- When I was a kid, I always wanted to make a Pokémon game. I tried out Sword and Shield in 2020, and didn't love it... So I decided to make my own game to see if I could do it better. How did I do this? Hacking Pokémon Fire Red.

That hit me so hard. It is the reason I hardly finish any of my own personal writing projects.
Perfection is the enemy of good. Nothing is ever perfect so in the pursuit of it we never reach a satisfying conclusion. We all need deadlines or a concrete goal and then stop.

I'm a software developer and hearing your journey making this was extremely relatable. Scope creeps, constant testing and version control are all part of the software development lifecycle! Welcome to the club.
Also, I suggest learning git to backup your project it's a real lifesaver.
On top of that a more robust build system than just changing a gba file until it's done sounds absolutely miserable! Building from the base assests would be much more stable, way more debuggable but does depend on a high quality disassembly which I'm not sure exists. Working on a single file iteration by iteration sounds so miserable!! I'm extremely impressed.
@@minerscale it has existed for a while, pokeemerald in github is a great example but there are many for the first few generations, and the people are hard at work disassembling anything that has pokemon in its name and it's not recent enough to warrant much action from game freak
Bro, if you decide to start over again, please work with the decomp project. It's a steep learning curve at the beginning, but it's super safe and will make debugging much much easier. You will never lose a project again. Keep the dream alive! A fellow rom hacker.

Decomp/disasm is the way to go nowadays. Only two years ago kind of bonks around in my head, as iirc the pret dumps were already on GitHub by then.
And yeah, way safer than binary hacking. Compilation/assembly might take longer to get together, but you don't have to make 898 backups of the same ROM. 😂

So I love this video for someone trying something new. But I think OP (and the romhacking community at large) takes too many shortcuts. If you learn to code, you don't need to be limited by 2004 tech. Or use all the romhacking tools. We are litterally being limited to 32 MB for no reason. I get a few people want an organic challenge, but to make the best game we can use our current tech. So for my game I'm making from scratch, I have the ability to implement custom status conditions, new abiliites, all new pokemon, snagging pokemon, playing remotely with friends etc. And I learned coding in one summer, and slowly built on it, so its not I was a master coder when I started this.

@WonderfulWorldofMarkets there's a difference between a fan game and a rom hack. A rom hack is patched onto the original rom and therefore is restricted by it

Stumbled this on my recommended, watching you struggle and put effort on to the romhack makes me want to see it to completion and play it. The concept is so good and having those gimmicks and new soundtrack is so cool. Looking forward to seeing this project complete

My friend linked me to this video and I was instantly filled with joy. I'm an on-and-off member of the romhack community (I mainly do art assets and character designs, as I'm the current character designer for Pokemon Gaia, so thanks for the shoutout to sphericalice!! lol) This looks really promising, honestly if I wasn't busier nowadays I would love to contribute to some stuff in the character department. The OST feels very nostalgic too haha, love it!! Regardless, I really love how all of this looks, I really encourage you to take your time and not overwork yourself, but simultaneously cheer you on and say that I'm looking forward on what this project has to offer!!!!

If you ever do this again, do not use sappy or advance map. Use the PokeFireRed disassembly and Porymap. Your corrupted game will thank you.

@@thunderlordabove420 no, selling it would be illegal. Simply putting it onto physical carts would be legal gray area, just look at Pokemon AshGray (an ROM hack)

Knowing what goes into making a game is really eye opening to what the developers of games go through. Because while personal projects can have no set deadlines, developers can't have that luxury.

While it might to a large degree be personal preference the new games really do not look that good, at least not when compared to what it could have been like if the games were made by an actually competent studio and focused on quality games rather than shitting out something half baked every year.
@@hygormotasantos4035 even 'advanced 3d technology' has standards you need to compare to other projects using that technology, and on average, the latest 3d games are pretty basic graphics wise

I was a romhacker a long time ago. Never got super far into anything, and I'm pretty sure I never helped on anything that got published, but man.. This is making me intensely nostalgic and wanting to go back and try to really start something again.

Damn, this got me inspired to revisit my hack back from college, another never-ending, no deadline game. The feeling of making a successful code with no experience...the beautiful art of mapping...the music making...So many proud moments

As someone who is currently in the middle of making their own Pokemon fan game, I can defo relate to just how frustrating it can be to make them. But I can also relate to that feeling of fun and gratification that comes with making your own version of a children's game you're passionate about!!

passion projects that get too big for your britches are a classic move but you learn a shit ton from them, it may suck when you kind of fumble around but in the end you get a lot more out of it than you "lost"

This was a delightful recommendation. I love the project, love the editing, and love the passion you put into all of this. Reminds me of when I started making a small “adjustment rom hack” to let my friends try an easy Nuzlocke in Emerald. Didn’t finish that one but now I’m feeling inspired!

Your content is so well made and I really hope your channel gets the recognition it deserves. I was dumb enough to buy it without going and doing research cuz Nintendo had never failed me before then, oh boy was that a bad decision.
It really seems like you're on to what will be one of the best Pokemon games we'll ever see. I seriously hope you finish this and can release it to the world for us all to enjoy. Imagine seeing the videos of people trying what you've worked so hard on, walkthrough videos, tips, showing every new feature that we've always wanted GameFreak to put into a game.
I know the dedication to projects like this from a music prospective and its gut wrenching to not finish what you've poured everything into for so long.

I really wish I had a stronger grasp on this kind of stuff, cause honestly the idea of making romhack pokemon games have always been such an interesting idea to me. Just getting into pokemon projects is such a blast. When I was way younger I worked on /vp/'s Pokemon Sage, just sketching fakemon designs and junk. While it wasn't always the smoothest experience (because it was on 4chan of all things) just being part of a big community group and seeing what designs made the voting cutoffs was such a thrilling feeling.
I really hope you keep going with this cause it really looks like some gorgeous work!

Holy shit, I can't believe this is a video from a channel with 100 subs, that was an absolutely fantastic video. Honestly? I'm subbing just to see when your ROM hack actually releases in the future, you got me interested. I've been personally juggling a personal modding project for the past half a year now and dumped god knows how many hours and custom assets on it, this is exactly my kind of vibe. I can't wait to play it!
The project looks so ambitious and amazing, awesome work! One of my favorite aspects of new Pokemon games coming out is having the newer pokemon, moves and other QOL features backported into previous gen 3/4/5 roms and how it pushes the roms to be really creative with their limitations, they just play such much better imo. Gen 3 rom hacks are my personal favorite, can't wait to check out a release if you continue with it!
