i have the 8 Black and i don't see a big progression with the 11 ...the only reason would be the new battery because I use it often in the cold. I think, that GoPro need also a optical stabilization, a bit bigger sensor and more than 130 Mps to capture all details at fast runs.

i am still in doubt, can you let me know how it is holding up? I currently have a hero 9 but want to upgrade to x3 or hero 11 because I need a bigger range of field.
8 Black looked better to me. (At 2:50). Cleaner frames, no overall blur. Viewed on a 4K 10-bit display. Honestly, the Hypersmooth at 8:46 (with 16x ND) seems to me to be too blurry. Noise aside. The motion blur is great, I know that's important for action, but it's (IMHO) too much. I'd dial it back - maybe an 8x ND? Or less? The footage at 10:23 looks pretty good to me (a lot of artifacts, but not super noticeable when playing the video, only when paused). I'm getting an 11, upgrading form a 9. Should be an improvement, and I cannot wait to play with the settings. I primarily shoot flat and grade in FCP, and I've been VERY happy with my 9 settings (from your video a few years ago). Thanks for all the hard work, I appreciate your reviews and info!
What wind muffler are you using? I've looked for all kinds of things: wind diffusers, mini wind muffs, etc. I can't find anything that looks like a mini dead cat/stick-on that seems like it could be cut-to-fit. Help? Other than that, I have an X3 and a Hero11 Mini (plus a ton of others) and got the Mini for my Avata. I wish there was a safe way to put the X3 on my drone (also have a Mavic Pro and Mavic 2 Pro). Too much interference with GPS signal from what I've seen.
I never owned a GoPro before. I’m going for a 1month trip to the Philippines in December and snowboarding in March 2023. I also need an action camera while I do my auto detailing videos. I’m leaning more towards between GoPro10 or 11?. What do you guys think?
I prefer the Audio in the GoPro Hero 11 over the Insta 360. Although the Insta 360 is louder and the voice has more treble, the sound of the Insta 360 is more harsh and more distorted. Sometimes a more dull sound that is more smooth and more pleasant to the ear is better than a crispy but distorted sound.
Hero 8 for the win, lol! The Hero 11 higher shutter speed did look nice though, and would be good for pulling stills out of the video footage, but otherwise I feel like quality isn't improving much now. I think you would see the difference in edge cases such as low light or at higher resolutions, but overall I don't see enough difference. What you're shooting and the story you're telling in a video is going to make a way bigger difference than what camera you're shooting with now.
have you considered the "mini" version of the GoPro 11? it seems to be a great choise considering its most likely lighter and less of a profile (hopefully nice for mounting under the visor)
Excellent review and comparisons as always. Was thinking much smaller upgrades, but the 8x7 and Hyperview modes are killer. Already ordered mine. So which mode do you find yourself preferring for POV? 8x7 with manual editing or Hyperview for the simplicity? Given the nature of your biking shots, Hyperview seems to make sense, but I'm wondering more for general use POV where the distortion is more noticeable.
Nice test, but the camera is a huge dissapointment. Why can't gopro make a camera with a bigger sensor?!? I know mtb'ers are more in need of low light performance than many other sports, but that's basically the only thing that sucks on action cameras these days.
What I learned is that the insta 360 x3 does a pretty dang good job compared to a GoPro while ALSO being a 360 camera allowing you to get fun/creative shots
Just concidering buying a hero 12 to replace my hero 8. When I look at hero 8's horizontal superview FOV it says 122 degrees. When I look at hero 11 and 12 hyperview horizontal FOV, it also says 122 degrees? Is it actually any wider than the older cameras? Or is it just taller and squished? Strangely it seems that hero 11 and 12 superview is slightly narrower than previous models. Possibly to make hyperview look like a better upgrade than it really is?
Waiting for my Insta360 X3 to also test against my Hero10. I also found a UA-camrs that makes an "L" bracket for the X3 so it can sit horizontal on the chesty.
