Find out the history and story behind paper currency. This is not your typical channel. Polar Currency's focus is on paper currency, primarily U.S. currency, but not always. However, there will always be a story - some history if you will. It’s the stories behind the banknotes that have always intrigued me. It’s the history, the people, the artistry, the craftsmanship and beauty that, to me, make banknotes so much more than “money”. I’m no expert in any way but gather information to the best of my ability and hopefully present it in an entertaining way.
The Most Creative Banknote Design Ever! #banknotes #currency #currencycollection
This video explores one of the most interesting and creative banknote designs that I have seen. Can you imagine if this was ever done with U.S. currency? The story picks up in the1970s and the need for Brazil to issue new currency.
This might surprise you but the Second Edition, Second type replaced the Second Edition, First Type. I know, shocker. Inflation in Brazil led to issuing the Second Type along with re-denomination of the currency. The new notes didn’t last long as inflation continued to rise and by 1987 the Second Type was replaced and demonetized by the end of 1987. But who cares about that? This video is about an unbelievably creatively designed banknotes series. Pardon my Portuguese pronunciations please. Are you ready?
Check this out. Are you seeing two portraits on the 100? (Turn note upside down) Or are you seeing just one portrait - twice? The portrait is of Luís Alves de Lima e Silva. He was a Duke in Brazil and was Prime Minister from 1875-1878 and is considered the father of the Brazilian Army. The Reverse vignette continues the amazing symmetrical design. The note depicts a scene of a battle from the Cisplatine War in the late 1820s.
How about the 200? Same thing! Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil. I’m not even going to attempt her you can just read it. Officially she was Empress of Brazil from 1891-1921. TO her credit she abolished slavery in 1888. The Reverse pictorial representation of ex-slaves in the Brazilian countryside. The vignette most likely is referring to Princess Isabel’s Abolition of Slavery.
Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca is pictured on the 500. He was the leader of the
coup that toppled Emperor Pedro II. He became the first president of the Brazilian republic from 1889-1891. The 500 back has a pictorial representation of a meeting of parliamentarians. This is referring to the Proclamation of the Republic coup in 1889.
José Maria da Silva Paranhos, the Baron of Rio Branco is on the Face of the1000 Cruzeiros. In the latter half of the 1800s he was a Brazilian noble, diplomat, author, historian, politician and professor and is considered to be the "father of Brazilian diplomacy". The Reverse has the vignette of a surveyor’s transit, or Theodolite. The instrument overlaps a topographical 1904 map of the final borders between Brazil and Argentina.
And finally the 5000 has the portrait of Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco. He was one of the leaders of the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état that overthrew and ended the Fourth Brazilian Republic and maybe wasn’t such a great guy. The 5000 Cruzeiros reverse has the illustration of a hydroelectric dam [Pause Turnover] the dam is overlaid by satellite dishes both referring to energy and telecommunications technology.
After seeing these notes I had to find out who was behind the designs of these banknotes. Man the Portuguese names just don’t let up is there anyone just named Frank in Brazil? Alright the designer was Aloísio Sérgio Barbosa de Magalhães. A famous Brazilian graphic designer, who, also designed the Second Edition, First Type currency series and his own symmetrical design replaced those. Hard to explain what he really did for his graphic art but the Brazilians love him and celebrate his birthday annually.
Is it called Paper Currency or Paper Money? Because it’s not paper at all. But I am a Paper Money Collector and like Paper Money Collecting as a Hobby. The Hobby is called Numismatics and if you collect you are a Numismatist. I also love History and work for a historical society and love collecting a Dollar or Dollars specifically the U.S. Dollar or is it the US Dollar? I have recently started collecting Obsolete Bank Notes or Obsolete Banknotes? Is Banknote one or two words. Today’s currency is made by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and issued by the Federal Reserve Bank which issues Federal Reserve Notes that have a green seal and green serial numbers. At one point in time they issued large size banknotes called Federal Reserve Bank Notes. The Treasury Department used to issue Treasury Notes, Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates, and Legal Tender Notes, United States Notes and National Bank Notes. There were two sizes of U.S. currency. They were the Small Size Banknote, Small Size Bank note and the Large Size Banknote, Large Size Banknote. Before 1996 they were called Small Head Banknotes, Small Head Bank Note and after that they were called Monochrome Bank Note, Monochrome Banknotes. Silver Certificates.

