I've been meaning to make this video for a while now. I wanted to share some thoughts I've had about the future of Minecraft, Content Creation, and UA-cam in general.
Hermitcraft season 10 is like a shining light in a pitch black tunnel of attention retaining 100 days videos, it’s just refreshing to see others have true fun in a game in situations you can relate to.
@@NoahB955the permits tbh have kept everything down to earth, nobody makin Mega giant shop monopolies. Just minecraftera bartering and selling small stock. And with the pattern of refusing to wear elytras, the close base locations, the Mail system, hermitcfaft feels more primitive, more tight-knit, almost like Minecraft in its early ages
Season 10 is so good! Seasons 8 and 9 were fine but it felt like something was off, but now it's back. I can't pinpoint one thing that changed but it just works again and I love it.
Not a let's play episode, but... I've been thinking about this for a while and decided to make a video on it. Something I forgot to mention in the video - with such an abundance of content being created these days, especially with the rise of AI tools, I think it's more important than ever to promote authentic, human creativity and art. And I hope this "trend" is helping us realize the necessity of it. Hopefully you found this interesting, or at the very least, maybe sort of thought-provoking!
I 100% agree with you. It's hallucinating how drastically different UA-cam is in comparison with what it used to be years earlier. I sometimes wish I could go back and relive those moments once again. Your videos helps me get out of that loop, and I'm thankful for the efforts you've put into your videos so far. :)
That was my first thought when I first started watching Hermitcraft season 10. The way Grian described how he was gonna play the game this season brought my mind straight to this let's play series.
You’re on to something. Even outside of Minecraft, I have been seeing a resurgence of vlogs, and a decrease in love for influencers and celebrities, we are slowly being more drawn to authentic and REAL people. When a regular person plays Minecraft, no one is grinding out 100 days, that’s always been for the videos, it’s nice to see you big guys play like normal, people and enjoy what you do, instead of needing 50 mods to enjoy the cubes
100% agree. I have also been following along with Hermitcraft this season MUCH more than I had in the last few. It's been much more chill, laid back and enjoyable. And I enjoy pretty much all the creators on there in some capacity or another! But I still wasn't watching again until this season. The vibe has been great lately though and just a more enjoyable watch :)
I don't like how wood tools open up the game just like that, and even iron is quite strong. I think the game could use balance or balance mod for that, because once I have my boat I just float away, and the risk for losing your load grows, and the way how it's easy to get back is not fun it's way. I dig mining, but I could do with fishing and keeping up simple shack, and only with some luck get tools to really dig into the ground.
It will die. It's like 3 years between actual content for the game. The only thing minecraft has going for it is people who used to play it getting their kids to play it. They aren't spontaneously getting new players
Honestly, your channel is one of the few out there who stuck out to me as being refreshing. In our age of content creation where every video seems to be made to be consumed by swapping or tapping our screens consecutively, watching your videos by enjoying them for what they are feels like living the rebirth of Minecraft. They are quite a contrast to the hundreds of thousands of videos out there that tries to grab your attention, and it gives me hope for the future of the UA-cam side of this game. The weird thing is that it feels slow paced and relaxed, but at the same time it seems like a lot of hermits are posting more frequently. I guess it's because they're posting less big project vids and more day-to-day enjoyment that they capture and share. I'm sure it will be a mix as the season progresses, but so far it seems like a healthy mix.
It goes slow but it feels so fast, so many things are happening at once, yet they play the game in slow-pace. Less building, more interacting, more socializing. It feels alive, real, and memorable.
Hitting the nail on the head. I really noticed people are longing for more laidback content. No longer wanting the "shouty" content, but more just want to relax and sit back watching people enjoy and play the game at a lower pace. Opposed to the more stress-inducing modded MC stuff I've been playing, my low-paced, plain and simple Vanilla Minecraft playthroughs are the ones actually getting the views and engagement. It's a nice breath of fresh air between the high-paced, high-volume, hyper-active cut up videos that have been filling our timelines lately. (Ofc. there's an audience for that too, and more power to them!) Always nice to hear people talk about the content they enjoy, and with that experience making content that they'd enjoy watching themselves. I aim to work the same way. Great vid!
Ironically, I think UA-cam shorts has kinda helped with the 'retainment based' content. When creators make content that's quick paced and all over the place, they can make a hyper-speed version for shorts, instead of having it fill the home page as if it's a regular video. There's definitely conversations to be had the 'shorts meta,' but I think it definitely helped separate the two types of video, leaving long-form content in a better place.
It is really a wonderful change! In my own Minecraft 'events niche' I'm also seeing videos get longer, more raw gameplay be shown, and there's more video success in correlation to video duration. I'm personally trying out a 2hr+ video for my next release, which 1-2 years ago would've been unthinkable. It's nice and refreshing as a creator. When I first started I really thought high retention editing was the way to go.
To be perfectly honest with you, I missed the old let's plays from back in the day. That's why I watch your videos, I love to just sit back after a long day, watch a video or two and chill. And I love the fact that people see it that way too

i fw this change so much actually. some of my favourite minecraft videos don't have much editing and are just people making jokes, primary examples being pre 2020 skeppy and techno. it genuinely feels revigorating to watch videos every now and then instead of feeling unproductive
Speaking as a 100 days creator. I love telling stories, sharing memories and giving love to small modpacks. Minecraft will always have something new coming to UA-cam. The retention editing is insane these days. Very rare to find authenticity. I appreciate this video so much brother! I am glad I am not only one thinking this. Cheers!
It’s the same reason I like watching itsbreeplays’ Minecraft series. She’s relatively new to the game and you just get to watch her learn and experience the game. Or Pixlriffs’ approach where it’s more of an easy going tutorial/let’s play. It’s just nice and relaxing to watch.
You should also watch RTGame's Minecraft Playthrough. Hes recently returned to the game after like a decade and his vids are really some of the best Minecraft Let's Play I've seen
You bring some great thoughts to the table!!! I’ve noticed that the most beloved content comes from those who genuinely enjoy what they’re doing-editing just enhances it. If the pacing is too quick (such as the 100 Days style of content (in my opinion)), that personal connection is lost and the video simply blends in with everything else, while the creators who keep more of their experience are able to build a deeper connection with their community. I, personally, aim to have fun and make content as a byproduct of what I already love to do-and I think it’s the best way to go about it. Not only is it more fun for the creator, but 9/10 times, it’s more fun for the viewers, too! Keep up what you’re doing, Soup. I’ll definitely be sticking around! ❤️

