Haha this is one of the most brilliant songs I ever heard by Dream theater.. The mixture of songs composed together.. Fucking hell!! These musicians aren't from earth. The most gifted creative musicians.
Dream theater is such a powerful band, not only because musically they are extremely impressive, but lyrically their songs are so real. The reality that everyone deals with their sins whether it be alcoholism or something else, and eventually has to answer for them in some way is a powerful message.
At that point he introduces some musicality and some improv like Portnoy would always do. In other words, he does not play like the fine tuned metronome does he is generally.
All these people complaining about Portnoy being gone, get over yourselves. I'll be the first to admit, MP was a huge inspiration to me when I started playing. He's the reason I started playing with a double pedal in the first place. But it was his decision to leave the band, and he was therefore replaced. Mike Mangini is a drummer so technically sophisticated that he was given a spot as a member of Berklee's faculty despite having no degree in teaching, or even music for that matter. That school is taking enormous strides with it's faculty and students in showing the music world just what drummers can be capable of. Just look at Matt Gartska. That guy was taught by people like Mangini. As incredible of a rock drummer as Portnoy is, Mangini is an incredible drummer, period. On top of that, his dedication to Dream Theater is clear, he was practically in tears when he learned he got the part. Personally, the addition of Mangini to the band is going to really open up new possibilities for their style, and I think it possible that the new DT album is going to break whole new thresholds and set whole new standards for progressive metal as a whole, assuming Mangini gets more creative say in the writing process.
Say whatever you want. The Astonishing is one of the best albums ever written, and it wouldn't have existed without Mangini. I'll keep to mine, and you keep to yours, you horribly uncultured swine.
Just my opinion. Im a huge Dream Theater fan!! DT is one of my favorite groups of the past 20 years top 3. For me the lyrics in this song don't resinate . How do you expect me to get inside Mike Portnoy's brain and see his thoughts, you are the moron . Just because someone gives an objective opinion doesn't make it right to call someone a stupid name !!!! Cock smoke !!!
My friend introduced me to dream theater a year ago, I have been a huge fan ever since. I'm going to a concert in April, and the only thing I'm disappointed with is that I won't see this song and many of my other favorites preformed live.
+Daniel Davidson The Astonishing live is amazing! Just remember, come 10 years down the road, people will be jealous with envy that you got to witness an amazing event. Trust me, my friends are jealous that I got to see Metropolis 2: Scenes from a Memory Live in concert!!!!!!
I went to the Astonishing live in Denver last May, and although I was disappointed I didn't get to hear DT's classics, it was still one hell of a show. I actually got introduced to DT though Rock Band 2 and I've been an avid fan ever since.
+Damian Sieradzki of course....he's replicating Portnoy! while in new songs he wrotes is cold as ice.I'm not saying he's a bad drummer, hellyeah NO!!!! he's cold, no emotion in his playing. MM keeps the time...MP PLAYS!!!!!!!!!!
Oh sh*&t I just threw up in my mouth.... Lars plays???? Are you high? Lars is light years below MP or MM, not even the same league, hell not even the same sport.
1:02 2:14 7:00 7:07 7:27 11:54 Mike fucking Mangini. You can't stop him. He's the most powerful drummer that I have ever seen and he would definitely demolish anybody who comes in his way.
Ron Mekarkash Too bad that Portnoy never want to play this song live. It taste better at live concert, because you know they don't record the song part by part on stage and it shows just how amazing they are alive. Studio record can lie to us at many things we heard, but when it comes to live recording, at least you can tell if you're not hearing what you're seeing. plus, If you said MP was the flavour, then DT has decided to change their recipe for sure.
I'd say the food tastes great. Mangini is an impressive player. It's just that MP cookbook was better, the creative spark has faded for sure. Greatly executed cooking, just bland recipes.
I really enjoy and love this "technical" music. Who say people can't enjoy "technical" & "math" music? I am really emotionally & sensationally touched by this song. They're greatest band ever.
I love this song so much, they killed it! Also I would love to hear them in a collaboration with a singer like Lione, the lyrics of this song would fit him very nicely
I think the "Fortress" that this song is telling about is the "self" that was once cast in his self-importance has now been "shattered" and longs to change. The musical parts in this song are just big bonuses to the most important part, the lyrics. This is my no. 1 DT song. Fuck it. I'm tearing.
+Kevin James Stevens DT's whole Twelve-Step Suite (of which this song is a part) is about Mike Portnoy's struggle with alcoholism. So yeah, that's pretty much correct. Definitely one of my favorites, too. Rock on.
Holy fucking shit. Mangini is a fucking monster here, and Jordan too!
Haha this is one of the most brilliant songs I ever heard by Dream theater.. The mixture of songs composed together.. Fucking hell!! These musicians aren't from earth. The most gifted creative musicians.
If you think this is impressive, try classical music composers. That's where the art of composing really shows.
Mangini=Rambo on Drum.
Oh yes, he's a genius. Plays parts with only one stick that others couldn't play with two.
11:54 one hand
+Marco M. (ƒяαηκεηsςнαεδεl) you re right. He is faster. But he can't wear portnoy's shoes. Never.
No he won't but he's an Amazing drummer tho.
Damn right!
Single handed so Nice and Flawless!
Dream theater is such a powerful band, not only because musically they are extremely impressive, but lyrically their songs are so real. The reality that everyone deals with their sins whether it be alcoholism or something else, and eventually has to answer for them in some way is a powerful message.
Rudess and Mangini are amazing here ! Keep playing like that, Mangini !
Everyone talks about Petrucci or Mangini... but man... Jordan Rudess is the one who gets everyone's attention during his solo... what a performance!!!
John Petrucci has the most beautiful guitar of the world!
He is a genius!
Dream Theater, best band ever!
+Gabriel Menezes Oh how I covet that seven-string of his! Beautiful instrument indeed.
Ok ET
James LaBrie has an amazing voice!!!
11:05 oh man thanks james i didn't know who that guy was
Holy shit, Jordan's solo kicked so much ass.
James at 12:16 hit the air crash!! ;) FANTASTIC!
3:51 What an awesome sound on John's guitar at this heavy section!
11:54-11:58 one of the best drum fills ever!
wow your right!
This is just sick.
a virada que ele dá em 7:26 também é sensacional
6:45 is a good moment in Jordan's solo
Wow! Mangini is awesome in this song!
That's like saying your ex's new boyfriend is good at boning her. DT shouldnt play any of theb12 Step Suite without Portnoy.
7:07 freakin beast!
7:26 yeah Mangini!!! You finally catch the point!!!
what do you mean?
At that point he introduces some musicality and some improv like Portnoy would always do. In other words, he does not play like the fine tuned metronome does he is generally.
@@philip-edwardphillis4313 ja ja ja, The músic is a world with a lot of island
Jordan is a fucking mad scientist!
ossibossi100 no, he's a wizard. Scientists are logical and go with what's real. Jordan goes beyond that.
I'm so thankful this band exists
Me too brother.
5:39 -> LOL moment of Mangini. hahaha
Those Mangini one hand blistering rolls are just beyond bad ass. Lol. Just too good.
That Jordan Rudess solo was something out of this planet!
El solo de Jordan Rudess te pone la piel de gallina. Espectacular.
What a great song, to finish the suite!
Finally they perform this beast of a song live!! I've been waiting so long for this!
Hahahah I know!
Not worthy without portnoy
Holey shit. Mangini let the monster out of the bag on this one........... brilliant!!!
These guys play some of the most difficult riffs imaginable, with absolute ease.
All these people complaining about Portnoy being gone, get over yourselves. I'll be the first to admit, MP was a huge inspiration to me when I started playing. He's the reason I started playing with a double pedal in the first place. But it was his decision to leave the band, and he was therefore replaced.

