Everyday on the way to the Gym I pass by a Nissan dealership and see a "British Racing Green" Frontier Pro 4x with a lift kit.....I always think to myself " I could drive that".
Frontier owner here and the lack of telescoping steering wheel and turn radius are my biggest and mostly my only complaints. It lacks some towing and payload of the Ranger, but I honestly don't need those. I doubt many midsize truck buyers do, if they are being honest. The engine is a little thirsty, but, wow, it has amazing power. The closest competitor on mashing the gas peddle is the Ranger. The Ranger's torque and it's mating to it's transmission are truly great. I'd have bought a ranger if it offered all the tech and backseat legroom the Frontier has. Driving experience wise the Ranger and Frontier are the only really great options. The Tacoma gear hunts all over the place and GM is anemic. I test drove all 4, and I had a Tacoma as a rental for two weeks (It is loud and obnoxious in the cabin, and I could not get comfortable), the Frontier really shines on the driving and ownership experience quality. The only reason not to buy the Frontier over the competition is if you TRULY need those couple extra pounds of payload capacity, or just want to sacrifice daily driving for slightly better off-road performance. Also I guess if you have to have a front locker then you are very much limited to the GM or Jeep, and in which case I don't even know why your reading this.
I've had that since Dec. Great first truck and the Baja Storm is a solid color. I hate dealer markup and trying to find a 4x is close to impossible. I got a fully loaded Pro x 48k out the door in TX.
This truck seems very underappreciated compared to rivals like the Tacoma. It's more comfortable, easier to live with (Tacoma owners frequently complain about lacking low-end grunt), and should be similarly very reliable unlike a Ranger or Colorado. I'm not a truck person but if I was looking for a new truck in this size range, the Frontier would be at the top of my list, over the Tacoma. The upcoming Ranger looks pretty good but Ford reliability is all over the place with their trucks and it may not be a good ownership experience especially for the first new model year.
@@lifesAtrip513 That rocks! But anecdotal evidence is anecdotal evidence. The 2017 Colorado has 1/5 reliability according to consumer reports, the 2018 and 2019 models also have the same 1/5 score. Not saying it's unreliable but just less reliable (typically) than the Tacoma and Frontier.
Well think about it, nissan didnt update the truck until last year. Underappreciated because nissan was too damn lazy wasting time thinkng about the next Z. I give no credit to nissan because by next year when the new tacoma colorado and ranger come out, this truck will drop back to the botton of the pile where it has been for over 15 years
Consumer Reports did not give the Frontier a stellar review , However , you guys are light-years better and spot-on with your in depth assessment of a vehicle’s worth … I’d rather trust you for an honest review than any other !!!
My SV 4x4 loaded arrives at the dealership tomorrow. I'm trading in my 2018 Z71 Colorado. Been a Chevy guy my entire life (62 years), but, with the torque converter needing replaced for a second time, I'm done. Chevy should have fixed this known issue. I originally wanted the Tacoma, but, after test driving the SV I quickly changed my mind and knew the SV was a better truck for me than the Tacoma. Not knocking the Tacoma, its a great truck.
I think they’ve done it right here. I had a 2004 Titan when they first came out and found it extremely reliable. The exterior of this Frontier is done right and the interior kept simple, but with the expected updates to infotainment. What’s not to like?
Two of the main reasons that the new Frontier drive so good are the RWD 9-speed transmission that was designed by Mercedes-Benz and the naturally aspirated V6 engine. Regards.
Love the review! I am a big fan of you guys and your takes on products and the industry. I've always been a Nissan truck guy and appreciated them sticking to the formula of being simple, reliable and good quality. Trucks like the Tacoma get all the credit for being "reliable", but when you look at the market data it's not always the case. The Frontier has been #1 in JD Power's vehicle dependability study for the last 4 years and has been a top performer in initial quality studies as well.
Oh. JD Power. They hand those things out like participation awards to those who pay. There's also the problem that almost all new vehicles are reliable for the first few years. That just means they got stuff screwed together right. Looking at Consumer Reports (which doesn't accept payments) reliability ratings for older models finds the Frontier consistently getting 4/5 from 2013-2017. That's quite good, but the Tacoma gets 5/5 from 2013-2016, and 4/5 in 2017. In other words, excellent reliability, even higher than the Nissan. That doesn't mean the new Frontier isn't better, but given how much of it was carried over from the old model, it's probably not equal to the Toyota (especially this year, while the bugs are being fixed).
Once Nissan sorted out the "SMOD" problem, the Frontiers and Xterras have been honest reliable (I'd argue just as reliable as the Tacoma) with the mature VQ powerplant. I haven't been able to drive one of these, but I have owned both the Frontier and Xterra from the previous generation, and yeah the interiors were dated but so simple to use, and everything just worked, and worked very well!
I really think that as of this exact moment, if I needed a midsize truck, this is the one I’d go for. That is, until the Taco gets reworked - at which time I think it will reclaim its crown.
Like a lot of others here, I was split between the Frontier & Taco. This Frontier Pro4X marks the last natty midsized truck probably ever. The Taco will be turned into a hybrid or turbo abomination and you can kiss its reliability and simplicity goodbye. You can look at the new Tundra as an example.
