- In this video Larry picks up a very crude early first year model ‘52 Les Paul that was just worked on by Andrew Jellison at Strung Out Guitar Repair in Nashville.
The miracle bridge that retrofits on to the ancient original tailpiece that these guitars came with from the factory is designed by Music City Bridge.

Hope you enjoy
[When I get that notification for a new Homeskoolin vid, I drop everything (except my drink) and click on it. Thank you Uncle Larry, hope your healing is fast.]
this is my dream guitar. Old goldtop with p90s. like a tele for dads.
How wonderful and fair it is to return to a 70-year-old grandfather the opportunity to sing and delight people with his music. Andrew is just a wizard. Tom is a famous wizard)
70 years to be finally in tune…I’m 70 also
It’s funny how some of these early electric guitar designs are simultaneously amazing, and also “what were they thinking??”
Oh my my, that is one sweeeeet sounding geetar.......
Putting an amp in the old school TV hutch is such a good idea
It's amazing brother, everything you know about the guitar. Not just playing, you're obviously one of the greatest players to ever pick up the guitar. But, things you know that aren't related to playing. You're a wealth of information, and entertainment. Like the guy that left the comment earlier, I've been watched since the second Corona lessons. I'm pretty sure I've seen them all many of them multiple times. You're an institution Tom. Please don't ever stop my brother. We all need these videos.
There is joy on this child's face! What a sweet guitar and Andrew is a true master, great video Uncle Larry.
UNCLE LARRY! I'M SO GLAD I STUMBLED ACROSS YOUR COVID LESSONS SOME THREE YEARS AGO! IF I'M EVER IN NASHVILLE, CAN I BUY YOU A ROLLING ROCK? IT'S THE LEAST I CAN DO! YOU BROUGHT ME BACK TO MY LOVE OF THE GUITAR.
When I see guys working on guitars that really know what they are doing, it's so relaxing and enjoying!
Great video. Outstanding craftsmanship by Andrew. Thank you for all your video's and sharing all the great info.
I also have a 52 LP. WITH a Music City Bridge. And i has been refretted. A true joy to play. Nice low action. And it sounds fantastic. I just love that old wood.
Loving all the love that luthiers and shop folks get here. Having some super-cat gee-tar fixers and cool knowledgeable store folk are two the advantages of being part of this world. A good hang with good folks is good for the soul. Helps you grow as a human. All the best guys.
Love guitar talk. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, sounds wonderful Unc. Congrats
Very cool restoration! Sounds fantastic.
What an awesome Relic job
That guitar sounds amazing!!!!
Beautiful!!
Thank you for sharing such an epic moment with us tom! Happy days 🍻
Got that bridge on my '53. Had some issues because one of the original bushings was a slightly different size. Sent both bushings over to Joshua at Music City Bridge & he had the bridge made to match. Great guys over there!
Sounds as beautiful as it looks !!!
Hope to hear more from this guitar! Sounds great.
Thanks Uncle Larry...
Great video. That must be very satisfying for the both of you. Thank you.
Outstanding video...cheers for Uncle Larry, Andrew, and Music City Bridge! Love the Savvy on my Special!
SO THANKFUL you played this beautiful specimen... I was getting nervous there wasn't going to be any show and tell of Andrew's phenomenal work. 😅 What a class act that dude is!! Congrats on that beautiful piece of history!!
Fantastic video
Excellent video. So cool to see that artifact brought back to what it should be and beyond with that bridge upgrade. I.Hope we see more of you playing this guitar!
Very very cool!! thank you!
I love it! ❤
These are some of my favorite videos, when two or more buds talk guitars
Wow, this is just the holy grail guitar. What a great bass on that neck pickup and stellar playing like always. Thank you Uncle Larry for lightening up my day:)
Such an amazing instrument the neck pinup with this beautiful low end acoustic ringing ❤ Beautiful job from Andrew 👏👍🎵
awesome video - super cool sounding guitar - that growl... that's a ghost in there. those old p-90s--- amazing.

damn that '52 sounds GOOOOOOOD. amazing playing, as always.
That was great!!!!
Holy crap Tom, what a saucy guitar! I'm happy for you to have it so ship shape man. Beautiful looking and sounding and a pretty piece of rosewood on that fretboard.
Yummy... in tune and with tone for days! Makes me smile to hear it and to see you getting so much joy from playing it. Rock ON, Unc!
One of your best videos Uncle Larry… I’m just sitting here with a big smile on my face as I watched this unplayable classic be transformed into a true player.
Bet that old 52 would have thanked you if it could talk! Awesome vid!
I love this old guitar videos
Now that's a thing of beauty!
Good lord, that gold top is sublime. Sooooo beautiful.
Awesome vid!
Hey Tom, I’m glad to see you are investing in GOLD! That thing is awesome.
Definitely one of the coolest guitars I've ever seen, that's for sure. 💯🔥🔥🔥
Hey Buko. All the stuff you learned from Bubba you tell us about you’re giving to us in these über insightful episodes. Thank you Bro! Looking forward to seeing this newest addition in the future.