this is it! ive been trying to put my finger on why the new hermitcraft season and more recent lets plays are hitting the spot for me more now. i’ve really been enjoying brittany broski trying out minecraft for the for at time and seeing the joy of a new player for the first time in years, watching calvin make slow but steady progress in his modded world, and seeing the hermits do things that i could also do (if with a bit less finesse haha) in their episodes. these slower, more personal videos feel like watching your older sibling or a friend play a video game. it’s more relatable, and it makes me laugh and enjoy the journey and story way more than any 100 days video ever did.
Wow. I'm mind blown! You've phrased my feelings in a way I never could have. I've always had these thoughts and the exact feeling but never could figure out why or the answers. I've watched multiple videos, but this is elegantly put and perfectly right.
This is such a subdued and open discussion about the shifting MC content meta, it's great to see it laid out plainly like this instead of drawing a hard black & white line. I've had my finger in the Minecraft pie as a viewer since the original run of X's Adventure, DocM's world tour, Etho's Chocolate Island. I remember at one point The Minecraft Muse/Spumwack rose to popularity showcasing his own homebrew farms and contraptions. Their Muse Farms series is something I would call a "hidden gem" in the annuls of MC content history (a seriously good, down to earth, MC let's play. Worth visiting the playlist for sure!!). This late beta-1.0 release era of videos had such a unique vibe, even when they were coming out there was this air of nostalgia about them. It was a serious sort of "lightning in a bottle" macrocosm of content that just worked because everybody was feeling good vibes and having a good time in and around the pixilated blocks video game. In spite of shifting metas, many of these creators from the early days have changed ALMOST nothing in their fundamental approach to content because there was never any reason to do so in the first place. The sort of "content mill retention machine" that rose to the mainstream started taking off after Pewdiepie "revived" MC content (whatever that means lol). It quickly snowballed into an uncontrollable landslide with the pandemic, and it's not exactly shocking to see some cracks forming in the foundations. The early point Soup makes that the "100 days" concept is itself quite unique and a good attention grab is spot on. The first few videos you look at following that theme are likely very captivating- but at a certain point have probably become noise you just have on in the background more than something you want to give your undivided attention to. In the early days, the content that rose to popularity was "sharing the road" in a manner of speaking. Etho would build a cool farm and then walk through it. That would be the episode, we were all taking the ride together. There might be a discussion going in comments about decorating the area now that the farm was installed, or something more technically minded around optimizing or re-creating the build in your own world. It was this really cool, organic, shared experience instead of a 6 month content dump where all of the resources were farmed, all of the builds were mega and all of the jump-cuts had loud memes spliced in. I DON'T think it's right to say this type of hyper-engagement focused content has run its course. It is probably nowhere close to its ultimate form. What is refreshing about this discussion is that more folks are chiming in and there is clearly an audience for it, that I would argue has always been there. Keep doing what you're doing SoupSoup, each episode of the let's play has really and truly been a throwback to those early MC youtube days. That content has stood the test of time well, so there's no reason as to why this LP shouldn't either.

