    That engine turn on the stand was the best I've ever seen.
    Ten years as a Toyota mechanic, I've only ever replaced two starters in that location, they're there on the 1VD too. Very reliable motors.

    Loving this! People dont realize how much of a PAIN it is to get the wiring, intake manifold off. I spent the better part of a day getting all that off to do a starter one time. Took me a few days to replace the starter, needless to say I opted to buy the most expensive starter I could find!

    I have had a set of those dual action sockets (that you have )for more than 7 years, and use them everyday in the automotive trade. I have just broken the first one the 10mm deep socket. they are the best socket set i have had the pleasure to own in the 33 plus years I have been working. as a mechanic. I have no complaints for the service that it gave.

    I had one of these 15 odd yrs ago with itbs, hurricane headers 2.5 inch exhaust and single coils with a tune. never set the world on fire power wise but the sound of the Itbs was amazing. could have used bigger cams and a bit of a head job but didn't have the money at the time. Good to see another engine in your garage.

    Hi. When you pull the sump on a used engine it is always a good idea to do it with the engine the right way up. that way any debris stays in the sump instead of falling back in amongst the moving parts like the crank and rods etc. Cheers MD

  • @kdfrkdfr

    Good video, looking forward to subsequent. As a 1UZ-FE engine owner, I'd be re-building the starter for sure, it's common for a few little parts in it to wear out, it will begin to intermittently click and not engage then it will give up the ghost altogether. Same with the alternator, common fault on these after a while is that the power steering pump o-rings fail and fluid drips into the alternator.

    Keep the videos up Scotty! great work. I remember adding longtube headers to my 1UZ Soarer back in the day, they sounded awesome and made it a ton more responsive - those factory block hugger extractors are really awful. Seems to me Toyota choked these engines up, adding FE heads rather than GE, adding an overly restrictive exhaust setup too. They were going for smooth and refined - but they can be woken up!

    • @Twenty_Six_Hundred
      @Twenty_Six_Hundred 2 роки тому +3

      In Japan they have strict government HP restrictions, so detuning their engines via restricted bolt-ons is/was very common practice. That's why JZ's and RB's can be woken right up with just bolt-ons alone.

    • @tturi2
      @tturi2 2 роки тому +1

    • @ChristopherHallett
      @ChristopherHallett 2 роки тому +1

      @@Twenty_Six_Hundred Hell, you used to be able to make an SR20 in an S15 200SX/Silvia go from ~150 flywheel kW to ~250 wheel kW with just a turbo-back exhaust, a front-mount, an intake, a set of injectors and a fuel pump, winding the factory boost limit up to 21 PSI, and a dyno tune for 98 octane. And as long as you didn't decide to be a diftyboi and limiterbash the thing all day long, you'd get a good long life out of it if you kept full synthetic oil and a quality filter on the engine every 5000 kms.

    I remember when auto V8 Soarers were like $2500 landed, complied, licensed and registered back in the early-mid 2000s, they were fucking EVERYWHERE. With their drivers absolutely baffled trying to figure out the Japanese labels for the HVAC and entertainment systems in the car and just giving up and plugging in a Discman to listen to tunes! They were fairly nice bits of kit until the air suspension died though, great cruisers.

    You think that starter motor location it bad Scotty, my 92 Holden Jackaroo has the Isuzu 6VD1 3.2L V6 and the starter motor is attached to the side of the engine, and with the lack of space the quickest way to replace it comes down to 2 choices, remove the engine or the gearbox. I've had the gearbox out twice now and it "looks" easier to remove the engine instead.
    Good car to drive, not good on fuel. Absolutely kicks you in the ass if you have to work on anything but oil and brakes, replacing the alternator was a mission, rocker cover seals were a several hour mission (involved removing intake plenum, raising the back of the gearbox a bit and removing clutch master cylinder). The timing belt wasn't too bad, I wish the alternator had shit itself just before I did the timing belt cause I had all the room in the world to do it then.

    What you reckon rods and bearings would be worth since you’ve gone this far? 280k on motor plus I can just see it as a paddock basher foot to the floor bouncing off cut out with questionable oil (because who cares about decent oil in a paddock basher) sucking down dust. If it’s being boosted with a ton more power might be worth going that step further to avoid heartache

      Is there anything you can put on the plugs to rehydrate them so you maybe have a chance of getting them off before they crumble?

      @@jungofett Not really because once plastic gets brittle, it's basically it as it's lost its tensile strength and flexibility. Best way to see this is get a storage container, leave it out in the sun for a few weeks and then try and grab it and watch it snap in your hands and make a mess across your yard. 👎

    My eyes aren't great, but we're you using your torque wrench to undo the harmonic balancer and head bolts?
    With the money your spending on cams, turbo and accessories, a set of rings, gapped for boost, and bearings, surely won't break the bank?

      It's an old torque wrench. We have a couple better ones.

    Any port work on the heads too? The intake side on them never looks good for flow.