Got the 10, wont upgrade till 14-15 when then the new processor comes out Think if they stay with this processor for 12-13 will end up like 8-9 and crash more and more if the ad new feature like 6k or even 8k
Until they come out with a larger sensor I'm afraid the IS just doesn't work in the dark eastern woods where I usually ride (think Brevard area). It just turns to mush on my Hero 9 no matter what I try, it does however work beautifully in good light, especially out in places like Moab
Both the hero 11 and the action 3 have upgraded bigger sensors, actually first ever sensor size upgrade ever (for the GoPro atleast). So it's a tad larger and theoretically better for low light. Not enough tho)
As trendy as it is to find fault in anything new, I sincerely felt like the 11 neutered the "action" a bit. It's subtle for sure, but ti just seemed to tame down what I was watching while the previous model replicated the speed and captured the experience well. Again, subtle. As far as image quality, I honestly don't think we're going to get better. The ones who aren't as savvy want to look as good as those who are (not a complaint. I'm one of the not so savvy). Not at all a criticism, just observation.
Someone will explain this better, but simplified...if you're opening and closing something over a camera sensor 60 times versus 24 times, more light is going to make it in at the slower rate. There's a limit to that, and it's based on what our eyes can perceive, and some people are more sensitive than others. Light is the friend of the action cams, and it's UNREAL how much better footage from places like Moab and Sedona are than videos shot in dense canopy. It's not even close, and a 1080p video in the desert will look better than 4K in even a moderately dense forest, simply due to that fact. So you could run 60fps in the desert, and get away with it, and it would look "cleaner" without that slight bit of image blur in 24fps. But by contrast, do the same thing in low light, and the 4K 24 would kill the 4K at 60fps in terms of "clean" video...less artifact, noise, etc. It's all related to lighting, and that's a limitation that will forever be present, and they'll continue to try to overcome it.

Thanks for making this video because it further confirms my decision to stick with my 9. I also prefer the color of the 360 vs the 11 because in my opinion it was more natural where the 11 looks a bit saturated and the pine barks was more red and mushy than natural. Again, thank you
Great test, side by side.Thank you. Question for me will be what will be the resolution and aspect ratio of the gopro Max lens mod when used on the 11. I use it in all my videos on my hero 9 en hero 10. Mostly because I want to have super view with horizon lock on (my channel focus on the beauty of the nature I be riding in and less on the action). On the 10 and 9 I use 4:3 aspect ration 2.7 K what is the highest resolution possible.
I'm still rocking the 7, so probably will upgrade again to the 11. Mini looks really interesting. I think I might run the Mini on my chin mount and then keep the 7 for a 2nd angle option.
Good video and thanks for your great effort to put it together. I have never owned any action camera but have always wanted one. For so long I've been following the hay wagon until last week I decided to finally graze. I'm excited to see what I can do with the Hero 11 and the memories I'll be able to create. I just need to make sure the settings are where they ought to be based on other's experiences.
Was hoping you’d test the horizon tracking…I’ve got a Karma Grip and the comfort of knowing the camera will always be level/centered on the horizon, no matter what my body position, is suuuuuper nice. Almost always wanna run the Grip.
Hero 10 is still good if you dont need 10 bit , but grading the hero 11 is so much better. Also I can shoot 1 video both for IG and YT without having to mount my gopro vertically for social media
Preference. Some people like the "artificially fast" lower angle of the chesty, and are OK with losing the ability to see what's directly in front of the tire or through corners, and view that as more immersive. Others like me prefer to see through corners where the rider is looking, and also see what's directly in front of the front wheel, despite it appearing a bit slower. In a nutshell....chesty for a faster "action" look.....chin mount for more ability to see the trail features and a perspective that is more of "what the rider is experiencing." That's my take on it. (After all....our eyes aren't in our belly-buttons!!!) LOL Oh and the obvious one is....the requirement of wearing a full face helmet for chin-mount, and some people hate that. Doesn't bother me....I've seen too many facial reconstruction surgeries from people refusing to wear one because it's hot.
Thanks for the review. Interested in the new built-in horizon lock feature, stabilization and video recording limit. Gopro 10 with max lens mod provided horizon lock but limited up to 2.7k video.
