Wow for the amount of time those tracks have been abandoned they are in really good condition. Also great to hear that the line gonna be put back into working order
Your videos are great. Detailed and you explain when and where everything is happening. Thanks for your efforts. I wish I knew someone like you near where I live.
These tracks that have been out of regular service for many years look a hell of a lot better than some of the tracks that are still used a couple a times a week here in Michigan!
They have welded rail, thick ballast and a lot of passing sidings. Your right, this line is in pretty good shape except for the eastern end and a few bad spots near Peebles
Michigan Rail Productions I hate to see rail lines not maintained. You should video some of the lines that are in danger. Us railfans have to document history as you know. I noticed that videos showing rail lines that are in danger always get lots of views. I've been to a lot of places in Michigan railfanning but that was before I was making videos. I only have pictures of them like in Owasso, Grand Rapids, Durand and Sturgis. There are a couple lines near Cincy that are going to be removed soon and I want to video them. Have a nice weekend!
Sad to see rail lines get abandoned, i live near an almost 140 year old rail line that is at risk of being abandoned. It is in brantford, ontario canada and it seems to be the only remaining example of street running in canada. It is a one customer line now and if the industry (ingenia polymers) closes down the line has nothing to fall back on. My profile picture is one that i took of a train on said tracks.
TheBrantfordRailfan yes i think its pretty sad also I want to see trains expand and broaden especially since they are very efficient at transporting cargo since they can transport so much
This NS line did not get permission to abandon the line. Now the new railroad company CCET that is leasing part of this line just got permission to expand service another 16 miles to reach a gravel quarry! They have permission to start using the extension after December 22, 2016. The tracks will need some major work before a train will move on them. With this extension, this railroad line will have 69.45 miles restored to service out of 96 total route miles! I cant wait for the trains to return to this section.
I think I have seen your railroad in Railfan Magazine. The train runs right next to some old brick buildings in the downtown area. Somebody has a video of a train going on the street running section. Maybe its your video, I dont remember now. I am curious to know if your railroad is safe for the near future.
TheBrantfordRailfan I live in London Ontario and there is an abandoned railway in St Thomas called the CASO and they ripped it up in 2009 and abandoned in 2005
7.26 that belt run that goes under the tracks we had one of those for clay deposits for acme brick company and use to have tracks running to their plant to haul bricks all over the state
Nice photography Jawtooth! My family is originally from Portsmouth, Ohio, and my mom and her husband lived at Rt.23 and Blain highway until her death in 2010. I live in Florida now, but I still miss the hills of southern Ohio. I love that section of RR that goes along Rt.23 from around Circleville into Portsmouth. I guess it is Norfolk and Southern?
+olentangy74 Yes, that is a Norfolk Southern line. Several times we have stayed at the motels in Rosemount just north of Portsmouth to watch the trains. I live in southern Ohio but I also go to Florida a lot in the winter since my mom has a home there. We want to buy a home there also to get away from the cold weather. Can you believe we got frost last night? We had to scrape the windows this morning. I miss Florida. I was there in December, February and April this winter. Ohio is nice in the summer. This railroad line ties into the Norfolk Southern line just north of Portsmouth by route 23. The eastern 43 miles or so are out of service but the western 53 miles still get some use.
+Jaw Tooth Yes I have to say I don't miss Ohio winters lol. Although I lived in Delaware county in my teens I had cousins who lived in Piketon near the Nuclear plant. There was a spur line that ran into it and it was one of our hangouts. I have loved trains since I was a kid, but I have spent my career working in aviation. Go figure lol
olentangy74 I know that spur you mentioned! I have walked down it. It is still in use. I applied to the railroad but never heard anything so I worked for a health department until I retired. My brother in law is in aviation and he loves it.
When I was a kid here were trains all over the place. You couldn't imagine a line being out of service like this. Everything worked and was well maintained.
Hi Brian! I am glad I watched this again because now I understand why CCET and lessor NS do not want to have anything to do with the eastern end of the Peavine. There are no industry’s to pick up cars. Very Interesting with you commenting on the location using mile posts. Thank you.

