      Moved from PT to S1 almost 2 years ago and never looked back! Now on version 4 and its absolutely fantastic. There's only one thing that i miss from PT though, AudioSuite! I know S1 has Event Fx but i know most people like me who migrated from PT need something that works jus like AudioSuite. Can't wait to see PreSonus introduce something like that in the future updates. Nice Video Ryan. Come to the dark side! 😀

      I started with Reaper, which was ok (again, this is many years back) but when I bought the Presonus AudioBox interface it came with the Artist version of Studio One. I upgraded to Pro and never looked back. Very easy to use.

    I recently ditched the Mac after decades use to PC so I had to give up Logic Pro X. I looked at all the DAWs and concluded Studio One 4 was the best one to migrate over. Well after several months use Studio One 4 has exceeded my expectations its really intuitive and easy to figure out and start being productive quickly.

    Presonus hired the original team that created Steinberg Cubase. They left when Yamaha bought Steinberg that is why it is a lot like Cubase. The original programmer who designed Cubase created StudioOne. If anyone wanted some history. Love you guys.

    Been using it since version 1. It's much more than "a DAW that takes this and that from another DAW", Studio One has established many things we consider obvious now that other DAWs took from it too. It's great and it literally changed the game ever since it came out.

    As a home recording hobbyist that has tried REAPER, Studio 1, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Cubase, MixBus and Guitar Tracks I have come to the point that I think the most important thing is to really learn one or two very deeply as opposed to the basics of all.

    • @dchristo10
      @dchristo10 6 років тому

      I use and like Mixbus, but I wouldn't use it if I used MIDI instruments as it's not strong in that area. It's great as an audio recorder which is all I want. It's inexpensive to purchase but doesn't come with a lot of plug-ins. Mixbus plug-ins are very good but if you already have a good collection of VST plug-ins, you can import and use them. I've tried to like Reaper, but I just find myself ignoring it after a day or two. I used to use Sonar for years (started at 2.0) and liked it until it became a bloated mess.

    7:20 Yes you can! Logic has exactly the same thing, it’s called the Step Editor.
    You also have 2 other ways to edit velocity, there’s a Velocity Tool that can be used in the Piano Roll itself. You can also edit the velocities in the Controller under the Piano Roll.
    Although I’m a proud Logic Pro x user, I’ve always been intrigued by Studio One.

    I downloaded the demo. Like you say...it's so intuitive, and I fell in love with it instantly. The pattern editor blew me away with its simplicity and power. The way clone blocks work etc is something that took me by surprise but quickly became part of my workflow. It's insane and this software has got me excited again. It's an enabler that you barely notice and that's what you need.
    10 days before the demo ran out I've just gone and bought it.

    Im happy this gets your stamp of approval. Studio one was my first real DAW; I switched to Ableton a long time ago but I still have fond memories of It. Lately I found PreSonus is offering cross upgrade for Studo one 4 Pro from all past versions. It’s 150 but I’m so excited to potentially reunite with Studio one (and actually know what to properly do lol)
    Much respect Ryan 🤘

    Interesting how you didn't get a long with pro tools when I'm seeing SO MANY similarities between this and PT.
    Everything from the ease of I/O setup, to sends and plug ins, to midi notes customisation and velocity changes it's pracitcally the same.
    I''ve only ever used PT, I've dabbled in Ableton and Logic and the studio I work in is looking to get Studio 1 for the ease of functionality and having devoted hardware. I'm excited to give this a go especially when I see so many similarities to what I know in PT.

      Yes, you would need to expand the mixer and drag and drop the plugin on the mixer or the console. The plugin (s) will be available on the mixer screen. Once displayed on the mixer window, single click and the plugin will display on the screen. Let me know if you're able to do it. I will be glad to provide additional info if necessary.

    Been a fan of Studio One for about 5 years now. My biggest gripe was the sizeable drain on the CPU. About a year ago they added a new feature where you can adjust (min-max) this (buffer) with a quick couple clicks. Lots of updates and continuously making improvements. Started with Artist, then upgraded to Producer, and then finally Professional. The upgrades are reasonably priced, and the quality is exceptional.

    I've been using Studio one for well over a year now and I have absolutely no interest in switching to another daw. The biggest reason I went with studio one was the price. 400 bucks got me a fully featured, visually appealing, efficient and effective daw. Not too mention, free feature updates and Presonus is generous with giving away free plug ins. Definitely has earned the top spot in my list.

    • @mikejones-vd3fg
      @mikejones-vd3fg 6 років тому

      what about cakewalk which is free and offers some free amp sims and stuff, probably not as good as the free plugins as a paid 400 daw, but hey, if you get the basic platform for free? why not!

