We had a sub division near me that built right next to a busy railroad. The locals wanted a no horn zone. The railroad calculated the cost, and advised the folks it would be done, as soon as the folks coughed up the money. For some reason, they are no longer complaining.

1981 Rail Casualties: 9,461 Collisions 728 Deaths 3,293 Injuries 2018* Same Topics 2,214 270 819 You can see that although the numbers overall are down since 1981, the fatalities are still high, even higher by percentage in 2019 (around 40% vie 25%). Official estimate that around 3-5% of collisions are suicide based. Trains today travel much faster than 1981 and I believe there are more trains around now hauling freight, etc. Railroads have implemented no-horn zones all over the country. Many are established by some local laws passed to restrict noise. A lot of freight trains run late at night but, in normal operations, still are required to sound their horns. Flagstaff, Arizona, for example has been fighting a long battle with BNSF and others over noise, claiming it keeps people up at night and causes health problems. You can do the math here with the numbers. They have gone down over 50% but still remain high. I haven't seen any numbers from no-horn areas, but you can bet someone is keeping track them somewhere.
Ok, they eliminate the horn sounding from the trains, but maintain the crossing and crossing gate? For noise abatement reasons I'm sure. It's up to the crosser to look both ways.
Needed more info? Apparently CSX far side track NS near side. Which maintains the crossing and ctc? How long do they run parallel to each other? Original railroads in town were? Where do the tracks run to? Do they ever crossover? That’s a lot of trains for that little town.

Being from Lake Ronkonkoma NY with one of the busiest Commuter rails in the nation The LIRR. Rail Roading gets in your blood. Didn't hurt that my uncle was an Engineer, 1930s to Late 60s
Awesome! I will look that up on Google Maps. I'm supposed to go to Pennsylvania in a few weeks and I might make it to New Jersey and possible New York.
In some cases, a no train horn zone can be beneficial, and crossings can be guarded more heavily to make up for the silent horn. In this case, the nearby residents were being woken up by the train horns several times per night. It was also a big nuisance to the surrounding residents and businesses during the day. For the record, a train horn is about 125db, which is loud enough to cause hearing damage after just 2 minutes. Imagine how annoying it would be to deal with that constantly interrupting your sleep and daily activities at home. That would be extremely unpleasant. As for guarding a no train horn zone, Seattle, Washington is a stellar example. They have a no train horn zone where the railroad passes by the waterfront on Elliot Bay. However, there haven't been any major incidents there in years because there is fencing around the tracks, all the crossings are gated, there are pedestrian gates at every crossing, and the traffic lights are synched with the crossings, which have bright electronic signs that say "TRAIN" with a no-right-turn symbol that turns on when a train is coming.
cellogirl11RW I don’t care about what they think, it’s their fault they moved 1000ft from the tracks, like peoples fucking minds don’t work these days...
I live about 1 block from a crossing, you don't even notice the horns after about a month, even at night. The only time I have been awakened by a train was a derailment that shook the house. So people being woke up is a farce. The train honks it is by in a few minutes.
What gets me is, people move next to railroad tracks and surprise here comes a train SMH. So don't move next to railroad tracks if it's going to bother you.
What if the crossings fail that is when no horn zones become dangerous. I have seen crossing fail due to power outages. Sometimes csx will have crews stop traffic if it is reported or caught in time.
They told me that they are starting on it next week but it will take a long time to complete. It was almost 2 years ago when they voted to created the quiet zone. Every step requires inspections and reinspections . Who knows if it will even get completed this summer. Probably will though.
I don't agree with "No Train Horn" Zones. I say train horns make people aware a train is coming and to cancel a chance of someone being hit. All No Train Horn Zones need to be removed around the US and made a horn zone again no matter where they are at. If people around there don't like it then they should of never moved there and they should move somewhere else No Matter What.
I totally agree with you. It is dangerous and stupid. But we live in the age of total idiots and brain dead politicians that don't have a clue about what's safe and what isn't, or so it sure seems. And I can never understand someone that buys or rents a home DIRECTLY NEXT to RailRoad Tracks and then has the audacity to complain about the trains horns and other sounds. It's like, hey STUPID, didn't you see the railroad tracks BEFORE you bought or rented that house or apartment. Some people are just totally brain-dead if they claim I didn't know the noise would be so bad or loud. Come on, you can't tell me these yokels have never been stopped by a train ever and never heard the horns, rumbles of the cars and bells? Really? No way would I believe them if they tried to tell me that load of manure!