100% agree, as viewers we want to see someone playing and interacting with the world, not just scripted youtube crossovers and timelapses of them using schematics to copy a creative build into the world. It's too sterile and planned, the beauty of this game is the discovery and the creativity. So glad to see the content shifting to how it was in earlier years
Thank you for distilling these thoughts into a cohesive argument. This largely echos what ive been observing when you started your lets play series itself. I have a lot of thoughts as to why this has happened, but since thats just conjecture, id say that ultimately this is a healthy direction, and o share your positive sentiments. Rendog really did say it best, and s10 really reflects this changed perspective as well. I havent watched rts playthrough, mostly because of time constraints, but he is both a subscribed channel of mine, and that video caught my eye when ive got the chance to watch it. The response has me incredibly intrigued.
I just want to tell you that it was an awesome idea to make this video. I can't express my love engouh for this series you have here, and with dallasmed65 you are my favourites to watch because you are amazed by the game and we can all see it. I feel like the content creators you've spoken of don't realize how viewers can feel the connection that the youtuber has to the game, and the authenticity and joy playing the game just can't be faked. That's why your channel is growing popular, it is because people can see very clearly that you play minecraft for minecraft, and that you let yourself being guided by its magic, and this is exactly what we love and want
Eloquently put! Really hope this is the beginning of a paradigm shift for the MC community and YT in general. Seems we’re all craving more content with humanity behind it and the slower pace really helps bring this element to the forefront.
This approach you are talking about about playing things more slowly and finding relatable enjoyment again is kind of the premise of most of my let's play. I take it slow, without flashy fancy editing all the time, just keep it real and realistic. I tend to call it 'mindful gaming'. Lovely video!
Honestly me personally I love the more chill, laidback and relatable content thus why I’ve started my legacy series just to attempt to inspire people to try to have fun playing Minecraft and not to impress each other and honestly your series has definitely inspired me to do this!
i started youtube because my mental health was deteriorating quickly and it did solve it for ages untill the retention based editting started and ngl i cba to edit that way and i dont want to so im glad minecraft content is starting to retern back to the way it was in 2010 or the og minecraft eara
New sub here. The algorithm blessed me with your video. There's a new generation of Minecraft content popping up. Or should I say old? Anyways, just like you, my hope is that we're seeing a shift in UA-cam as a whole into more genuine content. Stuff that "brings back the magic." I, too, am participating in this. I started a Minecraft Beta Let's Play just over a year ago. And now, I'm seeing success like never before. All I do is sit down and record myself playing and building in Minecraft. And yet, people seem to genuinely enjoy it. And that makes me happy. Here's to an amazing new generation of genuine content!
Don’t sleep of the even more rare MC YT format: the first time blind play-through. Watching @AboutOliver actually figure out how mechanics with no real MC gameplay experience was sublime.
I agree with this so much! I miss the connection to people and their world and there are only so many people’s videos I can consistently watch from start to finish…. I’m so glad I’m not the only one that feels this way! But it’s also probably the main reason why your channel got recommended to me in the first place…. It’s very much my style of video is very relatable and it inspires me in my own Minecraft world! It’s always fun and nice to see successful channels that can be successful playing the game in a similar fashion to the way I do…which in turn of course means your content is enjoyable for me to consume since I feel as though I connect to the person by the familiarity of our play style
The new vibe to youtube can also be seen in vloggers as well. A lot the cinematic vloggers have a more chilled out vibe, with more focus on getting cool shots, music, and story telling. UA-cam is changing, you just have to know where to look. An example of this is lifeofriza, colt kirwan, natalie lynn, wholesomesimon, valspire family, basically that whole group is changing youtube vlogging and it's great!
The fact that more and more channels talking about this, and creating relatable content, goes to show UA-cam, at least this part of it, is moving in a good direction. Really enjoyed your down to earth commentary. Thank you.
Love the video! This is the exact sentiment that led me to create my channel and start creating MC content this year. I still do some fast jump cuts and editing, but I'm just a dude playing Minecraft at my own pace, and I think more people should feel like they can do the same and play how they want to play
2:26 about the respect for the journey. Ironically 100 days, and its predecessor series, 100 drops, were all about the journey. The first 100 drops video was LukeTheNotable landing at salty springs 100 times to try and improve his skills at fortnite. The journey of growth you see is what made the video as popular as it was. The same applies to 100 days. Luke was a complete noob at minecraft in the beginning which reflects in how the first video of his hardcore series was basically just to see if he could survive. It lacked all of the insane goals of modern 100 days. By the end of the video, he was just starting to interact with villagers. Even as he improved, he retained a do it yourself quality which made his videos unique. He wouldn't do things optimally but instead let things be natural. This journey is the reason why his videos have remained popular even as other 100 days content declines. In trying to get the most views, creators lost sight of what made 100 days appealing in the first place.

I'm so glad this is happing in youtube now, I've been scared to make videos now days because their is so much stuff you got to do to get the subscriber, and because of that i start changing my editing style, which i did not like at all, so then it got me into this spiraling mess and i almost gave up on the dream of content creating, but as time has gone on, things are calming down, and it gives me hope that one day i can just chill and do whatever i want without worrying if i bore people, so thank you for fueling the Hope even more.
i agree with this. slower pased minecraft videos are a lot more entertaining and make it easier to inspire your audience to do something similar in their worlds. that is kinda why im taking such a slow approach in my hardcore series, not doing random and insane stuff
nothing to say except, it's entirely true. the crazy minecrafters that make a million block build in episode 2 feels like watching a robot running different channels with different set voices. it doesn't feel like youtube anymore, just, as it was said, a tv show meant for only a digital number.

I love chill Minecraft content, and while the big grand feats accomplished in certain SMPs and worlds can be fun, I have always primarily been interested in the interactions and the STORIES Minecraft has the potential to tell. You see it with Ish’s Minecraft experiment videos. You see it in the Third Life SMP series. And even more laid-back series have a story to tell, boiled down to “Minecraft Player carving out a place in the world for themself.” There’s just something so HUMAN about just sharing experiences and the adventures you can have in this game.

I honestly couldn't agree more with what you said, I'm personally very excited to see how things evolve and to rebuild that authenticity that is rather rare these days on UA-cam. With the likes of HermitCraft S10, and RT's let's play video, and of course your content as well, I can really see a huge shift in perspective away from the (in my opinion a bit over done at this point) 100 days retention based trend. There's something magical in the creation space as a whole when it comes to the real human creativity there is to offer versus just trying to be the most cookie cutter creator. It's the difference between say going to a grocery store and buying a premade cake, versus making a cake from scratch. There's a lot of really good premade cakes out there and the convenience can be nice, but it will only ever really have a certain level of quality / creativity in design when you buy cakes that way. When you make a cake from scratch, of course it is a lot harder and is more of a time investment, but you can be as creative as you want, come up with even better recipes, change your ingredients, make cakes that are terrible, but also make cakes that can and potentially will surpass the quality or interesting flavor or creativity in their design of premade ones. Here's to hoping we see more of this!

You’ve inspired me to take it slower in my own Minecraft world, to explore and to not worry about making progress too fast, to enjoy the process of building my world. sorry, I just started watching the video so this is unrelated, but your base is so cozy looking. (oh I just got to the relatable content bit, haha you nailed it!)
Although some of the huge projects are cool, I personally love the style of content that iskall has been uploading to both vodskall and his main channel because it is so laid back and it feels like he really it just a guy hanging out with friends. I also think the rekrap video where he played Minecraft with his brothers and friends gave off a similar vibe.
I've been doing a let's play in a Beta world that updates every 20 Minecraft days. I'm really surprised at the number of people that enjoy the slower side of Minecraft, where they can have me commentating over my game in the background whilst they're doing other activities, or alternatively they want to play along with me. It's really interesting.
Amazing video, and I do agree I've seen a massive shift in content and it's so amazing to see people get recognized for making something they're passionate about instead of some perfectly cut mini movie. Hope to see more from you!
I think you really hit the nail on the head here! Also incredibly introspective take! I really do hope that the trend of high retention based editing (the fast cutting of breaking blocks / building builds) fades away. It just seemed like it was a race to switch scenes / ideas in order to keep audiences that are more accustomed to short form content, interested. I agree with your points. I enjoy making content but when I go to make a minecraft style video I never liked trying to copy others with the retention based content. Videos like this give me inspo to just say F it and have me want to just make the series Ill be happy with so, thank you!
This is SO GOOD and SO HOPEFUL. I'm looking forward to a new golden age of Minecraft UA-cam- especially since the first golden age is one I was too young and not on UA-cam yet to experience.