Great video Dan! Loved the relaxed Dan at the lake. Beautiful notes! I like the ingenuity and “playing card” like design. Great history and a very talented artist. Awesome Dan! Truly!
Thanks Dean - the playing card design...good comparison. Thanks for the support.
Have you all read Lucious Chittenden's New Money of Lincoln's Administration? It is awesome, his own words descibing fractional currency, Green Backs, and the struggles of the time.

nice view from the lake !
It really is a great lake
Interesting notes…but now I’m dizzy with the upside down and flipping of the bills…
What flipping of the bills? And you were already dizzy...thanks GenX!
I dig and dig and can't always find answers thus good! I love your analysis. I used to work at a bank as a teller. These notes would have been a pleasure to use...it would have saved so much time since you didn't have to turn a note 180 to make it right side up. That annoys tellers to this day. It facilitates banking for sure. Love your world videos!
You are 100% correct! Think about how much time would have been saved over the years for the banking industry! I got your email and look forward to hearing from you.
Congrats 🎉 1k Subs 🌟
Thanks much 4Kollector - humbling milestone. Wouldn't do it if it wasn't for people like you.
Awesome design! You aren’t supposed to show people how beautiful Minnesota is in the summer. Everyone thinks it’s snow all year long. They are going to throw you out!
Thanks Stu! It is a possibility I could get my MN Passport revoked. What people don't know is that brother-in-law sprays his place for Mosquitos with basically a bio-hazard suit. One step out of that zone and you die by blood loss in 3 seconds...
These banknote designs have always been a favorite. Thanks for the video on this nice set.
Truly amazing - when I first saw them I had to get the set which is very affordable.
Wow are those cool..... And yet again your video adds more to my list. And it's bad timing because we are 20 minutes away from the Florida fun show...... Let's pray I stay on target and don't alter my goal...... Stay tuned.
Thanks Gunny and good luck at the FUN Show - get the $500!!!!

Thanks and you are welcome! Appreciate the support.
Great video as always!!
Thanks Tony - appreciate the kind words.
Love the scenic background! I appreciate the outside-of-the-box thinking that went into designing these notes, pretty cool. Congratulations on 1k subs!
It was some nice time off with the entire family, even with the son-in-law and boyfriends! And yeah - how far out of the box are you to design that and make it work!!! Thanks for the 1K - nice milestone.

Thanks Big Apple - and I know a little Windex please...
Wow! Those are awesome notes.
They really are and I'm getting behind on your channel and my Toonie Fix!
Which lake are you at?
Secret location that is void of all mosquitos...
Interesting notes, but could only think of how awkward they would be to shuffle and deal.
LOL and right? I still can't figure them out!
I think it might have actually been easier since the notes were always oriented correctly.
Great stuff my friend.👍 (even with a dirty lens). lol 😆 ❤
Thanks Ontario - fun video to do, with a dirty lens.
Great place to be doing a video from. What's on the grill. My family were printers for 4 generations so I am attracted to anything printed. Nice collection Dan. GD

@@PolarCurrency Looking forward to all updates!!!
Hi Dan. Loved the video, well done! I didn’t even know something like this existed. I liked the approach and the notes, although I did see one down side to this approach. I have always viewed currency as an artist’s canvas. This approach reduces that canvas by half in what is a pretty small platform to begin with. But it didn’t really distract from the artistry here.
Sneaky Pierre! Thanks for the kind words and thanks for being Polar Currency's channel first member! Greatly appreciated. Was glad to provide "something" as member bonus and that is you get the early release. Great comment on the canvas size - didn't think about a 50% reduction in space...to an already small space but so true. Thanks for the support and and comment!
@@PolarCurrency I guess that makes us a pair. You are the first channel I have ever become a member of. Why, you might ask? I thought your passion, production quality and content were outstanding. @@user-xq9ke6xl3r Wow - I think I need to connect. I'm starting a new "Money Talk" series similar to Currency Roundtable but aimed at new collectors, specifically coin collectors who are now collecting paper. Just recorded first one with two gents from Florida and Dean from Massabesic Gold & Silver. All came over from coins for positive and negative reasons. I believe it should be OK to collect both - like Ontario100, etc. If you're interested or just to talk feel free to email me polarcurrency@gmail.com - Sincerely appreciate the support and kind words. Thank you sir.