Completely agree with everything said here. :)
The astonishing is fucking awesome!
Flagnar agree with otnamkus secreted or madara uchiha? XD
I tried to like The astonishing. I have thus far been unable to listen to it more than twice. Am I missing something? Like does it grow on you?
I just came out of jail and this is the song I so badly needed to hear. Thank you DT, thank you so much.
what happened?
I added hours to my time sheet, and my boss decided to call the police on me.
Lyrics by Mike Portnoy, thanxs Portnoy , you are the best !!!
Im a huge DT fan, but I think the lyrics to this song are lame..Look in my eyes what do you see?? Its kinda empty
Randy Chotin i think the lyrics are meaningful a lot to me :/
You're a moron who cant see what Protnoy was Talking about
Just my opinion. Im a huge Dream Theater fan!! DT is one of my favorite groups of the past 20 years top 3. For me the lyrics in this song don't resinate . Dan Mulcahy lol chill dude
My friend introduced me to dream theater a year ago, I have been a huge fan ever since. I'm going to a concert in April, and the only thing I'm disappointed with is that I won't see this song and many of my other favorites preformed live.

Yes I saw them live. Amazon concert

9:56 God speaking
master mangini is destroying the drum
Holy shit, MM destroyed the kit
Nicolas Arango Indeed. He FINALLY showed some emotions.

Ron Mekarkash Too bad that Portnoy never want to play this song live. Studio record can lie to us at many things we heard, but when it comes to live recording, at least you can tell if you're not hearing what you're seeing. plus, If you said MP was the flavour, then DT has decided to change their recipe for sure.
I agree with every word you said Sir!
Daniel...each to his own taste.
I'd say the food tastes great. Mangini is an impressive player. It's just that MP cookbook was better, the creative spark has faded for sure. Greatly executed cooking, just bland recipes.
Phenomenal.
