Matty Harris is a music producer, mixing and mastering engineer from Boston. As a young musician, he won several awards, most notably, the best drummer in New England. He toured with jazz, blues and calypso bands, playing bars and clubs at the young age of 14. After High School, he attended Berklee College of Music where he studied Music Production and Engineering. Learning from some of the most accomplished producers and engineers in the industry. Since then, he has worked on countless records with such artist as; Atlantic Records, RCA Records, WB Records, Kelly Clarkson, Sammy Adams, A$AP Rocky, Logic, Lil Yachty, Cam Meekins, Just Juice, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, Fat Joe, Styles P, La Coka Nostra, and many more. He worked on the Grammy Award-winning song “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson and won the 2008 Boston Music Award for Best Hip-Hop/R&B Producer. He now lives in Los Angeles where he works with artists from all over the world helping them to realize their dreams.
Matty started his online mixing and mastering company, mixandmastermysong.com, with the vision of helping new artists get the same quality mixes and masters as the major label artists he works with. After realizing the advancements of technology, he knew it was time to launch his online mixing and mastering company when he no longer needed the effects of a “big room” studio to achieve high-end mixing and mastering.

    Here's another reason: PRICE!
    Studio One 3 $399 (unlimited tracks) (5 licenses = 5 computers)
    vs
Pro Tools $599 (limited to 128 tracks) (1 license that requires iLock for extra cost!)

You forgot to mention that protools and avid is just putting both hands in our pockets and that`s all they care about. These guys are not smart at all with even the subscription method when most other DAW are way ahead of them and people running towards them. Protools is a mess right now and no one can deny that.

    • @ilikemyrealname
      @ilikemyrealname 6 років тому +2

Small Axe MP There model rn is out of control while their software is lagging behind. Then their support is so abysmal, I’ve had to blast them publicly on FB to get them to reply after a week of contacting them everyday. It’s a mess over there in Avid land. Just paid my annual effin’ fee but looking for another DAW to eventually make the jump to.

Yeah my shit (pt12) wasn't working right after I let my subscription lapse so I decided to get a new yearly subscription last November. I'm pissed off. Needless to say before the subscription was up I switched to SOPRO3 and CubPro9

Actually even more insidious than that Sir...a good friend of mine (who'd spent about $80,000 building his studio) got his entire Server System totally locked up and unusable because of Avid's propriatary agenda. All from his updating his Pro Tools DAW. He'd already installed all the things he used for his production both hardware & software, and couldn't get it to open up.
He called Avid / Pro Tools for help and they just told him too bad.
So after rebuilding his Servers all over again, just went back to his older version of Pro Tools and everything worked fine all over again. He was PIIISSSED!

So, so happy that this video is even in existence!!! So many people WON'T think for themselves or outside the box and try other things. I've often said that ProTools wasn't the alpha and omega. Needless to say I got shot down quite a bit by folks who blindly followed the crowd.
When this first came out some 5 or 6 years ago, I knew this was destined for something big. I knew it would be a hard sell to get some folks to switch. But do people honestly think that EVERY song on the radio now was recorded with ProTools? (I guess many did.)
I recently upgraded to Professional since they had a half price holiday deal going. It's like I have a completely new DAW. I'm still learning all of the ins and outs but I love the flow of the program and the ease of drag and drop. Hopefully more folks will come on board and realize the amount of time they could save with this.
Again, I appreciate the video. Very good job!!!!

Nice video. I am a Pro Tools user but I had a chance to work on Studio One for a bit. It really is a great DAW and there is a good chance I will switch. Just the fact that you can load effects and virtual instruments while you're playing without the audio skipping is such a blessing. This annoys me in Pro Tools to no end.