@@JawTooth If you haven't already, you should take a video on the NS line around Dayton. There are some neat shots you could get where a train crosses a trestle and then travels through a cut and under a viaduct close to the Huffman Dam.
+trainroomgary Yes, he was a great guy. I miss seeing him on this line. He got transferred to a job in Middletown Ohio. Everyone I ever met with the name Gary is always a nice person! Thanks for watching Gary!!
Awesome video jaw tooth I hope they reopen this line soon I understand if they are not able to reactivate it I was on my way to North American youth congress in Indianapolis Indiana in July 2017 I rode with my friend brother Michael Simon me and him crossed some abandoned crossings I saw a lot of tank cars that were abandoned in Indiana near Newcastle but I managed to see a CSX train run next to Lucas oil stadium I kind of wish I had the video I'm hoping to go back there again soon I even want to go to St Louis Missouri
Just saw this video, and I'm reminded how lucky to live where I do, which is Adrian, Michigan. Adrian, at one time, was the western terminus for the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains -- the Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad. After doing the research, I estimate that almost all of the "Old Road" trackage is still in place, except for about 5 or 7 miles, from Stearns Road (1 mile north of the Ohio border) to where the Adrian & Blissfield Railroad (ADBF) now interchanges with the Indiana & Ohio Railroad (I & O).
After seeing the footage of Claire yard what better way than to review this old trackage. The rusty but heavy duty rail with the power switches. Then the various signals hauntingly empty passing through small towns and behind Farms. I thoroughly enjoyed the close-ups of the conveyor belts and trestle and that one truly rates as a trestle. Except for the bigger Hills this is how various parts of the Milwaukee Road and New York Central trackage looked that later became the Kankakee Bneaverville and Southern. Thanks for the tour and now we know the rest of the story
I recently read that the reason one of our lines was put on the Out-of-service board is because it would cost $3,000,000 to replace the washout damage from a storm. No railroad company will pay out that much, without the county helping flip the bill. Up here in Wisconsin on one of CN lines.
Don`t think the salvage guys ever hi railed the line. Now that Clermont County has purchased 285 acres at Half Acre and 32 with adjoins the Peavine in Afton, there are companies supposedly coming that want rail service. A friend of mine said that the county commissioners are going to Columbus to stop NS from yanking the track. So we shall see what happens
Hell the commissioners in scioto county all they want to do is line their pockets. Everyone says their is one in their who is pretty much a crook. Still no marks on the rails that I painted. Thinking about making more marks as well.
Preston Whitt Your spelling is better than 90% of the people that post on here. Some people just haven`t got anything better to do with their time than point out trivial crap that means absolutely nothing to rest of us.
Man I counted 142 cars but might have messed up but none the less that was amazing seeing one engine pulling so many cars. They must have been empties.
The big concrete structure you walk by at the end, which is located south of Piketon, is something I've wondered about my entire life. It's looked essentially like that as long as I can remember, going back to the fifties, and no one has ever been able to tell me what it was. Do you know. Enjoyed your Peavine film, too.
I was guessing it was an old grain company but I'm not sure. I will ask some of my friends and if I find out for sure then I will let you know. I bet you saw some great railroading there in the fifties. Thanks for watching my video and commenting!
I just messaged a friend of mine to see if he knows what that building was. Since they removed the trailers it has really opened up the view there. I like that area. My wife and I sometimes stay in motels at Rosemount just so I can watch the trains there at night. We have ridden over the Peavine once in the 80s and once around 1993 from Cincinnati to Portsmouth and back behind the 611 steam train. Greggs Hill is also one of my favorite spots near there. You probably saw steam engines and passenger trains.
Yes, I did, my grandparents lived right on the south edge of Lucasville on Route 23 and I saw all of that. I would have liked to made a trip on the Peavine but never had the opportunity.
wow you was in my area lol. the last part of the pevine you was in henley. i walked those rails alot. wonder what the high rail guys where doing. if they went all the way to portsmouth they would be cutting some more trees up. not to far from where you saw them going to is where i filmed all the downed trees.