I have been kinda out of the minecraft content sphere for a few years now. While I generally dont mind fast paced content, it never really worked for me with minecraft. So hearing this, i might give it a shot again :) I gotta say tho, it is really funny that you seem so happy about things getting more relaxed again, yet your very next video has the classic hyped up youtube thumbnail/title format again xD
I recently started my own series doing longform play - I can't do the fast paced editing I see on a lot of videos. I'm glad the gentler, more slow paced stuff is picking up. I enjoy watching it while working or editing my own videos.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed the shift. I made a spur of the moment uncut let's play of version 1.0 on the day Hermitcraft 10 released and was surprised to be getting dozens or even hundreds of views for content as opposed to retention editing as is possible. (series is on a different channel, this isn't self-promotion). In my post-series thoughts I highlighted Hermitcraft and other gaming trends that seemed to be moving to more "comfortable" content, journey vs destination. I didn't know about RT's new series, that's really interesting and cool. And as a result of my own series, UA-cam has been recommending other smaller creators like yourself, which is very interesting. For me, the prime example of the content shift has been Iskall's second channel, Vodskall, where he's been uploading videos that a couple years ago would have been unheard of due to their lack of "progress content", and yet they have been some of my favourite Hermitcraft X videos (and previously his Hermitcraft Vault hunter videos on Vodskall were my must watch content for december/January).
Bruh I love this. I’ve never got all the flashing lights and throwing money at whatever to make a *good* video. This channel has really showed that you can just be genuine and that’s all people want. I appreciate all you are doing soupsoup have a good dayday!
I've been feeling this for quite a while now, and you just managed to put it all into words perfectly. With so much fast paced, overstimulating and loud content out there, your channel is an oasis. So thank you, I'm gonna stick around for a while.
There's has also been a recent surgence of channels that play minecraft and just talk about life. Channels like flowstate and niko. I like it. This type of content where i can just relax and watch something chill is my favorite. Etho has been doing more chill kind of content for over a decade. His style barely changed. He doesn't even have proper thumbnails and still gets hundreds of thousands of views. Which shows that this kind of content works, people do really like it.
I just started playing minecraft in 2024 when my kid got it for his switch. Now we're addicted. But it's not too much to learn. Our knowledge was built one block at a time, just like our town. And because the mechanics are intuitive, they fit together in your brain as neatly as cobblestone and spruce wood. It's not been overwhelming at all. I learn something new, master it, stumble onto something else, master it, and keep going.
I'm currently in the process of making my first minecraft video and I totally get what you mean. I don't want it to be like a tv show, I want it to be me documenting my progress in a game that I like to play and if other people enjoy watching it, that's a bonus. I'm making something that I'd want to come back and watch later to see what I did, and go like "cool, I did that. I'm happy that I did."
Totally agree. Hermit craft have said for this season no HUGE bases. Just bases… for viewers it is less intimidating. It is nice to just play… with a hint of building a base bit mostly adventures
I'm going to say something a bit wild. Look at all of the changes the many people who made or have ever made content in Minecraft. There's 1 name who's been around since the start and never changed. they may call him "Washed up" but the dude was NEVER irrelevant and he's going stronger than ever. Etho has been such a huge influence as everyone would love the stability he has and only now are realising how he has it. Just a person, Enjoying the game and taking their audience with them on the journey.

This video sums it up perfectly. With the explosion of TikTok, every other social media company was trying to become TikTok. The reasons people go to UA-cam aren't the same reasons people watch UA-cam tho and the focus on retention-based content destroyed a lot of UA-cam's essence. As a long-time MCYT watcher (tho I did go thru phases in and out of the space and especially during the TikTok era), it became so frustrating to see UA-cam go full-in on retention-based content. The recommended page didn't even show they UA-camrs I was subscribed to half the time and I wouldn't realize a new video has been posted until I actually went hunting for one. What UA-cam failed to understand is that a lot of us aren't watching for the video/topic/game, but we watch for the person we chose to subscribe to. Even if their content isn't consistent, it's often their personality we're drawn to. I think MCYT goes through phases and hopefully we're bringing back the less produced style that highlights the creator more than the game. A lot of that I think is thanks to Twitch because livestreams can't be edited which takes a lot of the work and pressure off of creators' shoulders which was evidently causing burnout in a lot of them. It also brings back the emphasis on creators who build up their viewership from the ground up and shifts away from people who go viral/ have their 15 mins of fame. One of my favorite series will always be How To Minecraft with many of the big time UA-camrs (mostly The Pack) because it was just a bunch of friends playing the game and messing around.
This video is so inspiring and refreshing! ☺ As someone who stopped making Minecraft videos for almost 10 years, and has recently had an urge to get back into it again after reigniting my passion with this incredible game and having so much fun building random stuff. This video REALLY deeply resonated with me. This video has really inspired and pushed me to start again after all these years, and just do something simple, fun and nostalgic instead of comparing myself to all of these other big UA-camrs and feeling like I can't compete with all of the extreme "challenges" and high budget fast paced style of modern UA-cam videos. I totally agree with all of your talking points and wholeheartedly believe UA-cam would be a wonderful place if it went back to its original roots of actual real, chill people having FUN making content they enjoy making! That's a lovely little aquarium. Anyways, something i feel that's really great that you came close to, but didn't bring up, is the community's experience of the game. It has felt like much of the community chases their role models, many try to be a grian, a mumbo jumbo, and vital to doing that is chasing to get the most efficient tools as soon as possible. It's what everyone is doing, after all. But perhaps no longer. And this has me hopeful that this sentiment will change all over. It took ~1 year after the trends started appearing for everyone to start adopting speedrun strats, to seek to chase the megabuild, to build at scale. I imagine if this trend holds true, we may see people dialing back in a year or so. Hopefully, it'll make healthier servers, but I wouldn't bet on that haha.
I agree. There's also the thing that with those 100 or 1000 days huge projects they usually dont show the world at all, viewers get no orientation of what is where, the youtuber just flies everywhere in a few seconds. So there's no connection to the world as well. Like Etho's world is huge and I know many locations & roughly where they are, all just from watching.
Well, this just made it click for me. I've been seeing the change in content over the last few months, and heard people on Hermitcraft and elsewhere talk about it (I even watched the Ren episode of Imp and Skizz Podcast). Though I guess I wasn't really listening to what they were saying and doing. I've been wondering why most of my own videos feel off, but a few are actually enjoyable. I've even decided to move away from trying to build a mega base because of what Iskall had said in a video making sense, but I still have been trying to do these higher production style videos. I now realize, thanks to you, that focusing on production is the problem. Looking back, the videos I enjoyed making and putting out were the ones that I just played the game instead of trying to make it a show. I'm sure it will be hard for me to fully redirect my style, but this certainly pointed me in the right direction. Thank you for making this video

