Ideas for Types of Currency Collections

  • Currency Roundtable is saddened by the death of our friend Dennis Huff who was our guest on Roundtable #6 back in March (see link below to video). Dennis had been fighting a long time illness that finally took our friend and he will be missed. Watch to the end if you wish to read his obituary.
    Currency Roundtable #9 follows a path that Dennis took with multiple collections. This week we have new Panelist Dean from @massabesicgoldandsilver Dean's UA-cam channel is primarily about coins, particularly Morgan Silver Dollars - but he's crossing over in a big way to paper currency and he has several videos on currency. That's right! Banknotes! He offers a great perspective as to what he is collecting. Dean is very well read already after taking the deep dive into currency.
    This month we talk about ideas of what to collect as far as "collections". From Small Size Legal Tender Notes to Large Size Gold Certificates and a lot in-between. It's a great conversation about the possibilities and cross-overs that can be in multiple collections that you put together.

    Is it called Paper Currency or Paper Money? Because it’s not paper at all. But I am a Paper Money Collector and like Paper Money Collecting as a Hobby. The Hobby is called Numismatics and if you collect you are a Numismatist. I also love History and work for a historical society and love collecting a Dollar or Dollars specifically the U.S. Dollar or is it the US Dollar? I have recently started collecting Obsolete Bank Notes or Obsolete Banknotes? Is Banknote one or two words. Today’s currency is made by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and issued by the Federal Reserve Bank which issues Federal Reserve Notes that have a green seal and green serial numbers. At one point in time they issued large size banknotes called Federal Reserve Bank Notes. The Treasury Department used to issue Treasury Notes, Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates, and Legal Tender Notes, United States Notes and National Bank Notes. There were two sizes of U.S. currency. They were the Small Size Banknote, Small Size Bank note and the Large Size Banknote, Large Size Banknote. Before 1996 they were called Small Head Banknotes, Small Head Bank Note and after that they were called Monochrome Bank Note, Monochrome Banknotes.

      1. If Massabesic is a preacher can I rewatch this on Sunday and it counts as church?
      2. If a counterfeit is signed and circulated, does that make it a bank note?

      @PolarCurrency  Місяць тому +3

      Thanks for the kind words - I have a complete man crush on Dean. He is awesome. Will miss Dennis very much. Regarding antique bank checks, stocks etc. I believe the term is Exonumia? Collecting tokens, medals, stock certificates, bonds or scrip. Have to say I have a few items of each of the previous mentioned. For most I have them because they are related to a currency story. It's a good topic to bring up. Pretty sure Silver Surfer has some items like that as well as Dean on the tokens side. It is very niche and that's coming from a currency collector - we are a 1 to 50 ratio compared to coin collectors. Will put it out there for discussion because there is some really interesting pieces. Thanks for the comment and idea.

      @@Ontario100 Well I don't know if I would be considered a collector or not but many years ago I collected about a half dozen or so Gold Mining stocks from the 1800's for the area of Colorado I am in. I was buying from Holabird Americana auctions but the prices started getting a little high for what I wanted to pay.
      I also over the years collected other paper related items of a historical nature from local people. One such piece I have is a hand written legal document transferring ownership of an important stage coach line that controlled the Santa Fe trail from 1859 until the railroads became the main lines.

      @@PolarCurrency Dan, your question surprised me as I thought the topic was very well covered. I've mulled it over and have a few ideas, mostly more on the obscure side. By nature I'm more of a type collector, so I have lots a small unconnected pieces that could become collections. That helped spark the list. In no particular order, uncut sheets, inflationary notes, 1976 $2 stamped first day of issues, mules, WWII currency, odd obsolete denominations, counterfeit detectors. Right now I'm in a national banknote rabbit hole. These can be collected by charter number, or by a type set, or by name (Peter Huntoon collects nationals that have "Peter" in the name).

    Great video and excellent topic! That Bank of Toronto obsolete is awesome! Love the back. I totally get the nervousness of them being potentially counterfeit. Personally, I think collecting notes is different from simply buying what you think is cool. For example, when I attempt to put a collection of notes together I try to acquire notes that have the plain or open series - so 1934 as opposed to 1934A, B, etc. in every denomination (when applicable). Depending on the note itself I try to also get them in the same grade and grade designation by the same grading company. This will ultimately lead to having to potentially wait for a while until that exact note comes up. This is done much easier with the small size more modern notes because they tend to be a lot less expensive. Obsoletes are something I have just started to get into - mainly gathering notes from my town or county or region of North West New Jersey, but also notes that I think are cool and interesting. I wouldn't call this a collection though.

    • @PolarCurrency
      @PolarCurrency  Місяць тому

      Great insight - collecting vs. buying. That is a distinction. Although I have to admit I "buy" random blue and orange World Banknotes (for low cost) because I have a "Blue" and "Orange" note collection - but is that a "collection"? Do I like using "quotes"? I like your plain/standard/no suffix letter way to collect - they are the OG. As for Obsoletes - you have some damn nice ones with great vignettes and I can see how you don't consider them a collection. Thanks for the comment and appreciate the support. • @PolarCurrency
      @PolarCurrency  Місяць тому +3

      Great "random" question. Not that I am aware but my best guess is that it's not worth PCGS/PMG to spend the funds to host, maintain, etc. currency registry sets because not enough currency collectors - we are outnumbered by coin folks by at least 20-1 (and that ratio might be low).

      PMG does. I just don’t know much about it.

    • @roundnshiny
      @roundnshiny Місяць тому +2

      I know, Stu, you talk about how in currency, grading is more important for authenticity purposes and not as much about the grade (as opposed to coins) but I wonder if registry sets would draw more people into currency collecting and grading like it did for coins? After all coin grading started mostly as a service to collectors for authentication. I’m sure there would be a never ending debate as to weather or not that would be “good” or “bad” for the hobby and I would be curious to hear all your opinions on the subject. Maybe a future episode? 🙃