@@HolidayDecorator You're dang straight! These idiotic imbiciles know dang well what they're doing! @@ThisHandleIsNotTaken. This line was opened in 1851 as the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad. Glendale, Ohio was incorporated 4 years later, in 1855. Most of the homes in this town were built between 1854 and 1930.
Note the mud hole around the pedestrian crossing - it is interfering with the drainage, and the track is pumping - moving up and down. This needs fixing. Am I qualified? Yes, I was Safety Officer for a Heritage Railroad in Australia, and I had to give it up when the stress became too great!

Too bad they did that. I love to hear the horns. Wonder if they will regret the no horn decision. Thanks for all that you do to bring us these great videos.
The greatest danger at that first crossing and many others is the length of time the gates and bell are activated BEFORE arrival of the engine to the crossing; about 54 seconds! This encourages soccer moms to drive across the gate openings so little Johnny or Joan are not late for practice. Thirty seconds would be reasonable and the train speed limit (slow and fast) needs to be consistent.
For the first train in the video, the crossing was actually activated for 63 seconds before the arrival of the train. The legal minimum is 20 seconds, but 30-40 seconds is typical. The equipment at the crossing can tell how fast a train is coming and provide generally-constant warning time. But if a train slows down after the crossing activates, then there's going to be a longer warning. No need to get bent out of shape about it. I hope you never visit Europe where 3-6 minute warning time is typical, and you could even be sitting for over 10 minutes waiting for something to happen...
A couple years ago I was here and a girl drove by me and hit a cable that supports a telephone pole. She was driving on heroin and stopped breathing. I filmed the police doing CPR on her and the news put my video on television two nights in a row. I knew she lived but I dont know what ever became of her.
Bet the trains go slower when there isn't a no horn zone. Rather stupid if you ask me not blowing a horn. All it takes is one accident. Seen many automobiles blow around the gates in that location and the police station is right there
The fences are what bother me because they will ruin filming the trains. The best spot to film will be the balcony at Cock N Bull. My favorite table was in Railfan Magazine a few years ago
When I lived in Melbourne, FL in the early 1980's, FEC enacted a NO HORN, NO BELLS at all Grade Crossings, the tally of people getting severely injured and usually killed rose in severity, that rise was almost close to an 80% increase in accidents at the grade crossings that had the crossing bells on the signal silenced as well as the loco horns and bells silenced. {I lived a few homes down from one of the grade crossings, so I saw what happens when this lunacy is enacted!} Albeit this was only from 10pm-7am daily, but it didn't work. And with todays idiots driving and yakking away or worse, texting on cell phones, this is probably going to increase fatalities at railroad grade crossing to 95% or even higher. And also cars are getting to be more and more soundproof from outside noises, which I also think is extremely stupid, this too is going to lead to more train vs vehicle accidents. But I guess this is just another way of cleaning out the gene pool when idiots don't bother to stop and look first to see if a train is coming. I foresee a ton of Darwin Award's in the making due to these idiotic and unsafe NO TRAIN HORN/BELLS and silencing the bells on crossing signals.
Seriously? Of all the noises that need to be eliminated, the sound of a train horn is pretty far down on my list. If anything needs to shut the hell up, it's those sound systems in cars that idiots are always blasting as they drive by, particularly when they pull up beside you at a red light.

You can see that although the numbers overall are down since 1981, the fatalities are still high, even higher by percentage in 2019 (around 40% vie 25%).
Fences are a great addition to any small town.
Needed more info?
Apparently CSX far side track NS near side. Which maintains the crossing and ctc? How long do they run parallel to each other? Original railroads in town were? Where do the tracks run to?
Do they ever crossover?
That’s a lot of trains for that little town.
Great vid JT FEC in FT. Lauderdale just went no horn it took months, signs new paper and radio telling soon no horns .
keep up the awesome vids. JT the railfan video man c u soon.
mow tinker toys. 1st time i have seen water on a sweeper.. What model steam
engine was that csx loco. lol
Great video! It's a shame the town opted for quiet instead of safety.
I wonder if the city is aware they have to reimburse the railroad for all costs involved.
