    For ease of referencing and setting up the maximum shutter angles, this is the recommended max shutter angle/stop conversion math relative to the frame rate you are using. These QR codes can be created here: gopro.github.io/labs/control/maxshut/
    ▶24FPS or 30FPS use a 45° max shutter angle (this is 3 stops)
    ▶60FPS use a 90° max shutter angle (this is 2 stops)
    ▶120FPS use a 180° max shutter angle (this is 1 stop)

      How did you create the reset code, and does the reset code only reset the shutter speed or does it clear all Lab settings?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Рік тому +2

      Great questions. I created the reset code by putting the max shutter angle back to the GoPro default which is a max shutter angle of 360 degrees. Yes scanning the reset code will only reset the max shutter angle code and not any others.

      I would recommend a maximum shutter angle of 90 degrees. That would equate to a shutter speed of 1/200 or faster which should ensure Hypersmooth does not create issues.

    Great video! I was watching another UA-cam video about this ghosting problem, and that video referenced your video, so I checked it out. Not only do you tell us HOW to get the Labs features, but you explain WHY we need them. I'm a new GoPro owner, got my Hero 11 for Christmas 2023 as a Costco bundle. I used it in January at a restaurant and got ghosting despite having hypersmooth turned on. Searching for ideas on how to prevent ghosting, I eventually found out about GoPro Labs. Your instructions were so easy to follow, that I felt satisfied just to get the software downloaded and installed. It wasn't until a week later that I decided to try the recommended setting, and I couldn't believe how easy it was! Just point the GoPro at the QR code on the screen!!! Wow, THAT is EASY! And now I get no ghosting, especially outdoors going from sun to shade. Thanks for a great, detailed tutorial.

    For me the best solution was to get a gimbal, turn hypersmooth off and stabilize using reelsteady :) This way i have an even greater field of view, and don't have so much noise or dark footage because don't have to limit shutter speed. But of course it makes the whole set up a big bigger. For me it isn't' a problem though :) But for people who just want to use the gopro with hypersmooth this is a must (limiting shutter speed), and something that should have been incorporated into the normal Gopro firmware long ago!

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Рік тому +2

      Absolutely. I hope to see GoPro incorporate this as an option in the video menu. Maybe as soon as on the Hero 12. This option could have a simple label such as “Low Light Anti-Jitter” (ok, a bit lengthy of a label 😂) and be located on either the shutter speed or Hypersmooth menu options.
      Yes, I find myself using both Solution 1 and Solution 2 depending upon the situation and scenario. It usually comes down to two questions: 1) Am I using ND filters or in really low light? If so then solution 1 is best. 2) How many miles will I need to carry this equipment?
      Thanks for your feedback!

    In more recent Labs firmware, you can directly set a minimum and maximum shutter speed (this sets limits on the Auto exposure.) EXPX directly set the maximum shutter speed, constant speed, variable angle for change frame rates. So if you did !MEXPX=250, you would have 1/250th of second for a maximum exposure time, but still otherwise full auto for all frame rates. Whereas EXPT sets a maximum shutter angle, the angle constant for change frame rates, but it alters the shutter.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  10 місяців тому +1

      You’re welcome. So if you want to use ND filters for video you’ll likely want to remove the shutter speed max limit as you’ll likely want to use those filters for a slower shutter speed for that motion blur. If you’re using the ND filters for photos or time lapses you won’t need to make any adjustments as the shutter angle only applies to video mode.

      You’re welcome! If you set the QR code to have a max ISO of 1600 that will override your settings. I do recommend a Max of 1600 when using the QR code since the GoPro may need to boost ISO in low light settings due to a slower shutter speed not being an option to allow more light.

    Great video, thanx. 45 or 90 is it a big difference?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks. Yes, this does make a big difference with the lower you go in FPS. For example, at 24 FPS, a maximum shutter angle of 90 is a shutter speed that can go all the way down to 1/96, whereas a maximum shutter angle of 45 is a shutter speed that can only go down to 1/192. If the shutter speed dips to 1/96 there will be ghosting and jitter, but at 1/192 the stabilization should be good enough to prevent nearly all ghosting and jittery.
      If you're filming in 60 FPS on the other hand, you would be okay using a maximum shutter angle of 90 as this would be a shutter speed that can only go as slow as 1/240 and this would ensure good stabilization without ghosting or jittery.

    Another great/informative video on a very important topic. I must admit, I've been too chicken to install the GoPro Labs firmware update. Couldn't you accomplish the same thing by just raising the minimum ISO to something like 800 ISO or higher? That would force the shutter speed to be faster. Right? It's too bad that while your filming the Hero 11 doesn't show what Shutter Speed and ISO it is choosing. You would think that would be an easy thing to add. They could put it on the shortcuts so you could easily turn it on/off.

