Not much of a fan of flamers in Battletech. Too short range & too little ammo...
But man, nothing quite beats that feeling when your tiny scout-mechs shuts down the Awesome, Atlas or whatever, and nibble it to death with the setting's version of a thousand paper-cuts.
Oh, and 'B' gets my vote!

MWO's flamers are seriously op! They don't use "fuel" per se, but they must be charged much like jump jets.
MWO's flamers has a heat build up and the longer you use them the longer you must wait for them to vent heat. 3 or 4 massed flamers used properly ensures head shots for everyone but your timing and aim must be precise. LOL

Andrew Redburn piloted a Fire Starter against Cockrin's Goliaths as a member of the Davion Light Guard's. A text book use of Lights to take out Assaults. Personally, if I have to use a Fire Starter, I prefer the FS9-O ( omni mech). It's a little bit heavier, at 45 tons, and has more options. As for the vote, I choose C.

Drop flamers, replace with small lasers. Add more armor and you have a mech that melts armor instead of burning trees.

Hello Grim.
Although I do like my heavy Mechs, and mediums, I will vote for A, the Lights. Light Mechs, by their very nature are faster and more maneuverable than the heavier models and types, and can usually maneuver behind the 'thunderfoot' types and play 'assassin' upon them. Groups of lights can easily out maneuver heavier Mechs and take them down using 'pack' tactics like this. Lights are more easily replaced than the more expensive and slower Mediums and Heavies, and usually their weaponry is cheaper to replace as well. This makes them cost effective combatants, with far more 'roles' upon a battlefield than their heavier brethren.

...Though I am a Light Mech guy through-&-through, I vote for option B as medium Mechs are the workhorse of the battlefield.
...Love the Firestarter! It can easily square off with anything in its weight class & come out ahead (I've managed to drop Wolfhounds & Panthers in head-to-head fighting--the former by overheating with Flamers, & the latter by fighting up close since its armament overwhelms a single SRM-4 rack). I was never a fan of the Mirage variant, but in the BattleTech PC game it does extremely well (Jump behind a Thunderbolt or WarHammer & drop them with a single called shot to the Center Torso--shouldn't put ammo there :P ).
...I had a few variants I stuck with:
1) Replace the Machine Guns with 2 extra Medium Laser. While increasing Heat, this vastly enhances its firepower. Once Double Heat Sinks became available, this variant turned absolutely murderous.
2) Replace the Machine Guns with 2 additional tons of armor. Greater staying power.
& 3 ) Replace the Machine Guns with 2 additional Flamers. Not a frequent variant, but able to overheat virtually anything in range--& a full Lance of these will shut down opposing Mechs almost instantly.

Vote B. I have used this mech many times in the past with my home brewed merc company. They are great on woodland maps, especially if you can get the enemy stuck in the brush. Lit the woods up and watch the enemy shut done.

Lets not forget that the Firestarter weighs as much as a WWII Sherman Tank. I remove the Flamers in favor of Medium Lasers, and or, Pulse Lasers plus Machine Guns, at that point it can run with any good Light Mech.

@@GrimDarkNarrator Sorry, I meant to come back and expand on my comment so it was more than just a letter. Mostly I just feel like it's been a little while since the last heavy. You've covered a lot of the older heavy mech designs already, but there are some neat ComStar ones that I'd love to see (e.g. Guillotine and Flashman). Thanks for the videos, they're a very welcome way to spend some time.