I would love to see an updated version of this as far as Savage Geese’ thoughts on this truck in comparison to the 2024 models that are being released.
I need a new, reliable 4x4 in the next year or two. Unless the new Tacoma turns out to be astounding, this could be it. Old Frontiers have been very reliable. I'd like to think this updated Frontier with a new (and still naturally aspirated) powertrain would still be very reliable.
I think the next Tacoma is going to blow this nissan out of the water. The power will go back to torque first with the turbo 4 and rear suspension going to coil springs is going to improve the handling and ride greatly
I Own a 22 F-150 and had i known that the Frontier would have been this nice i would have looked at one first. In my small town im seeing at least 3-4 different ones on the road pretty often. So people are buying them for sure...See alot of Cheap versions vs PRO-4x models tho, only seen a few of the high end ones.
I like my 2019 Frontier so much I just purchased a 2nd one. I looked at the current 2024 midsize trucks and concluded having 2, 2019 Frontiers would be my best long term option. I'm good for at least a decade now. Add my 2018 370Z and I have everything covered until I won't be driving anymore. For the cost of 1 new full sized Pickup or suv.
Looks like a decent pick for longterm ownership but I guess a Mav would be more for me because a mid-sized would already be stretching what I need. Of course needs and wants... Cheers guys nice video
I loved the way this truck looks. I was in the market for a new truck. Then they didn't offer this with a stick. Then they didn't offer telescoping steering wheel. So now I'm buying a Ridgeline. It's a far better truck in every way that matters (I don't tow, nor offroad).
You ding it for not offering a stick, then you bought a truck that doesn’t offer a stick? Ridgeline are amazing for what they are. Very few truck buyers need HD capability.
@@thatoneotherotherguy Um, I 'had to' buy a truck without a stick. As toyota is the last company to offer it. And the ergonomics of the taco suck balls. (Oh, I think the jeep pickup has a stick option, but I want to own my next truck longer than 6 months...)
Looks like Jack was laughing at something right before he got into the final thoughts. He also wouldn’t buy this truck even though he really likes the price. Great review again guys.
I guess I'm jealous of the Frontier crowd now. Japanese reliability, a good NA V6 and a good transmission. No gimmicks. That's what my 2013 G sedan is, and I really wish Nissan would Frontier the crap out of that old proven design... bring it back, sell "new G's" at a discount. Those VR 3.0's are already hitting junk yards, turbos starve and die.
I actually think this is a well built mid size truck and looks good ! I’m a TRX owner and would really consider this because I don’t like GM and Ford trucks . Great video as well .
I’m not a truck guy, but I think Nissan nailed it with the new Frontier. Nice design inside and out, and modern but without gimmicky screens, controls, and hi-tech features many truck buyers don’t want or need. If I was buying a midsize truck today this is the first one I’d consider.
I know it would be a lot of work, and not to steal Daddy Doug’s thunder, but if you guys had a list of Geese picks I think that would compliment your videos well. You guys already do such a thorough job reviewing that a rolling list of Geese approved vehicles for different segments would be awesome.
Funny thing is I used to like the Doug videos... But it seems like all the cars he always reviews are so over the top and way out of people's price range. Side note when he did start cars and bids... I did so two cars on there. But a year later after he started it I think his content went downhill on his videos. These guys are great they're truly enthusiasts and they really have a depth on their car reviews.
@@mikewaite3746 I still enjoy his content from time to time but it’s definitely more digestible to those that are not so die hard about cars. I never owned a pickup of my own before, as I always used one of my dad's farm trucks when I needed one. However, now that I'm the dad and I'm totally bored with all car news and every test drive leaves me bored to tears, sweating preemptively thinking about all the cheapy high tech parts and itty bitty turbos breaking down, or sad that I can't in good faith expect to afford something really nice AND reliable like that IS500 the channel reviewed twice, I keep coming back to this most decent of decent midsize trucks. How do I convince my wife that I won't get bored with the frontier in five years if the whole reason I want a truck is to escape from the car enthusiast "leveling up' treadmill of excitement, boredom, new car purchase? To be fair, I have kept my cars about 5 years on average before selling and moving on. No debt involved.
I like the simplicity of the lower trim mid size trucks. They’re the size of full size trucks from the 90’s. Full size trucks now are massive. I have a 2019 Colorado LT trim v6 4x4 and love it. No bs over complicated sensor systems or things that will break. This Nissan looked very nice. I’ll keep my Colorado for 15 years hopefully but if I was in the market I’d check out this Nissan.
frontier's seem to be the one nissan vehicle that doesn't have issues. the early models did but anything 2010 and newer in the frontier is bulletproof.
Nissan has generally been pretty reliable so long as its didn't have a CVT attached to it , which for me in Canada isn't a big deal because the manual is generally offer for many models. But yeah they earned that bad reputation with the CVT debacle from 2014-2018.
Grabbed one of these as a rental, it was fun. Felt really slow to me, but I was in Denver. I used to have a 4.0 Ranger from 2007. The frontier felt slower. But I live and drove mine in Minnesota so no altitude issues there. But my ranger got 20 mpg on a good day. When I filled the frontier up, I did the math and got 27mpg. And since it was a rental and I thought it was sluggish I drove it pretty hard. Love these small trucks (although this certainly ain’t small compared to my OG ranger)
