  • The weather is miserable, I am uneasy travelling outside of my local area, I feel stifled as a photographer and my motivation and creativity is at an all time low: 2020 has finally caught up with me. In this video I frankly discuss how I feel about being a photographer with so many restrictions in place. I thought I had evaded the worst of the effects of 2020, but it's clear now that I am starting to struggle. 10% off your first Squarespace website or domain: www.squarespace.com/heaton

    Hey Tom, I’ve been watching your channel for over three years now - you were the very first person to inspire me right when I starting out with photography, and I’ve seen you on all your highs and lows. I experience them too, as I’m sure does everyone.
    I just wanted to say thank you for the last three years. I still love going on adventures with you, whether it’s Iceland or the north east on a drab day. Your images still inspire me and you’re just an all round great guy.
    Never lose the love for what you do, because we all love what you do.

    "Depressing content" you say? Every time I click on your new video I feel that the world slowed down, I'm out of the crazy flow of everything around, I start to breath deeply and I even feel smells of grass/leaves when you walk in the woods/mountains... And the music you use, the piano one - just awesome! This what makes your videos special, you are not trying to be, you ARE who you are.
    So I'm always looking forward to your videos and no matter what - I will enjoy every single one, otherwise I wouldn't be your subscriber for such a long time.
    You do an incredible job, I wish to do what I love for living one day. Good luck and keep going, we are with you! 🙂👍

      That’s interesting. I am feeling the same way as Thomas. I took a break. Told a friend I was in a photography slump and she said well why don’t you shoot things that you normally wouldn’t, like macro. So I did just that. Taking a break and not trying so hard when you are feeling that way helps too.

    • @paynescaping8957

      2020 has become my macro year too. I bought a slider and extension tubes and have been doing stacks of like 80-100 images. Patience and sometimes you get the most wonderful results. I have discovered that there are macro subjects just everywhere if you look hard enough.

    • @Dug6666666
      @Dug6666666 3 роки тому

      Its good to have alternate subject matter when inspiration or circumstances fluctuate. Mine has been urban, particularly industrial areas. In fact I have yet to go back to landscape. It would be hard I imagine to stray too far though when you have established a landscape viewer base.
      I bought a macro lens for the same reason. I think its a huge bonus to photograph what your eye naturally wonders towards, its not fine detail as it turns out for me it seems.

    • @will9357
      @will9357 3 роки тому +1

      I did the same and finally bought a long macro lens, and it took my local environment (I live near Houston, TX) from 'near unshootable' thickets everywhere I look, to having pretty decent potential. This area still isn't the easiest landscape to shoot, but I tend to get a couple shots everyday, even when I'm out doing other tasks.

    Tom what l like about you is that you walk the walk, as well as the talk. You get out there and take pictures. To many other UA-cam photographers lately are just talking the talk. Their whole video is increasingly becoming some sort of philosophical monologue about photography, and their photos are increasingly becoming bland. Talking the talk, but no walk. When most people go to galleries its the image that captures the eye, not the little note beside the image explaining the 'philosophy' behind the image. Keep taking photos Tom it's what you're brilliant at.

    • @freetibet1000
      @freetibet1000 3 роки тому +1

      I agree! For the audience it’s always about the image itself. If it speaks to us, or not. Unfortunately, with the Internet we have all been bombarded with millions of images by now and it’s a real challenge to come back to that “fresh” look on an image again. For me, photography have become more of a tool for me to bring my mind back to be in the moment again and the outcome has become less important, as a result. As a result I still thoroughly enjoy my photography because its more of an exploration than bringing home just another “trophy”. Does that make sense?

    • @vincephillips4331
      @vincephillips4331 3 роки тому

      There's nothing wrong in explaining a journey, and what motivated a photographer to take an image, and this is what l like about your channel is that you do that beautifully, but you don't try to dress up your image if you're not happy with it. No matter how hard it was to be obtained. The trouble is it's when bland images are coupled with some sort of motivational philosophy on how it was created. For me if the image is bland no amount of philosophical chit chat about the image is going to fill the cracks in the photos weaknesses. The image is the bottom line, and not the words.