Marin you wont regret it! Ive been using logic pro x for a while now, recently changed to Studio one profesional and im never looking back. Studio one doesnt have all those propietary restrictions and same platform bs that apple and logic pro x has, Studio one is alot more user friendly, intuitively easy to use and you dont need a $2K-4K macbook pro to get your work done plus studio one on windows is more versatile and works very well with alot of different type of files across different platforms that in Apple and logic pro x you would be restricted from or having to pay a stupid amount of money for software extension etc... Ive been using Studio One profesional together with Filmora pro to create youtube projects with recordings and wow the workflow is so smooth and easy to get you sharing your music or projects with the world instead of spending hours wrestling with your DAW now with Studio one Profesional you can actually focus on your music and get creative with your projects.

Awesome. I love Pro Tools because I know it so well, but this looks so convenient. I'll have to try it out.
Also in Pro Tools, you can click on a send, click New Track, and it will create all the busses for you :) this is still way easier, and so cool that you can click on any send and it'll bring up the plug rather than trying to find the aux.

Been using Studioone from day one, nothing is more quicker and simpler when it comes to producing & mixing. Instantly Bouncing/printing midi tracks with "B" key or duplicating with "D" just small but very effective features, plus the look of it is better than anything out there in the market. Another awesome feature is extracting a midi from a music loop via melodyne absolutely brilliant.

Yeah I just switched over after running PT 8LE for the last 7 years.
Program stability is great. VSTs are actually usable natively. No damn constant buffer under-runs. No out-of-the-blue error messages when everything was working fine before (this drive isn't fast enough to use as a recording volume, DAE can't get audio fast enough, this session was created in an earlier version of Pro Tools, etc). No having to disable your Wifi-card because it's causing clicks and pops in the recorded audio. Oh, and one other amazing feature (standardized in basically every other DAW out there)...
Automatic Delay Compensation. No more having to shift your bass tracks forward before bouncing. Offline bounce (not sitting through the entire song [and waiting for your audio device to crash] during renders). The ability to freeze track processing to perserve processing power. And also the ability to just export the stems. No more having to dig into your folder system to trash preferences every 3 days either.
    PT's the worst.

Happier with Studio One than I ever was with Pro Tools. I used Pro Tools since 1996. Switched to Studio One in in 2014. Kept PT in case someone wanted to work in Pro Tools, but a few months ago I told clients I don't work in Pro Tools at all anymore. I was afraid it would affect business, but it made no difference. I'm 100% Avid free and very happy about it, pumping out work more efficiently in a very versatile environment.

Hey! Get back here a suffer through PT like the rest of us who spent thousands of dollars and years mastering it (no pun intended) seriously I would miss my smart tool too much and I have melodyne 4 and can create tempo maps with or without it also I think one should learn the process and flow of returns and sends its kinda like the way "Smart Phones" are making us dumb! but then again you have folks who want quick and easy for everything and I get that but I find my creativity flows from my effort just like the thousands of hours I spent achieving my technical proficiency on guitar I love the ceremonial aspect of practice, creating music and the technical aspects of recording

Well explained! Love all the shortcuts and different things you can do with your controllers. Been using Pro Tools for recording and mixing for like 10 years, and Logic for songwriting and beat making sometimes. But really my beats are made with my Native Instruments MK2. The Maschine program is amazing for creating drums and beats. Haven't found anything that even comes close. Anyways, I actually graduated from Full Sail University a few years ago. They are all about Pro Tools. Everything is done thru Pro Tools, except for the few classes we had on learning a few other systems like Logic and UDK. In a studio setting though, I really prefer analog to digital. Being able to listen more, like you were saying, and staying creative. Really only using the DAW as multi-tracker while recording. Anyways, great job with your videos. Keep them coming. I already subscribed.
Also, do you work at a studio? Or are you independent cause I would love a chance to work together. Maybe even intern...

Great video. Would this software work well on a Windows 10 laptop, 6 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive, i5-4200U 1.60 GHz 2.30 GHz or should I upgrade? I'm sure upgrading wouldn't hurt, just curious if what I currently have will get the job done.