When I was a kid Am radio was all you could get in a car from the manufacture. Now that Im an old fart my hearing is shot, so the stereo sound is about the last thing I consider in a truck or car. Easy to use with physical buttons and knobs and no 5000 page tech manual needed, a decent ride, good mpg, and safe is my must have list when I buy.
The one I bought had tons of electronic issues and when you stopped at a light it felt as if it would die and shake like an earthquake all over. I didn't want to take the risk with repairs forever so I took it back.
The only truck to buy if you are a practical person. Looks great too. Tacoma is a close 2nd and gm and Ford are not worth wasting your time and money on. The frontier will last and its infotainment is simple and works. Most infotainment systems make you want to put a fist through them.
even hearing a car reviewer bang on about infotainment makes me rage…Sofyan is the worst. That MF won’t be happy until a 42 inch screen replaces the windshield.
@@robertnagy1902 Lo that's the truth! I get so annoyed when he reviews some working man's truck or economy car and complains about it lacking some upscale features. He expects everything to be packed into every car. Gimme stuff that works, is simple, and won't disappoint!
I’m an Xterra owner. I was really excited when Nissan showed off the concept version of this truck. I think the big issue with the release is: the gas mileage could be better. All Toyota has to do is release a new Tacoma with better MPG rating and it will be more desirable in my opinion. Ford is bringing a new Ranger to market… it will probably have better mpg & I am guessing a hybrid option. I like my Nissan. I just think the Frontier is going to be overshadowed very soon.
I disagree. Nobody is going to like what Toyota put in the new Tacoma. A 4 cylinder twin turbo instead of a tried and true V6. The Frontier is a better choice by far IMO.
@@bc_usayup. These twin spooled 4 bangers going in trucks don’t do it for me. You start adding turbos and upping compression and you’ve got less reliability. I’ll stick with a thirsty and reliable 6.
EDIT: I bought a brand new 2022 Frontier. I’ve owned it for almost a year now. Absolutely LOVE it and zero issues so far! ORIGINAL COMMENT: The old Frontier rivaled the Tacoma for reliability. I'm not so sure that's going to be the case w the new Frontier. Ever since Renault got their fingers in the pie, Nissan reliability has been spotty. The new V6 (introduced in 2021) and the 9 speed trans are a concern long term. I'm a Toyota guy but really, really dislike the current Tacoma. I wish I had more faith in Nissan because otherwise, the Frontier ticks every box for me.
I have a 2015 Xterra Pro-4X which was made in the Canton, MS factory where this Frontier is put together. It has only had two small warranty issues in 90,000 miles, and has been in blizzards and 115 degree Las Vegas summers. The engine is made in Tennessee and the transmission is made in Japan (as per my understanding) and is not a CVT. The VQ engine barely drinks any oil between changes. I use 5W-40 synthetic.
@@povertyspec9651 Exactly. The prior gen Frontier was an awesome vehicle that I had complete faith in. It's the "old Nissan" (a great thing). The 2021 / 2022 is a different story. Renault has their fingers in it and if it's anything like the current Titan or other current Nissan vehicles, it's a hard pass for me. Disappointing that a Japanese manufacturer has such big gaps in their reliability record. Otherwise the new Frontier is an awesome truck...but Nissan's reputation prevents me from pulling the trigger. I'll have to monitor the truck's reliability for several years before I'd even consider the purchase.
OK...I'm eating my own words lol. Just bought a new 2022 Frontier SV long wheel base to replace my 20 year old Tundra. I tow trailers cross country and lost faith in my 20 year old Tundra...due to age and 220K miles on the odometer. A new Tacoma was out due to the sub par drivetrain and a new Tundra was out because of the turbo engine, cartoonish styling and eye-watering dealer markups. Last Japanese truck standing is the Frontier. As I stated earlier, the Frontier ticks every box for me. I'm just concerned about long term reliability. Previous Frontiers have a good track record. Let's hope the new model does too.
The base models feel so much lighter than these loaded crew cab pro4x's and really gotta be one of the best bang for the buck deals these days. Love my 22' poverty spec king cab!
Love the styling of the truck and am an avowed old-school advocate. But perhaps like others, I’d like to see what the long-term reliability of these things are before plunking down my money. That said, the reported reliability of the carry-over V-6 is supposed to be good - don’t know enough about the 9-speed although the reviews by new car/truck testers (like you guys!) indicate that it performs well.
Extremely good honest truck as far as mid- sized it's most bang for the buck right now solid build quality Nissan went all in on both this truck & their new Z sports car to redeem themselves they took the best from ram with billstien suspension & Dana rear front doors from Ford bed step from Chevy the transmission is licensed from Mercedes the audio system by fender & they used better bushings & hardware for durability again it's a great honest midsized truck it's not an iPhone on 4 wheels it's marketed for someone into tough reliable midsized trucks & it's more comfortable than current Toyota & has better soundproofing & feels more planted believe it or not I didn't want to like it at first but they honestly don't get enough credit it's great test drive one you'll see
This video has aged pretty good. The new taco engine is highly questionable and super expensive, the zr2 is wildly expensive and the headlight operates through the infotainment, Ranger is expensive and still a FORD so you know how that goes. Hopefully Nissan keeps this formula going now.
I just wish they did something like the Honda “truck” with that storage/cooler space in the bed. That is sooooo useful. A truck still needs a little “trunk” for… stuff.