This is on the part of the line that CCET has never leased. It has been out of service since about 2003. They were doing an inspection for scrap value but they were not given permission to rip out the line. that's what they told me. Some areas on this part of the line have washouts and also the east end switch has been removed. Last year CCET was talking about leasing another couple miles for car storage but they fell apart when the economy rebounded and most of the railcars were taken out of storage. As a matter of fact there are no railcars past mile post 62 and no train has been past there since last summer. 62 is at Seaman Ohio and they lease the line all the way to about 78.445
Those rails look to be in great shape yet. And hopefully a business or something could create a need for them to be utilized again. Hell of a trestle also. Seeing all of the old style signals is very interesting also. I am not enough of a fan to know what you call that round signal with the six lights on it. Also you have done it again Tooth, a great video. Nice to see the high rail finally come thru. Makes you wonder if maybe doing a check because they may want to bring a special train thru for something?
+Railfan Center I think they closed it bc it was too expensive to maintain the line and it only had a few customers. It looks like the last 44 miles or more may never get used again and could get scrapped .
+superbnsf1 Probably not the last 30 miles or so but last year they reopened about 30 miles to a grain elevator. There is an additional 13 or so miles that they want to reopen to a quarry. I sure hope they do.
The farthest customer is the grain elevator at MP57. CCET leases 69 miles of this line to MP78. Past MP57 it is only used for car storage and to get an occasional load of gravel from the quarry. There are no cars in storage past 57 but they have been running a work train to keep the tracks up so they can use them when they need to. I filmed a work train this week at MP62 that I will post soon. The track from MP78 to the end at about MP104 is out of service and has not been used in years since 2003. The truck you see in this video on the rails is on the portion that is out of service. I have videos of the rare trains just a couple miles from MP78
I rarely encounter railroad police. I have in Portsmouth Ohio but never along the Peavine Line. The railroad police are a lot easier to deal with than the local police. If you run into a local cop who has never heard of railfanning, you are in for a major butt reaming. I can tell you that first hand. Anyway, thanks for watching!
Why did they at the time stop using this line. The track still look in really good shape and scrap price is really low. Is any of this track being used. ?
+Ginger Rail They stopped using it as a through route in about 2005 due to a problem with a bridge near Portsmouth Ohio. There is still a couple customers on the line that Cincinnati East Terminal Ry services. They lease 53 miles of the track and the remaining 43 miles are out of service and could be removed. It is cheaper to haul freight up to Columbus Ohio and down to Cincinnati due to the numerous curves and hills on the line. Parts of the line have been opened and closed in the past few years but there is still local service a few days a week to the 2 customers and there is railroad car storage business also.
+Jaw Tooth Thanks for the information. Hopefully the unused part of the line doesn't get rip up. So many lines r being removed when they could save money by using them. I love the shortlines because without them so many more lines would be removed. P.S keep the videos coming, I love them, and the up dates on the line as well. Thanks.
Mile post 90.7 is in my neighborhood. We haven't seen a train on this part of the Peavine line since around the time of the 2003 ice storm, or some time after it. Not sure what that has to do with anything though. Sure wish they'd run the line at least to the Portsmouth rail yard, or at least use it as a passenger excursion route during the fall season.
2003 was when they stopped running trains between Peebles and Portsmouth. They stopped running to Peebles in 2014. Right now they run as far as Seaman MP 62.4 but they have permission to run past Peebles to Plum Run at MP 78.45. They plan on running to the quarry at Plum Run but they have a lot of track work to finish first. They also have a few potential customers in the works and some plans for something in Mt Orab that they are supposed to announce soon. Maybe they will extend service to your area someday but Norfolk Southern is fighting that idea. CCET leases the line and they have reopened the line in stages from MP32 . Thanks for watching!
Is this the line that crosses Edwards Rd nd Madison Rd goes over I 75 and crosses Montgomery Rd or used to saw the area on Montgomery in Norwood a few years ago WOW1totally shocked how things out there have changed SERIOUSLY remember when i was a kid 100-150 car trains on that line do you remember the US shoe plant near lunken airport where the N&W B&O and Pennsy all crossed
+MrCsxtrain NS doesnt want anything to do with any part of this line. They are getting a price from A&K Salvage Co. on the closed section. It will either be sold or scraped.