People say coin collecting is dying. I say more coins for me 😂. Being a Christian can be hard at times i have certain beliefs that don't flow well with the modern generation. I get judged for it and thats fine. I believe what i believe and i am who I am. If someone doesn't like what I believe they can go away.
Exactly on all accounts! More coins for you! Thanks for the comment.
HA fees are ridiculous 20% get out of here
But when the note is market priced? I searched a year for the right note at the right (fair market) price - scoured local currency sellers and local & national shows could not find the price I paid, and it was 25% less than on eBay. What does it matter what fees are?
I started this video some days ago, but wasnt able to finish until just now. I've gotta say, I really enjoyed seeing so many cool collections you all have! It was great to see Dean as a guest! I agree with Ontario that currency featuring coins are super awesome. Dan, your currency frames look so cool! I always appreciate Steve's experience and advice during these round-tables. BTW, Dan, i see you're super close to 1k subs!!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks Joe for the very nice comments. Fun to do these and amazing how much I learn! And yep...inching closer.
I’ve been collecting coins for a lifetime. I’m just starting to expand my currency collection, and had no idea so many denominations existed in our history. Most definitely have a lot to learn. Thanks for sharing the info. I’m sure I’m not the only one who had so much more to learn.
Welcome to paper! I’m sure you know that the “collecting” principles are the same. Best advice I could give is take your time, get some books, and collect what you like. Thanks for the comment.
Everything about your videos is impeccable, especially the graphics you use! I feel like I'm watching History Channel, but this is better! I want to see you and Stu traveling to currency shows in a van like Mike and Frank from American Pickers, that would be a great show for History.
Seriously kind words - thank you. Just looking to tell a story that more than “the numbers”. Oh my with Stu! That would be a series!
Couldn't enjoy these talks more, and I love that this video has 1,600 views. There are still people who love history and collecting and great conversation. Thanks again for a great talk.
That’s exactly what we are about. More than just checking off a Friedberg number but know that whatever floats your boat.
Just love this. I love American history. You all have inspired me so much to start some currency collections. The first set I put together is the Mini Porthole-Black Eagle-Chief set. Now I want to collect the 1862 set - at least the $1,2,5, and 10 that are attainable. Just got the 1862 $5 in PMG15 and it's a pretty nice example for what I can afford. Another hunt and journey begins.
Thanks and GREAT collections! Don’t know which I like best?!
I have seen that episode featuring Dennis. RIP Sir.
Yes indeed. Good man.
My Uncle and Aunt, Dave and Louise Hollyer, were on the Andrea Doria when she sank. Uncle Dave and Aunt Louise live into their nineties passing away a little over a decade ago. There is a documentary on the Andrea Doria where they can be seen being interviewed.
Wow! Never thought that someone watching would be related to someone ON THE ship! Incredible! There are many docs. on UA-cam about the Andrea Doria did you ever look? If you find it would love to see the video. Thanks for the comment and glad they were with us for a long time.
@@PolarCurrency This was a documentary I saw on TV in the nineties when I was channel surfing with the girl friend one evening. We came across the documentary and I said, "Wow, that's the ship that my Aunt and Uncle was on that sunk". Low and behold, seconds later into the documentary there was my Aunt and Uncle being interviewed. I jumped up and shouted "That's my Aunt and Uncle!!" The Girl (My nick name for her as she was 16 years younger than me) didn't believe the people on a documentary on TV were really my relatives. Well, a year later Aunt Louise and Uncle Dave visited us in So Cal and I introduced the Girlfriend to them. The Girl was shocked when she finally realized that I wasn't making it up. She commented, "Well, it is unusual to be watching TV and you're relatives come on." Well, ya, it is. Unfortunately, I do not know the title of that particular documentary, but it was a feature length documentary shown on commercial TV in the mid nineties. So if I come across it I will get a link. Awesome pick up! I remember the Seinfeld episode where George was competing with an Andrea Doria survivor on who would get a coveted apartment. They each had to explain how much they suffered and the one who suffered the most got the apartment haha
I TOTALLY forgot about that. Damn - would have been classic to show that in video! Thanks for the comment.
