Been in your position. Started romhacking as a dumb little middle-schooler back in 2011. Now I'm a pixelartist by trade because of my time spent working on Pokémon romhacks. Recently a lot of us in the romhacking scene have cast aside traditional hexadecimal romhacking with the tools you might remember from back then, to a new alternative that streamlines the process of everything 1000x over. This alternative is using the raw decompilations of the roms we know and love. A decompilation is exactly what it sounds like; a rom that has been completely reverse-engineered all the way back to it's source code so you can edit whatever you want, however you want with ease. The documentation isn't fully finished, as there's there's always people working on improving them, but that's the best part! These projects are always improving. If you really want to keep working with the Fire Red rom as your basis that's understandable, but personally I've always been more interested in Pokémon Emerald and as such was thrilled to find out about the Pokémon Emerald Expansion decompilation project, which is basically Emerald but with extras that most people would look to put into a romhack anyways. UA-camr @TeamAquasHideout has a great tutorial about how to use these decompilations as well as the tools you'll need and how to set them up if you're interested. In the long run, I think you'll save yourself a lot of head and heartache were you to take your project and switch to a decomp! While it might to a large degree be personal preference the new games really do not look that good, at least not when compared to what it could have been like if the games were made by an actually competent studio and focused on quality games rather than shitting out something half baked every year.

Ive never played a pokemon rom, or even looked into it. After watching this video that randomly popped onto my home page, i REALLY and i mean REALLY want you to finish this. This video is very precious. A lot of designer and creators do not do post-mortem of their projects, or they do it when the project is a success. You choose to stop the project, explain the whole process, all the phases by which you pass and why you stop ; it's a very precious account in my opinion. Knowing what goes into making a game is really eye opening to what the developers of games go through. Because while personal projects can have no set deadlines, developers can't have that luxury.
The fact games exist at all is astounding.
I was a romhacker a long time ago. Never got super far into anything, and I'm pretty sure I never helped on anything that got published, but man.. This is making me intensely nostalgic and wanting to go back and try to really start something again.
Do it
Thank you for sharing your frustrations with Sappy so eloquently, every GBA romhacker who has ever dealt with music hacking knows the pain
So true!
WOAH. THIS LOOKS AMAZING! Bit heartbroken toward the end when I found out it wasn't downloadable, that's how amazing it looks. Keep up the amazing work! You have so many fans of this looking forward to it!
Take care of yourself and pace yourself safely. Us fans can wait. A rushed game is forever bad, or whatever that one dude said. Props to you.
I started my own recently, when I am feeling down on it or wanting to quit out of frustration I will be returning here for the inspiration to continue, thanks for the video chris.
It really seems like you're on to what will be one of the best Pokemon games we'll ever see. I seriously hope you finish this and can release it to the world for us all to enjoy. Imagine seeing the videos of people trying what you've worked so hard on, walkthrough videos, tips, showing every new feature that we've always wanted GameFreak to put into a game.
I know the dedication to projects like this from a music prospective and its gut wrenching to not finish what you've poured everything into for so long.
I cant wait for this to be completed and released! Thank you in advance for something all of us will cherish and remember.
Keep going!
ETA: “We’ll get there when we get there.”
Ngl, I am very intrigued by your Rom. Just by hearing you talk I can see the passion you’ve put into it. I am excited to see the final project, because I know it’s gonna be better than any other Rom we’ve played for awhile. Godspeed good sir 🫡
How is this video so professionally made? You have a natural talent for being a content creator.
This video deserves much more attention and your will to keep going after all this time and issues is commendable. I'm subscribing to make sure when this game does come out I can be one of the first to play. Never give up.
11:01 "...start up the game and" *Manscaped ad roll starts playing*
The game looks great for gen 3
Looks better than the new games.
@@gustavomartins364 It doesn't WTF is wrong with you.
While it might to a large degree be personal preference the new games really do not look that good, at least not when compared to what it could have been like if the games were made by an actually competent studio and focused on quality games rather than shitting out something half baked every year.
@@hygormotasantos4035 even 'advanced 3d technology' has standards you need to compare to other projects using that technology, and on average, the latest 3d games are pretty basic graphics wise
@@hygormotasantos4035 objectively yes it does look better wdym
This was a delightful recommendation. I love the project, love the editing, and love the passion you put into all of this. Reminds me of when I started making a small “adjustment rom hack” to let my friends try an easy Nuzlocke in Emerald. Didn’t finish that one but now I’m feeling inspired!
I’m sticking around here, like your style man.