    • @marklr5716

    • @mikejones-vd3fg
      @mikejones-vd3fg 6 років тому

      Its a free version of the paid thing though, Cakewalk is like a paid version gone free with all the features. Even 3rd party amp sims form TH3 which are pretty good i have to say compared to the free plugins ive been using. I got a presonus interface, and I realy like it so I have no doubts their software is good too, but you cant compete with free, i think it'll take some times for the others to adjust by offering more in their paid packages. If I could afford it i would get FL studio however, just for the effects, which they also sell seperately so theres no point really in spending money on a DAW it seems unless you really like it.

    • @SoundFaithStudios
      @SoundFaithStudios 6 років тому +1

      mike jones everyone is always on a budget. I had to save for a few to be able to get studio one. Prior to studio one i had been using cubase le and pro tools 10 for a while. Let me tell you, there is more to a daw than its built in plug ins and virtual instruments. After using studio one, i would never go back to another daw for my personal use. Studio one is very streamlined in its UI which makes song writing easier and more efficient for me. Setting up a session is a breeze compared to others I've used. Midi is easy to edit as well. Bottom line is, if you're starting out and don't need the functionality of a quality daw to start, then anything free is better. Any money saved could be invested elsewhere. I also have a presonus interface, and it's integrated to work with studio one which adda to the convenience.

    The quickest way to ad plugins in Studio One is to open the Browser and drag and drop them directly into your insert bay. With sends, you can do exactly the same! Grab your fave reverb, drop it on a send, and Studio One creates and routs the send to an FX Channel for you.

    I recently upgraded to Studio One 4 and to my surprise it has no fast fwd or rewind on interface. Tech response to this was I need a high resolution monitor. What? That's their reasoning? I am on limited income, cannot afford a new monitor right now but why with all the hype about this DAW wouldnt they make it compatible with everyone's gear? I have used Studio One for 7 years now and loved it, till now. Just my take on it.

    Yep, used Studio One 3 for over a year. Being very familiar to other major DAW's (aside from Reaper) this one I found to have the best workflow, especially when switching hats from musician to audio engineer. Recommending it to people is hard tho, they just don't understand until they sit down and try it. Thanks for the review!

    I've got a similar history with DAW's and I tried Studio One v2 about 7 years ago? Something like that, anyway. I found it to be very quick and intuitive and have stuck with it since. I was using Ableton Live prior to S1, and I still miss some stuff from Live which I won't specify. Prior to Live I had used Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools, and my first DAW was Cakewalk in around 1996. I like them all to be perfectly honest. Each DAW has something that it excels with and other deficiencies. For me, the most important attribute is stability followed by workflow, then it's a wash of features which I prefer that make life a little easier along with stock plug-ins. I think at one point CPU load was very important to me but these days machines are so powerful that I don't really consider that any longer.
    S1 is a really good DAW. And while stability issues have started to crop up with Presonus' products which are driving me mad, S1 offers so many quality of life features that I think it far exceeds all other DAWS in terms of ergonomics. Particularly with v3 onward but even more so with v4. That being said, as I alluded to earlier, with each update of S1 I have more problems. Plug in issues, midi issues, audio driver issues, vst3's vst2's, crashing, missing files.... etc etc... it's kind of been a mess for the last year or so with Presonus and my machines.
    The current version of studio one is not compatible with the latest nVidia video drivers. So I'm running a much older video driver. I have had to migrate most of my vst3 library to vst2 because suddenly S1 has issues with these. There are other vst's which have had issues going back to 3.5 which are not resolved. My Presonus audio interface is suddenly getting errors when used with S1 and support, while they have tried to help. has been unhelpful.
    My guess is Presonus will iron things out over time. My personal belief is that they're spreading themselves too thin. With the huge success of their DAW they have dove in headfirst into so many other products that they're allowing their QC and attention to detail to go tot he wayside. I hope they sort out these issues. Otherwise, I'll be taking another spin on the DAW carousel soon.

