    • @lorenzorodriguez4194
      @lorenzorodriguez4194 8 років тому +95

      Its not playback but i saw a video where they explained that. I mean when they mix a live concert video they remove the errors and fill in the studio the parts that are not correct. You can check in any fan live video and you will notice some errors. But if you check a video released by the band, no mistakes can be seen or heard. Theres nothing wrong with that. Its the band desire to give a good product.

      Burak Mete My theory is that Portnoy is primarily responsible for the way the band sounds since the turn of the century (I mean that heavy metal stuff that the band adopted from the Train of Thought). And since LaBrie´s poisoning his voice was no longer to sing metal as he did in Awake for example. That is LaBrie forced to sing in a way that harmed his voice even more. And after MP's left (in ADTOE, the self-titled album and in live performances) James sings different than the previous albuns. This is what I think...

  • @denergodok
    @denergodok 10 років тому +253

    Okey, just listen folks. What are you all complaining about really? First of all, remember that they're not like 20 years old anymore. Their age is spread from John Petrucci that is 46 (almost 47), to Jordan Rudess that is 57 years old. It's not bad at all that they keep playing at this level. You can't really complain about James LaBrie's voice either. He's 51 years old, and sings really amazing here. Remember that he struggled a LONG TIME with his voice after the food poisoning in '94. And what you really should think about, is that they have played together in this band for ALMOST 30 YEARS now.
    It's Mike Portnoy's own fault that he's not playing in the band anymore. Mike Manghini is doing a GREAT job here. Remember that his first album was meant for him to be like a "warm up" for him, so he could get to know the band better, to get the feeling of how it is to play with the band and to tour with them. John Petrucci wrote the drumnotes for his first album, and Mangini's job was to record what was written on these notes (with a certain level of improvisation).This album on the other hand, is more serious. Now he's a fulltime bandmember. But you should all keep in mind that he's their newest member, and that it's the first album he's deciding everything himself. Give him some more time to play with the band, because I'm certain that it's from now that you will know the reason why he became the new drummer. It's from now on that he finds himself upon all this and finds his way to go in the band. He's a REALLY good drummer, that is playing different from all other drummers. He has a certain way to do things that no one else have.
    And a last thing. Remember that the band have gone through A LOT of changes since Mike Portnoy left the band. Portnoy was in a way the foundation of the band, and when he left, they had to reorganize the whole band. They need to try out new things, and find out what they like - and of course what you, the audience, like. It's not easy for them to keep the balance right between them and the audience.
    Instead of just complain about what you don't like, show your support to them. Of course you can tell them what you don't like, but also tell them what you DO like. Then it's way easier for them to find out what direction they want to go further, and they get to know their fans better too.

    by the way...james is bloody AMAZING here...he can't hit the notes with as much force as he did before the food poisoning incident but at 50 something, he probably wouldn't be able to anyway...for his age, the amount of touring they do and the range he consistently stays in, you couldn't ask for much better really...killer stuff, james...

    Listen everyone, if the drum-kit here on this live had the same sound production than the one Portnoy had on all the DT live he has been doing (Portnoy always had a look over the sound of his drumkit when they were making a Live tape/dvd) , no one would be saying "this drummer is dead/flat etc ...", compare this video with an older live with portnoy, you will notice the snare and kick are always compressed, the snare drum is always tighten at max, and the drums are always louder than anything else !

    • @arrackattack
      @arrackattack 10 років тому +15

      Nowaday to clarify things, the only one who has an eye upon the whole mixing process is John Petrucci ! so Guitars : LOUDER everything else : quieter, that's why the drums are so dead here, cause everything was turned down, you can't even hear the damn kick drum, the sound has no depth, no resonnance, there is almost no EQ on the snare drum, all the toms are flat, due to the mixing, and the drum kit has nothing to do with that, i heard a Pearl reference before and these kits are freaking loud, tight with a lot of resonnance !

    • @isaac.chaves

      I am curious about this topic ... is Petrucci that selfish?

    • @danlc95
      @danlc95 2 роки тому

      Mangini always used to play really tight heads. Sometimes we can tighten them too much which can choke out the sound. I not sure, but that's what the sound reminds me of.
      I'm not hearing the initial strike of the stick hitting the head.
      Everything after this was better, possibly due to using a two ply head rather than the single layer he uses here. The two ply Remo Emperor helps articulation.
      I was expecting Mike to play Remo Pinstripes because all his pics around the entry to the band showed pins on the kit. I thought that he may have recorded with the pins on ADOTE, but have no way of knowing.

      I love being able to hear the guitar, keys, and bass with Mangini. They were hard to hear with Portnoy blasting his rlkkrlkkrlkk over the them.
      It's a lot more difficult to do what Mangini is doing with the material, playing precisely with the runs, and supporting the music, rather than riffing over it - which for drummers is a lot of fun to do, but boring for people to have to endure most times.

Pathetic. And for the record, James sounds pretty awesome for a 50 year old who still hits all the notes without drop tuning the songs :)
