Scissor Sweep for BJJ White Belts (Try These Adjustments)

  • The Scissor Sweep is one of the first Sweeps from Guard that most BJJ White Belts learn. And in a recent video where I covered some simple adjustments to the Keylock. Several of the White Belts that watch the channel asked for some tips on some of the really basic Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques that White Belts use.
So I decided to cover the Scissor Sweep since this is one of the 1st sweeps most White Belts learn. In addition, the movement used for the Scissor Sweep will be used over and over again in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Whether you’re trying to sweep of if you’re trying to open guard and transition to other positions beside the full guard.
In this video I show some simple adjustments and tweaks to the Scissor Sweep that have made this BJJ technique useable for me as a higher level belt and in addition been very helpful to many of my students.
Simple things like turning the wrist over, grinding the hips up rather than simply coming up to the knees in mount have really helped.
Try combining these adjustments with some of the instruction your BJJ coach teaches you at your gym.
I hope this video helps your BJJ Scissor Sweep regardless of whether you're a White Belt or not.
    Thanks for watching!

First week in BJJ. I think understanding the importance of always having good grips is the most important lesson I have learned so far. That, and not forgetting to breathe.

Totally, that's what Rickson Gracie talks a lot about in his book as well. And the name of the book is even named "breathe". It's so important, I think it even helps me remain calmer during rolls when I control my breathing.

Corny jokes are the best because you get a little chuckle with very little thought and then move on. For example: what is the difference between a hippo and a Zippo? ones really heavy and the other is a little lighter. I'm sure this just brightened up someone's day.

Chewy! I included this tips on class tonight and I was sweeping a partner 70 Pounds+ heavier than me, EFFORTLESS!! To get that good deep grip on the lapel it's crucial against tall/heavier opponents to really break their posture and leg that goes next to his leg REALLY needs to be completely flat no kidding and finally what helped my momentum was the detail of using your chest to kinda 'push' and help your opponent turn..amazing..2 week white belt here! thank you sir! Hey Chad no liabilities!

Excellent details. The only thing I do different is grab mid forearm maybe a little closer to the elbow. That grip helps me prevent them from using their hand or elbow from pinning my leg and passing the guard with a knee slice. It also helps me pull them off their base a little bit further. Just my two cents.

Hi Chewie not lame at all :)
You could just add some probable defences the person on the top is going to use (like lifting the knee up etc) and possible variation to counter those (like hooking under the leg and kicking the knee) and the video will be a masterclass in scissor sweep. Loved it as it is so just a humble suggestion. Like others I would like a series of these too. Many thanks for your and Chad's time and efforts.
