  • The action camera debate has never been hotter than it is right now. With at least two solid brands and multiple camera options it's tough to know where to start. To make things worse, once you actually settle on a camera, there are WAY too many settings to figure out.
    I've been on the GoPro train since the Hero 4 so for me I just stick to what I'm the most comfortable with. In this case that has lead me to the new GoPro Hero 12 for all my "action" oriented filming needs.
    The highest quality point of view shot has always been the goal. For my mountain biking application with the Hero 12 I have narrowed down my field of view options to three different "modes" or "settings."
    Hyperview (standard lens)
    Max Superview (max lens)
    Max Hyperview (max lens)
    There are pros and cons to each and in this video you get an example of each. Let me know what you think is the best view!
    Filmed at the WinMan Trails in Northern Wisconsin. www.winmantrai...
    The bike is a Canyon Spectral 29er and I'm using the GoPro chesty mount with a foam cover on the camera to reduce wind noise.

    Valuable comparison, thanks for doing it. I liked the second run video best. For me, the less the distortion the better, and the more realistic video feels. Keep ripping fellas!

    Ok, here are my thoughts. For context, I'm currently running a GP9 w/ OG Max Lens Mod. I am super happy you made this video, as the temptation of buying the newest GoPro finally makes sense since there's a newer Max Lens Mod. Ok, thoughts...
    #1 Traditional, classic footage. Great since it's 5.3k. You can see the extra crispiness, even though it's uploaded in 4k. Not a placebo.
    #2 I think the best for mountain biking. It's allllll about that horizon leveling. Not only does it look awesome, but you can really see if you're leaning the bike over far enough or not. A lot of times I'll be riding, think I'm cornering like a pro, come home, review footage, and quickly come back down to earth that I'm still a puss and barely leaning the bike, haha.
    #3 Would be awesome for Shorts, IG reels, etc. I don't enjoy seeing that much distortion for longer videos. My eyes concentrated on the fisheye more than the experience of riding the trail. To me, it's actually less immersive since it's harder to keep up with what's happening during your ride.
    I prefer 2, 1 and 3... in that order. #2 is my favorite as it gives me enough sense of speed without it being too distorted or distracting. Definitely a time and place for all 3 settings though!

      Great feedback, totally agree. The max hyperview in vertical POV is great… see my last short.
      Also agree with horizon lock. To me that’s super important. Like you said, it’s cool to get a better sense of cornering in berms. It’s a great balance of wide angle and very little distortion which makes it seem the most realistic.

    Great video/comparison! Another option is to shoot in Max Superview 4:3 and then squish it (using GoPro FX Reframe) to 16:9 and you get something in-between Max Superview and Max Hyperview. Another nice thing about Max SV 4:3 is that it gives you more options than Max SV 16:9 by just capturing more vertical, so even if you don't squish it to 16:9 you can shift your 16:9 framing up or down if needed. Of the three in your comparison I think I like Max HV the best, but it is a little too much (since it squishes the 8:7 to 16:9) ,captures chin and adds too much edge distortion...which is where Max SV 4:3 comes in.

    • @TheDustyDutchman
      @TheDustyDutchman  11 місяців тому +1

      That’s a good call on the 4:3 aspect ratio. I’m gonna try that. Thanks for the tip!

    I'm brand new to the GoPro universe. I like the Max Superview with the Max Lens 2.0 the best. My understanding is that mode produces no compression of the image from top to bottom. It's just a pure, wide angle view with some fisheye distortion. The other two modes, Hyperview with standard lens and Max Hyperview with Max Lens 2.0, both use the 8:7 aspect ratio sensor, but then compress the "7" height down to a 16:9 aspect ratio height. This distorts reality and generates shorter, fatter images.

    btw how durable is the lens itself? would you put a go pro with lens 2.0 in your cycling jersey back pocket without rubber cover or will it scratches instantly?

    • @TheDustyDutchman
      @TheDustyDutchman  7 місяців тому

      Good question. The original max lens seemed to scratch if you looked at it funny. I replaced it twice because of scratches. The 2.0 max lens definitely seems more scratch resistant but I’m so paranoid from past experiences I aways keep the lens cover with me. Inside your pocket is prolly a safe place but again, I’m too nervous based on past experiences so personally i’d throw the cover back on.

    Hello. I have max lens 2.0. There is a difference in quality between the 4k 60 images I took with the original hero12 lens and the 4k 60 images I took with the Max lens 2.0. The image is blurry with the Max lens 2.0, the focus is less, I get much better picture quality without the Max lens, is this normal?

    • @TheDustyDutchman

    I like 2 but there is a strange lens flare or something a little up and right of center frame. Maybe the little guy wasn't clean? 3 is different, maybe too much of a good thing? More isn't always better. Arms, face, sometimes feet coming into frame from all different angles is sometimes distracting. Feels like being consumed by an octopus or something. As the lenses get wider it gets harder to fill more of the frame with the riders you're following. Sometimes real good and stable 3rd person footage of rider in front is the most immersive. Good thing the camera can do it all!
    Feedback you didn't ask for, lol: I want a cropped linear mode that keeps a chosen subject in the center of the frame. I was reading you can record in an 8:7 aspect ratio. I think it would be interesting if it could dynamically frame a chosen subject in 16:9 using all of the 8:7 aspect ratio.

    • @TheDustyDutchman
      @TheDustyDutchman  11 місяців тому

      So it was sprinkling on and off that day so a few drops got on the lens during that clip (of course 🤦‍♂️) I think that’s the flare you’re seeing.
      Totally agree with #3 it’s different, kinda cool, but I don’t LOVE it. It has its time and place but for me it won’t be all the time.
      That’s an interesting thought on the subject tracking inside a 8:7 frame. Totally seems like something attainable with software 🤔
      Thanks for the feedback 👍

    • @AllTorque
      @AllTorque 9 місяців тому +2

      There are a number of factors here. Go Pro has a much wider lens. Most wide angle lenses aren't as optically sharp. The sensor seize however should give you considerable depth of field especially when combined with a wide angle lens. i have no issues with front to back sharpness (depth of field) with any GoPro. Of course GoPro are designed primarily to be used in bright light. In some of these instances light levels are lower. There are trees around and it appears overcast. This will alter the settings of the GoPro. You should control the max ISO and particularly the shutter speed. Most cinematic footage is shot at 24 fps however for really fast moving subjects this may not always be most appropriate. Experimenting with the shutter speed and frame rate will help give a more natural blue to moving shots. You can control the shutter speed on the Hero 12 so setting it to double the frame rate and then controlling the ISO would be a helpful method in these circumstances. The camera won't always make the best decisions for your situation in terms of getting the best quality footage.

    8:44 What ever gives me zero distortion is the one I would use. how's the linear mode? does it have distortion like on Hero 7? or is it improved? I use Go Pro Hero 7 Black with PeauPro87 3.37mm lens. Barely any loss of field of view, and image looks straight. But Hero 7 is useless in sub zero temps. The batteries drain in seconds.

      I use chin cam setup, got Gnartec Ultimate mount. It's great, Alu mount, with rubber, uses two zip ties, secures to any full face helmet. Only thing I have to figure out is a 4k camera setup for winter use without distortion. Go Pro Hero 7 Black with PeauPro87 3.37mm lens has minimal loss of field of view compared to Wide, it's meant to be set in wide mode. But I want the capacity of a big battery and 4k footage. I have to find some footage of Linear mode on Hero 12. Maybe I just have to try it myself. Nice to have two cameras anyway. @@TheDustyDutchman
