    I suggest that you use more grease and tightly pack the washer with it, might have a little more friction but grease keeps water out as it's not a sealed bearing, so the first time some water gets in the side effects start appearing soon.

    • @NiceBikeService
      @NiceBikeService  5 місяців тому +2

      Thank you for your advice. There are different opinions about the amount of grease, if there is too much, it will come out and start sticking to dust and sand

    • @Gromitdog1
      @Gromitdog1 3 місяці тому +3

      @@NiceBikeService The oil will separate from the grease over time and attract dirt, i agree that you should use more and then the grease that gets pushed out will act as a seal. These are low end hubs with no seal that require much more frequent maintenance and i would definitely over pack them with grease.

      @@NiceBikeService One thing that I will shortly bring up with "Bike Shed Boy" , from the United Kingdom is how it feels to lace wheels with progressing osteoarthritis and finger joint spurs . I am only in my 50's . Do you have any opinion on this ? A man broke my left hand and wrist two years ago when I bad a type 2 diabetes low blood sugar seizure similar to an epileptic fit in front of him at his home . I also had one after a very long bicycle ride as I couldn't stop riding easily /safely . The man that broke my bones is demanding a free bicycle and isn't happy for me to build him a red GT Avalanche custom build in his frame size . Frames in his size are hard to find at a reasonable price at the moment . The man won't pick from the collection of good mtb frames that I have in my stock inventory . Nice video.
    Water and dust entering those cups and cones hubs WITHOUT seals are just destroing them.
    "The" solution is to always clean the external part of the hubs each week in case of a duty bike and each time if it rains.
    When you service the internal of a hub WITH seals there is not such things.
    You could add in "the" or "a" method to set correctly the play when tihghtening the cups+counter nut.
    My one is to approach by hand the threaded cup+counter nut to feal if there is too much or not enough play then choose to tighten alternatively the cup to loosen or the counter nut to tihgten the play and I do this with the shaft secured in a vice for ease of interacting on the threade cup + counter nut.
    When you buy a cheap wheel the shaft is always too much tightened resulting in a quick destruction of the threaded cup.
    Balls are very rarely damaged as they are the most solid part.
    Cups inserted in the hub are also rarely damaged as they are bigger than the threaded ones.
    The parts that are suffering the most are the external threaded cups as they are with a smaller diameter ball race.

    Do you also check the pre tension of the ball bearings after the wheel is build in the frame? The quick release axle will give a higher pre tension on the bearings, also depending on how tight you fix the quick release axle.

    • @NiceBikeService
      @NiceBikeService  4 місяці тому

      So, of course, if the wheel is on loose balls, then tighten the nuts a little less, as the quick-release axle presses the wheel

    I'd like to point out that it's best to use something wide when removing metal shields over the bearings. If using a narrow tool the more chance of marring and damaging the seals which are a pain to replace.

      @NiceBikeService  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for the advice. How wide should it be?

    • @trekkeruss
      @trekkeruss 7 місяців тому +3

      It is best to use a plastic tire lever. But in reality, you do not absolutely have to remove the cap. Spraying it with degreaser and using a cotton swab to clean inside and underneath the cap is usually enough.

    • @steelisreal4313
      @steelisreal4313 7 місяців тому

      @@trekkeruss I usually use a plastic tire lever as well. I do have a blind hole bearing puller as well that I will also use but it's pricey and for me was a total impulse purchase. My OCD basically requires me to remove the shield and clean it lol.

      @@cheetocatto01I use a lot more grease than shown here to do the trick. Grease serves three purposes: lubricate, prevent corrosion and seal the bearing. Also, a thick (ep3) grease designed for seaside/marine use (such as marine grease) works better than generic multi use (ep2) grease. Still probably not as resilient as good sealed cartridges, I agree. Cheers!

      @@JavierVargasBGyou dont need to grease sealed bottom bracket bearings but you should put grease at the contact points to keep water and dirt outside, yeah dirt sticks into the surface of the grease but it will cant go farther that that, so it may not even reach the outside of the bearing seals. If you outside bearing bb greasing as a type of sealing is a must.

      @@JavierVargasBGyeah, there can be to much grease but thats really more important at high speed bearings, like engine powered machines. In those to much grease is similar when you try to run in water, its hard. It can cause the bearings to overheat and fail.
