    The only thing I'll say about Octavion is that while his death is annoyingly unfortunate, preventable and so so close to not happening his last conversation with the Doctor is masterfully written.
    Dr: I'm sorry. I wish I'd known you better.
    Oc: I think, sir, you knew me at my best.

      Oh yes I definitely agree. His death only stands out as being frustrating/easily-preventable because of how awesome the character is, and it would’ve been great to see more of him

      Maybe he felt like he owed her one from her fixing his arm. And as someone who has fallen down a crumbling hill, not into a tar pit but it sure as hell hurt... I can honestly say, you don't get to choose which way you fall. All it takes is one wrong step.

    I think the bus driver's death was necessary from the audience's viewpoint -- we, the viewers, needed evidence that the portal was fatal; therefore, *some* living being had to be sacrificed. That said, the script could have shown the Doctor trying harder to prevent it.

    Damn, it’s rough when you get so much wrong in the first minute, it makes me want to comment.
    Lucy’s death is what made the masters reincarnation go wrong. The Doctor even says so, that’s why his metabolism is going so fast the master is using his life force, also using his life force for the new powers he has.. lightning fists.
    If she did nothing the master would of been fully restored by the people who gave their life force to bring him back. And then the master would of tormented Lucy again or killed her. Her death by messing up his reincarnation is not pointless. Also if she didn’t die, they would of had to incorporate her as the masters unwilling servant into the story. Her death and what it caused set up a good portion of that 2 part episode.
    If she did nothing to intervene and the master came back and killed her in the spot. Then her death would be pointless, but wait even then it wouldn’t be. Because she had to be there because she had some of the masters DNA. On her? In her? They don’t really say, they just wipe her lips and have the masters DNA even tho I think the episode says it had been quite some time since his death.

    • @danthemeegs8751
      @danthemeegs8751 3 роки тому +7

      The point is that Lucy didn’t succeed in her main goal - to kill The Master. All she ended up doing was giving him a new power. She’d have been better off using her resources to escape the prison and find the Doctor.

    • @darudesandstrom1067
      @darudesandstrom1067 3 роки тому +12

      Thank you! Even though she didn’t succeed, it’s definitely not pointless because she would have died anyway, so at least she made it so the master didn’t return at full strength and she died on her own terms

    Some of these deaths serve as a “visible consequence” for an action taken or failed to take so the audience knows something can’t be done a certain way,
    Like the Bus Driver walking through the portal, he does the thing, burns to a crisp, we as an audience know they can’t walk through the portal.
    While it was verbally explained, show it don’t tell it works better in this instance IMO

    • @Croftice1
      @Croftice1 2 роки тому

      It was actually shown with the bus. You see what state it is in, the skeleton holds, but overall, pretty messed. And it was that bus, that protected them, so a squishy human thinks they have a chance on their own? That really was unnecessary. The trip alone was shown, that it's not just a simple portal, you jump in and pop out immediately on the other side. Nope, it took a while to go through with a bus! So a trip on foot without anything to cover, to protect you? A very bad idea.

    In the book of "Earthshock" the reason why the Doctor is unable to save Adric is explained in more detail: the freighter, as it's travelling back through time, is phasing in and out at random. This, combined with the damage to the console, means the TARDIS can't materialize onboard in time to save Adric.

    I like to think that 'pointless' deaths are actually very important. Perhaps the person who died would either have had children (or at least influence a child) who might grow up to be a saint...or a monster (if not that kid, perhaps one of their descendants). Perhaps the very existence of the 'pointless character' at a certain location, at a certain time might defect 'fate' from affecting some other person for good or bad...they literally were 'in the way'.
    Time, itself, might be using the Doctor to do a little tidying up, so to speak.

      Which she would still die, While yes The Doctor might have Infinite Lives (Rumour for Series 13, The Master might be the Timeless Child, he lied to the doctor about it being her) But if she is killed before Regeneration, she would still fully die. The Master and the Master Race have HER DNA if she is the Timeless Child, even she would have the Master's DNA if he did end up being the Timeless Child. Basically what I am saying is, No the Doctor would have still died, then it would have been the end of Doctor Who entirely, Be glad Chibnall didn't decide to do that.

    • @Croftice1

    I'm 42 seconds in, and ... the potion did nothing? It was the thing that prevented the Master from being brought back fully, which motivated his entire set of actions in the story. "So hungry" and all that. It also seemed to be why he was giving off energy the way he did, which enabled him to respond to Rassillon at the end of the story. So ... the entire story turned on Lucy Saxon's use of the potion.

    Day of the Daleks: Two unnamed UNIT guards patrolling the grounds outside the estate ; Shura (one of the resistance guerrillas from the future) disintegrated them without a reason when the guerrillas were supposed to be maintaining stealth. The Green Death: The coal miners Hughes, Dai Evans and Bert each (stupidly) touched the glowing green slime dripping down the mine wall - one of the most easily avoided deaths in the show's entire history. Similarly in The Ark In Space, Noah/Lazon goes down into the power and becomes infected by the Wirrn maggot after stunning the 4th Doctor who was trying to warn him about the danger there. The Claws of Axos: Pigbin Josh (vagrant) walks up to what is clearly something alien, gets dragged inside and literally has the life sucked out of him, leaving a husk. In the same story, Winser, the nuclear research scientist, tries to open the light accelerator chamber when there is clearly something dangerous happening inside, and is consumed/transformed by the Axonite. [This is just for a start - the list is endless]

The driver wasn't rational enough to heed this warning, eventhough he clearly saw, what the thing did with his bus. Come on, walking through that unprotected? The BEST idea ever! Also he was a bus driver, a person, responsible for safely taking the people back home, that was his job, wasn't it? They were stranded on a strange alien planet and what did he do? Thought about HIMSELF. He saw the shortest way home, so he went and basically abandoned his passengers on an alien planet. If he survived, he should be fired from his job. Luckily he didn't.
