  • World War II Axis & Allies Currency is the second video of a two part series. If you missed the first video World War II USA Currency see the link below for the video that covered what the US issued for wartime currency that directly impacted US residents and military personnel. This video answers the question of what did the major military powers issue for currency during World War II? Well, I’m certainly not an expert in this area and most likely have some incorrect and/or missing information. But I’ve researched to the best of my ability to provide a high level overview of examples - not a detailed accounting. Since this is my 50th video I’m celebrating showing 50 banknotes of World War II. I had a somewhat difficult time finalizing my World War II currency concept ideas and I got my inspiration from research for the 1990s currency Smack Down video. I discovered an interesting thread and I pulled it.

Is it called Paper Currency or Paper Money? Because it’s not paper at all. But I am a Paper Money Collector and like Paper Money Collecting as a Hobby. The Hobby is called Numismatics and if you collect you are a Numismatist. I also love History and work for a historical society and love collecting a Dollar or Dollars specifically the U.S. Dollar or is it the US Dollar? I have recently started collecting Obsolete Bank Notes or Obsolete Banknotes? Is Banknote one or two words. Today’s currency is made by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and issued by the Federal Reserve Bank which issues Federal Reserve Notes that have a green seal and green serial numbers. At one point in time they issued large size banknotes called Federal Reserve Bank Notes. The Treasury Department used to issue Treasury Notes, Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates, and Legal Tender Notes, United States Notes and National Bank Notes. There were two sizes of U.S. currency. They were the Small Size Banknote, Small Size Bank note and the Large Size Banknote, Large Size Banknote. Before 1996 they were called Small Head Banknotes, Small Head Bank Note and after that they were called Monochrome Bank Note, Monochrome Banknotes.

I swear when the words "Hi I'm Dan" come out, my wallet runs down the hallway telling my wife a new video of yours has come out. This was an amazing bit of history that I had very little knowledge of. Thanks for putting in all the hard work for us to watch. Congrats on video "50". Now we gotta get you to 1k subscribers.

In the WWII book "American Guerrilla in the Philippines," there's a long description of how the American and Filipino guerrillas made their own currency, printing on any paper they could get with ink made from lamp black and diesel. I wondered if your research would get that detailed--and it did. (The book's author said they didn't worry about counterfeiting because they had all the paper available.)

That really was quite a look at those notes. I have seen some of them, but never that many of them. Makes me want to go through my stamp collection and see what postage was issued around that time besides my set of Overrun Countries set which featured the Flags of 13 countries in full color, they were so advanced in design for the time that the BEP had to collaborate with the American Banknote Company to produce them.

Great video, sir. I've always thought that WWII currency was such a strange occurrence, as the world was in such a precarious situation with counterfeiting, overrun countries, the possibility of many other countries being invaded and then liberated and occupied, and in each case having a need for a seperate currency. And the histories of each of them is remarkable. Some of the Philippine guerilla banknotes have stories of plates being smuggled in via submarine, then a trek over mountains through enemy lines and then printing on whatever paper could be had, and disseminating and being used in secret as having it could get you killed.
Thanks again for a great video!