Hi I like your video, lately i'be been having troubles with protools in many ways and I was looking for on DAW that would help me migrate from protools to any other, but in the workflow that seems alike protools 12 . I want to ask you if the tools for editing, mixing and mastering in studio one 3 are really powerful ? Cause I was thinking in Tracking in studio one and then make mixing and mastering in protools, what do you yhink? Thx a lot for your help.

Have had my setup going for a while but about to start again. Can you edit in place with Melodyne in Logic like you just did in Studio one? Also, does Logic have anything like Vocalign?

I switched from my old Adobe Audition to Studio One 3... I'm a bit overwhelmed by it. It's very complex, and it seems to load up a bunch of plugins automatically; stuff I'll never use, like Melodyne. Even though I have a beastly computer, I get static noise when I try to do live monitoring, like my computer can't handle the load. And that's with just one VST loaded. I can have 5 times the number of FX loaded in Audition before it starts getting static. Is there any way to get a minimalist Studio One setup, without all the plugins loading automatically? Really frustrated with this software....

Pretty compelling video. That Melodyne and VocAlign integration looks killer!
The only negative comment I have is your description of setting up the reverb in Pro Tools. There is a MUCH quicker way to do it which doesn't take 3 minutes. In one move you can set up everything (the send, the new bus name and the return track) but it doesn't put the reverb itself on the Aux, so the S1 way is still a little quicker.
Studio One is very object oriented, like a video program and looks really enticing. My only problem with it when I demo'd it was that it appeared CPU heavy. I've heard several people agree with me on this, yet others say it's really cool and efficient. It might have a problem with only some types of processors?

    • @braunhausmedia
      @braunhausmedia 7 років тому

Studio One barely makes a dent on my CPU. Not sure where you're getting this information.

Your answer is in my original comment! It was my own experience when I ran the demo version for a few weeks. But others have confirmed this online yet some like yourself, claim to get amazing performance with it.
This is what's made me think there's something specious going on with it, where some systems struggle a little and others don't.

    • @braunhausmedia

Maybe the difference is I'm using a Mac.

    • @MichaelCosta_
      @MichaelCosta_ 7 років тому +1

Well me too, but mine's an old one - 2009 Mac Pro 4,1. I got similar performance to what I get with Pro Tools but Logic Pro X fairs significantly better.
If Studio One gave me Logic type performance, I'd probably buy it and invest the time to learn it properly.

I've purchased it also but for some reason my mixes don't sound as crisp... I think it's cause I've mastered all the tips/tricks in pro tools and I'm still learning this. Can you possibly do a video on mixing vocals or little tips? I'd love to see that.

Will this allow you to use EastWest Play as a plug in? I just spent hours trying to load it into ProTools 12 tinkering with installs/uninstall finding out it's actually AAX not VST. They said it should still work but.. the hassle is ridiculous and hardly straight forward.

Can you do group editing of multiple drum tracks in Studio 1 as it can be done in Cubase which maintains the phase/timing relationships between the individual drum tracks when making timing related edits? Thanks.

  • @BOSSSHAWN

It all depends on what you're doing. Some DAW's specialize a little more in a mixing / vocal recording / mastering environment. (Pro Tools).....Then others are more of a producers Software (Reason, FL Studio, Maschine)......Then some can kind of do it all. If you're a producer and mix / master engineer you'll probably have at least two DAW's. I've used literally every DAW except some like BITWIG and Reaper. Some of the best all around do it all DAW's are Studio One, Sonar, Logic Pro, Samplitude, Digital Performer and Cubase.....Any one of these DAW's will get you from production to master. I personally like Studio One and Sonar the best followed by Logic Pro (only because I've used it the least, but plenty of great music is made on Logic Pro) These three DAW's I think are fantastic but honestly technology is pretty damn good these days and you can pretty much make great music on just about any DAW. I say find the one you feel comfortable with and master it because they all do some pretty good things.

