- ⛵ Sailing in the furious fifties - Join us as we cross the Scotia Sea from the Falkland Islands at 52˚ South to the remote, volcanic South Sandwich Islands at 59˚ South on a film and science expedition aboard Skip Novak's expedition sailing yacht Pelagic Australis. This is Part I of the five week expedition. Part II will follow next week! :)

We left Stanley in the Falkland Islands just after Christmas in December 2019 and sailed across 1200nm of wild Southern Ocean to drop our anchor on the shores of the remote South Sandwich Islands, which lie within the Antarctic Convergence Zone. Our first stop was Saunders Island. From here we sailed South to Bellingshausen and Southern Thule, where we reached our most southerly point at 59˚S. Heading North again we stopped at Candlemas Island and admired the hostile Zavodovski Island and its rugged cliff shore line.
The time flew by and we could have easily stayed much, much longer! But with bad weather on its way we hoisted the sails and set course for South Georgia. Watch Part II of this expedition to find out more! :)

@rimas thank you for replying all the way from Hawaii! I'm very glad you enjoyed the films and hope you get to see our next one which will be released in approx 2 weeks :)) Sophie
An excellent video about an excellent boat. I watched a few videos about the systems onboard Pelagic Australis, one of which was hosted by Skip Novak, so I was curious about your video too! Such a well thought out boat and I like the emphasis on comfort and warmth as being related to 'safety' onboard. Plus, the layout of the cockpit, the winches, the offset anchor, and the use of multiple head-sails on furlers, ready to be either furled or unfurled. I've raced a couple of cutter rigged boats in Alaska and having that additional sail that's smaller and closer to the mast moves the center of effort aft and toward the center of lateral resistance in heavy weather. I own a Catalina sailboat that's used for and rigged for high latitude sailing (Juneau, Alaska is at latitude 58) and I've been past icebergs, seals, humpback whales, Orca's, and more so I appreciate Pelagic and the emphasis on safety. First rule on my boat is 'don't fall overboard' and the second rule is 'don't fall overboard'. Thanks for the great video and for the inside look at your adventures!
Outstanding...nice work, nice footage, nice narration..
Hi Frans,
Thank you very much for your comment and for supporting us by you 'like'! We really appreciate it!
Part 2 will be out tomorrow...:))

What a cold adventure, but well worth it I bet. Thanks for sharing, watching from Canada.
Thank you for watching all the way from Canada! You must be used to this cold weather!
Sophie :)
Fabulous, love the penguins. Andy UK
Thank you so much for this. If only your videos were hours long! I could watch that sea and those landscapes all day, and of course everyone's activities, optimism, and positive vibes despite the difficulties and discomfort at times (amazing what modern technology has done for this kind of adventuring). So well edited and beautiful music as well. My favorite sailing channel. And best wishes on your next leg.

I live full time on my boat, but this is a whole other world. Kudos
Hello! Well there is always a lot of respect for anyone living on a boat! So sending that kudos right back at you too! :)) Sophie
Remarkable part of the world that we rarely see footage of. Thanks for that.
Hi Alan, thank you for your comment! Have you watched Part 2? We really appreciate any feedback as we are new to filming and making short documentaries :))
@@seasandsummits Yes, I made a comment on part 2 also. Your films are captivating as the locations are so extreme and the wildlife so fascinating. I know nothing about the technicalities of camera work and production and, of course, there are more "polished" looking sailing channels. But they're seldom bracing themselves against the kind of seas you guys are! I think your film making is terrific given the environment you're working in. I've watched a few videos on heavy weather sailing by Skip Novak (a series that was sponsored by a marine insurer), and it was fascinating. Seems you get to work with fantastic groups of people.
Your trips are so unique and interesting. Thanks for sharing with us :)
Hello!
Thank you, we have part 2 out tomorrow. I hope you get a chance to watch it and see new places we visited:)
Many thanks again,
Sophie
@@seasandsummits Im looking forward to it.
All that beautiful ocean water yet, you can't go swimming. Cuz it will kill you, being so cold 🥶
BTW, great 👍 video!
Hi Steven!
We did take a polar plunge but that will be out in our Antarctic film in the next couple of months! Yes it was indeed very, very cold!
Thanks again,

Best sailing channel yet!
Ah thank you,
That's very kind of you to say:))
That was beautiful, sailing and nature in all it´s splendor! As someone from 59 North, I´m ever so glad we have the gulfstream up here in scandinavia, I don´t think I´d like the conditions down where you are for very long. It is gorgeous and avesome, but not so that I would want to live there! 😉 Looking forward to part two with great anticipation, untill then: Fair winds and following seas!
Hi Klas,
Thank you for your comment and it's great to hear from someone as far north as 59 degrees! You must be used to these cold temperatures!

Ahh nice man. Good to see the real deal. Just soloed 1000 miles. Intense .
Another fantastic journey to places which after 60 years of sailing, I still wouldn't dare to sail! So many thanks for taking me there with you! I just wish that you would post the much longer unedited version for those like myself who would like to see more of the detail and spend an hour or two watching!
You also mentioned that Skip was there, but it seems that he's staying clear of the camera! Why?
Hi Paul,
Thank you for your message. 60 years of sailing deserves a huge amount of respect! Initially we hadn't intended on making films, I just took footage of things I thought I would send back to my family. Then my Dad put the South Georgia film together and we saw how much people have enjoyed it. So a lot of our footage was very shakey and limited for that reason, hence not being very long. However, we've been filming much more and with the help from some of the film teams we've had a long the way!
Tomorrow Part 2 will be out on UA-cam- it's much longer- I hope you get a chance to enjoy it- let us know what you think!
Oh yes, Skip was very happy to appear in the footage, but I didn't want to put the camera in front of people too much. I was a bit nervous about that. Now we feel more comfortable about filming people we hope to have more footage. We are heading to Marion Island with Skip in the next few weeks- so I will be sure to get him on camera more this time!
I hope that makes sense!
Many thanks for your comment- and again, lots of respect to you for all your years on the water.
KInd regards,
Sophie

You will like the documentary "following seas"
There is no greater adventure I would want to participate in than any one of these Pelagic sailing trips. I've done a lot of cool and "out there" things in life, but the opportunity to sail with this crew in a high latitude venture is at the very top of my interests.
Hello! That is very kind of you to say:))
We have just bought our own steel yacht and plan to return to these high latitudes on her. We are conjuring up ways to share this opportunity with others too :)
So stay tuned 🙂

Thanks both for showing us your world. What is the reason for the shackles for the genoa sheets at the bow?
Hey! We have 3 headsails on furlers and to keep the sheets out of the way of the other sails when they are not in use, we clip them onto the pulpit with the carabiners :)
