Well, @@WaYRt. Sometimes when a patron and a content creator love each other very verrrry much, the creator provides early access to their videos for the patron(s).

@@DanielLochner , but not make them green and red. In many games green numbers reserved for healing. You can also use different font for you damaging and you get dagamed.
You could always make it so the text color for giving and receiving damage is customizable in settings. That way people with varying forms of colorblindness can see it.
@@DanielLochnerI have a question for ya. How is the mobile version free? I see it says in the settings "restore in-app purchases" but I've yet to see a store. I ask because I both want to throw money at you for this and I'm curious how you're paying for servers.
WOW, that is a staggering amount of work for an open source multiplayer game/engine! Huge props for sticking with it after so much time spent and all the inevitable setbacks!!
I thought this was gonna be one of those 'thought experiment' type videos where they talk about IF they made it, what they'd do. But no, you legit coded and modeled and created and animated all of this pretty much entirely by yourself.. whilst also studying to graduate! just wow. Seriously I couldn't do this even without the added stress of irl stuff getting in the way lol you should be so proud of what you created!!!
It would be amazing if you added a keyframe animator to the game, so players with experience can animate their own animations for their creatures, attacks, walking, etc, it would make the game even better than it already is.
That’s a really good idea, but as @minestar2247 mentioned, it is unfortunately a bit tricky to implement! Animations are all procedural, which means that all movement of limbs are controlled by IK targets. That being said, those targets could be key-framed, but it would be better to control that via script so that targets could rather be moved to a target (e.g., moving the arm target towards a fruit on the ground to pick it up). Anyway, thanks for the suggestion! Glad you’re enjoying the game! 🥳
You'd probably have to restrict them in minigames too and such as you could make animations that just completely hide what you are doing, for example you could just remove all animations. Make animations that are just really excessive and intrusive. I feel it would detract a lot from the game.
I want so like the original spore when your creature does not have arms it could pick up items with it's mouth, for example if you would play in the tribal stage without arms your tribe members would just use their mouth to grab instruments
I love this whole thing, from recreating Spore, to the fact that you took things into your own hands to create the game you always wanted...I'm hoping to try and do the same with something akin to For Honor, so I'm happy to see this!
@@DanielLochnerit would be amazing if u could add the other stages for it, the cell, animal, tribal, citizens and space, that would be very amazing to have and play in multi-player
UA-cam recommended me this video and it instantly caught my eye. Finished it thinking I was watching some huge youtuber I didn't know. Then I saw you got 11k subs, you are so talented you need more. Also, I love spore and will surely play this tonight.
11/10 intro, that was perfect - It was really insightful seeing the entire process that's gone into this. Thank you for making this, and well done on all of the well-earned success! 💕I hope Creature Creator continues to thrive, especially with it being open-source, I'm excited to see what the community does with it.
Spore is honestly one of the best games I've ever played. I still sometimes play this game and love to use my creativity when playing, Thank you for this project.
OH MY GOSH!!!! MY DUDE THAT'S WHOPPING AWESOME WORK!!!! sorry about caps, but oh my lord. You did such a huge work, just fascinating, stunning. Can't wait to play it with my friend. Huge thanks to you Daniel ❤
Idea: A game mode that plays just like Spore's Creature stage with nests, migration, digging up parts, deciding between diplomacy and violence, but it's entirely with other players and it maybe plays out like a PUBG game except instead of starting from the sky everyone starts from the water after growing legs. Whoever evolves sapience first wins, or something like that. One tricky quagmire would be figuring out how the nests would work while the players aren't there. Maybe the player can set them on three different modes before leaving: Peaceful, Neutral, and Aggressive. Peaceful would be singing and dancing regardless, Neutral would be attacking if attacked or singing and dancing if sung and danced to, and Aggressive would be always attacking first. I could picture there being an implicit meta game to the game mode where diplomatic players would benefit by making creatures that the other players find funny. Matches could go a number of ways, probably being mostly just violence only considering it's probably mostly kids playing, but nests could team up on an overly aggressive nest that's a mutual enemy. Every small decision could have ripples. Maybe each player starts out with very few ways to communicate but as their brain develops they're allowed the ability to transmit more complex messages to one another? It'd be interesting to see the psychology of a player who's somehow conquered the