In my server, we don’t even care about going to the End or Nether until resources are required from there. I’ll build a portal once I need soul sand and warped wood, and have a portal design in mind.
Tbh luke thenotables 100 days videos will always be some of my favorite Minecraft content, it was a trend starter for a reason, he actually put creativity and effort into the world. And didn’t progress incredibly fast, he didn’t even beat the ender dragon until the 200 days video!
ive noticed as well that a lot of minecraft channels have popped up, with minecraft gameplay over life commentary. maybe its because of minecraft or the people but its definitely helping the community too. Also, love the video.

Hermitcraft season 10 is like a shining light in a pitch black tunnel of attention retaining 100 days videos, it’s just refreshing to see others have true fun in a game in situations you can relate to.

And with the pattern of refusing to wear elytras, the close base locations, the Mail system, hermitcfaft feels more primitive, more tight-knit, almost like Minecraft in its early ages
Season 10 is so good! Seasons 8 and 9 were fine but it felt like something was off, but now it's back. I can't pinpoint one thing that changed but it just works again and I love it.

Something I forgot to mention in the video - with such an abundance of content being created these days, especially with the rise of AI tools, I think it's more important than ever to promote authentic, human creativity and art. That was my first thought when I first started watching Hermitcraft season 10. The way Grian described how he was gonna play the game this season brought my mind straight to this let's play series.
You’re on to something. Even outside of Minecraft, I have been seeing a resurgence of vlogs, and a decrease in love for influencers and celebrities, we are slowly being more drawn to authentic and REAL people.
When a regular person plays Minecraft, no one is grinding out 100 days, that’s always been for the videos, it’s nice to see you big guys play like normal, people and enjoy what you do, instead of needing 50 mods to enjoy the cubes

100% agree. I have also been following along with Hermitcraft this season MUCH more than I had in the last few. It's been much more chill, laid back and enjoyable. And I enjoy pretty much all the creators on there in some capacity or another! But I still wasn't watching again until this season. The vibe has been great lately though and just a more enjoyable watch :)

I don't like how wood tools open up the game just like that, and even iron is quite strong. I think the game could use balance or balance mod for that, because once I have my boat I just float away, and the risk for losing your load grows, and the way how it's easy to get back is not fun it's way. I dig mining, but I could do with fishing and keeping up simple shack, and only with some luck get tools to really dig into the ground.
It will die. It's like 3 years between actual content for the game. The only thing minecraft has going for it is people who used to play it getting their kids to play it. They aren't spontaneously getting new players
Honestly, your channel is one of the few out there who stuck out to me as being refreshing.
In our age of content creation where every video seems to be made to be consumed by swapping or tapping our screens consecutively, watching your videos by enjoying them for what they are feels like living the rebirth of Minecraft. They are quite a contrast to the hundreds of thousands of videos out there that tries to grab your attention, and it gives me hope for the future of the UA-cam side of this game.

I totally agree especially with the Hermit Craft season 10 being so much slower than normal.
The weird thing is that it feels slow paced and relaxed, but at the same time it seems like a lot of hermits are posting more frequently. I guess it's because they're posting less big project vids and more day-to-day enjoyment that they capture and share. I'm sure it will be a mix as the season progresses, but so far it seems like a healthy mix.
It goes slow but it feels so fast, so many things are happening at once, yet they play the game in slow-pace. Less building, more interacting, more socializing. It feels alive, real, and memorable.

Hitting the nail on the head. I really noticed people are longing for more laidback content. No longer wanting the "shouty" content, but more just want to relax and sit back watching people enjoy and play the game at a lower pace.
Opposed to the more stress-inducing modded MC stuff I've been playing, my low-paced, plain and simple Vanilla Minecraft playthroughs are the ones actually getting the views and engagement. It's a nice breath of fresh air between the high-paced, high-volume, hyper-active cut up videos that have been filling our timelines lately. (Ofc. there's an audience for that too, and more power to them!)
Always nice to hear people talk about the content they enjoy, and with that experience making content that they'd enjoy watching themselves. I aim to work the same way.

