  • One of the TRO 2750 fighters this time. I wanted to use the later TRO 3050 upgrade/revised text but they go too heavily into the World of Blake nonsense and less about the actual fighter so I used the original text which is a bit shorter sadly. Bloody Wobbies.

    'SPAD' is in fact a Very old name in the history of aviation (by the by you did pronounce it correctly lol). It's actually an acronym: Société Pour L'Aviation et ses Dérivés, a French (obviously) aircraft company that operated between 1911-1921, when it then got eaten by another company. A pair of its more famous craft are the SPAD 7 and 13 respectively, both of which were highly praised fighter craft during WW1.

    Legend and rumor speak of three Spads left as the only force to defend the civilian populace during the Siege of Sarna. They were nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity.

    The name sounds stupid... is what I thought at first. But a short search found that it was a homage in many ways to early fighters. It's a good chassis. Very sensible. Thanks for the vid.

    I thought the title said the spaz. Thought we were talking about a Liao.
    Also, imo, the Word of Blake are legitimately the coolest faction in Battletech and my personal favourite.

      They are popular but something I'm not a personal fan of. I prefer the Succession war and Star League era stuff.

    The Spad's modularity reminds of the Mercury and its place as the ancestor of omni mechs, perhaps the spad is the same for omni fighters

      Regardless if they are or aren't the more up to date version of TRO 3050 sometimes spends too much space talking about the Wobbies and not the vehicle it is meant to detail sadly. Some of them just tell you the history and variants etc. Others may as well be full on Word of Blake mini documentaries which would be better suited to a specific sourcebook. Personally I'm not much of a fan of the Blakists. The writing too conveniently makes them all powerful even compared to super warriors like the clans who were the previous big bad of the universe. Just not my pick for best period for me personally.

      Just a free to play or paid Aerotech game would be cool. Imagine having team battles fighting against other fighters, bombers and dropships over worlds or in atmosphere.

    I wonder how complicated it would be to use alpha strike rules to run aero only games? In the vein of aeronautica imperialis or x-wing.

      I don't remember it working like those games which would nowadays be a great template to use for a aerospace game relaunch by Catalyst. As far as I remember it worked similar to Battletech with hex movement and turns. Heat was managed the same way as well.

    Never played with aircraft in battletech. Seems a pretty conventional craft. One thing that never set well with me is scaling in battletech. IRL the M1A1 weighs 70 tons, the F22 has a combat MTOW of 40 tons. So…. Scaling?

    • @CriticalRocket
      @CriticalRocket  2 роки тому

      Weight is argued away as being foam steel so the weight is very different apparently because all the armour and internal metals are made in zero g so they are lighter. Sci-fi excuses and rule of cool you know the way it goes for 80's stuff like this :)

    • @mikewaterfield3599
      @mikewaterfield3599 2 роки тому

      @@CriticalRocket yep, all too well. Kinda like how weapons work in 40k or trek. IRL weaponized laser which ive actually worked with have a definite finite range even in vacuum and must be adjusted for atmospheric conditions. A gauss weapon by contrast would be devastating in a zero G vacuum, friction and heat there from not being concerns. The rule of cool always allows for space magic. It makes things fun.

    This fighter is like the Vedette tank, simple, reliable and worth the C-Bills. Consider the Sherman Tank of old, they built more than 50,000 of them not because it was the best tank around or because it did anything really well. They did because it did everything decent enough, was cheap enough and easy enough to train crews for. The best weapon is the one you can deploy to the battlefield in large enough numbers to be effective. Or as the Japanese tanks of WW2 proved: 'If yours is the only vehicle to show up, it's the best no matter it's specs'.