meta and wins more often than most people. Are they antisocial or are they empathic? Also, surely a larger body would require more fuel to operate. Players would need to adapt accordingly to their environment, taking on only the mutations that they absolutely need and discarding everything that could waste energy and make the player need to consume more food. In order to compete with carnivorous players there might have to be adaptations for herbivores like flight or tree climbing in order to reach bountiful food sources at the tops of trees. Carnivores would be very high risk high reward depending on how far they are from other nests and how large the creatures are in their area. They may have to downsize and evolve some means to catch and consume insects, like a frog tongue or a poison cloud that brings bugs to the ground. I see this as a very useful tool for teaching people some semblance of how nature works, why we are the way that we are. Spore set out to do that, to mixed results. In real life things don't get binarily more good on an all encompassing scale the way that numbers increasing does in games. It's a very intuitive way to explain to children that all animals on Earth look the way they do because they stumbled into a biological niche. Imagine... it's like a Fortnite game except it depicts a surprisingly realistic expression of how evolution works, how culture evolved with some remnants of tribes being remaindered and others disappearing into the annals of completely undocumented history like a tree that fell in the woods with nobody there to hear it. Get existential.
Ok I feel like I'm the only one that's gonna say it because so many comments are saying 11/10. Good work, you did well alone and it's not an easy thing to do what you've made. Buttttt, it's not really a "Spore 2" it's a mini game filled multiplayer game and frankly, it looks, very basic imo. I know spore is too, but claiming a game like this, in 2024 is even similar to spore the multistage evolution and creature creator feels more like a cop out to me for clicks :/ the only similarity is the creature creator looking exactly like spores creature stage only. Again, well done, but the game just doesn't look good to me. Sorry :/ kinda like Dani's Crab Game if I'm forced to compare it to something in terms of visuals and design. And he's already got merch for it? Where's the freedom of spores creativity when you market out specific creature designs?
it feels close, but without an animated spine the life is just not there in any of the animations, and the missing geometry blending makes creatures feel much more like parts stuck together.
You're right, one guy should be able to make an AAA game with an entire team and millions of dollars, all by himself! Imagine going to a children's art day and criticizing them because they're not Rembrandt or Monet.
@Deadbeatcow all I'm saying is it's not spore 2, its a bunch of minigames like fall guys that'll get boring in minutes unlike spores almost endless concept and creativity. It's not great looking either imo as @Tuxfanturnip put it well, without the spine it looks poorly animated. This isn't a children's art day, he's an adult man not a kid, he can take some criticism in this sea of overly positive response.
Awesome video! I love how much work you put into it, showing the creation process of your game. And the video editing was great too! Seeing stuff like that also motivates me to put even more work into my own game. Really excited to see what other things you'll do with the "Creature franchise".
@@Hietakissa Aint about competing, doesnt need to be better than everyone elses thing, just make something you're happy with. It's yours, have fun with it. That is honestly the best thing u can do with creating anything. Just have fun with the process.
@@HietakissaSeconding what Zynstein8059 said! Especially for passion projects, as long as you aren’t outright stealing people’s work and passing it off as your own and instead build off of ideas that you think are good but with your own twists and ideas that you want to see, there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel! Use projects you find inspiring or motivational or just plain cool and figure out exactly what about it leaves such a positive impact on you. Instead of seeking to “one-up” it or compete with it, wear your inspirations on your sleeve and use that as motivation to start your own projects! You’ll find that the process of ideating will become much more natural when you don’t pressure yourself to make something perfect right away, or to try and copy somebody else but make it “better”. Let your brain wander and take things in new directions, then when you’re finally ready to settle down on a project, you can sweep away the ideas that you found interesting but didn’t fit into their own documents to use as inspiration later! That way it doesn’t clutter and destabilize your work. Obviously there’s a lot more nuance to this and I’m just getting into the complex world of game development myself, but remember this: Everybody works at their own pace. Everybody learns at their own pace. Everybody creates at their own pace. And just because you don’t feel like you can do something now, doesn’t mean you can’t learn to do it in the future. And when you learn, you’ll often find a myriad of other useful experiences to draw from as well. In an industry where people compete all of the time, I think that it’s useful to remember that you don’t have to set standards for yourself that you don’t feel like you can reach yet. Key word here, yet. I believe in you, and good luck on your journey, wherever you choose to go and whatever you choose to take part in. You’ve got this. o7 (P.S. Sorry for the novel, I’m just very passionate about these kinds of things!)