Ironically, I think UA-cam shorts has kinda helped with the 'retainment based' content. When creators make content that's quick paced and all over the place, they can make a hyper-speed version for shorts, instead of having it fill the home page as if it's a regular video. There's definitely conversations to be had the 'shorts meta,' but I think it definitely helped separate the two types of video, leaving long-form content in a better place.
It is really a wonderful change! In my own Minecraft 'events niche' I'm also seeing videos get longer, more raw gameplay be shown, and there's more video success in correlation to video duration. I'm personally trying out a 2hr+ video for my next release, which 1-2 years ago would've been unthinkable. It's nice and refreshing as a creator. When I first started I really thought high retention editing was the way to go.

i fw this change so much actually. some of my favourite minecraft videos don't have much editing and are just people making jokes, primary examples being pre 2020 skeppy and techno. it genuinely feels revigorating to watch videos every now and then instead of feeling unproductive

It’s the same reason I like watching itsbreeplays’ Minecraft series. She’s relatively new to the game and you just get to watch her learn and experience the game. Or Pixlriffs’ approach where it’s more of an easy going tutorial/let’s play. It’s just nice and relaxing to watch.
You should also watch RTGame's Minecraft Playthrough. Hes recently returned to the game after like a decade and his vids are really some of the best Minecraft Let's Play I've seen

You bring some great thoughts to the table!!! I’ve noticed that the most beloved content comes from those who genuinely enjoy what they’re doing-editing just enhances it. If the pacing is too quick (such as the 100 Days style of content (in my opinion)), that personal connection is lost and the video simply blends in with everything else, while the creators who keep more of their experience are able to build a deeper connection with their community. I, personally, aim to have fun and make content as a byproduct of what I already love to do-and I think it’s the best way to go about it. this is it! ive been trying to put my finger on why the new hermitcraft season and more recent lets plays are hitting the spot for me more now. i’ve really been enjoying brittany broski trying out minecraft for the for at time and seeing the joy of a new player for the first time in years, watching calvin make slow but steady progress in his modded world, and seeing the hermits do things that i could also do (if with a bit less finesse haha) in their episodes.
these slower, more personal videos feel like watching your older sibling or a friend play a video game. it’s more relatable, and it makes me laugh and enjoy the journey and story way more than any 100 days video ever did.
Wow. I'm mind blown! You've phrased my feelings in a way I never could have. I've always had these thoughts and the exact feeling but never could figure out why or the answers. I've watched multiple videos, but this is elegantly put and perfectly right.
This is such a subdued and open discussion about the shifting MC content meta, it's great to see it laid out plainly like this instead of drawing a hard black & white line. I've had my finger in the Minecraft pie as a viewer since the original run of X's Adventure, DocM's world tour, Etho's Chocolate Island. I remember at one point The Minecraft Muse/Spumwack rose to popularity showcasing his own homebrew farms and contraptions. Their Muse Farms series is something I would call a "hidden gem" in the annuls of MC content history (a seriously good, down to earth, MC let's play. Worth visiting the playlist for sure!!). This late beta-1.0 release era of videos had such a unique vibe, even when they were coming out there was this air of nostalgia about them. It was a serious sort of "lightning in a bottle" macrocosm of content that just worked because everybody was feeling good vibes and having a good time in and around the pixilated blocks video game. In spite of shifting metas, many of these creators from the early days have changed ALMOST nothing in their fundamental approach to content because there was never any reason to do so in the first place.
The sort of "content mill retention machine" that rose to the mainstream started taking off after Pewdiepie "revived" MC content (whatever that means lol). It quickly snowballed into an uncontrollable landslide with the pandemic, and it's not exactly shocking to see some cracks forming in the foundations. The early point Soup makes that the "100 days" concept is itself quite unique and a good attention grab is spot on. The first few videos you look at following that theme are likely very captivating- but at a certain point have probably become noise you just have on in the background more than something you want to give your undivided attention to.
In the early days, the content that rose to popularity was "sharing the road" in a manner of speaking. Etho would build a cool farm and then walk through it. That would be the episode, we were all taking the ride together. There might be a discussion going in comments about decorating the area now that the farm was installed, or something more technically minded around optimizing or re-creating the build in your own world. It was this really cool, organic, shared experience instead of a 6 month content dump where all of the resources were farmed, all of the builds were mega and all of the jump-cuts had loud memes spliced in.
I DON'T think it's right to say this type of hyper-engagement focused content has run its course. It is probably nowhere close to its ultimate form. What is refreshing about this discussion is that more folks are chiming in and there is clearly an audience for it, that I would argue has always been there.
Keep doing what you're doing SoupSoup, each episode of the let's play has really and truly been a throwback to those early MC youtube days. That content has stood the test of time well, so there's no reason as to why this LP shouldn't either.

100% agree, as viewers we want to see someone playing and interacting with the world, not just scripted youtube crossovers and timelapses of them using schematics to copy a creative build into the world. It's too sterile and planned, the beauty of this game is the discovery and the creativity. So glad to see the content shifting to how it was in earlier years

This approach you are talking about about playing things more slowly and finding relatable enjoyment again is kind of the premise of most of my let's play. I take it slow, without flashy fancy editing all the time, just keep it real and realistic. I tend to call it 'mindful gaming'. Lovely video!

I, too, am participating in this. I started a Minecraft Beta Let's Play just over a year ago. And now, I'm seeing success like never before. All I do is sit down and record myself playing and building in Minecraft. And yet, people seem to genuinely enjoy it. And that makes me happy.

I agree with this so much! I miss the connection to people and their world and there are only so many people’s videos I can consistently watch from start to finish…. I’m so glad I’m not the only one that feels this way! But it’s also probably the main reason why your channel got recommended to me in the first place…. It’s very much my style of video is very relatable and it inspires me in my own Minecraft world! It’s always fun and nice to see successful channels that can be successful playing the game in a similar fashion to the way I do…which in turn of course means your content is enjoyable for me to consume since I feel as though I connect to the person by the familiarity of our play style
The new vibe to youtube can also be seen in vloggers as well. A lot the cinematic vloggers have a more chilled out vibe, with more focus on getting cool shots, music, and story telling. UA-cam is changing, you just have to know where to look. An example of this is lifeofriza, colt kirwan, natalie lynn, wholesomesimon, valspire family, basically that whole group is changing youtube vlogging and it's great!
The fact that more and more channels talking about this, and creating relatable content, goes to show UA-cam, at least this part of it, is moving in a good direction.

