remove the guesswork of multi-light setups, and are also an awesome tool for maintaining consistency when shooting over a long period of time using ambient light. Jesus, people on here are so damn negative. I'm curious, if you put such a low value on light meters, why are you spending time commenting on videos of light meters? My comment was meant to be positive feedback for something I found helpful.
This is what they teach in colleges, only that it takes 2 weeks and is extremely costly, yet Mr.Tony is doing it for free, in a very comprehensive way. Great work.
I think he meant the techniques, vs equipment. You can easily use a medium/large size window with a curtain as a free softbox, and move your subject around to get the desired effect.
I am learning from you, you taught me "The POWER of ONE SOFT BOX", and this video is absolutely stunning, you are really... .really..... a MASTER of ONE SOFT BOX.......
Important lesson explained in shortest, cleanest way possible. Will be useful to enhance lighting knowledge and application in practical shoots. Thank you.
I have watched this many times and I couldnt believe how good your tutorial is.Besides that, your model,Mr Boromeo, has just recently joined The Voice US. how cool is that! :)
Thank you for this Video Mr Corbell , Your time and efforts are not cheap and I appreciate you taking time from your day to explain each step.Stay safe and stay wellKpA
Fabulous video Tony! Great inspiration. Thank you for passing on your wealth of knowledge. I have always enjoyed watching your classes on Creative Live.
Thank you Tony Corbell -- this was absolutely a GREAT training video. Thanks for taking the time to post this -- you have helped me immensely with lighting!
Excellent!!!! Thank you!! I love the soft box lighting look and do the same, I like the simplicity, and not needing a ton of equipment for beautiful photos.
Thank you so much for this. I've used a couple of these techniques with clients and during the shoot they had doubts, but once they saw the results, they were impressed and happy. This is very valuable information for all beginners and pros as well.
Thanks for the video. I was going to purchase a monolight kit but thanks to this video I've decided to just invest in my speed light and purchase an affordable softbox that was within my budget. I feel this will expand my abilities and give me more control than the umbrella I've been using.
I liked the monster light. I also liked when he used the softbox as the backdrop for the high contrast silhouette profile shot. I call that the Alfred Hitchcock.
Great tutorial, thanks a lot! So I went on and ordered the 100x80 Lumiair as shown in each diagram, but I discovered that it's a smaller size compared to the one used in this tutorial. Sure enough, at 1:13, Tony mentions that he is using the 100 x 140 ( Bowen model number BW-1515), as opposed to the one shown in each diagram which is the 100x80 (BW-1505), Just wanted to point this out in case someone like me orders it and it's surprised at the smaller size.
Just ran across this video. This information is wonderful. I've always leaned more toward available light photography, doing mostly landscape and event photography. I'm trying to get into more portraiture, and this should help me a lot! Thanks for all the great info!
Thank you for this! Lots of great info and really well done. Everything was explained well (Tony is a great teacher), production quality was really good, and you showed the resulting images of each setup. Excellent work all around.
I have subbed just because of this. I have to say, I've done allot of different creative things in my life (including teaching which you are incredible at) and this is absolutely indefinitely stellar work you have amassed.
8 years from this video when made and 30+ years from the shooting of Yamaha motorcycle by Dean Collins and Tony in the studio , I am stuck in the past learning the basics from those masters in this nowadays ocean of so called photography channels that only tells you buy the latest and greatest gear and you will make great photos.
This is some Zack Arias OneLight stuff here. I know it's general knowledge but Tony and Zack are the prime proof that you can do so much with ehrm, one light. :)
This is GOLD! Thank you so much. I was looking at spending over 1000$ on my lighting setup, but after this, I will be starting with just one light and a softbox and practice practice practice. I did not know these results were possible with one light! Subscribed.
Excellent video, I'm surprised there aren't more views or comments.
Wake up, folks, this is treasure here!

Outstanding. I learned more from you in 30 minutes than I have in 10 years!
This is what they teach in colleges, only that it takes 2 weeks and is extremely costly, yet Mr.Tony is doing it for free, in a very comprehensive way.
Great work.
dude this isnt free. bowens and sekonic items are expensive. u pay with ur ass for those. u just havent understood this game yet
Ls Lx Sorry if there's any misunderstanding. What I meant was, in this video, Tony taught us a semester's worth of knowledge in 20 minutes, for free.
You also get to use the schools sweet equipment. That was a plus for me, but you are right.
I think he meant the techniques, vs equipment. You can easily use a medium/large size window with a curtain as a free softbox, and move your subject around to get the desired effect.
A lot of photographers have huge egos that piss me off. Tony is both knowledgable and humble. Thanks a lot!
Lost count how many times I've watched this video. Pure gold for lighting technique