well said and I'm glad Nissan is starting to go away from some of the CVTs. The new Pathfinder for example has the same 9-speed which is a good unit from Mercedes

Everyday on the way to the Gym I pass by a Nissan dealership and see a "British Racing Green" Frontier Pro 4x with a lift kit.....I always think to myself " I could drive that".
Dude…I’m having the exact same problem right now. It’s even the same color.
I have a 22’ Pro-4x in Boulder Grey and love it. 🤙🏻
Btw just admit it, it’s better then the Tacoma.
For a frontier lol no thanks

This truck seems very underappreciated compared to rivals like the Tacoma. It's more comfortable, easier to live with (Tacoma owners frequently complain about lacking low-end grunt), and should be similarly very reliable unlike a Ranger or Colorado.
I'm not a truck person but if I was looking for a new truck in this size range, the Frontier would be at the top of my list, over the Tacoma. The upcoming Ranger looks pretty good but Ford reliability is all over the place with their trucks and it may not be a good ownership experience especially for the first new model year.
Hope it keep that way, prices will be always low
My dads 2017 Colorado 4 cylinder has 140,000 miles now, so your basis for unreliability of the Colorado is wrong
@@lifesAtrip513
That rocks!
@@lifesAtrip513 bro got a 4 cylinder Colorado 😭 😭 😭
Well think about it, nissan didnt update the truck until last year. Underappreciated because nissan was too damn lazy wasting time thinkng about the next Z. I give no credit to nissan because by next year when the new tacoma colorado and ranger come out, this truck will drop back to the botton of the pile where it has been for over 15 years

