  • Today I go outside to test my new camera, which is a Fujifilm GFX 50R with the Fujinon GF 100-200mm Lens. This camera will be the replacement of my much-loved Canon 5D MKIV which I have owned for many years. Unfortunately, my test doesn't quite go to plan as I battle ferocious winds and snow storms which force me to shoot handheld: not ideal, but I hope you enjoy my video. 10% off your first Squarespace website or domain:

I've owned nothing but vans for the last fifty years. By now you know that they are the perfect landscape photography accessory. A word of advice, if I may; DON'T SLAM THE SLIDING DOOR. They're vulnerable to damage and extremely difficult to adjust and (heaven forbid) repair.
I nearly bought a JDI Delica here in Western Canada, but chose an 04 Sprinter instead. Six times around the world (equivalent) so far, so good.
Have fun with your new Fuji!

Welcome to the GFX world!! I bought a GFX 50r last summer. Best camera I have ever owned! You should invest in the Techart smart EF to GX adapter! I love mine. That way you can use your old Canon ef glass. Many lenses cover the sensor, and those that don't you can either crop or shoot the GFX in 35mm mode. The dynamic range of the GFX raw files is astounding. I'm sure you will love the camera, as well as I do.

Great choice. Not at all surprised. You like to crop your images so make sense to go for GFX. Also 50R that make sense either. Beautiful form as to start, range finder style. You clearly do not care for ibis which 100s has. It has a great dynamic range with massive resolution that sensor. And cheap compared to any other medium format on the market and some Full frame cameras too. Finally you can do 65x24 aspect in camera.

  • @PhotoViking

Chopped it in for the 100s (the other 100 is just too large and heavy) but it could be a month yet until that arrives. Cannot fault the glass either, I have the 100-200 (with the 1.4x) , a 23mm and the 32-64 which about covers it all and they all perform well. Enjoy and keep on posting - always a joy

Welcome to the 50r owners club!
I’ve been absolutely loving mine. I only have one native lens too (GF50) which I’ve hardly used....I’ve been too busy having a ball with Pentax 67 105mm & 45mm on it with a Kipon Baveyes (0.7x) adapter.
I know the logic suggests that a new camera doesn’t make you a better photographer, BUT, I think I am genuinely improving since getting the 50r, I’ve recently have two or three sessions where I’ve had some of my best sets of results ever (or so I feel). I think what it is, is that the camera & lenses I’m using are really making me want to get out and try more....& the more you shoot, the better you get, right?

I'm pretty sure you're going to love the GFX system once you get used to it. If you decide to buy the 100-200mm you could pair it with the 45-100mm (which also has OIS) and then get a wide angle lens like the 30mm! That'll cover just about anything you'll ever need! :)
Also the 50R is still fantastic for landscapes, the 100S does not offer much more except for more pixels...which has its own disadvantages.

I used to use a Nikon D810 but got fed up of carrying it + 3 x f2.8 zooms, etc around (I'm not a young man anymore and my knees complain bitterly to me if over-exerted) so I swapped to a Fuji X-series system. I love it and still have it. However, I recently got the chance to get hold of a s/hand GFX50r at a good price so I went for it. I suspect I'll use it mostly for landscapes at relatively short distances from the car but I love that camera and I hope you enjoy yours as much. I also have the 100-200mm lens (and the 32-64mm) - both of which are stellar, IMO. Incidentally, I can also recommend Capture One Pro for Fuji file post processing. I have been a long-term LR user but I really like the way that C1 Pro processes Fuji files. There's a free C1 "Express" version you can get. Your call, of course but, for free, what's to lose?

This camera is certainly an option in the price range. It has bigger sensor, but a lot of FF designed lenses cover it, so those can be used via adapters with this camera. Same with legacy lenses. You can adapt some 50mm 1.2f lenses from 35mm film cameras, without much of vignette, so that definitely introduces an artistic advantage in the pictures you take.
Although this camera has its quirks, Ken Rockwell has it written about those. But with FF high end bodies reaching a price range of ~3.5k these days and the newest Sony FF sets the price at 6k, this fuji MF certainly sounds like a good deal...

Well… Medium format anyway lol. The Fujis are a lot closer to Full Frame than they are to a Hasselblad.

Congrats on the new gear, I'm guessing your friend Adam Gibbs (who I also follow),perhaps influenced the choice to go with Fuji. Enjoy, new stuff always gets me energized. We had something in common for 1 month, just purchased the 5D MK4 on Jan 12th to replace my 6D!!

I will say that -9°C isn't bad even with high wind compared to starting my car going to work yesterday, it was -40°C with -50°C windchill, yes I live above the arctic circle and we've had 7+ weeks of the last 9 weeks where the temperature was colder than -30°C not including the windchill. Try that on for size.

Just a thought Tom but the 100-200 isn't the first lens I would have thought anyone might have as their first and only lens?? I have it and it is as you have proved a great lens but the 32-64 is a bit more versatile as a first/only lens.

He's a specialist landscape photographer. Exclusively for landscape with strong compression, it's the perfect lens. Add a wide angle prime for the occasional environmental shot and you're all set.

Great video! Glad you like the GFX50R too. I just took mine out this morning to shoot my favorite tree in -9 degrees with ground fog and straight into the sun. Lenses didn't flare one bit. The quality of the Fuji GFX system makes me really happy, I have to say. I have a suggestion for handholding the 50R with the longer lenses: get the wooden grip by SmalRig. Now I'm off editing my images!

You really need to stop being so apologetic about removing stuff from your photos, because it's getting old, and it makes the viewers think that you feel guilty about it! In my opinion you can do whatever you want with your photos as long as you are honest about it! The fact that you try to keep the photo as close to the original raw file as possible is of course appreciated, but at the end of the day the end result is what matters the most!

Admire your fortitude in shooting in those conditions Thomas. I think you're overly concerned about shooting handheld. I regularly shoot handheld with my Canon RP (mirrorless) with Canon stabilised lenses. Even in average lighting conditions I can produce sharp images at anything over say 1/200sec.

Why or why or why wasn't the Canon 5DSr not considered for a medium format. Saves building up your lens collection up, you already have them. Doesn't seem financial viable to myself.

I got to try out the GFX50R and the 100S at a Fuji event.
    Stunning cameras and great lenses.
Though I do find it bothering that they don't have an ISO dial. Just aperture and shutter.
You have to poke around on a screen to fiddle with ISO. Though I suppose there is some way to map ISO to function dial, like you can do on an XT3 or Xpro3, my two current cameras.

It's cute that you think the -10c windchill is brutal. We are in the middle of a stretch of -45c days here. It hurts to breath. :) Impressive results from the camera and I like the first photo, particularly when you had zoomed in to show the woman and bird a bit tighter in.