    So you do think and support from your perspective that Studio One Pro is better than Logic Pro X? I used to play drums, been retired many years now and I know not too much about the technical details of audio; not an audio engineer here although I do have the musical ear, so for the sake of having fun, I got Studio One Pro when it was 3.5 in late 2017 and through June 2018 I recorded close to 40 drums cover videos that I uploaded in youtube. My setup is 16 mic preamps coming into the DAW from 2 Focusrite Clarett 8PreX (wish I could afford the Apollos!) I have decent quality for as much as I could afford mics and a nice 7 piece DW set (use 13 inputs) then I use a drumless mp3 file for the song I want to lay drums on; after my inputs are in from the Focusrite, I load this map3 file and play over it recording the drums. that is the basic, now the fun; for the life of me I have not come to fully understand and take advantage of this software; maybe what I do it is too simple for it but know that I am lost on how to use its different tools; the tutorials may as well be in Chinese (remember I am not an audio engineer) the main issue I have is creating a click track; if I use drumless files from karaokeversion.com they provide a click track with their files but those files are depictions of the cover tunes you'd want many times executed horribly and poorly in comparison with the original so I like or would like to use drumless mp3 files provided by Guitar Hero; these at least are the original tunes where the drums track have been suppressed and although not perfect they are the closest thing to be playing that tune professionally as if it was with the original musicians; the problem is that after you convert one of these songs to mp3 to be able to load it onto Studio One Pro, it is almost impossible to create a click track in Studio One Pro that match the mp3 file (I do not understand very well yet no matter how many tutorials I watch how to work with time stretching and similar features like quantize or align the tempo in Studio One Pro) I have to mention the click track in these instance is paramount because it is not the same to play live with a band than to "follow" a recording you are listening in your ears just laying the tempo yourself without an electronic guide; basically as a drummer you are following a clock (the mp3) and you need help from another external clock to match that tempo as perfectly as possible or the differences can be heard on the recording and thus in my book, that would be not a good job (see and hear some of my recordings and mixing in youtube under "Rody Drums Covers") at first, the first experiments, I was having a horrible drums bleeding issues in that the playing of the drums was overpowering the mix in my ears; that was resolved at a very expensive price with Weston in Ears monitors which are custom molded to my ears now providing a perfect seal; I no longer hear the drums "outside" even when I am right there and now I can hear the mix all together in my ears; the difference is night and day but still I face the issue of the click track. Another issue is with the input and master output when the mix is done and faders are played with and effects added etc. In the Focusrite my gain levels are mostly less than a quarter turn of the knob because anything more than that hits the red! then in Studio One there is so much level gain I can allow before distorting, which makes my mix low in volume! I use the levels in the individual channels under -9 db because if I go over that I get clipping; then the master have to be at around those levels which makes some tunes ok as far as level goes but some not so much and no matter what I do, do not seem to get the optimal loud volume without distortion unless I play it safe on the db scale; as you can see, I know a little about audio fundamentals but I am lost on how to use the software properly to compensate for my lack of knowledge on the subject which is why I was thinking to try Logic Pro X before seen your video here (apparently I am better off not doing that!) I have not recorded anything since mid last year but I have many good drumless files ready as mp3 but they need, have to have a click track or it will sound less than perfect; one of these files is Rush song "Tom Sawyer" which has a time signature change in the middle to 7/4; this song is precise and playing it without a click to me is an offense to the original, LOL. I am not sure Studio One has a way for a click track to be created and matched to an mp3 file; I tried before the "follow" command and all that related, like I said, expended time watching tutorials but got nowhere. You think you can help? All advises are welcome, even if it is "ditch Studio One Pro" but at the moment, I think it is the best DAW out there, according to the tutorials I watch from other vendors.

    I've been hearing a lot of good thing about Studio one. Even one studio owner I know converted his studio from Pro Tools to Studio one. And by "converted" I mean dumping Avid converters and control surface along with it. That says something.

    Yeah! Studio One User here. Just one quick tip that probably makes you like it even more: There is a dedicated drum mode instead of the piano roll, where - amongst other features - you can even name the different lines instead of having note names.

    We are now in the day of where people who can communicate well do really well and are much more important than they were before youtube. Some people just have a certain style that works, and this guy does, and so it works well. I really enjoyed the style of this presentation. I am new to Studio One. Subscribed.

I almost gave in and settled for "familiarity" so I was going to go with LPX but now, THANK YOU -- I am 100% going to jump into PreSonus Studio One 4 after seeing your honest review. I'm so excited to order and receive it and get it going!

      The good thing about them is that you can try out their free version first to see if you like it and if it works for you.
      The bad thing about it is, if it cannot tell your audio device is stereo, you're fucked. There is nothing you can do. It won't boot up all the way. It won't let you select no audio device. It won't let you even close it. You have to use task manager or taskkill to end it.
      The bad thing listed has made this application almost unusable. I had to finagle it and my computer to get it so I can use it, sort of. But it still wouldn't play any audio to me, no matter the device setting. So I would have to render the song after every change to hear it. However, I now have on other issue I have to work around (may be due to me resolving the first), I can't get it to actually program any music, or record off the computer; and I want that resolved before I connect it to my keyboard as I will need that function to make any changes to what I played/recorded.

