I love that Josh plays good riffs on the JHS videos. It seems that 99% of every pedal demo on UA-cam the guitarist follow the rule of, “playing the worlds worst riffs.” Thank you, Josh for playing riffs that I’d actually listen to on an album.
This could easily become the next holy grail pedal for live and recording. It does what everyone who ever used a tube screamer really wanted but it didn't exist.
Probably not what a lot of people focus on, but I really appreciate how high quality your videos are. Your audio recording is fantastic and your cinematography skills with some of the more animated shots are just beautiful.
I discovered your channel yesterday and I'm on a huge binge! I love your personality, how passionate you are about music, and how you are entertaining and educational at the same time! I'd never thought of stacking drives and boost Before, but now I want to buy a boost pedal. Keep up the great work!
This was the pedal I never knew I needed until I bought one and plugged it in for the first time! It can really help to thicken up single coils through a strat and dialing up the mid boost on a Les Paul junior just makes the p90s absolutely scream (even more than they already do). This one will always have a permanent home on my pedalboard!
I have been haunted by mids that are determined by others. With the Sweep knob, I very quickly find a frequency that makes my guitar amp very happy. My guitar comes into a resonant focus that makes a 112, 212, 412 etc. cabinet sound louder. It helps me dial in different rooms and amps quickly.
It's an amazing result when you cascade 2 of these together. First, you pick the frequency that you want to boost, turn the mid knob all the way up, then find the exact frequency on the 2nd pedal, turn the mid knob all the way down to be greeted with a completely transparent version of your original signal. 😎
Dude, love the personality you put into your pedals and the pride you take in them. Thanks for producing these vlogs, they are informational and enjoyable.
My pedal just arrived… I must say I’m VERY happy with it. I thought it would just be an EQ pedal with less EQ features but that’s not my experience… It kept the tone and brightness and bass the same and just cleared up a touch of the muddiness from the heavier strings I put on AND helps sharpen the tone to cut through the mix and give more bite
Damn this is actually exactly what I need. I decided to start playing my strat more but my main amp, a Supro Coronado doesn’t have a mid control. I like to use more mids than highs with a strat, and this has exactly the controls you need and nothing more or less.
Gosh darn you, Josh. I got my Haunting Mids last week, and it's now the most useful pedal I own. The reason I say gosh darn you is, I think I need a second or maybe even a third so I can have one for each situation I want to use it for. I use a scoop (10:00 and 10:00) for metal distortion, a bump (2:00 and 2:00) for some bluesy, raunchy p-90 snarl. Oh, and it's a great clean boost that's customizable exactly the way I want. I only own one other pedal that makes me want another one. The OBNE Dark Star used to be my favorite pedal. Maybe it still is. But this one is right up there. Cheers!
Brilliant idea. Mids are my main concern when tone shaping, most of the 'character' of guitar tone is in the Mids, at least to my ear. It is a control often left off pedals, and even my current amp only has Bass & Treble controls. I went online to search if anyone made a sweepable mid pedal, and here it is. Nice. Instead of fiddling with different pots, pickups and capacitors, this pedal could potentially make the tone change you want in your guitar without unnecessary upgrades.
I fucking love Josh as a person and the way he carries himself as a brand. So down to earth when talking about specifics and tries to lay everything out in terms professionals and beginners can understand. Love the name of this pedal and it has a fantastic use. Realistically speaking, the mids is the biggest influence in your guitar tone aside the fingers, technique etc. It's just how you level your mids and which frequencies you prefer to cut. There's no better or worse, simply because no set of ears is the same!
Hey Josh, once again thanks for another very informative and always entertaining presentation. This is a nice continuation of your blog about stacking preamps. As you just pointed out, both pre and post EQ (mid boost-mid scoop) are two wonderfully different animals that can help you do some radical tone sculpting. I could go on and on but I've spent 40 minutes already just for these few sentences. LOL, I don't know how you do all the things you do!
This is an amazing pedal I’ve been looking at it for years and decided to pull the trigger on it. I use it on my Rockerverbs clean channel where it doesn’t have a Mids knob. Blown away by this pedal and the sounds you can get out of it!
Glad I read before commenting as I had the same idea. It would be a much more versatile wah (I think) than anything else available. Idea is that the expression pedal would take the sweep pot out of the circuit (replace it) or be in addition to it? I think it has to replace it.
That's kinda what Electro-Harmonix did with the Deluxe Big Muff. You got an exp-in that allows you to sweep the mids. I think you can also set Q via a toggle on that pedal. In fact...the JHS pedal resembles that section of the Deluxe Muff in a few ways..it's spooky...one could even say haunting...
I know this is an old video but I just recently bought one of these. I place a Bozz GE-7 EQ at the beginning of my chain and then put the Haunting Mids after my drive section. I have a TON of tone shaping options this way.
Just got my hands on this pedal today. I have a earthquaker devices talons and Friedman Friedman be-od and absolutely love it!!! I run a wet dry wet rig using just one preamp from my Hughes and kettner tubemeister 40 deluxe into the returns of my other two amps. This is a game changer for anyone who has a large pedalboard with many pedals/amps. Buy it now and save yourself some major headaches!