Man this dev log was so impressive it completely shattered any of my game dev confidence after I realized I can't do 99% of the things in the video :D Amazingly well-done, good sir!
No lo hacen porque saben que si Spore fue de los juegos más pirateados en su momento, hacer un juego mejor simplemente lo haría el juego más pirateado y amado del mundo (los precios de EA serían los causantes de la piratería)
Thanks for this video ^^ There is a little studio (Seven Ducks Studios) who work on a "Spore game "called Elysian Eclipse. They are still in early development phase but it's looking good !
Legit the most underrated developer, UA-camr, spore enthusiast and absolute madlad! I was so lucky to have got a chance to try this game in the early stage
I don't know if you know but there is an other guy working on a new version of spore called elysian eclipse, he mostly focussed on the aquatic stage so far u2 together already have close to 2 stages.
Feels like the game could've capitalized more on the survival and evolving aspect of the creature stage in Spore. Kinda bummed the game went in more of a minigames/Co-op direction. Would've loved to see a true Spore-esque creature stage. Also kinda weird seeing human built structures and cars in a game about evolution and creatures. I also looked at the Battle Sim and Evolution Sim but non of them seem to be anything like the Spore creature stage. Still love the game though ever since I bought it back in August 2022.
A full evolution game with multiple stages is what I'm trying to do. Or if you are looking for just creature stage specifically, take a look at "Adapt".
Thanks so much for the support for all this time! I appreciate it! Yes, I wanted to try offer something different to Spore by focusing on the multiplayer aspect! As Wauz mentioned there are other games in development by other developers though which may be of interest to you! Adapt, The Sapling, Elysian Eclipse and Thrive to name a few!
@@DanielLochner But that is really the thing I feel like was a bit of a missed opportunity. When playing Spore, the idea that all the other creatures running around could be online players intrigued me and I think a game like that with focus on open world PvP, survival, making friends and joining forces together with other creatures would be my ultimate game. I've heard that Elysian Eclipse will have multiplayer, so maybe that'll be the perfect game for me.
@@DanielLochneryou really think your goat simulator copy is an experience people want more than the Spore creature stage? You know people just want Spore but multiplayer, you are wasting the potential of this game by not creating that.
1:07 what’s really funny to me is I basically worked backwards in the timeline of spore. I was introduced to the series with Darkspore, enjoyed it, got Spore Hero, enjoyed that, then got the main Spore game and loved that.
I bought this as soon as it came out on Steam, as it was finally another Spore like game. Had no damn idea it was made by a fellow South African. Mad respect man! Can't wait for the other 2 "spin-off" titles to come out as well :)
I have never played Spore nor Creature Creator, but I found the "story of how I did it" very compelling and interesting to watch. Very well done video - I guess one can see the amount of work and time that went into this video.
It's as open as GTA etc... the game can be approached non linearly with near complete control of where you go and what you do when you choose to, that's open world in most books.
You know whatd make a killer Spore reboot? Launch the game on PC, Switch, PS5 and Series X/S on the same day with crossplay multiplayer. Charge $50 for the base game, and have a $60 Deluxe Edition that comes with a selection of body parts from the game, similar to the board game Cooties. You can also sell extra of these sets for $15 a pop, and have different themed sets and, thus, different deluxe editions. And to give more incentive to build a Spore creature irl, you can take a picture of your newly-built creation, import the image into the game, and play it out.
Your choice of music made me feel like I was being shown a corporate presentation lol, I edit videos like that for a living so as soon as I heard ‘Business Corporate Fun Lively #4’ I started shrivelling, there’s a lot more than just that business meeting crap on adobe stock, other than that great video.
That's cool but why not make the original vision of Spore? Where it was more procedural animation style creatures and more realistic evolution before it was dumbed down. THAT's the game I'm still hoping to see one day
@@The_Qcumber So far these "spore successors" have been doing little outside of a basic semblance of a creature creator for the gimmick and leave at that, I don't have high hopes for these projects honestly