+David Howarth Especially when its in your neighborhood. I rode behind the 611 4-8-4 steamer back in the 80s and early 90s on this line on the complete line. I hope the tracks dont get taken up.
Is NS just not sure what to do with the line? It has been out of service for many years but I have yet to hear about the rails being taken up. Google Streetview and aerials show the track is still in place.
Some long railroad tressles used to have short platforms for water barrels. Remember the 'Journal Boxes' or what the engineers would call a Hot Box before modern day ball bearings existed ? Back since the Steam Era lubrication had to be done very frequently. Journals had to be lubed before every 100 miles was reached.
They are supposed to open 16 miles of this line to reach a quarry but the 27 miles at the east end NS wanted to scrape but they did not get approval. CCET will operate the track to the quarry since they lease another portion at the westend of the line. NS says the trestles and steep grades are too expensive to maintain.
No. NS was ordered to not remove the line. Part of it has reopened and is operated by a new railroad company Cincinnati Eastern Railroad. They have 3 customers, car storage and haul some stone from the quarry
They ran across one crossing at Plum Run and they had to clear the dirt off the crossing using a Bobcat before the locomotive could cross. I filmed that one also in one of my videos here
Another 16+ miles of this line has permission to reopen after December 22, 2016 to reach a quarry! The tracks need some major repairs first and customers need obtained for the gravel.
Great video, to bad you didn`t get to pick their brains about what is going on out there. Totaled my truck on the way to work this morning, 4 deer came out of nowhere and I almost rolled it. 5 hours at the hospital, 7 stitches, a Cat Scan and a tetanus shot and lots of pain! So, is there a siding for Plum Run or do they transload there?
+1960gambit They have several long sidings at Plum Run on the quarry property but havent used them in years. Sorry to hear about you wrecking. I hope you start feeling better. Make sure the insurance company gives you a fair settlement on your truck. That really sucks.
Great way to spend a relaxing Saturday night, JawTooth videos... cool watching rusty relics, rails and signals. You said Jan 9, 2014 at the beginning of the video. So how long have you done videos on You Tube? So far I see 8 years. Nice !! 👍
I started this channel on June 12, 2013. I only have a few videos older than that. I use to only take pictures. I am planning on making a video slide show of a train derailment that I photographed a few years before I started filming
Absolutely amazing video I love it. Magnificent upload my dear angel, and thanks for sharing.. Have a fantastic evening Greetings & my best wishes to you. hugs and kisss Yours Terka
The infrastructure to do such a thing would be ridiculously expensive. On average it take two weeks for freight to get across the country by train. When I truck can do it in less then five days.
Most freight though is not in that much of a hurry. Heck, it just spent how long on a slow boat from China already? Most of the trains I see anymore are intermodals now with double stacked shipping containers on them. If it's profitable enough, the basic infrastructure is already there as many places don't build over the old rights of way anyhow. At least not when looking at abandoned lines on satellite. I somehow bet that it would actually cost less to upgrade the infrastructure to it's former multi track beds and branches than building more lanes on interstates which wouldn't be needed anyway if there weren't so many trucks on the roads. Watch one of those double stacked intermodals sometime and just count how many of those trailer/containers 2/4 locomotives can haul.
1964 is fairly new rail. CSX stopped using the local branch and just left it. Rail has never been replaced in whole since the branch was built in 1926. It was planned to be replaced in the early 2000s but when the power company decided not to build two coal fired plants, it never happened. Then along came Hurricane Irma. That was the final nail in the coffin. CSX never bothered to even clear the ROW. They did rebuild the crossing at FL-997 just North of SW 232nd St when the road was 4-laned. And put in brand new rail, ties, and crossing signal. And then never used them. All crossing signals had the lights turned upward and the crossing gate arms removed. No spraying of the ROW either. NS has done at least that on this branch.
it is just very strange that NS would even inspect the line. midland sub may know something. I sent him a post on one of the forum pages. I feel something may be up
Here in Western Australia the freight from the wheat fields is now hauled by Road Trains and the rail lines through the area are now out of use , not sure how people think sometimes…. You didn’t look very happy so chin up and keep well … is you yxl a licensed operator as well ? ..Peter de VK6GIA

Preston Whitt Your spelling is better than 90% of the people that post on here. Some people just haven`t got anything better to do with their time than point out trivial crap that means absolutely nothing to rest of us.
man 132 cars and only one engine pulling! good job Jaw tooth getting that! man, that train must have been doing 80MPH what was that a 70ace?
michael weilert 70mph*
My grandparents lived in Lucasville so yes, I did.