@@PolarCurrency haha I believe George said the Andrea Doria "eased into the water like an old man into a nice warm bath"
I just added one of these as a star. Atlanta $5 from the last Heritage Tuesday Currency Auction. I notice that there have been three Minneapolis $20 as of late on the auction and you know these have a low population report. I hope you and Stu each got one of them.
Wow! A Star of from any Federal Reserve is monster! I have each denomination - of course for Minneapolis. I believe Stu has them all for Chicago. Thanks for the comment!
Very cool story!!! Thank you for sharing with us
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting story!
Thanks Emanuel - fascinating note and story at least to us!
Hi Dan! This right there is an AMAZING video with some AMAZING information!! This banknote and only for 300 $! Incredible!! Gratulation to your purchase!! Best regards!!!
Thanks Roman - it's pretty cool and I though it was a good value!
Wow!!! Dan that’s so incredible! Just to have the notes survive is a miracle in itself….but then to be able to own one of the notes! Spectacular!! You definitely got “the bargain of the century “ with that purchase! Congratulations to you!!! Blessings always my friend! 😊✝️❤️
Betty - you are correct about surviving! Thanks for the kind words and blessing back to you.
@@PolarCurrency Thank you Dan. I’m now subscribed to your channel! 😊🙏❤️
Awesome history and artifact! Great video, PC!
It really is cool. Been waiting to buy one for years.
You had me at the title! hahaha Classic opening! Yes I am a nerd! But not as much as you! ;) I am not sure why I don't own one of these. I've had opportunity as well around the 275-300 range. Fun fact, there is actually a FANCY serial one of these as well! I know the guy who has it and it was finally offered to me for sale for 1400. I passed. It's a 4 digit repeater on a $1 silver. Pretty cool indeed. I did NOT know all the information on the Swedish American Line ship afterward. Wow some name changes! Great video Dan one of my favorites! Thanks for sharing and awesome pickup!
Thanks Silver Surfer and thanks for being a nerd like me - you are good company to be around. I get it. Took me a while and the price was finally right for me - and OK a fancy? But $1400 fancy? But still super cool. Appreciate you letting me have fun with you and you know I enjoy seeing what you come up with next. I ♥ Silver Surfer!
@@PolarCurrency Robert calderman is the owner of it haha. It took him even a while to finally say “ok I’ll consider selling you it” haha. But once the price came I was keen on it.
Awesome, Ill be watching!
Welcome and feel free to binge! Thanks.
I really like the presentation of the whole "set" with the booklet and bix and such. Also, Its cool you're into cruise ships! 😋 Great story, Dan and very qell presented. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Joe - yeah that box set is right up your alley! Thanks for the kind words my friend.
Really like the lucite slab encasement of the note with PCGS label and the whole deal…very tastefully done and makes a really cool display piece! Must have been disappointing to open the safe to not find a dingle gold coin, though 😮
It is a very nice piece - on the shelf behind me! I didn't come across any "disappointed" statement. I think they knew that the first class safe had been cleared out that day in preparation for arrival in New York. I bet there was still hope and and sad faces...but at least there was something in there. Probably why it took so long to figure out what to do with notes and how to make some money back. The cost to encase, box, collateral materials etc, certification cost, seller % had to eat into the profits not even adding in the cost of the actual dive. If every note sold in 2006 for $500 that's 1.8 million. Thanks 4Kollector!
Questionable color HA! That’s awesome 👏🏻 So, the history and research is phenomenal, but it seems like you have an unhealthy obsession with ocean liners 😂🤣 Great video 😎🤙🏼
Thanks Dean and I would call it elevate to questionable obsession. But at least it isn't purple Morgan Dollars!
@@PolarCurrency 🤣 YES! 😆 Awesome as always 😎🤙🏼
Fantastic video! So much more to currency!
Appreciate that!
Thanks Dan, happy 4th of July!
You're welcome and have a great Fourth also!