Your pal in Boston, Darin
After watching your last "Homeskoolin' Goes to Gruhn's" video and listening to George distinguish the three classes of vintage guitar buyers, I think that goldtop is pretty dang lucky to be in your collection!
What a Jem instrument and and Andrew the amazing wizard artist of repair brings it to life like never before ! Coolest 😎
Of the cool !!!
💪🎸
Nice guitar! Same case style as my Gibson lapsteel. Thanks for this video! Really informative
Check out the funk on that beauty!! 🤩
That’s a beautiful guitar!!
AND, it matches the Monte Carlo!!😮🤘
Keepin on rockin in the free world my friend!
Thanks, Andrew. ‘preciate you Uncle Lawrence.
This was super fun.
Man that's a rad one Tom!
Thank you. Very cool. Looks like the value of early gold tops just went up significantly. And that’s a big wow. Also, loved the part on saving nibs. I’m facing a first time regret on my gold top and would love to keep the nibs even if I give up some playability).
Great to see you're bringing those fine guitars back to music, that's where they belong. I wish you a swift healing, all the best.
One groovy looking Gold Top Tom .
Bet that sounds ferocious through your Plexi!! Congrats on getting it in good working order.
Like watching the birth of something beautiful!!! 😁😁✌✌😘😘💕💕
I love guitar so much
Hoping we get to hear that one some more soon
I’ll take any camera work that you offer on your videos Uncle Larry. We are very fortunate to be able to see your posts. Thanks for posting!
Andrew worked on my 78 P Bass a long time ago and it is still rocking bc of him. An old Gruhn friend :)
Man that thing is sweet
Nice looking guitar there !
Amazing stuff mate !! Love how he has an amp where the rest of the population would put their T.V....
Well done Andrew.
best looking guitar ever.
That headstock veneer is in great shape. Sweet Lester
In 2017 our local dealer came up with a 1952 gold top that he bought in Buffalo NY just up the road. That guitar was in a closet, and later under a bed since 1955. The guy bought it and never played it! After he passed away the family found it cleaning out the house. It was in the original shipping box. Inside that was a brown leather soft bag, with a handle on it. Inside the leather bag was the original case! Inside the case was all the literature, a hang tag, and the original bill of sale.. folded neatly like it was yesterday! There was not a mark on anything, it was factory new!! They wanted $36,000 for it. I didn't tell anyone about it, and for 6 months I tried to figure out how to do $36k I didn't want to flip it, I wanted to keep it. The week I finally talked my wife into taking the $36k from my 401, they sold it, for $34,000. They finally plugged it in, it sounded ok, but needed the neck work. It had a forward bow. I had even bought the wide tang frets to push the bow back, I saw it early! That's my 1 story about "the one that got away" LOL. Thanks for reading if you got this far! 8) Peace --gary
Thanks Tom, hope your face feels better
That finish 🤌🏻
I’m always impressed by your playing and knowledge of vintage instruments.
There must be something about them besides inflation that causes these instruments to rise in value.
Plus the modifications that are applied to fix their flaws.
God damn... Your playing at the end was fucking incredible. Be well Tommy from Cleveland.
Hope you heal up quickly, Tom and that you and your boys are doing well and having fun with Dad in the "Family Band" ;-)
Hey Uncle Larry there used to be a music store in Florida called Boca Vintage that specialized in the 54 to 56 conversion. They changed out the trapeze for a tune o’ matic and a stop tail piece. Great idea for the time in my opinion. Also I’ve got a feeling you’ll regret not getting that binding issue addressed. Of course you can do it yourself. I did on my Martin. I used wood glue although I think super glue is recommended. Great episode as always. Love you man.
You have an 'eye' for guitars Uncle Larry
F’n sweet!
Way cool Tom!
Very Cool, Thankyou. Nice Work. What an Amazing Guitar, I hope for a 'Discount' Copy one day. All the Best. Cheers
Great!
awesome sauce.
First-year LP didn't have fingerboard binding, or so I thought. Rad guitar!
As a coincidence, John Bohlinger has a pretty sweet 52 going now too. Nice to see em played again!
My god I know you just had the eyebrow extraction but man you are blessed in many other area's!
My favorite line: "Why is my camera being so sh*tty? Can you fix it?"
Tom does not have a problem asking for help.
One of my favorite tones is Johnny Echols of Love on the forever changes album but also the b side of that album. 52 goldtop straight into a ac30🔥
the Best ever.
Oooh, that’s nice!
I had a ‘64 SG Special for awhile. Had to shim up the bridge P90 to get some *oomph* from it, but as Tom says you can’t get it as loud as the neck pickup. At least not if you want it to still sound good.
The group of Music City Bridges solve many of the issues that caused people to butcher those old Gibsons in hopes of getting them playable. More folks need to know about them. It kills me how nice those original tuners look.
That guitar looks good on you.
+1 for Yellowstone t shirt - need a new one that says
*don't pet the hot spring*
Nice 👍
A 52!! Insane. Yous a lucky man. Great guitar. Love hearing the luthiers comments. What is the actual hight of the action? .050, .060? What an amazing piece of history.