If this ever gets out on a physical cartridge I’d love to get one! This is amazing dude! Love all the work you’ve put into it, take care of your hand and take breaks! Health is no joke for artists! Wishing you the best of luck on completing the game. ❤️
the game doesn’t even work and you’re asking for a physical cartridge? lmao
Was thinking the exact same thing
That would be illegal to make into a physical cartridge
@@thunderlordabove420 no, selling it would be illegal. Simply putting it onto physical carts would be legal gray area, just look at Pokemon AshGray (an ROM hack)
@@thunderlordabove420 maybe he could make it a thing you could patch the chip to have the rom on using the original rom
UA-cam definitely felt my want to make a pokemon game from a couple years ago and recommended this. I gave up early because I had ideas and more ideas but was off put by the sheer magnitude of how much you have to do. All I wanted to start was edited voice lines to craft a new story from and edited trainer battles to make the game harder and more interesting. To put 2 years into all these changes dude... You're a legend in my book even if it's not finished. I look forward to playing the finished masterpiece when you do finally finish it.
Ive never played a pokemon rom, or even looked into it. After watching this video that randomly popped onto my home page, i REALLY and i mean REALLY want you to finish this. One of the biggest reasons is acces to all of the pokemon in one game not hidden by special events that are unobtainable, or some other bs gimmick that gamefreak has come up with to roadblock us as players. Thank you!
PS - PLEASE FINISH THIS
You can't make me watch the whole video and then at the end find out you haven't finished haha! I look forward to the finished product when ever that will be, don't rush, taking time away from things is great as you will normally come back with a fresh head to work away! You got this!
Dammit. Now you've got me thinking of trying to make my own.
Lol same. Somehow "I spent 2 years on this and injured myself and also it's broken" got me thinking "hmm... I should try this"
😂 Same here
It doesn’t matter what anybody says to you, you’re a legend already
Good video. Reminder that these games are typically constructed by teams with the backing of a massive support group (i.e. Nintendo) so kudos for taking this on by yourself. Keep the punk rock spirit alive
damn, this is super cool! cant wait to see this once you're done! good luck! you got this!
I have been playing pokemon since gen 3 so this makes me so happy to see the effort and love you are putting in. Can't wait to play this once you finish!
Time spent learning and creating something is never worthless, man. You'll keep at least part of the knowledge you acquired, and remember your past mistakes and how to avoid them. That's not a bad thing at all.
Beautifully said right there. This is how I try to look at everything in my life whenever I start to think it’s a “waste of time”. Great tool to change your perspective when needed!
I've spent the last almost 3 years developing a fangame myself and its honestly been a super fun experience making the game and building a community of people that's enjoyed my work... good luck on your adventure!
What is it called?:)

Wow! This is awesome! A lot of information that I never realized even existed. As an Audio Engineer it is crazy to see how a GBA ROM reads audio information. I can't wait for this to come out! I will enjoy playing it so much!
That's why whenever I progress a decent amount into my project, I always have people test it and look for what breaks. I'm a nobody and I still got a bunch of people for it. As a UA-camr, you could get plenty of people to test it and point out bugs; Me included. I know it may be hard to jump back into this after what happened but I believe in you bro! If you ever need a hand, feel free to ask us!
Bro I've made 2 rom hacks in the past and the amount of broken-game shenanigans I've had to endure was heartbreaking. I feel your pain, man, I trully do. The game itself looks absolutely amazing so congrats on making such a great thing even if it doesn't work yet. Much luck
The game looks great. Hopefully you get everything figured out.
Dude. I totally agree. I'm 32. Haven't played Pokemon in like 10 years. Then after playing Scarlet I went back to Soul Silver.
Bro... you are doing AMAZING. I know theres a lot of roadblocks and stuff, but it looks really good so far! Keep it up!
This video is very precious. A lot of designer and creators do not do post-mortem of their projects, or they do it when the project is a success. You choose to stop the project, explain the whole process, all the phases by which you pass and why you stop ; it's a very precious account in my opinion.
I'm actually writing a dissertation on rom-hacks and the conditions of their creation, so I thank you for this great video who help me a lot for my work !
PS : I'm a french guy so excuse my poor english !
Wow dude I’m really surprised by how much this looks promising please finish it when you feel rested and ready
this video was fantastically well made, i love when content creators put care and love into their projects
I'm not going to lie, just listening to the soundtrack alone gave me the happiness I had when I first played Pokémon Red on the Game Boy! You have my support 110%! I also LOVE the name for this game!
Please don't forget this project!
