From my experience, best to use a transparent holding box (those breeding boxes) placed in the middle of the tank. The old tank inhabitants are more likely to show their aggression towards the fish thinking they can "get" to the fish (because of the box transparency). They do it again and again until they give up. I did this introduction method since I lost my wrasse many years ago (after exhaustive quarantine, getting the fish to eat and all, it was such a sad sight to see the fish getting stressed out and finally succumbing). I found the holding box method to be the best. Most holding boxes have holes all around and I always feed the new fish first (by using a long pipette). I think the other fishes start to think "Oh, this new guy gets fed first?! He must be important!" LMAO. I do this for a minimum of a week, and then slowly "release" the fish (by opening the lid of the box) when all the fishes are being fed. The old tank inhabitants and the new fish all start eating together.
This video was so timely. I recently added a Tomini tang to my tank and (I believe) my Flame Hawkfish has been taking some bites out of his fins. The Tomini doesn’t seem stressed at all, but his fins got pretty tattered the first few days. I just rearranged the rocks yesterday and have been feeding 2-3x times per day; I’m hoping that will be enough to settle them down.

Had a chance to get over to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium and they had some great exhibits of some Caribbean corals and fish, have you ever been there? And I must add that the black tang in that aquarium is probably my favorite fish in your whole studio, it is just so majestic!!
I haven't been to Mote but always down for some nice Caribbean exhibits. The black tang is one of the few NAMED fish in the Studio and his is DMX and he's like 16 years old and a perfect aquarium fish
You know I always wait for ich to appear before treating with copper but pretty much all fish headed for the fish tank have to get at least one Praziquantel treatment.
what is your qt procedure please .. do you always deworm and if so what products do you use.. do you empirically treat woth copper too. thanks in advance .
Really love your page brother. I currently have a 40 cube with well established refugium, plenty of coral, couple of clown fish, Anthias and Some damsels. I use tap water LOL and rarely do water changes LOL. I’m in the process of buying a home and I would really love to get something larger 200-300gallon. Any advice? I’m stuck between doing a reef tank with a bunch of acros and large aggressive fish like puffers, triggers and groupers
Man those are opposite extremes, hard to know which way to steer you, but I think if you REALLY wanted to do an Acro tank you'd already know that's what you want to do, does that make sense? Fish don't have to be large and aggressive to be great fish tank candidates also, lots of large angels, tangs and some wrasses would be equally as nice, perhaps even easier than aggressive fish that need to eat a lot

The acrylic and transparent mesh meant that they had full visibility accross. I once added a Copperband Butterfly and kept him isolated in the tank for one whole month. During that time my Powder Blue paid him zero attention. Not even a fin flare and they would stand inchs from each other without any signs of aggression. As soon as I removed that screen one month later the Powder Blue went straight for the copper band and killed him.
I'm sorry to hear about how things went down for you - it's true that the acclimation/divider method works to a point - one time I isolated a new angelfish from another one and when the divider was removed, the alpha fish lost his mind and went rogue on a completely different fish that had been established in the tank for years, took me totally by surprise

Was hard to watch... We always feed before release and maybe a bit extra after to distract, through-out day... Dimming lights helps as you mentioned, but Surgeon can get extra territorial at dusk, we devided for night and remove after their dawn. I do like comment below of using clear box method vs eggcrate for week prior - will be tried here.. Glad it worked-out for you Jake;) High risk with empty tummies..
Re funk in live rock, I just blast the rock weekly with a hand held utility power head- funk goes to filter sock. Also, I love my salt FOWLR, hated growing coral despite having considerable success. FOWLR only for some of us!
Question for JAKE: I keep two fish only saltwater fish tanks (a 90 and a 45) - Question: Can I rinse my ceramic bio-media in treated freshwater as part of my regular maintenance, or will the freshwater rinse kill the saltwater beneficial bacteria. Typically I rinse in my media in my tank water when I do my weekly water change, but I would really like to know if saltwater bacteria is that delicate that a freshwater rinse to remove funk from ceramic media would kill said bacteria.
You don't want to SOAK it in FW but a gentle rinse under the tap is perfectly fine, and once a year I aggressively spray down the ceramic biomedia I keep in the sump as well
I wonder if brighter lighting (reef level) could make the tank look the part. Even with the absence of corals there is a reason why some people use bright lights on fish only tanks.
I am actually trying that same approach as we speak. I added a scribble angel and she was being bullied by my blue face angel and purple tang. The purple tang and blue face are now in quarantine for a few weeks while the scribble gets comfy.

copper only if the fish has ich or very likely to, and definitely aim to deworm once sometimes twice with PraziPower

I have a dwarf fire angel and a maxima clam. Can they be together in a 250g tank? There is not much else in there as far as corals but other fish.