You guys are the best car reviewers and should have 5 million subscribers
I think they’ve done it right here. I had a 2004 Titan when they first came out and found it extremely reliable. The exterior of this Frontier is done right and the interior kept simple, but with the expected updates to infotainment. What’s not to like?
Nissan trucks are slept on
@@Tool0GT92 really?
A ton of quality of life improvements with out throwing the kitchen sink at the thing, keeping the price lower overall. Great idea imo.
That is, until the Taco gets reworked - at which time I think it will reclaim its crown.
idk... if toyota ditches the v6 then it wont reclaim its crown imo. I dont want a turbo 4 for a truck
I personally see Nissan as dirt cheap Japanese ol reliable
yeah, the taco is still rocking those drum brakes in the back in 2022.
Bet money the next gen Taco will be a turbo 4
Like a lot of others here, I was split between the Frontier & Taco. This Frontier Pro4X marks the last natty midsized truck probably ever. The Taco will be turned into a hybrid or turbo abomination and you can kiss its reliability and simplicity goodbye. You can look at the new Tundra as an example.
Your comments about the ranger are spot on. Strong rental car vibes. Feels like you are in a 08 Escape. Great review. keep them coming
That truck is damn good looking and the old school rules
I would love to see an updated version of this as far as Savage Geese’ thoughts on this truck in comparison to the 2024 models that are being released.
My Titan is a beast of a truck. Love it !
I sold my tacoma and bought a 22 pro4x. Best thing I ever did, love it!
I forgot I watched this. I just ordered a king cab pro4x over the weekend. I've never been happier.
@DevilDog53 If it has a bed, it's a truck.
@DevilDog53 If he's buying it to do truck things, that silly distinction is irrelevant. There are no meaningful ways the Ridgeline isn't a truck.
Me too- I wish this engine/trans was in ridgeline though !

That was a really pretty car you have. Looked good from every angle.

I'm already seeing these often , looks good and so cool it's got a big V6 not a strained 4 popper with a tiny turbo yuk

Me being a nerd and enthusiast, I greatly appreciate the depth that these guys go to in some of their videos, even if they’re more “throwaway” cars so to speak.
I'm not in the market for a mid size truck, when that time comes the Frontier will be my first hard look.
Physical controls, minimal gimmicks, I like it.

The words "reliable" and "long time" have not been uttered in the same breath as "Nissan" for a long time
frontier's seem to be the one nissan vehicle that doesn't have issues. the early models did but anything 2010 and newer in the frontier is bulletproof.
Nissan has generally been pretty reliable so long as its didn't have a CVT attached to it , which for me in Canada isn't a big deal because the manual is generally offer for
many models. But yeah they earned that bad reputation with the CVT debacle from 2014-2018.
I would love a Savageese review of best used cars tbh
Grabbed one of these as a rental, it was fun. Felt really slow to me, but I was in Denver. I used to have a 4.0 Ranger from 2007. The frontier felt slower. But I live and drove mine in Minnesota so no altitude issues there. But my ranger got 20 mpg on a good day. When I filled the frontier up, I did the math and got 27mpg. And since it was a rental and I thought it was sluggish I drove it pretty hard. Love these small trucks (although this certainly ain’t small compared to my OG ranger)
"I burn out in other ways," classic goose.
I thought Jack was 44 years old. Not even kidding.
Yeah, nobody believes he's in his mid-twenties. That's come up before. I think it's his voice. It just sounds older.
Like these trucks, the 's' version is what works for me. Less is more! Whatever you choose you can't go wrong. Thanks for your review!
The one I bought had tons of electronic issues and when you stopped at a light it felt as if it would die and shake like an earthquake all over. I didn't want to take the risk with repairs forever so I took it back.
#2 selling pickup in its class, behind the Taco.
I don't think it's forgotten.

I want this truck so much.
The only true review that matters.
It's surprisingly restrained looking for a Nissan, which is a good thing.
Where did this 3.8L V6 originate from, anyway?

The xterra is dead officially. They brought it back in the ME with a v4
I bet if Toyota offered a V6 option along with their new 2.4 turbo most ppl would pick the V-6 in the updated 🌮... Nissan is smart sticking with a V-6
