    I have to say, the lions didn't look very scared. More like the one walking around said, "That's unpleasant. I'll just wait over here then." The other didn't even get up.

      The pilot did not use he correct tactics in scaring away lions. You have to run straight at them while waving your arms above your head and making monkey noises.

      The A380 in the first clip was in turbulence close to the ground. Some pilots would refuse such an approach and go around, but this one decided to continue and complete the landing. It looked perfect to me, but it was theoretically a 'refused' go around.🙂

    • @lauxmyth
      @lauxmyth 2 місяці тому +2

      @@ScottPankhurst I knew what TOGA meant. I would guess if the person filming was a commercial pilot familiar with that model, they could judge the engine by sound. I would guess those are rare sitting in the body of the plane. MrSidestick72 seems to have a reasonable explanation. I no longer trust this channel except for the plane model and where the airport is found -- and I think there have been mistakes on that sometimes too.

    • @LunnarisLP
      @LunnarisLP 2 місяці тому +4

      @@lauxmyth i mean when conditions are bad toga is always used and even in many other cases. flex is nice for smaller planes on very big runways, but otherwise you are cutting into your safety margins a lot anyway (e.g. in case of an engine out event) as it pushes your decision speed further down the runway.

    • @CerberusTenshi
      @CerberusTenshi 2 місяці тому +2

      @@ScottPankhurst Not really. To prolong longevity of the engines, take off isn't done with full power every time. For 2 reasons.
      1. Being gentle on the engines. They are expensive and use on the limit is very damaging.
      2. In case of an emergency, where one engine stalls/gets damaged/has to be shut off/etc. the other engine needs to have some sort of reserve to get the plane up in the air, if V1 has already passed. So TOGA is pushing the engines to their limits for emergency. Normal take off is done in flex, which sets the engine power below the maximum in most situations. The FADEC is intelligent enough, modern engines are powerful enough.

    Thank you for including IranAir's landing in the clip.
    The aircraft had a small hydraulic issue during the approach but pilots, as always, buttered the landing.
    They tried to fix the issue at gate but unsuccessful and because UK does not provide ANY assistance to IranAir planes, they cancelled the return flight that evening.

    • @RomeoJulietCharlie

      Contaminated runways always require a full power takeoff in a jet. Simply being in icing conditions doesn’t automatically require TOGA power.

    • @kbock7383
      @kbock7383 2 місяці тому

    • @CerberusTenshi

    • @RomeoJulietCharlie
      @RomeoJulietCharlie 2 місяці тому

      @@kbock7383 so in something like 5 degrees C and visible moisture, you’d be using full power for takeoff? Are you talking about all icing conditions or contaminated runway? That’s certainly not what either Airbus or Boeing recommend in their FCOMs. Engine anti-ice will be on, but TO power wouldn’t usually be recommended due to increased engine wear and higher likelihood of an engine failure.

    • @RomeoJulietCharlie
      @RomeoJulietCharlie 2 місяці тому

      @@CerberusTenshi it depends on the aircraft. On an A320 you’d select the appropriate performance code and it would generally stipulate a full power takeoff for contamination. Snow means heavier airplane, but that means only slightly higher power setting. Take offs are not done in TOGA power, because that would eliminate any safety margin if anything went wrong during take off. Most take offs are done in flex, which means, that the pilots feed the FADEC with the location amnd conditions and it decides on its own, what power level is actually required. In most cases, take off is safely below maximum power, because that's also less damaging for the engines AMD even them, it's limited to 5 minutes before it has to be reduced to climb.
      So, in short, TOGA is for emergencies, not for normal take offs.

      You’d use TOGA thrust following de-icing in order to provide a performance margin. You’ve de-icing and so have added fluid to the airframe plus the risk of a contaminated runway.

    The Air Canada A330 does not use full take-off thrust. The initial higher thrust setting with the airplane stationary is the ice-shedding procedure. Any ice accumulated on the engine fan blades is removed by setting an initial higher N1, so that there is no compressor stall due to any ice when take-off thrust is set. The airflow through the engine is less sensitive at ice-shedding N1.

      I was going to comment that the IranAir A330 "buttered" the landing even with the gear doors down....I think it was smart of Airbus to build the butter landing feature into the A330.

    notice that a lot of these crosswind videos take place in the UK. Did they not build any of their runways with the prominent wind direction in mind?

      Schiphol has six runways: three in north-south direction, two from north-west to south-east direction, and one going from east to west.
      They still get a load of crosswind landings though.

      Here's a thought. The four main London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted) have a combined total of around 2,000 take-off/landings every day.
      3MOA posts around three times a week. Let's say every compilation has a bad crosswind landing at a London airport in it. 14,000 landings a week gives 3MOA three crosswind videos to post.
      *My point?* It's typically windy in the UK. Tens of thousands of landings aren't badly affected by crosswinds - so the vast majority of landings are into the prevailing wind. Sometimes the wind direction changes - sometimes crosswinds are problematic. Conclusion - the airport designers took the prevailing wind direction into account.

      Well a lot of the time we _did_ but as planes got bigger and as longer runways were needed there wasn't always room to lengthen them in the optimal direction.

    If the A330 hydraulic systems work like the A300, then the green hydraulic system that powers the landing gear system failed. When performing a manual gear extension procedure, the main gear doors stay in the open position, because the green system that would close them has failed. Notice during the landing rollout the doors actually rise up a little toward the closed position, due to the reverse thrust airflow.