Thanks Daniel for making it, I hope you'll continue to work on it & give it love. Hope it will grow and eventually become what Spore could've possibly been if EA gave a shit about anything besides profits & living in luxury with as little effort as possible. World needs more passion projects like this and people who actually care, and care not just about the money but things that can bring a lot of joy to people's lives.
This is an amazing project, and so far, the outcome is pretty solid. But there are a few issues that don’t seem to appeal for a creature creation game. The lack of texture on the creatures. It makes every one look very mat and generic despite their diverse bodies and ideas. Making more shiny textures, slimy ones, furry or any texture that would spread unevenly across the creature’s body would make them feel much more alive. The patterns as swell, feel and are too geometrical to be a live being’s. Maybe scales, spots, zebra stripes that are not copy pasted patterns could do the trick and feel much more lively :) The maps. Maybe add more diverse tree models to them? The trees look like they have been copy pasted throughout the entire map (which they probably have been) and makes the game much less immersive, making it feel low quality. Adding a few more models of a tree (example: instead of one pine tree model make it three so that the copy pasting is much less obvious), sizing up and down or even just rotating the trees would make it less robotic. The lack of flora diversity. This game has interesting concepts and ideas for maps, but when they are revealed to you, they might seem… a bit empty. Especially the caves and tunnels. That is only because of the lack of details: a huge chunk of glowing rock sprouting out of nowhere with no sign of size diversity anywhere in the tunnels make it seem empty. Adding smaller pieces before the big crystal opening would hint the beginning of a new biome and build up intrigue before the final reveal. Little pieces of moss and fungi across the walls would also be a very nice touch. (I unfortunately do not know if that amount of detail is possible. Perhaps too much detail will slow down game play and favor lag…) It’s a shame that the effort in coding and rendering creatures feels less professional because of rather easy to fix design issues. Don’t get me wrong, it is much easier said than done and I could never get as far as you did. I am an artist, not a game creator. I draw and create landscapes, my opinion and critique is solely based on that experience =v= Adding more organic (and a bit less obvious copy pasting) textures to creatures and maps would make the game even better in my opinion! :D Otherwise keep up the amazing work, I’m sure that it will only get better and better as time goes by :]
i already have this game bought from like a year or so and didn't even know anything about your channel nor you, happy to see your video about the development
creature evosim sounds really interesting, i’ve had an idea for a spore-like game for ages where you would collect exp for playing and whatever skills you used more you would sort of naturally develop the parts, and whatever skills you use less the parts would atrophy and then become vestigial
There's so much I can appreciate from this video! I've played the game for myself on android so far, and it's really fun. Tho, I did see some creative limits for those who want to put in more detail while being stopped by complexity and money. Overall, I can't wait to see what's in-store for the future of this game! Plus amazing video btw 11/10! :>
Thank you so much for the support, and I’m glad you liked the video! 😄 There is actually a setting in single-player creative mode to enable unlimited cash and complexity!
Well this is more like Spore Hero 2. This game seems to have a smaller storyline involving getting vengeance on the humans. Spore Hero had a smaller storyline about saving a planet from a malevolent counterpart of yours. Spore 2 is Elysian Eclipse because it seems to go through all the stages of the Spore game and then some. Though Creature Creator will likely have a lot of spin-off games based on itself.
I am SO impressed that you have done this. I've played the OG Spore since release and the fact that you have done this off your own back is just amazing! The level of learning to produce this is far beyond me, these days. The level of 'problem solving' alone just goes to show your dedication. Well done, doesn't seem to cover it.
you should add a gungame type minigame. everyone starts as lvl 1 scrubs, you need to collect points to unlock more limbs/weapons/defense etc as your lvl goes up you can get point via map based goals or eating other players. if you are eaten you go down a lvl, if you eat and get enough points you go up.
I can't but admire people like you - for me, everything here looks like real-life magic. I understand I wouldn't ever be able to do ANY of these, even under a barrel of a gun Good luck with everything
As a dude trying to make a game myself... man this is a ride to watch. I'm happy to see just how much work you put into it, but also how level headed you are with your own game. I've seen just a few too many who think that just because the put a lot of time into their work that it is the best thing ever. (That said you did wonders with your game don't ever think you hadn't) To see you're seeing how you could do things better, learning from those mistakes, and aiming just a bit higher? I wish you the world of luck.

