Create Heavy Top Pressure in BJJ With Easy Bodyweight Awareness Tip

  • One thing almost everyone wants to do in BJJ is add more top pressure to Side Control and Mount positions. I'm sure you've know the saying "position before submission" and you'll also learn (if you don't already know) that the better you hold position the easier the submission comes. So adding a extra pressure from top is not only important for control it's also crucial for your submission game.
In this video I answer a question from someone who says their coach tells them to, "Add more top pressure to make the bottom person uncomfortable." But he's curious, how do you add more top pressure in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
So in this video I share a tip that's been useful to me. And to be honest I didn't really absorb this lesson till I was probably a Black Belt. So if you get it sooner than me, you're off to a better start than I was.
The Brazilian Jiujitsu lesson is really simple. It involves being aware of your bodily positioning. Sounds easy, but often there are a lot of moving parts to each position and the actual connection to the other persons body happens without much conscious thought.
So if you're wanting to add more pressure to BJJ positions from top then I hope this video is useful to you in your BJJ training or competitions in the future.

Pro tip. To add pressure, remind your opponent their parents are getting older and older and they haven't been spending enough time with them and one day they won't be able to.

Chewy I've been watching your channel for a minute now and enjoy it very much... I have a question that maybe you could help me with... I have a 14 year old son that started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the age of 5 took about three years off... An now he just started back again about 6 months ago... Since he has been there he has progressed very quickly... That the coaches and professor invited him to train with the adults and to help coaches the tiny champions class... So now he is training with the adults... He's training seven days a week including open mat on Sundays 3 to 4 hours a day... An he is also helping coach 4 days out the week... Sometimes I ask him if he wants to take the day off and his answer is "Hell nawww the grind never stops" lol... My questions is it to much and should I have him take it back a notch??? My only concern is his health... I don't want to see him getting injured due to doing so much...

I am too stoned for Adam, that’s some funny shit. I have focused for years to not only keep weight on them but transition from position to position with our releasing pressure, mixed with strikes they really couch up subs, but my question is how do you keep your energy output in check? It takes a lot of energy to keep pressure on them too instead of flowing

HEY CHEWY! I really need your advice! I really want to train jujitsu but I'm having a hard time overcoming the fear. I've been going to a mma gym where they also teach bjj for about 5 weeks now for 1 or 2 classes per week. I was also taking their striking and wrestling classes as well until one day the wrestling coach told us how he'd lost about 15 people because of serious injuries from falling improperly and breaking ribs or limbs. I got scared and decided to do bjj and striking only. I recently looked up bjj injuries online and that really scared me. My parents are against me doing any martial art anyways because they think it's dangerous and 'barbaric'. I get anxious whenever I'm heading out to the gym thinking this would be the day I get a nasty injury and regret it for the rest of my life. I do use a mouthguard but I'm still worried I'll mess up my ears or twist my neck and get paralyzed or something. I live in Pakistan's capital city and there are only two mma gyms that teach bjj here. I visited the other one but the head coach was a Chinese guy that actually specialized in tai chi. My gym is quite good (it's considered one of the best in the country) but the overall atmosphere is not relaxed and some of the people get really aggressive when training. The head bjj coach is a nice guy but he's a purple belt. There are about 20 students training there in total, mostly white belts. I'm studying engineering at a really good university as well and the added stress isn't helping at all. I really REALLY want to train but the fear is debilitating and I'm thinking of quitting altogether. I honestly don't know whether this fear is irrational because a lot of people seem to get injured doing this stuff. Im ok with minor injuries but I don't want injuries that'll stay with me forever. Should I just give up on my dream of doing martial arts and just start golf? How real are the risks involved?
I've been binge watching dozens of your videos over the past month and I love your insight. You're a cool guy and a great coach! Wish you luck

At the moment my top pressure seems to be the best thing i can do when i roll. Some people have asked me if I've wrestled before which i haven't lol.
I feel like more experienced white belts and some bluebelts might not like what i do because i struggle to take it anywhere else but seem to be able to hold position (unless its my 3rd or 4th roll where i gas out and they kick my ass)which is probably frustrating for the other person but isn't the first 6 months on the matt just surviving?
I just want to know if anyone else has been in the same position. Should i just continue as i am.and try to learn new things to incorporate or try to learn jiujitsu on the back foot defensively.
Its been just over 6 months for me doing BJJ by the way.
Probably not going to happen but Chewy if you can answer this I'd very much appreciate it bro

It's the same with everything: practice. Start by focusing on getting 1 finish from 1 position. Work it until it's muscle memory (AND SLEEP 8 HOURS. It strengthens neural connections involved in muscle memory) and then try another finish. You also could turn your pressure into an advantage. Catch Wrestling is a form of grappling that systematically prefers top pressure, while still using submissions. No gi is similar, especially for practitioners who prefer to be on top. You can look for their techniques that attack from the top, focus on one that you think you can do, and then drill that.

I've asked for advice about this in the past, i'll give u a comprehensive list on what i've been told:
      1. Stop being a baby
      2. Work on framing and escaping
      3. Get on your side
      4. Just keep training
      5. Stop panicking
In conclusion I think it's just something u have to get used to and cant be helped. Recently in my rolls I'm working on whenever someone is crushing me to actively calm myself down and think how to escape. Hope this helps
