Thank for the video. I finally got the time to see it 🙂.
I can’t really see why you are concerned with the stability of the Ultramid. I’ve have used mine in very harsh conditions and it’s super stable in storms and the materials bombproof. With a single tent pole and the triangle construction mids and pyramid tents are in general very stable and I don’t think the soulo should be more stable in windy conditions.
That said I agree about the inner set up with the ultramid might cause problems setting up. Especially with the duo inner I have. I don’t winter camp but the people I’ve seen using the ultramid in winter don’t use an inner tent.

      Hi Jacob!
Yes, I agree with you. And I think everything is relative. When I'm talking about stability and weather resistance I do so out of my own experience. I use the Ultamid a lot and think it's a great tent, but for certain adventures I would recommend the Soulo (or similar tents).
Wind stability is one of the reasons. How easy it is to pitch in difficult terrain and the warmth of the tent are other factors.
I might use the Ultamid on short winter adventures when one can predict the weather. But on long expeditions I go for another tent.
I have a blog post coming up shortly that goes into further details.
      All the best!
      / Magnus

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I've owned both of these shelters Magnus, and consider them completely different. The Soulo has become very popular in recent times, but I do believe that many people buy one simply because of the UA-cam hype, without understanding that it comes at a cost (weight and size). I won't deny though, it is a fantastic tent for proper expedition use- not really optimised for campgrounds and 2km car camps though.
I couldn't get along with the HMG duomid, as it found it too much of a pain to pitch with the inner and outer being separate- it would be much more challenging in wind and rain, and cold conditions. I had durability issues with the mesh inner after very little use, and the weight savings were not really there in my opinion. It is not a 4 season shelter, as you said. Many will disagree, including HMG. I doubt any warranty issues would be easily dealt with in Europe ( in contrast to Hilleberg). The truth is, it's only through personal experience that we can confidently form our opinions. I used a Zpacks hexamid for years that I really loved.

Very true. There's not one perfect tent for everything!
I do find that the Soulo can be worth the extra weight. It's easy to forget but it was a real lightweight option back in the days. 😉

Indeed, I think they complement each other very well.

I'm still torn between these two. I may go with Ultamid as I don't do longer than 4 nights at a time and weight is a bonus. Thanks

Hi Prashant! On shorter adventures I think weight is less important. Go for a tent that suit your needs and the terrain and weather where you travel.

@@MagnusLindbom if I understand you then you recommend Soulo if the weather is windy and chance of snow, correct?

    • @MagnusLindbom
      @MagnusLindbom  Рік тому +1

@@Prashant.Khapane Yes, in cold and windy conditions the Soulo is definitely the most comfortable of the two.

Have never used a pyramid tent, but with the mesh inner on one side, that looks great. What’s the total weight? I’m looking forward to a trip in Padjelanta region next month using my Duplex. But the pyarmid looks even more spacious and easier to. cook inside during bad weather.

Hi Peter! I don't have the weights in my head but the Ultamid is lightweight for its size. I like the extra space in it - and yes - I've used smaller pyramids before. 😉

@@MagnusLindbom Hi Magnus, All in favour of extra space without a big weight penalty. Some have mentioned problems with leaking zips, have you noticed? By the way, I bought the soulo a couple of years ago after seeing it on one of your videos and checking it out. Very happy with it. Bomb proof, but a bit heavy, using for winter or if expecting extreme weather.

The Ultamid does leak a little bit in heavy rain. I'm not to concerned about it however. The Soulo in comparison is 100% waterproof. Glad to hear you're enjoying the Soulo - it's a very versatile piece of gear.
