    I appreciate how you Sacrifice yourself for us by riding all those different motorcycles ... We Know you are doing it for US! (Smile)
    My Brother-in-Law to-be, years ago, had a Honda Scrambler 305... Yes it was heavy and the high pipe on the right side nearly always left a scorched spot on our jeans, and our knee. But it was such a blast to just simply PLAY with! We didn't have to 'race' anyone...we simply road places we wouldn't dream of taking our 'street bikes'... and that is pretty much how I started riding...
    When I went into the USMC and got a steady -- but Very Small -- paycheck I bought a Yamaha DT250 'Enduro' ...and road that thing nearly to its death, from 400 mile road trips to hours and hours of dirt roads and logging trails, and cow pastures.
    I really like the versatility of a "scrambler" -- comfortable enough as a 'commuter', smooth enough for a ride in the country, and if your country road turns into a dirt road, that's okay to. And yet -- with good shocks & forks and better 'dual-purpose' tires -- you can still have pretty good fun on a twisty road!

    I've owned a 2023 version and have ridden it daily ever since i bought it from the dealership. Pretty much everything he says is spot on. The suspension is "meh" at best. I do somewhat disagree with the knobby tires. I have them on mine and even riding in the rain I've never lost traction. I do flip the bike into rain mode when it's raining and ride with the rain in mind though.

    Great quick to the point video! Its great to see a series where someone dosen't "just love" everything about his or her favorite brand of motorcycle, or gets on a test ride and puts down everything about the bike because its not their favorite. ALSO great you have been riding it for a while, not just a day. Keep them coming! I love my bike but also have a few niggles I wish were better.

    Keep these coming! Short, sweet, certainly informative.
    Also, it gives guys (like me) who can only dream of these bikes a reality check that they aren’t indeed perfect, yet still have insanely awesome qualities that are worth celebrating.

      looks like a scrambler, but look at the reviews, that have rode it off road, you really don't want to, so not really a scrambler, its really just a road bike, so when you realise that and start comparing it to road bikes ..... well then its not that impressive.

    I love my 2017 BMW Scrambler, but you are SO right about the Karoo 3 tires. They look awesome, but they suck. Loud, vibrate, poor grip. I rode with them for 3 years. Then, I decided to forget about the appearance and I put on Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 tires. Cannot believe the difference! It’s like a completely different bike! The handling and confidence is amazing. Try them.

    Great series! Straight to the point. We need more reviewers that are not afraid to point out a bike's shortcomings. That way everyone can make up their mind what they can expect to modify or upgrade. That doesn't happen on all those manufacturer sponsored test rides. Great that there's more than just the FortNine channel with critical opinions.

    I just bought a 2017 with 2,727 miles on it today. The rear shock looks adjustable with a spanner wrench. You can always use heavier fork oil or stiffer springs.

      Yeah i've daily ridden on the Karoo 3s for a year and half and even in the rain i've not had an issue with the tires, no traction issues. They are loud around 40mph, but above that and all you hear is wind and engine.

    Yes please, more of this! I trust very few other moto journalists to do unbiased, short, to-the-point reviews of bikes. This short video contained so much information that really is all you need to decide whether you are into a bike or not. We all gotta test ride them before buying anyways, so this short review style is fresh and very valuable.
    Keep it up Ari! - and the rest of the crew :)

    I had the pleasure to ride this bike for a couple of days and I fully concur to what Ari said - the tyres are crap, they don't provide any confidence while driving. The looks are awesome and the boxer engine is just amazing... the sound, that boxer engine vibration and performance. I highly recommend to try one if you have the possibility.

    I tried it with knobby tires, then later with road tires. Night and day. Feels so analog in a good way. Great bike. Just wish it had cruise control. Living in Australia 85% of all travel is highway travel. You can get the occasional arm pump trying to sit on an exact speed limit.

    Switched out the Karoo's right after taking the bike home, they are terrible. Not as much as traction is concerned, but the way they make the bike handle is just off - they are lazy to lean and when you do lean, the sudden onset of fall-in is a bit scary. It's like the bike loses stability and then suddenly regains it mid-turn. Ugh. Put the Anakee 3's on and no problems, bike now handles neutrally and predictably. Overall, very happy with it. Just the sound it makes when you start it, the rumble & sway of the boxer, the popping and low gurgling of the Akra cans when you roll off the throttle, the look of it, the way the shaft drive compresses the shock on acceleration, the dry clutch. Some people complain about the lack of a tacho, but it doesn't need it. It simply doesn't care what gear you are in, it just pulls like a train. Love it to bits.