This is the exact sentiment that led me to create my channel and start creating MC content this year. I still do some fast jump cuts and editing, but I'm just a dude playing Minecraft at my own pace, and I think more people should feel like they can do the same and play how they want to play
2:26 about the respect for the journey. Ironically 100 days, and its predecessor series, 100 drops, were all about the journey. The first 100 drops video was LukeTheNotable landing at salty springs 100 times to try and improve his skills at fortnite. The journey of growth you see is what made the video as popular as it was. The same applies to 100 days. Luke was a complete noob at minecraft in the beginning which reflects in how the first video of his hardcore series was basically just to see if he could survive. It lacked all of the insane goals of modern 100 days. By the end of the video, he was just starting to interact with villagers. Even as he improved, he retained a do it yourself quality which made his videos unique. He wouldn't do things optimally but instead let things be natural. This journey is the reason why his videos have remained popular even as other 100 days content declines. In trying to get the most views, creators lost sight of what made 100 days appealing in the first place.

I'm so glad this is happing in youtube now, I've been scared to make videos now days because their is so much stuff you got to do to get the subscriber, and because of that i start changing my editing style, which i did not like at all, so then it got me into this spiraling mess and i almost gave up on the dream of content creating, but as time has gone on, things are calming down, and it gives me hope that one day i can just chill and do whatever i want without worrying if i bore people, so thank you for fueling the Hope even more.

the crazy minecrafters that make a million block build in episode 2 feels like watching a robot running different channels with different set voices. it doesn't feel like youtube anymore, just, as it was said, a tv show meant for only a digital number.

I love chill Minecraft content, and while the big grand feats accomplished in certain SMPs and worlds can be fun, I have always primarily been interested in the interactions and the STORIES Minecraft has the potential to tell. You see it with Ish’s Minecraft experiment videos. You see it in the Third Life SMP series. And even more laid-back series have a story to tell, boiled down to “Minecraft Player carving out a place in the world for themself.” There’s just something so HUMAN about just sharing experiences and the adventures you can have in this game.

I honestly couldn't agree more with what you said, I'm personally very excited to see how things evolve and to rebuild that authenticity that is rather rare these days on UA-cam. With the likes of HermitCraft S10, and RT's let's play video, and of course your content as well, I can really see a huge shift in perspective away from the (in my opinion a bit over done at this point) 100 days retention based trend.
There's something magical in the creation space as a whole when it comes to the real human creativity there is to offer versus just trying to be the most cookie cutter creator. It's the difference between say going to a grocery store and buying a premade cake, versus making a cake from scratch. There's a lot of really good premade cakes out there and the convenience can be nice, but it will only ever really have a certain level of quality / creativity in design when you buy cakes that way. When you make a cake from scratch, of course it is a lot harder and is more of a time investment, but you can be as creative as you want, come up with even better recipes, change your ingredients, make cakes that are terrible, but also make cakes that can and potentially will surpass the quality or interesting flavor or creativity in their design of premade ones.

Although some of the huge projects are cool, I personally love the style of content that iskall has been uploading to both vodskall and his main channel because it is so laid back and it feels like he really it just a guy hanging out with friends. I also think the rekrap video where he played Minecraft with his brothers and friends gave off a similar vibe.
I've been doing a let's play in a Beta world that updates every 20 Minecraft days. I'm really surprised at the number of people that enjoy the slower side of Minecraft, where they can have me commentating over my game in the background whilst they're doing other activities, or alternatively they want to play along with me. It's really interesting.

I think you really hit the nail on the head here! Also incredibly introspective take! I really do hope that the trend of high retention based editing (the fast cutting of breaking blocks / building builds) fades away. It just seemed like it was a race to switch scenes / ideas in order to keep audiences that are more accustomed to short form content, interested. Keep up the awesome content homie, im about to start watching your survival series!

I agree with your points. I enjoy making content but when I go to make a minecraft style video I never liked trying to copy others with the retention based content. Videos like this give me inspo to just say F it and have me want to just make the series Ill be happy with so, thank you!

I have been kinda out of the minecraft content sphere for a few years now. While I generally dont mind fast paced content, it never really worked for me with minecraft. So hearing this, i might give it a shot again :)
I gotta say tho, it is really funny that you seem so happy about things getting more relaxed again, yet your very next video has the classic hyped up youtube thumbnail/title format again xD
I recently started my own series doing longform play - I can't do the fast paced editing I see on a lot of videos. I'm glad the gentler, more slow paced stuff is picking up. I enjoy watching it while working or editing my own videos.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed the shift. I made a spur of the moment uncut let's play of version 1.0 on the day Hermitcraft 10 released and was surprised to be getting dozens or even hundreds of views for content as opposed to retention editing as is possible. (series is on a different channel, this isn't self-promotion). In my post-series thoughts I highlighted Hermitcraft and other gaming trends that seemed to be moving to more "comfortable" content, journey vs destination. I didn't know about RT's new series, that's really interesting and cool.
And as a result of my own series, UA-cam has been recommending other smaller creators like yourself, which is very interesting.
For me, the prime example of the content shift has been Iskall's second channel, Vodskall, where he's been uploading videos that a couple years ago would have been unheard of due to their lack of "progress content", and yet they have been some of my favourite Hermitcraft X videos (and previously his Hermitcraft Vault hunter videos on Vodskall were my must watch content for december/January).
Bruh I love this. I’ve never got all the flashing lights and throwing money at whatever to make a *good* video. This channel has really showed that you can just be genuine and that’s all people want. I appreciate all you are doing soupsoup have a good dayday!
I've been feeling this for quite a while now, and you just managed to put it all into words perfectly. With so much fast paced, overstimulating and loud content out there, your channel is an oasis. So thank you, I'm gonna stick around for a while.
There's has also been a recent surgence of channels that play minecraft and just talk about life. Channels like flowstate and niko. I like it. This type of content where i can just relax and watch something chill is my favorite.
Etho has been doing more chill kind of content for over a decade. His style barely changed. He doesn't even have proper thumbnails and still gets hundreds of thousands of views. Which shows that this kind of content works, people do really like it.
I just started playing minecraft in 2024 when my kid got it for his switch. Now we're addicted. But it's not too much to learn. Our knowledge was built one block at a time, just like our town. And because the mechanics are intuitive, they fit together in your brain as neatly as cobblestone and spruce wood. It's not been overwhelming at all. I learn something new, master it, stumble onto something else, master it, and keep going.
I'm glad we're going back to the simple stuff. It makes youtube as a hobby a lot more viable instead of needing to go full time to do well and be seen
I'm currently in the process of making my first minecraft video and I totally get what you mean. I don't want it to be like a tv show, I want it to be me documenting my progress in a game that I like to play and if other people enjoy watching it, that's a bonus. I'm making something that I'd want to come back and watch later to see what I did, and go like "cool, I did that. I'm happy that I did."
Totally agree. Hermit craft have said for this season no HUGE bases. Just bases… for viewers it is less intimidating. It is nice to just play… with a hint of building a base bit mostly adventures