Josh, this was a great video! I legit thought this pedal was stupid when it first came out, but now that you gave this overview - I totally see the application in expanding your entire drive section on your board. Really cool! I'm willing to admit when I'm a fool.
I’m gonna be honest. I will 300% buy the “scream, terror, & fright” version. I’ll study that manual i don’t care, I love that. I wish more companies took chances like that.
Great video Sir, watched yesterday & went on to buy one from True Tone in LA today. Very cool & unique tool, found it's juice very quickly with no hassle. Your vids, shared insights & application are really great! Keep em coming!
Really look forward to your vlogs each week . ..educational and entertaining . Will be getting one of these now that Long & McQuade here in Canada now sell JHS pedals . Awesome .
Question. Considering its creative ability to affect an overdrive pedal in different ways based on its placement either before or after and overdrive, have you considered making a 2-in-1 overdrive/haunting mids pedal that you can switch the order to be able to affect the OD in different ways by the use of the Haunting Mids before or after?
Josh, this is an amazing pedal and solved a lot of issues for me. I am in a acoustic band now and play acoustic guitar and this pedal solved my missing mids issue. I actually use it as a boost pedal for leads and tags. Setting up an acoustic pedalboard was a challenge in itself. Almost there. Ordering your Unicorn pedal now also for final piece of puzzle. Just a shout out for a life saving pedal that makes my Seagull sound amazing. I pair it with the EP boost and delay and just WOW. Thanks for making great pedals and hope to own a line up someday. Best to you, G.
I put a boosted mid-range (either with an EQ, or something like a tube screamer) before a Muff and it gives it a "dimed-stack". I actually used that for my high gain tone for a while, especially with single coils. It's how I used to get my "Comfortably Numb" lead.
If anyone here has a newer Proco Rat you’ll be happy to know that it glows in the dark! I ended up putting extra coats on it so that it glows way longer! 🤘👺
I was considering getting one of these and using it in the effects loop of my Guytron GT100 amplifier. I love the sound of the drive channel on this amplifier however it does not seem to have quite enough mid frequencies for cutting through the mix.
That's why i use an eq pedal after the big muff. It's a great tool for shaping your tone. Also a treble booster into a big muff works great to cut through the mix..
This is the first (hopefully of many) JHS pedals I've purchased. I've gigged with it as a mid boost for solos and for clean parts that need a little help. By extension it is also one of the reasons I've gotten into building pedals myself. I'm on a big fuzz kick right now and I can't wait to try some of my own creations in line with this pedal.
thanks!! I have a spark mid boost that's great but only 1 low and 1 higher freq.can be pushed..looking forward to getting this to go with my new angry Charlie :)
I just love my haunting mods pedal. I used it in my effects loop on my lead channel in my Mesa roadster to add mids to get it to sing. Thanks for the perfect pedal🤘
Vlog 12 - Still hooked. Totally impressed with how much better I understood the new (?) pedal in this casual, conversational format. In Vlog 10 we looked at that programmable EQ in the Texas Shop. Other than not having more than one setting (excluding bypass), this appears to do what I would need even better. Also. Ghost 👻.
What an Awesome Video extremely informative with the pre and post examples! ..really helped! Will definitely look at purchasing one of these to help me cut through the mix in a live situation.. Top work mate!
Perfect for my fuzzface! Mine is the germanium one with the nkt-275 transitors and this will definitely help with a little extra mids to cut through the mix. Thanks josh! You make such great pedals and I look forward to every video you post 😁
I really enjoy your VLOGs...I’ve known for a while that you produce awesome pedals. In watching these videos, I feel like I’ve gotten to know you a bit. That is often a deciding factor when I choose to make a purchase from a company. There are so many good builders, but when I feel a connection to a personable, engaging business, I pull the trigger and rest assured I spent wisely. That’s the reason I buy from D’Addario, Ernie Ball, Way Huge, MXR, EXH. And now, I’ve decided to join the JHS family. Deciding which pedal will be my first will prove to be more difficult. Time to make a list, I suppose. Thanks, Josh. Cheers from Maryland.
I love this pedal, got it last year and run it post all my drives, it's a super handy tool One suggestion I would make (perhaps for v2) would be to allow the volume and/or sweep pot to be controlled by expression pedal, that would make it a rad Wah or a transparent volume pedal I also would love to see some freq written on the sweep control, so I can know which freq's I'm boosting
I've been looking for something like this for a long time. I have a JHS AT pedal that is my main drive pedal. After watching this I went and found a new one on ebay, which I bought and is on it's way as I type. Now I can get rid of the Furman PQ-3 I was using for the same purpose, and no more rack mount with it's long ass patch cords.
Here's a midnight idea I had while watching. For a customizable 2-in1 pedal ala' SteakNEggs, StateLine, Milkman, Shotgun, SweetTea, etc. One could choose ANY 2 JHS single effects to be housed in a single 2fer box with an order toggle. Technically I do not know if this will work, so maybe just a few circuit options to choose from. We could have you create a Morning Glory with a Bomb Boost, or a Moonshine and Lil Foot Fuzz, or Haunting Mids and Muffletta! A SpringTank with a SpringTank! Add in color and finish options. I bet there would be demand and maybe spark interesting ideas. I can also assume I wouldn't be able to afford such a pedal but it would be awesome to dream up ideas.