      Thank you and this is a great question. To some degree yes, you could do that. I have tried that before and had some success. The main problem I ran into with that method was I didn’t know when the shutter speed had dipped again too low that it was creating jitter without me being aware. It also meant I had to use a higher ISO than wanted at time where the camera could have had a lower ISO. Yes, it would be nice to have the live values able to seen.

Secondly, I am not clear how you would change between angles in the field when wanting to choose higher frame rates... I shoot almost everything in 60 or 120 (GP10).... For changing between max shutter angles in the field I simply keep a copy of the 3 stop (45 degrees), 2 stop (90 degrees), and 1 stop (180 degrees) QR codes on my phone so that I can easily bring them up and scan them with my GoPro. This has worked well for me.

      The changes applied by the QR code will override the settings you see in the video preset menus. You can leave the shutter set to auto in your video presets and then apply the QR code and it will override these but it will not show the override since it doesn’t have a way to do this in the menus. Changing the shutter speed from 1/120 to 1/60, the ISO from 100 to 200, or the aperture from 11 to 8 are each an example of 1 stop adjustments to the exposure.

    The stops got a bit too technical for a noob like myself.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  4 місяці тому

      Sorry about not better defining that.
      A “stop” is the unit of measurement for the amount of light that makes up the overall exposure as determined by any of the three values of the exposure triangle. These values include the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture.
      Example: You can increase your exposure by one stop by increasing your ISO from 100 to 200, your shutter speed from 1/60th to 1/30th, or aperture from 11 to 8. Each of these is an increase of one stop to the exposure, which will brighten your footage or image by letting in more light.

    I suppose for those that have problems with jitter and ghosting this would be a viable solution. As for me and my GoPro 10, I've not experienced jitter or ghosting, yet. I hope I don't ever because your solution is kind of technical beyond my understanding.

    WTF, It didn't work. I downloaded onto my micro SD. It did nothing. I tried to scan the QR code. It did nothing. Okay I had to download a free unzip app on my computer and copy and paste it exactly as illustrated. It finally worked. Scanning the QR code gave a red ✓ which I thought should be green. Confusing but the GoPro shows on screen it worked. Not easy!

      The QR code won’t work unless you get the GoPro Labs Firmware installed successfully first. Did you copy the entire extracted “UPDATE” folder to your MicroSD card, insert the card into your GoPro and then power the GoPro on so the firmware will install?

  • @GIMgiriinmoto

    This behavior is not acceptable. With the GoPro Hero 7 and 8 I have never had this problem. Your solution is a remedy to a bad design of the Hypersmooth developed by GOPRO. The action camera was created to be used above all by those who have no photographic knowledge and, I repeat, for me this is a problem never recognized by GOPRO.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 місяці тому +1

      This is not unique to the GoPro. All action cameras-and larger cameras-that use EIS (electronic image stabilization) will experience ghosting and jitter at slower shutter speeds. This is because EIS needs fast enough shutter speeds in order to function properly. Hypersmooth is a type of EIS, just like RockSteady is a type of EIS on DJI action cameras, FlowState is a type of EIS on Insta360 cameras, etc.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 місяці тому +1

      Understanding how EIS works and doesn’t work is important in order to mitigate the weaknesses of EIS.

      If you scan the QR code this will override the shutter speed of Auto in the menu. I added a pinned comment for ease of reference for which setting to set the QR code to depending on frame rate to ensure the maximum shutter angle is fulfilled depending on frame rate.

      Simply providing a solution for those who want to avoid ghosting and jitter without using a gimbal. If ghosting and jitter doesn’t bother you or if you don’t film in low enough light for that to be a problem then you’re set.

    Small sensor?? Why does everybody make excuses for gopro. My cellphone has a tiny camera and sensor. The video quality is vastly better than gopro. Go pro is supposed to be a dedicated camera that only has one job and that is to have good video. And an old webcam has way better quality and is often smaller. I haven't seen even 1080 from a gopro. They claim to have 4k and beyond and mine often looks like 640 x 480.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 місяці тому

      Relatively speaking, action cameras have some of the smallest camera sensors of any camera. Most action cameras also use electronic image stabilization. I see the job of the GoPro as being a camera that provides the ability to capture action in high-quality video. A GoPro does this well when used with the right settings. I expect most would not want to use their cellphone or webcam when participating in action sports. Which old webcam has way better quality than the GoPro? I want to know so I can buy one.

    • @GreatDayForAHike

      @adamr8628 Part of this is probably because of the bitrate that UA-cam compresses many videos to and/or when individuals have uploaded the footage it may have had a lower bitrate.
      My most recent video with sample footage from a GoPro is here. This is from the Hero 12. If you view that video in 4K with the samples I think you’ll find the footage looks better than 1080p: ua-cam.com/video/BKraBoGjn0I/v-deo.htmlsi=Edoka_5q_DeASQkr