David L. White I would love to have seen what you saw! That is awesome! I was born right when the last steamers were being retired
If one list sad things to see, rails without "shine" and abandoned track / roadbeds have to be high on the list.
Another sad thing is when you see a long straight stretch of flat grass, that's where a railroad once was.
wow you was in my area lol. the last part of the pevine you was in henley. i walked those rails alot. wonder what the high rail guys where doing. if they went all the way to portsmouth they would be cutting some more trees up. not to far from where you saw them going to is where i filmed all the downed trees.
+Paw95 I was looking for trees on the tracks. I wonder if they removed them or what. I never saw the truck show up at Portsmouth.
they must just run sections at a time or something.
+Paw95 Probably but I was hoping to film that truck on the Vera bridge. That would have been cool.
yes it would have
Awesome Video Jaw Tooth!! 😊👍 Thanks!
+Vlog Channel Thank you for watching!!
that was a great low rail shot....certainly time has gone by and the rail industry fading away, compared to its hey day. Thanks JT
Could you give us a link to the Wikipedia article about this line?! Thanks!
Its sad to see this happening to the old N&W!
+Trains Big and Small I know. I have ridden the full line twice on the 611 and I grew up near this line.
@@JawTooth Is this now the CET??
@@thomasabramson100 Obviously!
This must've been before CCET .They were probably doing an FRA- mandated inspection or prep for sale.
62 is at Seaman Ohio and they lease the line all the way to about 78.445
Great upload Brian - thumbs up! :-)
Thomas
+SUPERGENKI JAPAN Thank you Thomas!!
Is this the name Peavine line you view in SW Ohio.? I'm confused.
I enjoyed this video very much thanks
Excellent video. I also did a tour on Google Earth while watching your video.
+iusetano Cool, that Google Earth is fun to do. I always do that when I see something interesting on the news or an interesting article in a magazine.
I have 2 questions: 1,Why did they close the line? and 2, Are they ever going to use the line again?
+Railfan Center I think they closed it bc it was too expensive to maintain the line and it only had a few customers. It looks like the last 44 miles or more may never get used again and could get scrapped .
Funny thing...when that evaluation took place a rumor started that they were looking/thinking about opening the line back up.
@@brettgrahovac7552 We wish.
got a video of a out of severs line near hellen west viginia
I saw your picture from Mason City Iowa with the trolley pick up Loco very interesting
That's a shame to scrap this line. It looks to be in good condition yet. Welded rail, too. NS must think there's no hope for business to return.
Excellent video. I enjoy it very much. Thank you! Sifoutv Pottery
I doubt the Surface Transportation Board will allow any track to be pulled up.
good video my friend
+big dude Thank you!!
Is this opened now and are the CPL signals going to be used?
So will this line ever be used again?
+superbnsf1 Probably not the last 30 miles or so but last year they reopened about 30 miles to a grain elevator. There is an additional 13 or so miles that they want to reopen to a quarry. I sure hope they do.
Really like this video. The history is awesome.. Thanks for this one.
Glad you enjoyed it
is this part of the line back in use
@@JawTooth thank you one day you may get lluckley and see trains on that part of the line again
You filmed all this and not one encounter with Railroad Police, very lucky.
Thanks.
Jawtooth, this is so sad ! Peebles is this where the CCET reach for the sleepers ?
Good Stuff JT ! You seem kind of bummed, hope things work out for you !
@ 8:20 note the lack of spikes in the tie plates?
I see this on bridges all the time, only one spike on each side. Maybe someone smarter than me can explain it?