You really didn't make Spore 2, quite the bait. A successor should have all of what the previous game had and then some. Creature creator is good, but it's far from being Spore 2, more of a spinoff really. The fallout 76 to your fallout 4? kinda
You know what? Just because you made it Open Source, I'm gonna buy it. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise because I didn't want to play it. But I support your effort and generosity.
I still remember seeing the devlog video over two years ago, and I thought to myself: "yeah, this looks good. Hope the dev doesn't give up because the potential is there." Lo and behold, this game has proved to be a massive hit. You love to see a success story like this one. Congratulations!
personally to me, the art style of this just is not spore-ish, sure the concept kinda but besides that not really and even then this is just the creature stage, good job but would not call this spore 2 in all honesty
sad to see the first half of this video and seeing so much potential and then you jsut put the creatures into a human world with obsticales. sad, but this is not spore 2 imo.
for team minigames, why not do a restricted color palette? You can still customize, but the colors are forced to be distinct to the team you're on to a degree
While this is definitely another creature creator, and the addition of multiplayer is something the original didn't have, calling in Spore 2 is a bit inaccurate. It's really not a similar game at all besides the creature editing.
little tip just in case: something that might help a lot with how the creatures look is adjusting normals! you could technically go crazy with procedural normals to create really cool materials that look like different textures, scales, feathers etc, but I'm not sure if that would fit well with the game. but the biggest improvement would probably be just making the normals of different parts blend into each other, it would fit the art direction while making it look significantly more polished
Rather pretentious to claim its the spiritual successor to spore when your version completely misses that the whole point of the game and all its hype was not creature phase, but raising and evolving a creature from cell to space god. That said, pretty damn impressive to do all this as one person.
At the end of the video you said "or at least my pain entertaining", but except for those error reportings, there were no other pain parts in this video. I hope we can see more pain in the next video. Thanks!
From messing around on my phone, one of my main problems is that it is hard to see what bone you have selected as it doesnt get highlighted. In addition, when trying to drag up to resize the bone it just moves it most of the time
About 5:45 Just so anyone learning programming here knows. Having large classes is not a problem. Having a single class that's 5k lines long is not bad in itself, and if you can have 5k lines of code without repeating yourself, and that code exists only in that one class you don't need to sub-divide it into multiple classes. You should mainly separate functions and classes when you need to re-use code, or have a piece of code whose logic is completely different from the sorrounding code (eg: if you have a function that manipulates the skelet to align feet to the ground, and in the middle you need to do collision checks. Separating everything into individual files and classes has its own drawbacks, affecting performance, affecting code legibility, making it harder to optimize the code, and harder to see what actually gets changed, etc.
Congratz on your Honors my guy. Really love the game it gives this sandbox/live sim feel to it where it's up to how the player wants to interact with the world and how they want to play
Yes Daniel! So much good stuff here. Loved seeing the problem/solution process at each stage from the past 3 years. The walking animation/IK stuff was really cool and very well explained. Always thought it looked cool but I never got the opportunity to play Spore when I was younger. Thought this was just a random video that I might play on the side to pass the time, but it was actually really interesting and had all my attention. Can't believe it went from simple video on recreating SPORE's creature creator to the semi fully fledged game with it's own merch etc! h what a great adventure it was (and still is) following the progress of this project!

