- Landscape photography requires you to have one camera and a tripod. That's about all you need to thrive as a landscape photographer, and this is how it has always been for me. So, what happened in the past 12 months which means I now have an arsenal of different cameras? In this video I explain why I own 4 Fujifilm cameras, 2 Canon Cameras, an Intrepid 4x5 camera and a Hasselblad 501cm film camera. Have I gone mad?

Don't get rid of the treasured 5D4; it's a part of you. I still have my first SLR, a beautiful Mimiya Sekor 1000DTL from 1969. I will never give it up, and it's in my will.
Wow, my first camera was a Mamiya Sekor 500 DTL. Still love the sound of the shutter! Don't miss the film development though.

Shooting those film cameras is a satisfying process. My father asked my why I occasionally shoot and develop film and the only answer I could come up with his much I love "the process."
I would hang on to the 5D : you will always look back to the times and images which established your success with nostalgia. And a key component sitting on your shelf will be a trigger..
And you have a backup camera within the same system
This is the thing with enthusiastic photographers. They tell themselves "one day, I will make a good living off of it". 10 years later they figure out that they could have indeed had a good living, but instead they bought 19 cameras and sets of lenses to go with.
Photography is the sane side of an insane world, never give it up.
Clearly, you have an understanding wife and a healthy budget set aside for large bunches of flowers!

I share your sentiment about the transition. I had been a dedicated Nikon shooter starting with an F in 1959 through to F6, to D3x and on to D810. In the past 5 years I have, like you, been drawn into the Fujifilm environment, now with 5 bodies and 15 lenses, and on track to move into the GFX world with a 50R
Not trying to change anyone's mind but I do want to point out that a Canon mirrorless with the drop in filter adapter is a great option to consider. Keep on using your EF lenses (which still perform great), and no more glass plates or screw on filters on the front of your lenses. It's a clever solution that I'd like to see more of.

Bought around 20 manual lenses during lockdown. All of them were fairly cheap. Love em.

Young guy says getting older makes one want to go backwards... to film. Yes, that’s completely true. Me... going back to shooting the old film cameras I purchased when they were brand new. But also want one of those intrepids now too!
Good video Thomas. The same thing happened to me two years ago. I was a dedicated Nikon shooter then made the ‘mistake’ of buying a Fujifilm x100F. Over the next year all my Nikon gear, with exception of an FM2N, had gone and has been replaced with Fujifilm equipment!

Wow. This was so fun to watch and hear!!! Busman’s holiday with film.!! My all time favorite camera was the Pentax 67 but the gfx comes close.
It’s true that certain cameras re-ignite ones passion for photography.
And much as I love my big monitors, looking at a 69 or 617 Velvia chrome on a light table when you have finally got it right is very hard to beat.

PS: the GF120mm is dazzling. Hard to believe how good it is until you see it on screen!

I've only spent about 3 days in the UK on my way to and from Kenya, so I can't comment too much on weather conditions and large format. I will say, though, that Steve O'Nions seems to make it work pretty well. ;-)

I'm just a really bad amateur photographer but there's some funny parallels in this video with my camera journey. I used to use a Canon Rebel DSLR as my main camera but I started to grow tired of photography while using it due mainly to the size and weight. In an effort to revitalize my interest I decided to go mirrorless and cut down on the size of my gear. I settled on the Fujifilm X-T10 with the tiny XF27mm pancake lens and was hooked with the first 5 shots on my first vacation with it. I upgraded to the X-T30 recently but I still wanted something for "fun". So for the first time in my photography life I bought another camera for as you say "an indulgence". I bought a very old and very used X-Pro1 because I became obsessed with the rangefinder style I've read so much about and the hybrid viewfinder. It's been so much fun I can see myself getting an X-Pro3 one day if the prices ever drop.
Normally I wait for the video to be over before i decide to like. But after the sunglasses bit - thumbs up!!
Thanks for sharing, I think we can all relate to the relationships we form with our cameras. The wonderful thing is we have a collection of images to remind us of our time with them. Cheers, Duade

The panoramic camera will be perfect for spring/autumn landscape's and or cloud photography. Loved this episode
I have close to 30-40 cameras. Before my dad passed he would pick up any camera he found at a secon hand store or if he found a cheap one and give it to me. They are mostly old digital cameras, and pretty useless, but they are a memory of him.
Picking up film reignited photography for myself as well.