    • @hammersteve8
      @hammersteve8 7 років тому

      I agree, tachometer not needed neither is gear info, and I love the look of one dial. Bought mine with the offered option of road tyres as that's where I ride it. I have this and Bonnie T120 Black which is more comfortable but I adore the 'shake rattle and roll' of this bike. Reinis Traidās

    Interesting comment Re: the Karoo 3 tyres. I use them year round on my 1250 GSA here in the UK. I find them excellent off-road, but also very good on-road in wet or dry conditions. The noise doesn't bother me as I always wear ear plugs when riding. Maybe it is because you are in a warmer climate that causes the issues? I have tried other 50/50 tyres, but for me the Karoo 3 are the best of the bunch.

  • @BonuxCouleur
    @BonuxCouleur 4 роки тому

    I don't have the knobby tires on the Scrambler I bought (2017) but road oriented Continental which are good but wear down quite quickly. I am curious about the Bridgestone AX41S (S for Scrambler) which are supposedly designed for this type of bike, granted for me the Scrambler is NOT a scrambler it never was it is a Cafe Racer and personally I also find it is the best looking of all R9T especially with the aluminium tank, mine has a beautiful welding right in the middle it is an absolute beauty. I got ride off the plasticky bit plate holder at the rear for a side plate, so the rear tire is entirely free, got ride off the mirrors for some smaller round aluminium units at each end of the handle bar. It is all cosmetic but this Scrambler looks and ride beautifully you don't want too much plastic on it. This engine is sick in a good way and I have never owned a boxer before. Now the suspensions... I am not going off road with that one, it defies the purpose in my view but I would like these suspensions to be stiffer, if anyone has some advice in this department without having to change the whole fork, I am all ears. Can we upgrade to stiffer springs for instance?

  • @AZGeek520
    @AZGeek520 7 років тому +1

    Nicely done. I've owned a 2017 for more than 6 months as well and it is one of my favorite bikes to ride. Totally agree on the stock tires, which I ditched after a couple of weeks for some Pilot Road 4 Trails. While I like the rugged look of the Karoos, the Pilot 4 Road Trails look good on the bike with much better handling. Previous owner put on Ohlins shocks front and rear so I can't relate to the OEM suckiness. Very solid performance with the Ohlins suspension. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Akra exhaust at all. Definitely a win from my perspective. Also, I'm not going to say the mirrors are a total fail, but they are fugly. The bike looks much better with bar end mirrors IMHO.

    I had an *identical* bike as a rental back in 2019 in Phoenix, and maybe it was just an abused rental bike, but I *hated* the controls and the seat. There was no feel to *any* of the controls... it didn't want to go into first, and when it did there was zero feedback from the gear lever. No detectable click, no sound, the gear lever would still move down just as far as it did the previous time I stepped on it, just oh hey, the neutral light is off... I guess it's in gear? Ease out on the clutch, oh, yup! We're in first! (except the many times the neutral light would go off and it would be "in first" until I started the ease out the clutch and it slipped back into neutral)
    The brakes were also completely numb... lots of freeplay like you say on the front brake, and then before there was noticeable resistance on the lever *OOMPH*, holy sh*t that's more of a brake button than a lever! The blinker switches were also totally numb... wearing thin gloves I was still debating whether I had felt a click or not every time I used them.
    And the seat! They may not look it in the pictures and video, but the edges of that seat are *sharp*!!! I had some good bruises on my thighs from that thing and was definitely feeling it after just 50 miles.
    *But*... yeah, it's a damn sexy looking bike and the engine is just👌the feel of it nocking back and forth at idle, the way it climbs through the revs, and the sound... aaah, there are other bikes I would rather *buy*, but I certainly don't regret the time I had riding it.

    If you've already extended the front brake to it's limit on the lever, why not TIG weld some more reach onto the lever to shorten the point at which the hydraulic piston is actuated, but not fully flush with zero room for play... Doing that with the lever slacked out on the 0-5 clicker, then you'll have some room for play to tighten up the throw +/-.
    Just a thought, but I'd do it if that got under my skin though... Just by looking at it, it WOULD!

      TKC 80s are so much better. They squirm a bit but the steering and feel are consistent and the grip is surprisingly good on the street. Frustratingly, you CAN'T get the Contis on the Scrambler as a factory option.

    you should come ride my scrambler...10k in 12 months and all the "bad things" are fixed ie suspension (ohlins front and back with steering damper) tires Metzeler 01's..you're absolutely right about the constant comments from non motorcyclists!

    Please review Ducati Cafe Racer and Suzuki 650 Vstrom and please always mention throttle response. Which currently available bikes have smooth throttle response please.

    That thing is ridiculously good looking. And with the tires, I get the fashion statement, but you'd think BMW might, I don't know, also want to be the ultimate riding (see what I did there) machine and pop some decent rubber on there.

    My biggest fail on this bike? the seat. It looks great, but it's hard all all sharp edges. I rode my R Nine T from San Francisco to Seattle over a week end and it was pure pain on that second day.

    Do the Triumph Street Twin next! Don't think the year matters though.