Well a Producer is some one that directs and oversees the entire song creation process all the way through the mix that works closely with the Vocalist and Engineer in the studio as they are similar to a director in a movie. Beat Making is an entire different role from producing which is called Composing or Programming. In Hip Hop you are a combination of a Record Producer that controls the recording sessions and a Programmer that composes the musical track like your Teddy Reily, Pharrell, Dre. They all work with an Engineer that runs Protools. You can make beats with just about anything, hardware, software etc.

Just got it. The Pro version for $199.00 on sale from their web site; I am trying to learn it; I will try mixing my drums, doing my own minus ones videos from some songs /i used to play back in the day; using it to record them drums, the track with the minus one and different video angles from 4 different cameras..now the fun part, other than play them drums I have no clue how to do any of this..I just feel it is something i would like to do and have been stocking on what I may need to accomplish it. The board I will use to send the mix from analog to DAW is a Yamaha TF1..yes I know I can record directly to USB from the board itself everything but mixing should give me more control on the especifics..or so I think. It is a process to learn all a recording software can do, once i learn it, it may do more than just have fun with it, who knows!

Question, I noticed that the edit tool is mostly similar to what's in Pro Tools (watching you draw a fade early in the video) but it seems there is a slight difference that has me thinking about editing large projects or large number of large projects. It has to do with top right corner region hovering (or top left if you're drawing a fade at the beginning of a region/clip). In Pro Tools the edit tool has a hover area. You hover for example at the top right corner and the edit tool turns to fade. That hover region is actually perfect size. You can kind of be imprecise with your mouse and because the area is a hover area and is a good size.
I noticed when you were drawing a fade in Studio One you had to get your mouse exactly on the corner of the region (top right). Am I seeing this correctly? Does studio one require you to precisely line up your mouse with the top right or top left corner of the region in order to be able to draw a fade? Or does it follow a kind of hover area approach like Pro Tools?
If former I would venture a guess that Pro Tools would still be a better choice for me. A hover region approach would be faster I think. And when you're talking about lots of large projects that would add up in terms of time. Trying to line up a mouse is always fiddly so am wondering if this is the case in Studio One?
    Thanks.

Coming from using Logic Pro for 6 years and completely mastering it, but having to switch to PC due to me not wanting to be stuck into Apples eco-system for just that one piece of software. I've been searching for a new DAW to use. I took for granted all of Logic's incredible editing/mixing/ features that other daws just don't have. I've been testing Ableton out for the past 3 months and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT!!! everytime i find one thing i like about it that Logic doesn't have, I find 5 things that it can't do that Logic was able to do in 2 seconds like Creating VCA Faders, actually having Busses, creating Notes inside the session, sidechaining from any audio/midi source without having to create a whole new Send/Audio/Midi track. I knew i didn't want to use old dinosaur technology *cough*ProTools*cough, so i decided to look up Studio One 3 which i've been hearing a lot of good things about. Now i just landed on this video and this just made up my mind. it has all the features that i missed from Logic + some extra's that i didn't even know it could do but it makes so much sense and i know will save time. Thank you for this quick video that got straight to the point and showed real practical daily scenerios we come across when working with audio. Peace

JEFFMAN90 I hope is not to late, Fl studio and ableton are not 100% made for mixing or voice recording, Fl studio doesn't handle audio too well, and ableton is good, but the best option if your looking for a daw that does everything perfectly, Studio one is for you, My first daw was fl and i used it for 5 years, Then I switched to ableton live and didn't like the workflow for mixing, and I'm currently using and loving S1, so, Good luck buying the right one for you!

Hi, great video. I'm just thinking about leaving Pro Tools and getting started with Studio One. I have a question, because I have Avid MBox 3 interface and I wonder if I could use it with Studio One? Will all AAX plugins need to be uninstalled and reinstalled in VST format? I've had enough of Avid's policy, they don't have any support at all if you don't buy a subscription for a year, and it only costs ... £ 300, so it's better to cut myself off from future costs in the future .. Please answer if you find a time. Cheers.