Yes, the city has to pay $265,000 toward the project and CSX pays the rest.
@@JawTooth The city should pay for all of the costs. They are the ones who enacted the ordinance.
@@JawTooth They are getting by cheap. Quad crossings cost $300-$500,000.
@@JawTooth What cost? All the engineer has to do is not blow the horn. We're one of the very few countries in the world which still have trains blasting horns at every intersection. It's well past time to end this darn nuisance.
Sissy troll alert.....
@JawTooth i saw NS 7332 in Altoona back in the end of April 2019
I'm guessing CSX and NS share that line. Great video Mr Tooth. Lol.
Heh Brian I think it's terrible to have a no horn zone because of safety reasons. I live by a CSX track and love it. Let me know when you come back to Paris and I'll by you lunch at the new train station restaurant.
Awesome! I checked on the progress there a couple months ago. I can't wait to eat there and wait for a train!
Hey Jaw tooth great video are they turning that crossing into a road or is this temporary maintainance
How is that allowed! Trains have to blow their horns! Such a beautiful sound 🎶 Right 🌹
Fantastic video! But You shot only freight trains.Passenger trains do not use this line?Best regards!
What town in Ohio is this JT? This would be a great location to catch some videos. Thanks for sharing this video with us and great catch as always!
Yes it is. It is Glendale, Ohio
Excellente vidéo @ Jaw 😎👍LIKE.((👍 35 ))happy Week
So why exactly do they have to remove pedestrian cross walks and grade crossings for no horn zones when Ashland Va has no horns thru the entire town and they have crossings every block and two or three pedestrian crossings in between? as seen live on Virtual Railfan channel.
This one town near me is in Minnesota across the river that town has no train horn been like that for years
A railroad crossing with no train horn is stupid. I would just make the bell louder.
Some moron is going to get killed !
What if the crossings fail that is when no horn zones become dangerous. I have seen crossing fail due to power outages. Sometimes csx will have crews stop traffic if it is reported or caught in time.
9:00; There's a cop car at the other end of the parking lot. Do know of any specific reason why?
It was gonna happen eventually, but when is it gonna be fully installed though?
They told me that they are starting on it next week but it will take a long time to complete. It was almost 2 years ago when they voted to created the quiet zone. Every step requires inspections and reinspections . Who knows if it will even get completed this summer. Probably will though.
@@JawTooth Oh boy
What kind of scanner antenna do you have and how well does it work?
did you catch the "TORC" locomotive wearing CSX colors while you were there?
I don't think so. I don't know what that stands for. lol
I'm your 1000th viewer!!
Awesome and thanks!
Brian Edlund I also don’t agree with the No horn zones.
Many of the retirees in Glendale have some kind of connection to the railroad, so I know it wasn't them that cried foul over such foolishness.
It's the rich folks that want everything to be catered to them and around their own selfish needs and interests. People like that are a danger to safety and are a cancer to society. These green smoothie, hemp t-shirt wearing clowns are out of control!
The ES44 on the second train does not have a K5HL! And nice video! Keep it up!
Happy Sunday! ✔
That sucks Brian, I am coming into town on the 14th and 15th.
What other things have to be done to change to a no horn zone other than put up signs?
What do they plan to replace the pedestrian crossing with?
You will have to use the sidewalk at the road crossing.
That seems... silly. I suppose we'll have to see what this 'fencing' they put in looks like (as well as how effective it'll be. I've seen more that a few drunk sailors & marines with surprising Mario skills LoL...)
A fence.
I still day no to No Horn Zones. They are dangerous and somebody will get killed. If people don't like the horn they shouldn't be living so close to the tracks. The railroad was here first
Unless the house was there first...
@@ThisHandleIsNotTaken. This line was opened in 1851 as the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad. Glendale, Ohio was incorporated 4 years later, in 1855. Most of the homes in this town were built between 1854 and 1930.
@@hakeemsd70m unless the house was there first.
@@ThisHandleIsNotTaken. Yeah obviously, but I don't think there are too many right next to the tracks from 1851...
@@hakeemsd70m true, but what if the house was there first?
What would be effective and cheap would be to take the crossing signals from Albion ave and put them on the main crossing. Quiet zones suck.
That wouldn't save as much money as you think it would.