Also interested in how the Hero 11 works with the Max Lens Mod. Would love to know what resolutions and frame rates are supported when the mod is connected.
@@jamaliciousben ....Maybe check on the DJI Action 3? It's 155* FOV....so same FOV as the Max Lens Mod on the 11....and the only limiting factor is 240fps is limited to 1080p, but 120fps is up to 4K...if you're big into slo-motion stuff. So you give up a little there at 240fps vs the 11, but you're gaining resolution at the 155* FOV on the DJI...unless I'm missing something from the specs and reviews I've seen. It's got some slick mounting advantages, NO overheating at 4K 60fps, and a really nice external mic system that is intriguing. I'm starting to swing around toward that one....after years of GoPro use.

for a POV head/chin mount type and sort of multi purpose use (speed skating mainly, skiing and mountain biking) would you chose the hero 11 or the 360x3? I find it hard to make a final decide.
Cheers for all the GoPro Vids, super helpful! Do you happen to know why when you shoot Raw Photos and then go to download them from the GoPro media library (subscription storage) they only come back as a jpeg? I'd love to edit the raw file but I can't find it?
Thanks for the resolution reminder. Lol I always forget.
Thanks! It looks to still be 2.7k with the lens mod.
@@TheLoamRanger okay but will the aspect ratio increase from 4:3 to 8:7. (I hope so)
I'm still rocking the 7, so probably will upgrade again to the 11. Mini looks really interesting. I think I might run the Mini on my chin mount and then keep the 7 for a 2nd angle option.
but you cant swap the battery on the mini, why would you go for that one ?
Can you make a review video on DJI Action 3
Your gopro videos are always cool
Great tests. Thanks for your efforts 😊
Nothing beats a 360 cam! The Insta360 X3 is just awesome! Yes, resolution is lower, but it’s so versatile in comparison!
As a 1st time buyer for my 1st camera would u recommend the x3 or the 11
It's time for GoPro to get their act together. The insta360 x3 is a really good camera.
Great vid, I really hoped you would run through the mini also, I’m after a smaller GP for under visor.
Those won’t come out until late October, so no one has access to the mini for testing. Otherwise I definitely would have!
@@TheLoamRanger yeah I saw that after I commented . Thanks Ryan.
Was hoping you’d test the horizon tracking…I’ve got a Karma Grip and the comfort of knowing the camera will always be level/centered on the horizon, no matter what my body position, is suuuuuper nice. Almost always wanna run the Grip.
That last section looked amazing! I felt like I was there!
What trail were you riding?
maybe next episode can try dji action 2 vs gopro 11 .
I prefer faster shutter. It enables me to make photos out of movie frames that are sharp :)
Hero 10 is still good if you dont need 10 bit , but grading the hero 11 is so much better. Also I can shoot 1 video both for IG and YT without having to mount my gopro vertically for social media
I'm curious about the DJI Action 3 vs the Hero 100, it's like $200 cheaper
Fuck yes, I've been asking for a square(er) sensor for a while. I look forward to when mine comes in.
I really regret when I bought other brand, now i will stick again to GoPro!!!
I’m headed to Retallack Lodge and hope to film. Do you recommend the chin mount or chest mount for the Hero 8?
My worry is that it overheats. I do long dirt bike rides and races. I run through batteries like crazy too.
Awesome review, thank you sir! I'm most excited about the horizon lock, does it mess with the resolution/sharpness at all like it did on the 9?
Thank you so much for posting this, I find these so helpful. To anyone watching, use the affiliate link to support this man!
Thanks man! Much appreciated.
@@jamaliciousben same as before with 2.7k 60 limit with max lens mod. Built in Horizon lock only available in Linear mode. Disappointing.
@@BikingBadwithTC That is disappointing. Guess I won’t be upgrading.
@@willbros1499 You make some compelling points. I’ve been using GoPros for so many generations that it’s tough to consider anything else but maybe it’s time.
Great video, I'll be getting the Insta360 X3
