This amazing drummer was Nick Menza who passed away on May 21, 2016 of a Heart Attack while playing at a jazz club in LA. He is one of my all time favorite drummers. This is my favorite line-up of Megadeth. I saw this line-up of Dave Mustaine (G/V), Marty Friedman (G), David Ellefson (B) and Nick Menza (D) twice in concert. Cool side note, in 1994 I worked with Nick Menza's sister-in-law and I was able to get my Rust in Peace cd inlet signed by Nick.

Dave Mustaine (vocals/ guitar) was truly an incredible talent, single-handedly guiding Megadeth to platinum success... This was Megadeth's iconic 4th album 'Rust in Peace' in 1990... the band line-up was: Mustaine, David Ellefson (bass), Marty Friedman (guitar) and (the late) Nick Menza (drums)... which was the most famous Megadeth line-up from 1990 to 1998.
As most metal fans know... Dave Mustaine was a co-founder and lead guitarist of Metallica back in 1982 after James Hetfield (vocals/ guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums) started as a project in 1981... They became a band in 1982 w/ Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney... playing gigs in L.A. ... Cliff Burton (bass) joined in early 1983 after Metallica migrated to San Francisco... James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine wrote most of the songs for what would be Metallica's debut album "Kill 'em all" in 1983.
Unfortunately, Dave Mustaine was also a drug addict and violent alcoholic in his 20's at the time... even James Hetfield was intimidated by him. Metallica would take a trip to NYC to sign w/ managers Johnny and Marsha Zazula and record their debut album in '83 for their Megaforce Record label ... but Mustaine's violent behavior was escalating... so, the decision to fire him was made before reaching New York.
The day Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) was due to arrive in NYC to audition for Metallica... Dave Mustaine was fired and given a bus ticket back to L.A. ... He vowed revenge on Metallica and formed Megadeth that year and began playing gigs in 1984.
Megadeth was a brilliant band musically... much more proficient than Metallica w/ 2 lead guitarists and a choice of 1st-rate musicians to pick from... Dave Mustaine's voice was an intense mix of shock rocker Alice Cooper and punk rock singer Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols.
However, in the early days, they were a toxic mix of drugs, alcohol and violent infighting... After 2 albums, drummer Gar Samuelson and guitarist Chris Poland were fired in 1987... their replacements who recorded Megadeth's 3rd album were fired by 1989.
'Rust in Peace' was an album made w/ some measure of sobriety... both Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson had been in rehab and made some of the best music on that record, which became Megadeth's first platinum album (1 million copies sold) in the US. Many Megadeth fans pick 'Rust in Peace' as their best record... the same way Metallica fans picked 'Master of Puppets' as their fave Metallica album.
However, both Mustaine and Ellefson revealed years later that they were broke from abusing drugs in the 80's and had to start from scratch all over again, despite selling millions of records.
And like Metallica... Megadeth experimented w/ non-metal influences in the 90's and it didn't work for Megadeth the way it did for Metallica, especially after the massive success of their 1991 self-titled 'black' album... Megadeth scored a 2x platinum album 'Countdown to Extinction' in 1992 but they could never match the success of Metallica.
Still, Megadeth did extremely well for themselves...

Youthanasia is another favorite album for me...Train of Consequences and À Tout le Monde are the best songs on that album

The drummer Nick Menza passed away, his father Don Menza was a saxophonist, who played with the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, and he also played with Buddy Rich and was part of the Tonight Show Band in the 70s.
Guitarist Marty Friedman (Curly hair) played with a band called Cacophony, with fellow guitar shredder, Jason Becker. Jason played with David Lee Roth’s solo band and played on his album, A little ain’t enough, Jason later found out he had ALS, he is still alive and composes music. Marty Friedman has put out many solo albums and now lives in Japan.

The first part of this song "holy wars" was inspired by the reaction that Dave got when he said something to the line of, "this is for 'the cause'", in Ireland in the 80s, unaware of the catholic and protestant divide...this caused him to reflect on how ppl kill each other over religion...the second part of the song "the punishment due" is about the Marvel Comic book character, the Punisher.

I bought this when I was in the Marines at Camp Pendleton when it came out in 1990. Couple months later I was shipped over to Desert Storm (Desert Shield at the time) and other metalheads I knew were asking about this because it came out after they were already shipped off. This became a popular cassette tape being borrowed...this one, Slayer "Seasons in the Abyss", and Judas Priest 'Painkiller". Those were all releases that came out after most of my unit was over there.

So he went and made a band even faster and heavier than Metallica. Check out Hook in Mouth for some more deep lyrics. It's a song about freedom in the wake of those who would suppress the music we love.
