So powerful, so emotional ! Karita Mattila is a very great diva. (how people can press the thumb down on this video!?)
She had me at "Vissi..." ♡ Rendered like an actual personal conversation with God. Brava! Brava! Brava!
I saw this whole opera a couple of years ago through HD Series, and it was magical. Having a voice like this is a gift from heaven only a few mortals can enjoy, so I don't understand these dark people making terrible comments of someone so special, they can only envy... just close your eyes and listen, if only you can.
Quelle merveille. Merci Karita !! Sur grand écran ou sur mon gsm, une émotion !
Her facial expressions are speaking as well! It's an incredible talent to sing like that!
Just saw her Tosca, it was amazing
I am absolutely in tears. Puccini was the best at tugging at the heartstrings.
Just woderful! One of the bests "Vissi d'arte" I ever heard! Bravo!
Karita Mattila's incredible performance brought us to tears! So beautiful. anyone who wastes their time criticizing such beauty and emotion needs to be spanked. :)
Tellement beau Merci pour le partage
Powerful and touching rendition!!
For once I prefer the acting to the singing! Not feeling this voice wise, but the acting is great! I will look at some more of her stuff though!
First opera I ever watched. I think I made a mistake watching one of the best first. :)
Incredible! Bravo!
WOOOOOW
I really adore Karita. I’ve seen her onstage as a great Donna Elvira, Salome, Chrysothemis, many others. But I don’t think Puccini is her great strength. Her Manon Lescaut and Tosca were certainly good, but not particularly memorable.
MARAVILHOSA👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
A great moment of introspection. She is magnificent.
I disagree with a lot of this. I think she did a marvelous job in this role, and the voice being "screamy" at the top just adds to the drama.
+Pe Callahan I think a lot of people just have a bias against Mattila in Italian rep. I don't think it's her strongest area, and she doesn't have a classically Italianate sound, but there are many Italian roles in which she's really excelled (the Boccanegra Amelia, for example). I also don't think people take into account the fact that this was a fraught run of performances, with Levine dropping out after opening night, and the production so viciously maligned in the press. I saw the first three performances with Mattila when this production was new. Was she the best Tosca I ever heard? No. Was it an interesting, captivating performance? Absolutely.
Bellísima interpretacion
She owned this MF up!
@neneorganico You are right. Just enjoy the vids and don't feed him with comments, he will find his way to be offensive and aggressive
I completely disagree. Ms Mattila is very talented, but this was NOT a good representation of her talents. She did Salome prior to this and was BRILLIANT! But Tosca--not so much. Just because you CAN sing a role does not mean you should. She was very wrong for the role of Tosca. (And it is NOT a stellar production!). And that makeup is quite bad.
That's what I was saying. I wasn't knocking her talent, as that is undeniable. It was just not a role suited to her particular talents. As I said, I have seen her in other productions in which she was stellar. Tosca, though, not so much. While I understand what your are saying about other performers and productions, they are irrelevant to this, as we were discussing Ms Mattila's performance and this production. I am glad to hear that she came round to realize her I'll fit with this role. Now if they would just get a new production of Tosca at the Met.
When the orchestra is right . . .
Bravo 🌹🌹
Grande Marita Mattila!
Karita* but yes❤
@LohengrinT
Now you're using a strawman argument. There isn't a bit of hatred or anger in my heart actually. I only pity people that don't feel happy unless they are what they perceive to be visually beautiful. I merely pointed out things you specifically said and commented on them, rather than make baseless assumptions or insults which you have to me twice now. This is opera, performance, and a testament to talent, but you are supporting the idea that opera is nothing but superficial.
Y después hay gente que se atreve a criticar la Tosca de Renata Tebaldi...
Люблю всех Тосок мира.
stonatissimo con brio...
@LohengrinT
I fear we're sliding away into a topic far different from opera. I see calling the human body imperfect to be the seed of a lot of pain in human beings. Then again, I've volunteered in human rights the last four years of my life, and I guess I've come to see that imperfections are in fact perfect. I've also seen the superficial images and media, calling people imperfect, preying on their insecurities to grab their money. I think from here, we should take it to private messages.
What a great artist ,but the production left a lot to be desired
its sad you was not the director of it then, such a talent you are
@LohengrinT
To each their own I suppose. I've just never been able to "appreciate" the superficial I suppose. Some take it to heart. I probably lack the ability. The sets here and human interaction though are the big issue for me.
Dramaticly wounderfully committed, no question. But one must not ignore that her technique is quite faulty, especially at the top where she more or less screams the notes and has to hang on to them for dear life. The bflat and the following aflat and g are extremely precarious although she masks those faults beautifully turning them into part of the drama.
It was unfortunate the Met finally gave Mattila a Tosca toward the end of her career, when the voice was no longer what it was during her heyday in the 90’s. Still, I adore her.

@LohengrinT
About her eyebrows: I've always seen her with thin eyebrows. Maybe it's simply her. Then again, I've not been one to judge someone's looks.
It wasn't one of her best roles for sure, I didn't find her a believable Tosca, not in acting or sound.
@LohengrinT
Now your retort includes an insult, saying I look like hell. You don't know me in person. I've been only respectful and humanistic, and I came here to watch opera, judging a performance, perhaps discuss the performance and direction. I pity you, that you feel validation in insulting an unseen person, thinking all humans need to be "corrected" in mere appearance, not even meeting them.
It stops being an art when the basis is insulting and possibly harming another human being.
все мимо.....
Это наверное вы о своей жизни так говорите...Жаль...
Yes, Lohengrin is a VERY disturbing individual. Serious issues in his head!
Wow, dreadful. Intonation all over the map and evinces as much Italianità as a bag of frozen Lingonberries. It will surely appeal to those inclined toward camp.
Lingonberries because she's Finnish? Lol
This woman is horrendous
In reality I don't like her way of singing. She looks like if she were crying.
Well, she is crying.
Oh please. Horrible.