Great explanation of your gear (and passion) journey and helped me understand aspect ratio and the effects of it better. As an amateur, it reminds me that I'm glad I haven't jumped into a lot of expensive gear that I probably wouldn't need for my personal goals. Thanks!
I totally understand your reasoning behind Hasselblad 501CM and honestly it touched me. I'm not a professional photographer, always used my phone to shoot photos. Photography never interested me much. I just got into film photography and I have a feeling that it changed my whole life, my view on so many things. Not to sound cheesy, it showed me that sometimes you need to stop. Look around you and think. The manual usage of this camera is so satisfying. I've got a few cameras, some older like Lubitel 166 and Zenit E, and some newer like canon T70 and EOS 300 and the most satisfying for me is the Lubitel. 12 frames, whole manual settings. You can't just shoot it. You must stop, choose correct film, meter the light, set correct exposure, think twice before shooting. It is so awesome in a completely new way for me. That waiting for a developement and that satisfaction every good photo gives! I just started watching your channel and I love it. It gives me great motivation and whole new ideas. Thank you for your work and keep doing it!

Thanks for the video. I was a Nikon shooter for decades, I am now 99% Fuji because the feel and function is superb. That extra 1% is dipping my toe back into Hasselblad. Looking forward to your new images!
I think the word you were searching for at 13:50 was "jaded" and there's nothing like a new method of photography to shake that feeling. But don't blame your old-school approach to getting older. I could be your dad easily, but I'm definitely embracing tech. I'm saving up for an R5, having bought an R6 for video and loving its hybrid capabilities.

Good to hear you’re into older used Cameras Tom. I would NEVER buy a new camera in the same way I would NEVER buy a new car. There are some mega used bargains to be had, and at the rate rival companies bring out new gear these days, new ones are out of date almost as fast as they’re released. My next camera will probably be a 5DS R. 50mp joy for around £1500, and I already have the glass.

I'm with you on tech! Mine feels almost like an overdose of tech and the barrage of social media into our lives. I've got back to paper calendar, printing photos and putting them into an album, painting instead of digital art
I suggest that you keep your Canon 5D IV and place it as a decorative piece since you've had so many experiences with it. I regret selling my old Panasonic G7 with which I created so many films with and with what I started my filmmaking career with. Although I'm into minimizing gear, I think that there are somethings worth keeping for sentimental value.
I switched from Canon to Sony, but Canon will always have a special place in my heart as that was my first camera that got me into photography. Nice video though :) love your work :D

Buying cameras and lenses second hand is how I’ve come to everyI currently shoot with, the Canon R. I feel the same way though, Thomas. Like you, I rarely buy anything brand new.

I recently saw one of those pano cameras on the Photography Online channel. Marcus McAdams is also the proud owner of one of those beasties. He's also a bit of a Luddite when it comes to technology. He still uses a Canon 5DSR. Nice to see that you've become an avid collector during your downtime. That Intrepid is quite the conversation piece. Maybe you can use it for portraits. All in jest. Congrats! I remember the days where you had a 7DMk2 and swore you didn't need anything else :) Buying new cameras just happens if you have the means.... I sold my Canon 7D and 4 lenses in 2014 because I wanted to downsize. I now own 4 Sony cameras, a Nikon FA film camera, 13 lenses (2 need to be sold) - and still want to buy a small point and shoot and a Leica Q2. Shoot what you enjoy - it changes your whole experience...
Every time I see one of these types of videos (GAS), it makes me think more subtractively regarding gear. I'm learning as I get older that I'm happier with less, but to each his own. Thank you for the content.

Brotha! This was a great video. I'm glad I stuck with it 'til the end. I am same as you in some regards, I enjoy film quite a bit more lately (frustrating as hell too) and find myself much more aware of everything. Film costs money, every shutter press comes at a non refundable price. I find myself striving to get better at it, since its more disciplined to get good or great snapshots. Also I swear I own a camera form every brand (maybe not) but I've got a lot and always want a lot more. They are tools and toys in a way for me. I actually grow too love them. Although I have to ask myself sometimes exactly what is this new camera I want going too do for me that one that I already have wont do or wont do as good and do I truly need better or just want a newer model for the sake of getting new just because? I love how you explained in detail why you have all of them. Id love to get to the level your at though someday. Thanks again.

Oh, buy just before release. Been there done that, and not only once! Looking forward to more videos with the medium format Fuji, that system are probably the most interesting going-ons in the photo world, for the moment.

I have to admit I am surprised that you are going to sell the Canon, I would think you put on a shelf for nostalgia reasons. I still have my Nikon D5300 which was my first DSLR, it taught me so much about photography and even though I don’t use it all anymore I just couldn’t let it go.