Sadly it would probably be hard to implement, take away attention from other parts, and not be used by most people
That’s a really good idea, but as @minestar2247 mentioned, it is unfortunately a bit tricky to implement! 🥳
@@DanielLochnerhave a mini coding area or some variables you can tweak so you can change the animation.
You'd probably have to restrict them in minigames too and such as you could make animations that just completely hide what you are doing, for example you could just remove all animations. Make animations that are just really excessive and intrusive. I feel it would detract a lot from the game.
@@connorallgood0922 yeah
I want so like the original spore when your creature does not have arms it could pick up items with it's mouth, for example if you would play in the tribal stage without arms your tribe members would just use their mouth to grab instruments

Slay.
THIS! Spore can develop such a gameplay depth, so many playstyles, that its sad it's relegated to development jail.
I can’t believe you only have around 10k subscribers. The editing is phenomenal!
You go calculate the amount of warehouses you'd need to rent out to fit ten thousand people and I'll let you know if that bill is small.

I know spore is too, but claiming a game like this, in 2024 is even similar to spore
the multistage evolution and creature creator feels more like a cop out to me for clicks :/ the only similarity is the creature creator looking exactly like spores creature stage only.

Funnily enough, it does the exact opposite for me. If other people can already make games like this, then how could I ever compete?
Obviously there’s a lot more nuance to this and I’m just getting into the complex world of game development myself, but remember this:
Everybody works at their own pace.
You’ve got this. o7

There's also "thrive" very promising game on paper but I think the developement stopped

I have never played Spore nor Creature Creator, but I found the "story of how I did it" very compelling and interesting to watch. Very well done video - I guess one can see the amount of work and time that went into this video.
This is sick. I do wanna mention though that this is just not an open world. It's an interconnected world but it's not open
Just put spore on consoles and switch and I'll be happy

That's cool but why not make the original vision of Spore? Where it was more procedural animation style creatures and more realistic evolution before it was dumbed down. THAT's the game I'm still hoping to see one day
yes, this, why didn't just do this.
Maybe scales, spots, zebra stripes that are not copy pasted patterns could do the trick and feel much more lively :)
The maps.
I draw and create landscapes, my opinion and critique is solely based on that experience =v=
Adding more organic (and a bit less obvious copy pasting) textures to creatures and maps would make the game even better in my opinion! :D
Otherwise keep up the amazing work, I’m sure that it will only get better and better as time goes by :]

The amount of love and time invested here is just unbelievable. Incredible work!
creature evosim sounds really interesting, i’ve had an idea for a spore-like game for ages where you would collect exp for playing and whatever skills you used more you would sort of naturally develop the parts, and whatever skills you use less the parts would atrophy and then become vestigial

Will Elysian Eclipse have multiplayer though?

I'm so excited about this! I've always been very upset Spore didn't get a sequel or remake. You're making my dreams come true ❤
you should add a gungame type minigame.
everyone starts as lvl 1 scrubs,
you need to collect points to unlock more limbs/weapons/defense etc as your lvl goes up
you can get point via map based goals or eating other players.
if you are eaten you go down a lvl, if you eat and get enough points you go up.
I do hope over time as the game progresses, that you make it more like spore but looks great so far. Cant imagine how hard a custom creator is
Elysian Eclipse is doing a similar thing

sad to see the first half of this video and seeing so much potential and then you jsut put the creatures into a human world with obsticales. sad, but this is not spore 2 imo.
for team minigames, why not do a restricted color palette?

Just so anyone learning programming here knows.
I’ve always wanted a multiplayer creature stage

I don't know why I have not heard of your work sooner, but I thank the YT algorithm for being here today. I am certainly buying and supporting your work ASAP, as I wshed to do with Spore... I wish you the best luck possible!
EA can’t figure out how to put a battle pass and make it a live service game so they just aren’t making it.
“I will never greenlight a game that does not have a live service model”
Always thought it looked cool but I never got the opportunity to play Spore when I was younger. Thought this was just a random video that I might play on the side to pass the time, but it was actually really interesting and had all my attention. You provide enough detail that someone more curious knows where to look for more, but not so much that it's overly technical. That's a pretty amazing collection of work you've put into this game. Best of luck to you with it and your studies.