Note the mud hole around the pedestrian crossing - it is interfering with the drainage, and the track is pumping - moving up and down. This needs fixing. Am I qualified? Yes, I was Safety Officer for a Heritage Railroad in Australia, and I had to give it up when the stress became too great!
Awesome and thanks for watching!
Can't figure out how there can be a no horn zone when there needs to be horns to prevent accidents bcuz a lot of people don't pay attention to the lights and even crossing gates.
wow Brian come visit St Louis Mo we the NO BLOW YOUR HORN its wild so they upgraded all the gates and crossing to accomaded this and only blow if a person on the track
Now that's what we in the rest of the World call sense.
*@Cyberdon Blue*
“Much of the rest of the world uses 240 volt circuits in homes and businesses. Those are dangerous! 120 volts the US uses is safer. When is the rest of the world going to catch on??” - _that's how stupid you sound._ Just so you know.
Great video jaw tooth 👍🏻🇬🇧
Too bad they did that. I love to hear the horns. Wonder if they will regret the no horn decision. Thanks for all that you do to bring us these great videos.
I agree with you
Those look like pretty busy crossings. How are the townsfolk going to get around town?
I hope you never visit Europe where 3-6 minute warning time is typical, and you could even be sitting for over 10 minutes waiting for something to happen...
no horn zones that is the worst thing to do. to me we need horn zones without that more people and cars will get hurt or worse killed.
Cool video.
How many supervisors does it take?
Will the crossing gate warning bell be eliminated also? I'm in favor of no music train videos.
If you don't like music in my train videos you should go watch someone else's.
@@JawTooth Thanks. I wasn't trying to be a wise ass, I thought you might be interested in feedback. I'll take your excellent suggestion.
How many railroad workers does it take to put up no whistle signs? Sorry if they were DOT workers.
How many CSX workers does it take to stand around and change, no put in a light bulb and a couple hockey stick?
A whole bunch. The biggest job on the railroad is just standing around. lolz
Narcan?. I carry an epi pen. That will wake you up big time. Even from the dead :-)
A couple years ago I was here and a girl drove by me and hit a cable that supports a telephone pole. She was driving on heroin and stopped breathing. I filmed the police doing CPR on her and the news put my video on television two nights in a row. I knew she lived but I dont know what ever became of her.
@@JawTooth I thought I recognized this crossing as that video! was going to ask. now I know.
With hundreds of communities enacting no train horn laws how much longer will it be before states enact such laws?
That would require some significant changes to Federal law first.
Ok, But why is all this happening. Did someone die? Is it all about noise?
Bet the trains go slower when there isn't a no horn zone. Rather stupid if you ask me not blowing a horn. All it takes is one accident. Seen many automobiles blow around the gates in that location and the police station is right there
About a week ago a small car actually drove over the pedestrian crossing thinking it was a road! Martin told me about that.
Great catches! To be honest installing a fence at the tracks is unnecessary. I'm against no train horn rules when it comes to rail crossings.
The fences are what bother me because they will ruin filming the trains. The best spot to film will be the balcony at Cock N Bull. My favorite table was in Railfan Magazine a few years ago
Isn’t that where you made that CSX emergency video with a BNSF leader?
Yes, Lol
4th! just got this on my notifications. nice place to railfan!
Sad to see...... Gonna be fun seeing Jawtooth on top of ladder to get a clear shot of trains
Some locals whined about the horn and guess what, they'll scream the first time some gets hit because of a no horn crossing.
Yep, that's what will happen.
When I lived in Melbourne, FL in the early 1980's, FEC enacted a NO HORN, NO BELLS at all Grade Crossings, the tally of people getting severely injured and usually killed rose in severity, that rise was almost close to an 80% increase in accidents at the grade crossings that had the crossing bells on the signal silenced as well as the loco horns and bells silenced. {I lived a few homes down from one of the grade crossings, so I saw what happens when this lunacy is enacted!}
Albeit this was only from 10pm-7am daily, but it didn't work.
People are crazy! The chance of death at those crossings will increase now!
Not if people aren't stupid.
Seriously? Of all the noises that need to be eliminated, the sound of a train horn is pretty far down on my list. If anything needs to shut the hell up, it's those sound systems in cars that idiots are always blasting as they drive by, particularly when they pull up beside you at a red light.