I'm going to say something a bit wild. Look at all of the changes the many people who made or have ever made content in Minecraft. There's 1 name who's been around since the start and never changed. they may call him "Washed up" but the dude was NEVER irrelevant and he's going stronger than ever. Etho has been such a huge influence as everyone would love the stability he has and only now are realising how he has it.
Just a person, Enjoying the game and taking their audience with them on the journey.
I’m trying to apply this on my own channel with especially my streams. This was a very interesting video and shows a lot of what I’m personally going for.
This video sums it up perfectly. With the explosion of TikTok, every other social media company was trying to become TikTok. The reasons people go to UA-cam aren't the same reasons people watch UA-cam tho and the focus on retention-based content destroyed a lot of UA-cam's essence. As a long-time MCYT watcher (tho I did go thru phases in and out of the space and especially during the TikTok era), it became so frustrating to see UA-cam go full-in on retention-based content. The recommended page didn't even show they UA-camrs I was subscribed to half the time and I wouldn't realize a new video has been posted until I actually went hunting for one. What UA-cam failed to understand is that a lot of us aren't watching for the video/topic/game, but we watch for the person we chose to subscribe to. Even if their content isn't consistent, it's often their personality we're drawn to. I think MCYT goes through phases and hopefully we're bringing back the less produced style that highlights the creator more than the game. A lot of that I think is thanks to Twitch because livestreams can't be edited which takes a lot of the work and pressure off of creators' shoulders which was evidently causing burnout in a lot of them. It also brings back the emphasis on creators who build up their viewership from the ground up and shifts away from people who go viral/ have their 15 mins of fame. One of my favorite series will always be How To Minecraft with many of the big time UA-camrs (mostly The Pack) because it was just a bunch of friends playing the game and messing around.
I don't really like 100 days videos but I'll watch it from time to time ❤😊😅
This video is so inspiring and refreshing! ☺ As someone who stopped making Minecraft videos for almost 10 years, and has recently had an urge to get back into it again after reigniting my passion with this incredible game and having so much fun building random stuff. This video REALLY deeply resonated with me.
This video has really inspired and pushed me to start again after all these years, and just do something simple, fun and nostalgic instead of comparing myself to all of these other big UA-camrs and feeling like I can't compete with all of the extreme "challenges" and high budget fast paced style of modern UA-cam videos.
I totally agree with all of your talking points and wholeheartedly believe UA-cam would be a wonderful place if it went back to its original roots of actual real, chill people having FUN making content they enjoy making! Instead of all these fake/forced personalities that have taken over the website trying to outdo each other with the biggest most extreme or high budget videos humanly possible.
Just wanted to say thank you so much for making this. It really resonated with me and inspired me to start a hobby I had so much fun doing as a kid. I just want to have fun and make the kinds of content that I personally really enjoy making again! :)

Anyways, something i feel that's really great that you came close to, but didn't bring up, is the community's experience of the game. It has felt like much of the community chases their role models, many try to be a grian, a mumbo jumbo, and vital to doing that is chasing to get the most efficient tools as soon as possible. It's what everyone is doing, after all. But perhaps no longer. And this has me hopeful that this sentiment will change all over.
It took ~1 year after the trends started appearing for everyone to start adopting speedrun strats, to seek to chase the megabuild, to build at scale. I imagine if this trend holds true, we may see people dialing back in a year or so. Hopefully, it'll make healthier servers, but I wouldn't bet on that haha.
I agree. There's also the thing that with those 100 or 1000 days huge projects they usually dont show the world at all, viewers get no orientation of what is where, the youtuber just flies everywhere in a few seconds. So there's no connection to the world as well. Like Etho's world is huge and I know many locations & roughly where they are, all just from watching.
Well, this just made it click for me. I've been seeing the change in content over the last few months, and heard people on Hermitcraft and elsewhere talk about it (I even watched the Ren episode of Imp and Skizz Podcast). Though I guess I wasn't really listening to what they were saying and doing.
I've been wondering why most of my own videos feel off, but a few are actually enjoyable. I've even decided to move away from trying to build a mega base because of what Iskall had said in a video making sense, but I still have been trying to do these higher production style videos.
I now realize, thanks to you, that focusing on production is the problem. Looking back, the videos I enjoyed making and putting out were the ones that I just played the game instead of trying to make it a show. I'm sure it will be hard for me to fully redirect my style, but this certainly pointed me in the right direction.

In my server, we don’t even care about going to the End or Nether until resources are required from there. I’ll build a portal once I need soul sand and warped wood, and have a portal design in mind.

Tbh luke thenotables 100 days videos will always be some of my favorite Minecraft content, it was a trend starter for a reason, he actually put creativity and effort into the world. And didn’t progress incredibly fast, he didn’t even beat the ender dragon until the 200 days video!
ive noticed as well that a lot of minecraft channels have popped up, with minecraft gameplay over life commentary. maybe its because of minecraft or the people but its definitely helping the community too.
