War Thunder's Fox 3 testing is here and missiles are amazing!! except for the AMRAAM which to be honest sucks! but i talk about the R77, Aim120, R-Darter and PL-8, I left out the mica missile since it doesnt thrust vector for now.

Something to note: this test event is most definitely not meant to be balanced and also as you’ve said, subject to change. Everyone is talking about different fox-3s like they are so bad or what ever as if they are going to be added this update in its current state and people should really just relax about it.

@@Silent_WTNot to mention, Jaek did an experiment and the R-77 and the AMRAAM currently perform pretty similarly, though at further ranges the amraam tended to be towards the front
I wouldn’t say the AMRAAM sucks. It just doesn’t, it’ll pull probably 10 more Gs than the Sparrow, a SIGNIFICANTLY better seekerhead, it’s active obviously, it accelerates much faster too. In BVR, it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out against the ER, but closer range, it’ll be better, because you don’t have to maintain a lock. And it’s, again, all up to change, and most the Fox 3s stats are placeholder rn anyways. The moral of the story, we need 8v8
Thumbs up here, I very much agree the AMRAAM is much much better than the current in-game sparrow and better than the R-27ER in most practical uses despite what @silent is saying. First of all, it tracks, very very well, it does not get notched or chaffed easily and it will run you down if you try to run away cold from 3 miles. Second off, it lofts, like a lot, so much so that it can get to a target 20 miles away at mach 1, which you can see with the new tacview. But most importantly is the tracking seems to hold from far distances, say 10-12 miles in game, this means in most practical situations you can shoot and pretty comfortably run away without worrying if your missile needs more track assistance.

@@alexandreabecasis6659 the AMRAAM has very good range and speed, it’s still very maneuverable, has a good motor, lofts well, has a very good seeker, and there’s really nothing it’s bad at. The R77 is more maneuverable, but has less range than most of the Fox 3s. The MICA is hyper maneuverable, but sacrifices speed, energy retention, and range for its maneuverability. The PL12 has a crazy good first stage motor, so close range, especially rear aspect, it will catch a target super quick, but it’s second stage is worse than the AMRAAM’s I think, so in practice, their range is similar. I believe their maneuverability is similar, and I think the PL12’s seeker is better because it’s newer. The Derby is extremely light, making early acceleration and maneuverability very good, and it lofts at a greater angle than the other Fox 3s, making it super funny to watch. Good seeker and motor, overall good missile, just like the AMRAAM. And I don’t know much about the Darter, but I’ve heard it’s similar to the Derby. Overall, every nation will have a radar missile that is competitive with the others. Some do some things better than others, while sacrificing other stats to focus on one super good stat, while others sacrifice doing something super good for doing everything well
derby andd R darter are identical statswise
I think the Derby lofts more, higher angle and for longer etc. but as far as I’m aware, thats the only difference as of now

kinda, it still looses energy because of the bad coding of thrust vectoring.
PL12 sucks too. People already complaint about this issues but they turn a deaf ears against players.

how have they turned a deaf ear to this, the dev server has been open for like a day, and the missiles are just placeholders rn, most of the missiles perform similarly rn, and like i said, they are just placeholders
2024 gonna be big for War Thunder!
I mean, none of the seekers are anywhere near finished, which is what the crux of the issue is for their effectiveness. All of these should be as hard, if not harder to notch than an R-27ER. All the doppler gates are currently as wide as Aim-54. While they may not have as much kinetic range as ER, the Fox-3 aspect allows you to get a little riskier in BVR with your usage since you can just notch of go cold for safety while your missile keeps going. Gives you first shot at re-commit too if you time it right. That paired with the crazy agility of all these missiles (Holy fin angle...) gives me hope that these missiles will be VERY good once polished. A properly modeled Aim-120A/B, R-77, or anything else here would be nothing short of monstrous in good hands.
I mean most of the missile shots in this video were total ass so no wonder they didnt go well. You didnt use TWS at all, basically negating the no RWR lock ability of fox-3s, you launched at cold targets 7-15 km away and didnt really try to use the ARH, you just used it as a sparrow.

what do you think about the R-27EA? it is the same as a ER but with a ARH seeker head which may be the same as the R-77s seeker but i may be wrong but id argue the AIM-120 will just be a upgrade that is much needed to replace the Sparrow because i hate having my AIM-7 just go on its own little side quest into a cloud and then disappear...
The EA as far as i know is the ARH version of the 27, i dont know if it was used extensively or not or if its just a paper missile, so that is outside my zone of expertise. And yes your points on the aim120 are spot on
It was never in service with anyone so it wont be added (unless they pull what they did with the yak141)

i just read the titel and i had the best experience with the aamram like they where the consitant missles if played (this comment will change maybe after the i watched the vid)
Since we are sharing experiences here, i played it like a fancy aim7M and it lacked the range as you've seen in the video. ofc this will change in the future im sure.
@@Silent_WT if watched the vid btw and think that the aamram can counter the er if played right i made consistand kills on abou 35km ranges at abou 7.5km alt. If played other missles as well like the mica or the r77 but i like the aamram the most. For example i was in the middle of a dogfight and had 2 aamrams to use and a gripen was aproaching 23km away at about 2km alt and i was at about 1.5 so i got the hmd lock shot, broke the lock and continued the dogfight and the aamram connected.

I have read all of your comments and you are correct to a certain extent, however it is easier to play an ER compared to the AMRAAM; with that said though I will still try to do some extensive research about the subject to see which is which, and what works and what doesn't. And with Fox3s i would actually advocate for any team size reduction so you are right!

1:14 idk about long range but the aim120 doesn't suck at close range its way better than clocking at 3600km/h aim7m is 2800km close to 27er 4400km/h in 5km to 8km shot and really that's what you want to be in to beat players the only fox3 to get to 4000km/h is the mica em

nope R-27ER the current missile on the russian planes at top tier and its exactly 5.8 mach while iirc the R77 is mach 4 on dev.

AMRAAMS suck because you people don't know how to use AMRAAMS. You are still flying a low altitudes trying to use a missile designed for high altitude and medium range. Just like how everyone bitches about speeds and ranges of weapons meanwhile you are literally chilling in the densest part of the atmosphere the entire game. Most players don't notch missiles, don't cut out afterburner when a IR is tracking them, and hardly ever go cold. You are trying to play it like an arcade game.

@@Silent_WT Just trying to give you some info. AMRAAM's are not designed for low altitude short range. Do they work? Sure. But that's not what they were designed for. War Thunder maps are going to have to be much larger. I mean 200km or more between each sides spawn points. This gives time to gain altitude, strategize, and use the missiles to their full capabilities. It isn't going to be as fast paced as past gameplay. AMRAAM fights will need to use real air combat tactics which are going to be much slower and no where near as visually exciting as current gameplay because most of the time these battles take place BVR. After Gaijin does some tweaking and some changes, try it out.
@nick4819 in an ideal scenario sure 100% yet in a 16 vs 16 plot it is very difficult since im going to be at high alt and other players will pick me up easily and shoot everything at me; I am saying this because I have tried it and you can too! so all im going to be doing is notching and cranking all game and that not interesting at all imo. Now another thing to note about these missiles currently, they always over correct and do minor adjustments therefor they loose a ton of energy to effectively BVR. You see the issue now?

1st gen amraam was pretty mediocre and got better from there.

It was very much not mediocre, for its time in the early 90’s when the Russians were just releasing the ER which was by no means a standard missile it was dominate. A period line up of 95’ would have seen AMRAAMs against 27R’s