Is this the line that crosses Edwards Rd nd Madison Rd goes over I 75 and crosses Montgomery Rd or used to saw the area on Montgomery in Norwood a few years ago WOW1totally shocked how things out there have changed SERIOUSLY remember when i was a kid 100-150 car trains on that line do you remember the US shoe plant near lunken airport where the N&W B&O and Pennsy all crossed
Is NS possibly goin to use the closed section??
+MrCsxtrain NS doesnt want anything to do with any part of this line. They are getting a price from A&K Salvage Co. on the closed section. It will either be sold or scraped.
Sad when I line closes
+David Howarth Especially when its in your neighborhood. I rode behind the 611 4-8-4 steamer back in the 80s and early 90s on this line on the complete line. I hope the tracks dont get taken up.
Why isn't the line used? And you should railfan maine sometime!
+Maine Railfan© They claimed that they closed it because of a trestle over the Scioto River that needed repairs. I think the reason they kept it closed was because of the numerous sharp curves and steep grades. I use to watch NS have to double and triple a couple of hills when they had long trains. It was an expensive line to use. They still use about half of it.
Jaw Tooth Thanks!
Jaw Tooth Have you ever tried railfanning in south Texas? We even have a nice RR Museum that runs trains here, which I volunteer at.
Is NS just not sure what to do with the line? It has been out of service for many years but I have yet to hear about the rails being taken up. Google Streetview and aerials show the track is still in place.
Why was that whole train sitting there? The oil one
great video thumbs up
+Nalia Rose Thank you Nalia!
So this line has welded rail, but hasn't been used. I wonder why? It's in like tip top shape
They are supposed to open 16 miles of this line to reach a quarry but the 27 miles at the east end NS wanted to scrape but they did not get approval. CCET will operate the track to the quarry since they lease another portion at the westend of the line. NS says the trestles and steep grades are too expensive to maintain.
but at least a good 16 miles are being used
AWESOME blast from the past
Indeed! I was just out near that area today looking around. It is well overgrown with weeds and is becoming a forest
super, thumbs up! love hanna and mia
+Hanna Domjan Thank you!!
Is the line completely gone now
No. NS was ordered to not remove the line. Part of it has reopened and is operated by a new railroad company Cincinnati Eastern Railroad. They have 3 customers, car storage and haul some stone from the quarry
@@JawTooth that's great to hear hope they will bring passenger service to this line someday would be nice to see
Did they haul coal or something else heavy on this line? It would explain the rails worn flat
Very interesting!
If they are going to reopen that line one thing I saw was they better clean the flange ways at grade crossings
They ran across one crossing at Plum Run and they had to clear the dirt off the crossing using a Bobcat before the locomotive could cross. I filmed that one also in one of my videos here
I love trains!
+Trains Me too and thanks for watching!
I am a Train and watch every video for Trains-))
Trains
Cool, I got a bunch of train videos for you to watch! Lol
Let upload it-))) And welcome to my cartoon channel-)))
Bring this line back to service!
So those tankers been sitting there for 12 years?
Absolutely amazing video
I love it.
Magnificent upload my dear angel, and thanks for sharing..
Have a fantastic evening
Greetings & my best wishes to you. hugs and kisss

+Terezia Gavalierova Thank you very much Terezia!!
I watched the peavine dvds and seeing the line now vs then it’s kinda surreal. Most of the eastern end is now a jungle.
Hey jaw tooth did this line get reopen
After all that quiet, that train was a surprise.
They should pass laws that make any industry near a rail line use rail transport when ever possible to get the heavy trucks off our roads.
mike brabant *The autism is real*
That's why they have trailer trains. Carry the trailers or containers to distribution areas and have local drivers pick them up there.
And the truck will use 200x more fuel (per ton) doing that, and only carrying 30-45 tons per trip.
What's the update for this line. What's going to happen to it.
I don't know what's going to happen to this end
Did the mill close or what was the deal ?
it is just very strange that NS would even inspect the line. midland sub may know something. I sent him a post on one of the forum pages. I feel something may be up
+Les Hemingway It might just be a required annual inspection or something but I hope there is something good going on.