At this point Kick-Start it with a team. You'll be alright ❤
That might result in copyright issues tho
Lovely art direction. I am excited to see your progress. Gen 3 can looks so good
I really hope you complete this, it looks incredible so far, especially with the details you were talking about adding 🤩
this romhack looks so damn good, can't wait for you to finish it!
This gave me a weird motivation to finish my current college projects xd. I've been thinking of throwing myself into a project like this one you mentioned (not necessarily about pokemon, but modding a game) and this video really gave me the desire to start something my own. Even though the idea of learning about multiple things I know literally nothing of stresses me out already this was great motivation, idk why xd
Thanks :) Please take your time, i'll be happy to try your game when you finish it!
The 1K dislikes are from the Game Freak employees!
Holy shit, I can't believe this is a video from a channel with 100 subs, that was an absolutely fantastic video. Honestly? I'm subbing just to see when your ROM hack actually releases in the future, you got me interested. I've been personally juggling a personal modding project for the past half a year now and dumped god knows how many hours and custom assets on it, this is exactly my kind of vibe. I can't wait to play it!
This video is way too fun and well-edited to be your first video 😄 keep it up!
Keep it going bro. This was so cool to watch and can’t wait to see the end product. Please don’t give up, seeing this inspired fellow coders like myself to keep creating. You got this!
If you ever do this again, do not use sappy or advance map. Use the PokeFireRed disassembly and Porymap. Your corrupted game will thank you.
Dude, you're pretty much an inspiration, like you keep saying you're old but that's literally the mindset I have, and yet you managed to make something that's kinda functional despite lacking a lot of coding knowledge (Like you say it's a failure, but honestly you done a lot considering you started from nothing.), honestly an inspiration!
I'm more excited for this than anything Gamefreak will put out, I can sense the love and passion behind it. Keep going man!
This made me Miss 2D Pokémon so much. Just watching whatever the hell you did on it. This is great, take a long break and then finish this eventually. You worked so hard and that’s amazing inspiration.
Yeah but I wanna see some good 3d hacks soon
"This shit is going SMOOTH my brother in arms" fucking got me. Keep ya chin up King, this looks so good and you should be proud. When you finish this I will definitely stream this and share with all my fellow nuzlockers.
This is a great video man, I love this.
As a long time ROM hacker of both Sonic and Pokemon (over a decade), I know nearly ALL of this pain. Keep it up. Your passion will pull you through all of this hell.
Wow man are you telling me this is your first UA-cam video? You're gonna be huge one day trust me. You've got so much talent, keep uploading these awesome videos
on it!
I would love it if a discord was made for this ROM hack. It has so much potential and looks gorgeous. Its a game I can foresee myself sinking a lot of hours into and I would really love to be there the moment the beta drops.
Bro really made a whole game
well…almost
that part about the tackle sound needing to take the place of a music sound is really interesting, I always thought something like that was the reasoning behind it
I really hope you finish this because what I've seen looks real fun
I love the aesthetic you've accomplished! PLEASE FINISH THIS!!!
As a 28 year old guy who has been doing trainer modifications in gens 3 and 5. Which is nothing compared to this project. I'm super impressed bro. I hope you persevere and finish. I will absolutely play it if you do. Good luck! Stay nerdy
please do keep us updated on the project, especially with youtube videos
Keep up the good work!! It looks really good so far and im confident you'll get it together eventually!
Brother, this is SICK!! you GOTTA push through man, I'm rooting for you!
The fact this is your first video in this style is very impressive you're already great at editing and timing and voiceover I'm sure the video alone took hours apon hours apon hours much less making a full game for nothing but passion and love is very inspiring for me I'm so glad this blew up
where did this channel come from 😳
where did you come from
@@chris-piche idk but I don't remember not being here
I am mesmorized on how amazing this video is, the explanations and how you keep it so interesting. I cannot wait for the next update.
I'm so hyped for this, so please don't give up! Just take your time, take breaks, and work on it when you feel like it!
in case you need a remnder. YOU GOT THIS. YOU CAN DO IT. YES YES YES YES YOU CAN DO IT YOUR A BOSS YOU ARE A MAN MAN CREATED FIRE
holy shit this looks so dope. excited to play this when you eventually finish it! don't rush yourself!
You're an actual legend.
Wish you all the best with the rest of the developement!
Literally community mods ALWAYS outdo the main games in every single genre to date.
This is a sad reality
I know the project has gotten a little bloated but it does sound like if youre able to complete your vision it will be one of the best rom hacks ever made im very much looking forward to seeing it done
You didn’t waste your time. You’re learning how to do it properly. Keep up the good work!
this looks amazing fr. hope you finish it man, i really hope you finish it!