I never saw this video before. And now I NEED this pedal. I love you, dude. I own waaaaayyyyy too many of your pedals. If you are ever sitting around and thinking, "I wonder who will buy this pedal?" It is probably me. As I seem to like the audio things that others do not like as much. I am "that guy" who is not big on the most popular thing. It just will not do for me what it seems to do for everyone else, but then I will find a use for something obscure that like sold five units and three of them were returned. And I own two of them. I NEED this. lolol You should sell a line of autographed pedals with like limited numbers, or something exclusively on your website or something. I would but them. Autographed posters and such. There are nerds out there who would climb over themselves for these things. I know, I am one of them. Love your stuff, sir. Thanks!
Big fan of your videos and pedals! So I've been planning to get one of these for a couple months now. I play Orange micro, and tiny terrors. So I don't really have an eq on my amps, and my overdrive is a EQD Speaker Cranker, which also doesn't really have an eq. I love the tone but it definitely lacks in mids for my taste. So i intend to use it to add mids to my amp, and than drive it with the Speaker Cranker! Simple stuff!
was very happy that you went through this process with designing this pedal. i wish i knew what all of those capacitors worked and what they do in the pedal. I just started as a retailer at a music store and we do stock JHS pedals! I'll have to check it out whenever we get one in. Great vid josh! :) \m/
I have a 91 Clapton Strat with the active mid boost. That guitar is pretty mythical, people still obsess over the mid boost. It's definitely useful on a strat.
Just got the Haunting Mids today for my bass. Running my Schecter 4-string into a JHS Whitey Tightey compressor, into the Haunting Mids, and then into a JHS Morning Glory with the Red Remote. Sounds fantastic! Thanks for making some great pedals.
Hey Josh!! In your last vlog about boosters you changed my mind about the way I see boost pedals. I guess I´ll have to check out the haunting miss and get a bigger pedalboard!!! God bless!!
awesome! Sounds like something I need! But you definitely missed an opportunity to label the volume knob "BOOst".
lol, dang.
JHS Pedals that would have been epic. I like the shirt for it. On your site, it looks like it comes with it but my guess is not.
Give this man a job!
will work for pedals.

Just got mine today. You've got no idea how helpful this is with a deluxe reverb with no mids option and with stacking drives.
Ran this into a Twin profile on my Tonex One. I added just some slight midrange into it and it was awesome.
I will try it AFTER my Metalzone....to put the scooped mids back in it!....$cary!! 🤘💀🤘
Haunting Mids Version 2 definitely needs an expression jack for the sweep control. Sounds great man!

That´s actually one of the most useful pedal concept ever!
I’m an EQ pedal nut. Been using the Diamond boost. Need to try a Haunting mids. 👍
Love the video... good explanation of what it does, hears it and wasn’t too crazy about it on some run-of-the-mill demos. Little more intrigued now.
Glad it's back been on the hunt for one
It is very simmilar to the extended mid EQ section in the Crown Jewel pedal by BYOC, and is one of the most useful things for overdrive
I loooooove what it did to that fuzz pedal. Curious to know what it would do to my SL Drive.
Thank you you enjoyed the lesson.
was very happy that you went through this process with designing this pedal. i wish i knew what all of those capacitors worked and what they do in the pedal. I just started as a retailer at a music store and we do stock JHS pedals! I'll have to check it out whenever we get one in. Great vid josh! :) \m/
There will be a parts vlog some time.
Some of you are thinking “now I know who the DeBeers of Sovtek is”. Ok this pedal sounds great for my Deluxe Reverb!! Thank you.
Yes... I’ll buy one. And a t-shirt! I’ll use it post the Muffuletta.
Josh is just he coolest. I love these videos.
I have a 91 Clapton Strat with the active mid boost. That guitar is pretty mythical, people still obsess over the mid boost. It's definitely useful on a strat.
A popular buzz phrase "ice picky", truly my favorite :)
Another fun vlog!
I love the vibe of your vids , it's like watching a kid in a pete and pete episode talking pedals in his garage lol
Just got the Haunting Mids today for my bass. Running my Schecter 4-string into a JHS Whitey Tightey compressor, into the Haunting Mids, and then into a JHS Morning Glory with the Red Remote. Sounds fantastic! Thanks for making some great pedals.
Do you have any soundclips with it?
Hey Josh!! In your last vlog about boosters you changed my mind about the way I see boost pedals. I guess I´ll have to check out the haunting miss and get a bigger pedalboard!!! God bless!!
💪💪💪
Josh love your videos. Keep them coming. Your pedals are ok, too.
That future/past/present thing at the end blew my mind out
I need some Haunting Phat Mids for my Metal Zone pre-amp pedal. doh!
Also, add it with the Boss HM-2
Awesome! That's how I use the Boss PQ-4