I too love hanging onto my old stuff. Lucky for me, my entry level bodies I was able to give them to my two kids otherwise, I would probably still have them. Like Tom Heaton, I still love my 5d IV and doubt I will ever get rid of it; maybe when I get the EOS R5 but probably not!
@@gregs2466 I have two Canon Ftbs and an A-1, with a dozen lenses. Almost sold the lenses years ago, but when I found they were going for dirt I decided to not sell them. I just recently went with a Sony A7RII, and now I'm shooting with my "vintage" lenses (that are now worth ten times what they were valued at before the advent of mirrorless cameras) and I'm glad I didn't sell them. The Canon bodies (two with non-operational 50mm lenses on them) are now on a bookcase on display, along with a Nikon microscope and a really cool-looking (a lot of copper) Zalman CPU cooler from an old computer build. Old stuff can make interesting bric-a-brac while also serving as mementoes of times past (one of the Ftbs was with me during my time in the military and on climbing trips to the Mt. Blanc range in France, so it has some history behind it).

Can't blame you on the Fujis. I had a 35mm point and shoot film, and my first digital was a 2.0 mp point and shoot. Both did a great job. Been shooting Canon for several years now, but there are a couple of Fujis that i keep almost hitting the buy button. Fun video, keep up the great work.
Like watching your videos and the beautiful places you visit. I have several cameras as well. 5 digital(Sony, Nikon, Canon, Olympus and GoPro 7). Also have a few film cameras I like to take out and use(shoot with from time to time). I live in SE AZ(not far from Tombstone). I also like watching your channel because you shoot(photograph) a lot of your local area. We have a couple National Parks near here(Saguaro National Park and Chiricahua National Monument.) Thanks for sharing. : )
hahaha, as soon as you said you where getting a new camera system I knew it would be Fuji Medium Format. Keep up the good work.
My first digital Fuji was about 30+ years ago and never had one since as batteries only used to last 5 minutes, so stuck with 35mm and medium format until now... And the collection keeps on growing...
Hey Thomas, I’ve just bought the canon 5Dmk4 because of a shoulder issue as it’s a heck of a lot lighter than the canon 1DXMKII I had! That I just sold on eBay! Can’t wait to get out there to try it out properly.

your reason about doing cropping for square and other that you use makes so much sense that does not seem to be mentioned by other people. A nice point to consider when moving to medium format. (same reason NOT go to for medium format for photographers who prefer the wider aspect ratio as well)

The a7r4 seems to be a great camera for landscape and portraits with great weather resistance lots of dynamic range, 60mp, and big selection of lenses from the awesome GM glass to sigma and Tamron who are doing great lenses for the system with a low price tag.

I didn't realize the intrepid was your first step into film. Large format is definitely a much different experience than digital, but I personally have the most fun shooting when I'm using my 8x10, so I look forward to seeing what you create with it!

Great video! We all need that one thing to break the doldrums and spice things up again. I think the word you were searching for was "mechanical" or 'robotic" maybe.
Moral of the tale? It’s what you do with it that counts! Really doesn’t seem to matter what “it” is - cameras, cars, bikes, running shoes, power tools ; for me, it’s guitars, amps and pedals - it’s always the same rationale. It’s the marginal to huge variations in feel, spec, quality, and yes, the self esteem boost, that make that adrenaline pump just that bit harder. Suspect the difference is how we explain ourselves to our life partners. Me, to my shame, have had purchases delivered to work, and then surreptitiously slipped them into the house. If challenged, the response is, “ Oh this? No, I’ve had it for ages. You’ve probably just not noticed...”
Not too proud of the passive-aggressiveness of that, but the implied criticism “perhaps you just don’t care enough to notice”works a treat! PS: may need a sofa to sleep on if this gets out ...
If it assuages your Canon guilt you can rest assured that your channel inspired me to commit to photography more and I ended up purchasing a Canon RF body and lenses. So in a small way your photography is still very much involved in the Canon cameras. Even though it doesn't matter (but it does)... cheers!
Having got a 50R, an XT3, XT4 and a Canon kit (5DSR, 5D4) I can fully empathize with you, Tom. What is worse I've just got a Panasonic S5 as well !!! Just need the restrictions to be lifted to get out and use them once again!
I am looking forward to getting the R6 with some RF glass for two reasons; 1 I shoot people and 2 I like shooting nature. With that being said, I need to get equipment that will give me the portrait sharpness, low light real low light capabilities and sharp picture from edge to edge. My personal opinion, I miss you doing more photography, I little too much filming angles and you don't seem to enjoy your trips anymore (I think is because you're preoccupied on filming too much) your videos are great and beautiful but, remember why you started doing photography. good luck mate, you're still the best!

I went exactly the same way - Nikon for 30 years and now XTs and GFX 50. For anyone who likes having old school dials on their cameras, the 50S is the best of the Fuji MF bodies ergonomically. The combination of sensor and lenses gives a look that is totally different to any of the high MP 35mm cameras - in the best possible way.