    The fact you can turn all your midi tracks into wave tracks and save CPU is awesome. Also you can mix down your tracks one at a time with plugins and save them as a wave then delete the plugins to save CPU.

    I discovered Studio One on a whim in 2012, when they had a Winter NAMM special on the Artist version for $20.12. My response was like yours - I found it extremely intuitive, so much so that I had a few ditties recorded and mixed before I ever opened the manual. I immediately upgraded to the "Pro" version, and have been happily using it ever since. It's been very stable, and very efficient in terms of resources. I can have 50+ tracks going, with plugins galore, and the little CPU meter never gets past about 30-40% at the most. The only time it's ever locked up on me was after an Avast update, which was solved within 24 hrs after an email to Presonus tech support. So yeah, I love it, and my productivity has quadrupled just 'cause it's so much fun. I used Cubase for years before, and never liked it. Before that it was PARIS by Ensoniq, which was great until Emu bought it and discontinued it. Anyway, Studio One - two thumbs up. (I see you have the Slate Digital VMR, too, which I also like a lot.) Peace.

      Jhoofnail I tried it for a little bit and can’t deny I don’t like it. I’m a long time logic user and love logic. But can def see s1 has some advantages. My experience though was that some plugins took up some more processing power in s1 as opposed to logic. Especially the waves abbey. Does anyone have that experience.

      Well I’m never switching from logic. Free updates plus I know it inside and out. Not worth the switch to pay whatever it cost just for a few extra functions. I’m sure the extra functions are excellent but you can’t miss something you’ve never had. Plus I don’t have time to learn a new Daw I have music to make.

    I would absolutely LOVE to move to Studio One but there is zero focus for film / video game scoring or sound design which is such a crazy thing as it's two gigantic industries that just don't get a look in. A friend tried to get me on to it and I loved the way it works but it had terrible performance for video playback for picture-sync (like a decoding issue) which probably needs updated video codecs and it seemed to have no support for surround mixes at all. If they resolve those two issues I'd recommend this beauty to everyone.

    It is almost as if I keep waiting to find the workflow breaker that makes me ditch Studio One v4 and return to Live10. This has not happened. Intuitive is a word that best describes this DAW. I have not opened the manual. Plus, Studio One v4 sounds amazing and seems far deeper for mixing than L10. I did not expect Studio One v4 to be this good. I WAS happy in Live10.

    I downloaded Studio One full demo yesterday. I’m a drummer. I have ezdrummer 2. I’m going to buy a Presonus audiobox. I get a free Artist daw when I do. Soon I’ll crossgrade to Superior Drummer 3. I only want to make kits that I can play live with an electronic kit. Also to customize the mix and make or add loops of other percussion to play along with. From what I’ve seen I’m probably good just having the Artist daw. Is there a book like “daw for dummies”? I’m way lost listening to vids for beginners. I don’t think they know what a beginner is. It needs to be much simpler please. Step by step and slow. Thanks

    I'm still slumming it in Studio One v. 2. I initially messed around with audacity as a kid then got reaper when I started trying to actually record some music. I've been using Studio One v.2 for about 6 years now and have used it for my last 2 E.P.s with my band as well as a few other odds and ends that I've done with friends. It's a great DAW and if I do change any time soon it'll be to a newer version of Studio One.

    I recently learned that Studio One is the successor to an old, old free open source DAW that I used to use called Kristal Audio Engine. The lead developer joined Presonus back in 2009. It's really fun to see what evolved from the what would have been called K2.

    I've been a Studio One user since V1, after being a Cubase user since the 90s. Studio One started out essentially as a new version of Cubase for the modern day. What won me over was the "drag and drop" workflow, which you forgot to mention in the video. :)

    I gave it a try for a simple project and liked the simplicity and intuitiveness of StudioOne. I used the free version to get started. As I was looking at which version looked best, I noticed some gaps in the lower two versions. I can't remember the "free" version name, but I believe the next version up was "Artist". Even with the Artist version, you have to buy add-ons to ge features like the ability to create an MP3 or use a VST. What version should a person buy to get started? Basically my question would be, in order to be equivalent to say REAPER or Logic, which version of StudioOne does a person have to purchase? Thanks for the time and consideration.

    Nice vid. I switched from Cubase to S1 about 6 months ago. It's kind of similar but as you said the workflow just seems faster and more comfortable in Studio One and I feel more at home using it, the learning curve coming from a different Daw is super simple and easy. About the midis velocities : I believe a few DAWs have that, Cubase has also had it since at least version 5 I believe. I find it weird that logic doesn't as it seems like such a basic function to my when using midi and its a big part of making a written part sound humanized and more realistic.