    All photographers go through these ups and downs, specially when conditions are not the best to shoot regardless of your style or dicipline. But you must consider that it's part of growing as an artist. Everytime you feel down is because you need to step up, move, innovate, and think about what you are creating to make it better.

      When those small depressions hit only thing I can find are excuses not to get out.

      @Pete Melon yes but only when i get really hungry. My depressions are rather short, the really low last a few days or a week then I get back to a more healthy low. You lost your appetite alltogether?

    • @freetibet1000
      @freetibet1000 3 роки тому +2

      The sense of “struggle” may come from the fact that you want something that you don’t have at that moment. For me, a feeling of creativity arises when I leave my mind completely open and don’t expect anything specific to happen. My way of photography is to just put on my rubber boots and walk right out and see what happens! No expectations. If something appears that intrigues me, I take picture of it. If nothing intriguing happens, no big deal! I think, sometimes we are afraid that maybe we will never be able to feel that creative rush again. But the human mind is so changeable that I’m pretty sure it will happen again. The problem only comes when we want to experience a certain thing “on demand” sort of speak, isn’t it?

During 2021 I am hoping to grow further and try and get ready to take the leap and just give photography and go full time in 2022. They include for example being able to use unlocked wilderness cabins which are open to anyone, pick berries and mushrooms, you may wander freely and swim, cycle, canoe, go hook and line or ice fishing and even set up a tent for the night in some places, just staying far enough from homes. You can do this on a private land.

    I’ve been a watcher and then a subscriber to your channel for a few years. Love your videos, tips, but mostly your dedication to the craft! Photography can be a mind-game... in fact I think it is a mind-game for those of us who practice it as a craft - professionally or amateur (that’s me). Just when I think I can find nothing of interest to shoot, I take a walk in a nearby familiar forest or hiking trail and try to open my mind to the endless possibilities around me like I’m seeing it for the first time. More often than not I do what you did in this video - I find something I like and I feel grateful for the simple privilege and experience of shooting it. That recharges me and reinvigorates me. Happy New Year, good riddance to 2020!

    Thank you for the inspiration, I got into photography just over a year ago and without a doubt it's channels like yours that I've gained the most inspiration from. Being stuck in the house only to binge your videos, to admire the amazing places and views you visit really helped when I couldn't get out and attempt the same. I'm 19 now and you've shown me the beauty of photography that is to come if I carry on down this path even with all its up's and downs, eh I guess it's a rollercoaster and I wanna ride it. Thanks a million Tom, keep on inspiring.

    I have to say Thomas, your channel repeatedly resonates with me, more so than any other photography channel here on UA-cam. Your ability to be raw and honest on camera is unparalleled, and it is something that helps me continue on my photography journey. It helps to know that I am not alone in my lows, and that all photographers experience it along their journey, even professionals such as yourself. 2020 has been hard on us all, and the transparency you have in your videos have helped me continue my photography through these hard times.
    I don't often comment on videos, but in the spirit of the New Year, I figured I should thank you and wish you a happy New Year. I too am hoping for change in 2021. Have a good one Thomas.

    I view all your videos, Tom, (I have even bought your book) and this is about the only one I’ve ever stopped early because it was depressing me. But then I had to remind myself that amongst many various photography vloggers you have stood out as consistently resourceful in this, the most difficult of years. For a photographer who has become used to travelling to exotic and exciting locations for your work you have made the very best of what is on your doorstep. You even managed a very engaging project with the light in your garage! So I thank you for your inspiration this year and for demonstrating how, even when circumstances are sub-optimal, opportunities can be sought out. All the best for 2021.

    I think your attitude sums up the attitude of all of us this year. Try to be thankful you at least got to go out on a couple overseas locations. I live in BC Canada and only got a couple weeks off work to go visit Jasper and Banff. During that time too many “staycationers” and forest fires completely ruined any chance of photography. So this year my love of travel photography is coming through you. We love what you do man. Keep doing your thing! Happy New Year!
